ഹിന്ദുമതം, ഒരു വ്യക്തി സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ അഭിപ്രായം എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ മതമല്ല. എന്നാൽ Re-ligion (വീണ്ടും യോജിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് )എന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ മതമാണ്. കാരണം ഓരോ ജീവാത്മാവിനെയും വീണ്ടും പരമാത്മാവായ ബ്രഹ്മത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഹിന്ദുമതത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം. അതിനുള്ള മാർഗങ്ങളാണ് ഭക്തിയോഗം, കർമയോഗം, രാജയോഗം, ജ്ഞാനയോഗം തുടങ്ങിയവ. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഹിന്ദുമതം ഒരേ സമയം മതവും, ധർമ്മവും, സംസ്കാരവും ആണ്. ഭക്തിയോഗത്തിൽ ആരാധന സൗകര്യത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ഏകനായ ഈശ്വരനെ നാമവും രൂപവും സങ്കല്പിച്ചു ദേവതാരൂപത്തിൽ (ബ്രഹ്മാവ്‌, വിഷ്ണു, ശിവൻ തുടങ്ങിയവ ) ആരാധിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
