Who else thinks that red pandas are more adorable than giant pandas?

They certainly have an interesting history!

I think the fact that they have access to so much more nutrient dense food and don't have to forage for it, is why we see all those extremely adorable playful moments of them in captivity.
It also means they have to be kept busy to not feel horrible because they get bored though.

I still find it unusual that nature would select for a lineage of respectable carnivores to basically become living teddy bears.

Thanks - it was really interesting, especially about the red pandas ancestors!

Good video! I didn't even know there was a carnivorous member of this family it does sound pretty badass though.

It would be a shame if we were to lose these cute little fur balls to extinction

Love the video. Always wanted to know more about the prehistory of Red Pandas.
Ever think of making a video on the Binturong or of Andrewsarchus?

Andrewsarchus is a very interesting and quite mysterious animal, so it would make a great subject!

I just love the fact that there was essentially a large, fully carnivorous, red panda roaming around Earth at one point

I've been hearing about the classification confusion of these things for some time. Thanks for clearing it up. A little surprised that they can even subsist on bamboo given their small size.

Are the Himalayan and the Chinese Red Pandas not now seen as 2 diffrent species (Ailurus fulgens and Ailurus styani), not just sub-species ?

I was a little late this time but i enjoyed this segment regardless. I like hearing about living animals extinct relatives. Always quality stuff from Dr. P! Have you thought about a segment that focuses on the anteosauridae? They were the apex predators of their time!

It would make sense that their ancestors would fill the role of the raccoon if you think about it. However with the high density and range of River cane that was in the US it’s not much of a stretch to say it was a major part of their diet then.

Can you do a video on the Pronghorn and it’s extinct relatives and I am asking because you see the pronghorns closest living relatives are the Giraffe and okapi and like even though some people call the pronghorn an antelope the pronghorn isn’t related to antelopes at all and the pronghorn really interests me because the pronghorns field of view is much wider than you see even with a naked eye and on a clear night it is said that with their amazing field of view the pronghorn can see the rings of Saturn 🪐

ya should be careful where you make those claims about stuff like Simocyon...
...fundamentalist leopards make it very clear it was them who invented putting dead prey in trees, and so nobody else could have done it first.
Though, I suppose, being leopards, they'll want to eat you no matter what you do.
    /satire!
