Is it possible to mute the Greek and only hear the English? Reading captions, plus hearing two voices in two languages is sensory overload.
I’m learning a lot from this series, but would prefer to listen to this video in English. The captions would be helpful for the hearing impaired.
Thank you for this consideration if it is possible.

This interview in it is three parts is great. This talk heals the heart. Could you please invite the speaker again for more interviews? Thank you. If he can elaborate more about the subject of communion because many orthodox attend the liturgy and don't take communion and because we orthodox look, speak, and live like everyone who is not Christian.
If he can speak about the church, its nature, the authority in the church and obedience and the royal priesthood.

This is one of the best expositions of the spiritual life I've heard. There aren't superlatives that can properly describe it. We in the West and English speaking world simply don't have access (at least, not until now) to such treasures. I am deeply grateful.

Beautiful translation and such a wise speaker! I need to become fluent in Greek again, haha. I've spent a lot of time in the States.
I love his comment on our initial loosening of the Ancestral Sin of Adam through baptism. It's something I've definitely needed to hear as of late. We're capable of being luminous saints, but our willingness to give in to bad ideas ruins us. His "exercise" on repentance and falling was refreshing as well.
Thanks again for your work, Father.

We need to pray more in lieu of our being shut out from the holy mysteries. The Jesus prayer! Take the prayer rope into your hands in the morning early, before the day begins, and stand before the holy icons, and cry out to God repeating the Jesus prayer and “most holy Theotokos save us!”

Thank you 🙏🏻. What a teacher! That is the clearest explanation of confession I’ve ever heard. Now I understand the relation of personal confession to the sacrament of confession. And I also did not understand before that venerating the icons is sacramental; and given that, it seems absurd that we should stop doing it.

Donna, The Lord bless and keep and console you! It is indeed sad and tragic.
Can you attend another Orthodox Church in your area which is not carrying out these measures?
We are hard pressed on every side, but we can take some courage from the Apostle's immortal words: "By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; 9As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 10As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things."
Read 2 Corinthians 6 - the entire chapter.

The mysteries are inseparable from the Mystery of the Incarnation which continues in the one Body of Christ and they are the door to this life in Christ. Therefore the existence of the form of the mystery *without the faith* and *without the communion* is not profitable. Baptism, Chrismation, and Communion are *inseparable* and *all three* together unite one to Christ in his Body.
Please write me at team@orthodoxethos.com and we can discuss the particulars.

Does this theme of continual repentance extend also to those who are outside of the Church being that they are not yet baptized but just now seeking a life in Christ? What sort of differences or obstacles are present for ones unbaptized? if there are any at all.

    • @OrthodoxEthos
      @OrthodoxEthos  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Those before baptism absolutely need the "good uneasiness" and are on the path of return (repentance). Repentance is a re-orientation toward God in our NOUS (spirit/spiritual intellect). Can anyone not need this?
Those before baptism are not yet freed from the ancestral sickness and its consequences. The patristic tradition is summed up in the writings of St. Diadochos of Photiki:
"On Grace Before and After Baptism
      by St. Diadochos of Photiki
      76. Some have imagined that both grace and sin - that is, the spirit of truth and the spirit of error - are hidden at the same time in the intellect [nous] of the baptized. As a result, they say, one of these two spirits urges the intellect to good, the other to evil. But from Holy Scripture and through the intellect's [nous'] own insight I have come to understand things differently. Before holy baptism, grace encourages the soul towards good from the outside, while Satan lurks in its depths, trying to block all the intellect's ways of approach to the divine. But from the moment that we are reborn through baptism, the demon is outside, grace is within. Thus, whereas before baptism error ruled the soul, after baptism truth rules it. Nevertheless, even after baptism Satan still acts on the soul, often, indeed, to a greater degree than before. This is not because he is present in the soul together with grace; on the contrary, it is because he uses the body's humors to befog the intellect [nous] with the delight of mindless pleasures. God allows him to do this, so that a man, after passing through a trial of storm and fire, may come in the end to the full enjoyment of divine blessings. For it is written: 'We went through fire and water, and Thou hast brought us out into a place where the soul is refreshed' (Ps. 66.12. LXX).
      77. As we have said, from the instant we are baptized, grace is hidden in the depths of the intellect [nous], concealing its presence even from the perception of the intellect [nous] itself. When someone begins, however, to love God with full resolve, then in a mysterious way, by means of intellectual [the nous'] perception, grace communicates something of its riches to his soul.-Then, if he really wants to hold fast to this discovery, he joyfully starts longing to be rid of all his temporal goods, so as to acquire the field in which he has found the hidden treasure of life (cf. Matt. 13:44). This is because, when someone rids himself of all worldly riches, he discovers the place where the grace of God is hidden. For as the soul advances, divine grace more and more reveals itself to the intellect [nous]. During this process, however, the Lord allows the soul to be pestered increasingly by demons. This is to teach it to discriminate correctly between good and evil, and to make it more humble through the deep shame it feels during its purification because of the way in which it is defiled by demonic thoughts."
Saint Diadochos of Photiki, On Spiritual Knowledge, from the Philokalia Vol. 1

@@OrthodoxEthos Thank you for the response it is appreciated. What a difficult journey it will be yet, I should not be discouraged. I have to believe anything is possible with the Lord at my side. But admittedly I am still ruled by logic, perhaps, even more than most and this is a sad thing. It seems as though it has hardened my heart to virtue and made it very easy to sin. This is very frustrating when I attempt to pray for forgiveness. I feel like a hypocrite and surely undeserving of Christ's mercy or patience. If I am already given over to such lusts and sinful desires, I cannot imagine a time where, after being baptized, the demonic influence that God will allow me to be subject to will only be greater. Moreover I feel like I'm running out of time, my slackness delays me and the times we live in do not bode well either. If forcing myself to face the things of God is my only option now then i will try my best. I pray the Lord will give me the time to at least make it to baptism.

I kindly ask you, if possible, to work the background sound a little bit to a lower point. Your guest's voice is so loud that I barely can hear yours.I skipped many of the sayings because of the voice overlapping.Very difficult to catch the meaning.Thank you

Oh. That is not good. We will definitely lower the next episode. Unfortunately, it did not seem that loud to us and now we cannot change in You Tube.
I hope that the transcript, which is now posted, will assist you!

@@OrthodoxEthos , good suggestion, Father. I didn't occur to me to suggest it to people, who said they couldn't follow & so gave up on this interview. I told them the Greek would be silenced in future podcasts of this nature, but couldn't offer any help with part 1 of the interview with Prof. D. Btw, I too struggled. Very hard to follow, to process, the Greek being loud & unending. Thank u for posting the transcript. Shall look for it.

Sorry to hear this. We didn’t have this problem. I’m surprised that it is such a problem for everyone. Sad. Please tell everyone about the transcript.
Perhaps I can upload the audio alone to our website without the Greek background.

Father bless! Can you elaborate more on how ecumenical or other canons when violated, instantly and automatically apply to us if we break them? I tend to agree with this, but I have also read that these canons require a church authority to apply them. For example, Can I excommunicate myself by my secret actions, or does a bishop have to know and excommunicate me. Just to clarify, I am referring to something like canon 69 of the Holy Apsotles referring to fasting on Wednesday’s and Fridays and during Lent.

As I understand it, it is that the canons apply themselves by default, but the bishop or priest can choose to "override" the "default settings". I haven't studied canon law extensively, so I might be wrong.

Yes, canons do need to be applied *in church life* for them to be applicable in *a wider sense* - for the life of the church, such as defrocking of priests or bishops, but they are applied immediately *in a spiritual sense,* on a personal level insomuch as we lose the grace of God.

Greetings, thanks so much for your work and information. I have a few questions, if anyone can help me:
-We are tought in schools since very little we come from monkeys, actually there are hundreds of scientists working in evolution and biology and they agree on that (ok its true maybe they are wrong or in a few years they realize evolution is wrong and we were created.....ok; but for the moment that is what we are tought in school) people who study apes are amazed on how inteligent they are and how similar to us they behave, you can feel humanity on them and also the killer instinct we all have inside. How do we explain it? If evolution is not true why they behave so human? Check for videos in the internet is amazing.
If logic tells me against JesusChrist , I am tought in school about evolution and I have to trust in an event 2000 years ago...I guess God will understand my situation and forgive me? Orthodox spirituality is really nice as a philosophy and how to behave but pray to saints and characters I can’t see or touch is questionable......and nowadays we live in a really material world. It’s really hard honestly. And we have similar philosophys or spiritual practices that tells us to love others, to control our mind etcetera....why do I have to believe in Christ, Virgin Mary etc while I can’t not touch them or see them or even know who they really were.
I am not trying to be rude, if looks so I am really sorry it’s not my intention. I am just trying to learn and understand. Thanks so much.

Are you an Orthodox Christian? An Orthodox Christian who lives the life of the Church lives experientially the person of Christ and all the saints and the mysteries of the kingdom of God and he knows by experience of what he speaks.
You look for empirical knowledge of Christ? Enter the Church. Do you want to know Christ? Come and meet him IN the Church, of which He is the Head and we are His members. Just as He walked on the face of this earth He walks now in His Body the Church. “Come and See” they said - and we say, today, to all who want to meet Life, Truth, God Incarnate. We meet Him in many ways in the church, gradually increasing the intimacy. Among the first ways to meet Him and to “prove“ His existence, is to meet Him in the lives of his holy ones in our day.
We do not live an event that happened 2000 years ago and has ceased to continue to occur. We live the continuous, timeless event of the incarnation in the Church, who is Christ Himself.
We *know experientially* that man, created in the image of God, IN the Church is transformed into His likeness, as well. This man is so far *beyond* the monkey and the ape as to render the similarities you speak of quite superficial. Indeed, that some materialists marvel at the similarities and see in them “proof” of evolution and our lowly state as a “glorified ape” only proves they have fallen away from the experience of the living God. And, moreover, their blindness only confirms our Faith.

Today God granted to test the Catholic Church clergy. They Failed now God's wrath is coming to fulfill all prophesy about our time. The Holy Pope closed the Church and taken away the Eucharist.
