    Thank you very much! I have two VW bugs with the same problem. Taking off the pump cover before removing pump is brilliant! I can’t believe the dealerships would remove the transmission to do the same job. FYI, Jiffy lube refused to do oil change because of the 12 star bolts on the skid plate. I ended up doing the oil change in my driveway. During the process I replaced all the 12 star bolts with 6 sided bolts.

    Thank you! Just completed this job on my daughter's 2006 Beetle Convertible 2.5. Took most of my Sunday, but it's all done now. The three pump housing bolts in this car were T30 torx for some reason (fortunately I figured it out before I stripped any). Getting the pump back over the transmission selector rod was a PITA. Everything has to be in alignment before the pump drive will seat. Don't get me started on seating the cover gasket; it took about a half hour before I was satisfied. I followed your advice and marked the position of the sensor mount bolts with a sharpie, then promptly washed the marks off with brake cleaner...duh. I took pictures all along the way, so it wasn't catastrophic. All in all, a very educational experience.
    Edit: I ended up not removing the wire harness from that little bracket; I just rotated the bracket out of the way while I had the pump out. It was a lot easier to line it all up after I got the pump back in.

    Loved the breakdown of tool used beforehand and the list of everything afterwards. You gave me confidance to do my own. Had a friend of a friend offer to do it for $250 and the part recommended was $212. But after watching 2 other videos I decided a gasket kit was probably all I truly needed. So I'm ordering one now. Excellent tutorial! Very impressed by the great lighting and video angles.
    I’m shocked that VW’s official procedure is to drop the tranny, as your technique seemed quite straightforward and is far easier than dropping the trans.
    One question: what type of sensor was that, where you said it needed a particular alignment and you should’ve made match marks to ensure you returned it to the correct alignment?

    • @jackofalltrades7822
      @jackofalltrades7822  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the complement. It just hope it helps some folks out.
      That sensor is the transmission range sensor. That is the mechanism that tells the computer what gear the transmission is in.
      If it is out of alignment it could cause various problems to include the engine not starting because it does not know if the transmission is in park or neutral.

  • @marke8930
    @marke8930 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The gasket likely fails because of the dissimilar metal of the cover plate. The new pumps have a different cover plate. The pump isn't intended to be serviced, so any gasket for the cover plate isn't OEM. By replacing the seal and not the pump, it'll likely start leaking again at some point.

    • @jackofalltrades7822
      @jackofalltrades7822  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well of course it is going to start leaking again at some point. That’s why I had to make the repairs in the first place.
      It has been 2 years and 27k miles and so far not a drop, so considering the $2,000 bill from the dealership or the $40.00 gasket replacement, I think the choice is pretty clear.
      Thanks for watching.

      Even the dealer who sold it to me, reached out to me like a month after to ask what was it that I did to it because they had bought another one and it was giving them a similar issue. They never called again which leads me to believe they too solved the problem.
