Agree with what most people’s been saying that he was perfect for that era in Priest history. Some of his fills are so subtle but they do the job for the song perfectly. And the cymbal sounds on Point of Entry and Screaming is to die for!
I think steady is the perfect word. He is there to support Halford and the groove. A lot of newer bands just have drummers play endless fills with no support to the singer.
Dave Holland was a terrific drummer, more than people think. His work with Trapeze, especially live , Glenn Hughes and Judas Priest and more have to be recognized, and quite underrated. Progressive, Jazzy, Blues, Boogie , various use of the double bass when it had too, Heav, Doom, proto speed metal. A lot of people don't know how versatile he really was..
JP had one of the most solid rhythm sections of any metal band and probably the most chill, unassuming and out of the spot light pair in history. Dave Holland and Ian Hill were the driving force behind all those classic tracks. Just like any great metal band. The success starts with them. Black Sabbath had Ward/Butler, Iron Maiden had Harris/McBrain, and Dethclock had Pickles and Murderface. I rest my case
mcbrain and ward are funk and jazz guys. sabbath swings, and maiden has that bounce. holland was paid to do the acdc thing. holland has wicked chops and feel...just not in priest.

He was a victim of a horrible injustice, and definetly unguilty.! He was a great drummer, it`s about time he gets the honour he deserves.. He would turned 75 this spring, and he is not forgotten. His work with JP is absolutely brilliant, together with Ian Hill he made great grovves. I have just listening to those albums, his drum parts are just so great.!
He was demonized for a time with people like Tommy Iommi washing their hands of him, but before the alleged fiddling he was known as Mr Time and these isolated drum tracks show you why. I hope his name is cleared some day 😔🤟

Dave Holland, hands-down, the best Judas Priest drummer by far his brilliance can be summed up in the tracks, screaming for vengeance, and most drummers could probably not even play that song the way he does the first Phil is absolutely brilliant. I still can’t figure it out but I see you highlighted it here in the video, he looked awkward, playing drums, stiff and mechanical, but his beats are golden. He’s so supportive to the music.
The Holland era was great. On stage,he looked like it could all fly apart at any moment, but he always held it together. Tasty fills, and swing for miles. A real "meat & potatoes" drummer. His work with Trapeze is what got me noticing.
I think Rapid Fire, Steeler, Grinder, The Rage, Desert Plains, On the Run, Don't Go, Hot rockin, Riding on the wind, SFV, Freewheel Burning, Jawbreaker, The Sentinel, Night comes down, Ram it down , the way he played that live was totally hardcore are among my favorites Holland performances
Dave was hugely underappreciated!! His pocket was just so steady and so deep. No overloading everything with double bass nonsense. Leaving space for the rest of the band made them sound even bigger. The "simple" songs, "Living After Midnight", "You've Got Another Thing Coming", "Breakin' the Law", "Metal Gods" never feel right when Scott Travis plays them!! Sorry, they just don't! Yes, his personal life ended with great sadness, but his drumming spoke itself. My favorite track with Dave is "Steeler" from "British Steel". It was all about the groove and pocket. Just like Clive Burr in Iron Maiden. Both were amazing and did their jobs with exceptional power and steadiness.
100% spot on. Dave just had a sound and a groove that Scott Travis just didnt have, so much more depth to his playing. As well, I think Dave's drumming exceeded most of his contemporaries in the 80's metal scene
I couldnt agree more. Scott Travis' drumming lacks "feel". Almost boring in its mechanical lack of feel. Dave just had that touch and groove in his playing that coalesced the band into being what it was at rhe heights of their success in the 80's. He deserves alot more credit than what hes given. Very much like Mike Joyce from the Smiths, everyone thinks Morrissey/Marr, but the Smiths wouldnt be the Smiths without Mikes signature groove
Dave was my favorite Priest drummer. As you said, he was the drummer during Priest's peak years, and I feel like he was a key part of cementing the band's "sound". He may not have been the best "technical" drummer the band had (that would be Scott; I'd include Simon Phillips, but he was a session drummer, not a member of the band--though he was invited to become a member), but Dave had an unmistakable groove to his playing that I think Scott lacks. Dave's groove locked with Ian's perfectly. I noticed that they played songs that Dave played on for their Hall of Fame performance, songs that neither Les nor Scott recorded. I wonder if that's why they picked those particular songs (since Dave was being inducted postumously and couldn't be there), or if it was just a matter of picking their best-known songs.
The artistic summit was Defender of The Faith. And I'll throw in Turbo, as much as so many obtuse people don't want to understand it thinking (wrongly) that the choice of certain sounds was just a commercial choice. Priest always intercepted the spirit of the times, elevating it and taking it to shores never explored until then. Even now I look for something like Turbo (perfect blend of heavy metal and certain more sci-fi AOR sounds) and I cannot find anything remotely comparable.
Thank you for posting this and paying tribute to the part Holland played in Priest's most successful era and those albums that mean so much to us. Debates over "best drummer" are just plain silly and those that refer to Holland as less "technical" seem confused about what makes a profesional drummer.. Holland had style, power and swing and his meter was impeccable. All those aspects were obvious when you saw him playing live through those sets in the 80s.
The way he plays on "Fever" is just spot on "Mr.Time" He could have went "Bonzo" but I think he helps the song with his restraint. Rock on in heaven bro

The isolated drum tracks were a nice surprise. It's hard to pick just one song so I'll pick the Screaming for Vengeance album. I've always thought he did his best work on that album.
I dig humble, simple drumming as much as double bass and blast beat. A drummer who knows their place and isnt focused on drawing attention to themselves, just keeping time and driving beat is something you dont hear very often anymore
He was my personal favorite Priest drummer. Binks and Travis are more technical, but I prefer that Era of Priest music when Holland was in the band. Sometimes less is more, and I liked that more simplistic, steady groove Dave presented. He had great timing. I also loved his work in the band Trapeze.
You have to remember that he was doing this in the 70s when most drummers were there to be quiet and just keep the time for the most part. He is that good , the reason is he was a pioneer in his day .
I dont know if i agree when so many bands like Yes, the Who, Rush, Led Zeppelin, black sabbath, deep purple, etc. were all popular through the 70s. Even in the 60s. Their drumming was not sidelined at all
He was the right drummer for that era of hard music...I personally don't think they would have done as well with a Travis like drummer during that time...very "Bonhamesque", needed for the driving type of riffs of that time. Solid.
If I had to spotlight a single track, I pick The Sentinal. His drumming drives the dong forward yet accents the vocals and the guitars allowing them to be heard. The guy was listening to the other parts and supporting them in every song he played. The world needs more drummers like that.
Rapid Fire is a great drum track it keeps it time fast while mixing single and double bass, I actually find this hard to play along the tracks you covered

I was always a Bonham guy, but Dave left more of a mark on my style, somehow… his loping groove is absolutely unique, much like Phill Rudd but different, plus, he had serious chops if he needed them. One of my faves of all time!!
Les is my overall favorite Priest drummer, but Dave Holland’s drum work on Rapid Fire and Steeler is perfect for what the band needed at the time. Great snare sound too. Slava ukraini
I love his playing especially on Heading Out to The Highway from Priest and virtually anything from Trapeze. He played exactly what was needed to propel the song without frills or being too busy. That said I feel Scott Travis is the perfect Priest drummer.
Was he that great? I'm listening to Defenders of the Faith right now, and yes, he is that great. The last 30 seconds of Jawbreaker, and especially the last fill of the song are insanely good.
Best live performance of Dave Holland : New Haven 1988. He is really underrated as a heavy metal drummer. Dave Holland can't play on an album like Painkiller, for sure. But, on the Ram It Down tour, he proved that he was a really good metal drummer ! Best performance of Dave Holland on album : Point Of Entry, a lot of groove parts on this album, I love it !
I think he was steady, consistent and got the job done. That 's a good drummer. He deserves much credit for Priest's 80s metal success. My thing about Dave is that I don't know how much else he can do on the drums. As a banger, he was solid. I know he was in the band 'Trapeze' before joining Priest. The little I've seen of him there shows that once again he was a capable drummer outside of a bruising 4/4 beat but again nothing spectacular. My feeling is that Dave was a good solid drummer, though not in the class of Priests other drummers (spec: Phillips, Binks or Travis). He stayed within himself, excelling at pounding the skins (which not every drummer can do to by the way), becoming the backbone for Priest's directional change to start the 80s.
He had great rhythm and kept time like a steady Eddie. Not the most technical and not the most feel among drummers but still respected among his peers back in the day
They sounded best with him on drums. I always liked his drumming. He might not sound so special isolated, but the band had more of a groove with him. He sounded really good on Desert Plains….That might be my favorite Priest song. He was their best drummer.
I must have watched the 1982 concert on MTV dozens of times and I always liked his mini-drum solo in "Desert Plains." He was never the most technical drummer, but as you pointed out, for what Priest was doing in the 80's he was perfect. However, I was not a fan of his drum sounds on Defenders of the Faith and later. Too muffled.
That was the Allom production though on that particular album, for some reason it wasn't the best sounding JP album, probably the weakest of the '80s era in terms of sound recording.
He fitted right in with their sound. Love the albums Dave drummed on. Favourite one with him is Screaming For Vengeance track. I’ll ignore the Ram It Down album was as done with a drum machine and it’s awful

Too many awesome tunes to pick only one. DH had a fine instinct as to how to compliment any given arrangement with no need to throw in an infinite number of beats per measure aka speed metal stuff. The rhythm section with Ian Hill could not be better, and very sad how Dave's life developed in years after Priest. Check out the 'Priest Live' CD from the 'Fuel For Life' tour and please use headphones to really get lost in it.
I realized Scot Travis is no better than Dave Holland when I heard him playing the old Judas Priest songs. He may be very technical and precise but he lacks the proper and steady rhythm, style and feeling of Holland in songs seemingly simpler to perform. I mean, what Travis interprets Holland can do, but Travis can't. When Holland performed "The Sentinel" live, he improved it in many ways, including redoubles and tiny details on the cymbals that gave the song more drama...If you compare Travis' rhythm on an "easy" song and rythm like "Turbo Lover" it lacks the rhythmic flavor and happy mood of Holland on the same live version. Travis feels heartbroken, bored , impatient and annoyed by that song so controversial to some fans. He lose the pace. But Holland, like a real pro, does his job and delivers it.....a real master of the drums. Often something seemingly simple and without much change, is not. Also the sound Holland gets from its drums is more filling and forceful. I like and respect Travis, but is very technical, and very rough and doesn't have the sensitivity for those little details.
Dave Holland was really laid back and the best pocket drummer since John Bonham. Scott Trevis by comparison, always seems to be off beat when playing Dave's parts. I'm have become a huge Dave Holland fan 38 years after the last time I saw him play live.
So when I first got into Priest, I don't really have a preference. Then I went through a phase where I compared him to Les Binks, who is my favorite Priest drummer. I've come to really appreciate Dave Holland. He's kinda like Phil Rudd (another favorite drummer of mine) and he's perfect on British Steel through Turbo! He was a steady drummer and always had the perfect rhythm and timing. The fact is Judas Priest had three of the best drummers in metal history!
I must admit that the isolated drum parts sound pretty good, but I'm afraid I've always found his drumming a bit pedestrian. According to the sleeve notes for the 2001 remaster of Painkiller, the arrival of Scott Travis allowed the band to '...display a power and intensity that was practically impossible to achieve up until his arrival', and I'm inclined to agree. I'll just end by saying that I hope that if any new evidence does come to light exonerating him, his conviction will be overturned (albeit posthumously), and leave it at that.
dave holland wasn't allowed to be good in priest. listen to any bootlegs of his first tour with the band, where he follows binks' more faithfully and plays with some swing. by the end of the british steel run, they had beaten all the bounce and razzle dazzle out of him by then and pushed him toward that more acdc style approach. just listen to some of his fills.....the guy 100% has chops. he used to play with trapeze, so the guy can 100% groove and shuffle.
I agree that his playing with Trapeze was more impressive (he even played double bass drums in 1971!). However, even on the bootlegs you were referring to, he was still struggling with some of the songs played by Binks (Sinner, etc.). Without knowing which drummer is playing around 1979, I know exactly who between the two is playing by hearing a few minutes at the beginning of the concert. Dave was even surprised that he was picked to become the new drummer.

What complete hypocrisy. Leading that charge is the singer who actually has no business singing on stage live anymore if you ask me. Halford’s attempts to perform at a passable level fall short. Also some stories of his solo sexual exploits are monstrous and some think more devastating than what DH was accused of. Why is it some continue to act out and promote themselves as something they aren’t. I know without DH steady Freddy Drum discipline Judas would never have had as much success here in America 🇺🇸 on FM Radio. As far as S. Travis , that same old bullshit Painkiller lick can only go so far. Also, he has no ability to tune his snare drum correctly. Who plays TAMA anymore too. Scott Travis has no groove, no swing, no soul.. big mistake going that route for a classic Heavy Metal band. I hate bands that try to keep up with the times to please their record label and think they can actually blend into any kind of trend happening unnoticed and unharmed.. Turbo was a great album and it suited them fine while trying to upgrade the heavy metal sound for the futuristic 80's stylings but Painkiller was the absolute worst thing they could have done, they lost me as a fan and consequently never truly recovered from that. oh but yeah, Dave H was a solid and perfect reliable rhythm section so the Priest could focus on writing great material and showcasing their guitar prowess and vocal stylings at their max

Love your Clive Burr analogy. Spot on. Listening to Priest it was Dave's drumming that caught my ears first as a young kid in the 80s.
Amen to that! Dave and Clive are two of my three favorite metal drummers (Lars Ulrich is the 3rd) of all time.
Dave has always been my favorite. Everything he played was perfect for every song. He was great on the old stuff too.
He had GREAT groove and was already known as a great drummer with Trapeze. Well tuned drum sound and underrated with Priest. Great with Ian.

Dave's groove locked with Ian's perfectly.
I noticed that they played songs that Dave played on for their Hall of Fame performance, songs that neither Les nor Scott recorded. I wonder if that's why they picked those particular songs (since Dave was being inducted postumously and couldn't be there), or if it was just a matter of picking their best-known songs.
Peak years ? You mean "commercial" peak years, right ? Dave Holland was Judas Priest drummer from 79-89 / The peak was before 79'
The artistic summit was Defender of The Faith.
And I'll throw in Turbo, as much as so many obtuse people don't want to understand it thinking (wrongly) that the choice of certain sounds was just a commercial choice.
Priest always intercepted the spirit of the times, elevating it and taking it to shores never explored until then.
Even now I look for something like Turbo (perfect blend of heavy metal and certain more sci-fi AOR sounds) and I cannot find anything remotely comparable.

Thank you for posting this and paying tribute to the part Holland played in Priest's most successful era and those albums that mean so much to us. Debates over "best drummer" are just plain silly and those that refer to Holland as less "technical" seem confused about what makes a profesional drummer.. Holland had style, power and swing and his meter was impeccable. All those aspects were obvious when you saw him playing live through those sets in the 80s.
His fills were so powerful and memorable - they were an integral part of the songs. And his snare, bass drum and toms sounded like cannons.
The way he plays on "Fever" is just spot on "Mr.Time" He could have went "Bonzo" but I think he helps the song with his restraint. Rock on in heaven bro
The sound of his kit is unreal. The toms with no heads on the bottom I always loved that sound. He also wasn’t actually guilty of what he did. He was set up by two teenage idiots

The isolated drum tracks were a nice surprise. It's hard to pick just one song so I'll pick the Screaming for Vengeance album. I've always thought he did his best work on that album.
Take these chain reminds of me being 3 or 4 years old hearing it on the radio quite a bit in the early 80s...love it!
I dig humble, simple drumming as much as double bass and blast beat. A drummer who knows their place and isnt focused on drawing attention to themselves, just keeping time and driving beat is something you dont hear very often anymore
He was my personal favorite Priest drummer. Binks and Travis are more technical, but I prefer that Era of Priest music when Holland was in the band. Sometimes less is more, and I liked that more simplistic, steady groove Dave presented. He had great timing. I also loved his work in the band Trapeze.
Riding on the wind is top notch but so was victim of changes.
You have to remember that he was doing this in the 70s when most drummers were there to be quiet and just keep the time for the most part.
He is that good , the reason is he was a pioneer in his day .
I dont know if i agree when so many bands like Yes, the Who, Rush, Led Zeppelin, black sabbath, deep purple, etc. were all popular through the 70s. Even in the 60s. Their drumming was not sidelined at all
Les Binks wasn't " quiet"
He was the right drummer for that era of hard music...I personally don't think they would have done as well with a Travis like drummer during that time...very "Bonhamesque", needed for the driving type of riffs of that time. Solid.
If I had to spotlight a single track, I pick The Sentinal. His drumming drives the dong forward yet accents the vocals and the guitars allowing them to be heard. The guy was listening to the other parts and supporting them in every song he played. The world needs more drummers like that.

Amen to that. Way too many drummers don't really pay attention to the nuances of the music and it shows.
I think his FEEL was perfect for those albums, some metal guys think more added stuff is superior.

I was always a Bonham guy, but Dave left more of a mark on my style, somehow… his loping groove is absolutely unique, much like Phill Rudd but different, plus, he had serious chops if he needed them. One of my faves of all time!!
Les is my overall favorite Priest drummer, but Dave Holland’s drum work on Rapid Fire and Steeler is perfect for what the band needed at the time. Great snare sound too.

I love his playing especially on Heading Out to The Highway from Priest and virtually anything from Trapeze. He played exactly what was needed to propel the song without frills or being too busy. That said I feel Scott Travis is the perfect Priest drummer.
Was he that great? I'm listening to Defenders of the Faith right now, and yes, he is that great. The last 30 seconds of Jawbreaker, and especially the last fill of the song are insanely good.
All of Dave's fills were insanely good, especially on Rapid Fire, Bloodstone and Fever.
Best live performance of Dave Holland : New Haven 1988. He is really underrated as a heavy metal drummer. Dave Holland can't play on an album like Painkiller, for sure. But, on the Ram It Down tour, he proved that he was a really good metal drummer ! Best performance of Dave Holland on album : Point Of Entry, a lot of groove parts on this album, I love it !

I think he was steady, consistent and got the job done. That 's a good drummer. He deserves much credit for Priest's 80s metal success. My thing about Dave is that I don't know how much else he can do on the drums. As a banger, he was solid. I know he was in the band 'Trapeze' before joining Priest. The little I've seen of him there shows that once again he was a capable drummer outside of a bruising 4/4 beat but again nothing spectacular. My feeling is that Dave was a good solid drummer, though not in the class of Priests other drummers (spec: Phillips, Binks or Travis). He stayed within himself, excelling at pounding the skins (which not every drummer can do to by the way), becoming the backbone for Priest's directional change to start the 80s.

He had great rhythm and kept time like a steady Eddie. Not the most technical and not the most feel among drummers but still respected among his peers back in the day

They sounded best with him on drums. I always liked his drumming. He might not sound so special isolated, but the band had more of a groove with him. He sounded really good on Desert Plains….That might be my favorite Priest song. He was their best drummer.
I must have watched the 1982 concert on MTV dozens of times and I always liked his mini-drum solo in "Desert Plains." He was never the most technical drummer, but as you pointed out, for what Priest was doing in the 80's he was perfect. However, I was not a fan of his drum sounds on Defenders of the Faith and later. Too muffled.
That was the Allom production though on that particular album, for some reason it wasn't the best sounding JP album, probably the weakest of the '80s era in terms of sound recording.

In my own humble and personal opinion, Scott Travis plays old Judas Priest songs without any soul. His lazy quarter notes and stick twirling are a disservice to what the band was
He also plays with Thin Lizzy and has no feel there either

Hell yes! Those are the albums that got me into the band, beginning with Unleashed, the first Priest album (cassette actually) I ever bought.
Too many awesome tunes to pick only one. DH had a fine instinct as to how to compliment any given arrangement with no need to throw in an infinite number of beats per measure aka speed metal stuff. The rhythm section with Ian Hill could not be better, and very sad how Dave's life developed in years after Priest. Check out the 'Priest Live' CD from the 'Fuel For Life' tour and please use headphones to really get lost in it.
Kind of like Clive burr was the perfect drummer to give iron maiden some punky edge .

hmmm. Judas Priest had to use drum machines on the last pair of albums before finally letting him go. That's how amazing and steady he was.

I realized Scot Travis is no better than Dave Holland when I heard him playing the old Judas Priest songs. He may be very technical and precise but he lacks the proper and steady rhythm, style and feeling of Holland in songs seemingly simpler to perform. I mean, what Travis interprets Holland can do, but Travis can't.
When Holland performed "The Sentinel" live, he improved it in many ways, including redoubles and tiny details on the cymbals that gave the song more drama...If you compare Travis' rhythm on an "easy" song and rythm like "Turbo Lover" it lacks the rhythmic flavor and happy mood of Holland on the same live version. Travis feels heartbroken, bored , impatient and annoyed by that song so controversial to some fans. He lose the pace.
But Holland, like a real pro, does his job and delivers it.....a real master of the drums.
Often something seemingly simple and without much change, is not.
Also the sound Holland gets from its drums is more filling and forceful.
I like and respect Travis, but is very technical, and very rough and doesn't have the sensitivity for those little details.

Dave Holland fan 38 years after the last time I saw him play live.
So when I first got into Priest, I don't really have a preference. Then I went through a phase where I compared him to Les Binks, who is my favorite Priest drummer.
I've come to really appreciate Dave Holland. He's kinda like Phil Rudd (another favorite drummer of mine) and he's perfect on British Steel through Turbo!
He was a steady drummer and always had the perfect rhythm and timing.
The fact is Judas Priest had three of the best drummers in metal history!

He played what went with the music. They all reacted together to make their sound. Still like it.
I must admit that the isolated drum parts sound pretty good, but I'm afraid I've always found his drumming a bit pedestrian. According to the sleeve notes for the 2001 remaster of Painkiller, the arrival of Scott Travis allowed the band to '...display a power and intensity that was practically impossible to achieve up until his arrival', and I'm inclined to agree.
I'll just end by saying that I hope that if any new evidence does come to light exonerating him, his conviction will be overturned (albeit posthumously), and leave it at that.
It was certainly good enough, but it didn’t elevate the band.
He was good for the time and had laid down the foundation for priests musical catalog. He's apart of what made the band great
dave holland wasn't allowed to be good in priest. listen to any bootlegs of his first tour with the band, where he follows binks' more faithfully and plays with some swing. by the end of the british steel run, they had beaten all the bounce and razzle dazzle out of him by then and pushed him toward that more acdc style approach. just listen to some of his fills.....the guy 100% has chops. he used to play with trapeze, so the guy can 100% groove and shuffle.
I agree that his playing with Trapeze was more impressive (he even played double bass drums in 1971!). However, even on the bootlegs you were referring to, he was still struggling with some of the songs played by Binks (Sinner, etc.). Without knowing which drummer is playing around 1979, I know exactly who between the two is playing by hearing a few minutes at the beginning of the concert. Dave was even surprised that he was picked to become the new drummer.

To see the current people claiming to be JP acting like their shit don’t stink and actually removing photographs of Dave H. as drummer in their albums sleeve and maybe certain covers. What complete hypocrisy. Leading that charge is the singer who actually has no business singing on stage live anymore if you ask me. Halford’s attempts to perform at a passable level fall short. Also some stories of his solo sexual exploits are monstrous and some think more devastating than what DH was accused of. Why is it some continue to act out and promote themselves as something they aren’t. I know without DH steady Freddy Drum discipline Judas would never have had as much success here in America 🇺🇸 on FM Radio. As far as S. Travis , that same old bullshit Painkiller lick can only go so far. Also, he has no ability to tune his snare drum correctly. Who plays TAMA anymore too. Ludwig, Slingerland and maybe even Pearl would definitely help your same old same old drumming.

Scott Travis has no groove, no swing, no soul.. big mistake going that route for a classic Heavy Metal band. I hate bands that try to keep up with the times to please their record label and think they can actually blend into any kind of trend happening unnoticed and unharmed.. Turbo was a great album and it suited them fine while trying to upgrade the heavy metal sound for the futuristic 80's stylings but Painkiller was the absolute worst thing they could have done, they lost me as a fan and consequently never truly recovered from that. oh but yeah, Dave H was a solid and perfect reliable rhythm section so the Priest could focus on writing great material and showcasing their guitar prowess and vocal stylings at their max
