Best live performance of Dave Holland : New Haven 1988. He is really underrated as a heavy metal drummer. Dave Holland can't play on an album like Painkiller, for sure. But, on the Ram It Down tour, he proved that he was a really good metal drummer ! Best performance of Dave Holland on album : Point Of Entry, a lot of groove parts on this album, I love it !
@@skxj Absolutely. In fact, I wouldn’t even consider vintage (pre-Defenders Of The Faith) Priest as Metal at all. And, I say that with total respect. I think the way the 3 albums that preceded it sound is very straightforward Rock - Heavy Rock more than Heavy Metal - primarily because of how solid Holland is. I think it really set them apart from their peers before 1984, which, for me, was the beginning of their downfall. Again, because of the drums. But, how they were recorded, not how they were played. By the time they dropped Turbo, they were completely unlistenable for me.
THose gota be some of the earliest examples of PAISTE rude cymbals Dave rocks at the US festival in 82-83,i was only 10 years old then.but my first actual "pro" cymbal was a18inch paiste rude 3000 crash/ride i saved all sum mer working at a gun club, they were expensive way back then also, back when musicians friend was called the woodwind and basswind shop.took me a whole year and a half to crack it too!
Dave was my favorite Judas Priest drummer. Yes, Les and Scott are more technical, but I like the more simplistic approach of Dave on the albums he played on. For me, sometimes less is more, and I think that is the type of drummer the guys in Priest were looking for at the time. I've heard Scott play some of Dave's songs where he added double bass and it did not sound good in my opinion.
He did a project with Iommie and Hughes (DEP Sessions) but they changed his drum parts out for some Tears for Fears guys (Jimmy Copley) because of his ...well..Conviction The case sounds like he was railroaded ... regardless he ended up a social pariah like Michael Jackson

Dave Holland was always one of my favorite drummers! Solid, strong, fast and heavy but never over did it with unnecessary fills and showey crap! RIP Dave
The Metal Drummer that played in the Pocket. Like Jazz Just faster. When I heard the intro to "Riding on the Wind", that was it. I didn't even need to hear rest of the song. And didn't for some time. I'd just play the intro over and over. It certainly influenced me to say yes to a drum set and being a drummer. Even if it is just for me to blow off some steam. And annoy the neighbors. lol. Screaming For Vengeance turned me into a fan and Priest has been my Fav Heavy Metal band ever since. Both versions of the band are actually pretty good. But live KK Downing's Priest is one of "the best" sounding acts live I've ever heard. 2nd best live sound for me? Front of House with KK is a magician!
Dave really held it together with his playing. But I never did hear why he left because when it was announced Scott Travis got the gig with Priest I knew he would get along with everyone in the band and fit. Relief They didn't hire Michael Jackson's drummer in other words. I was young, that's how my brain didn't work sometimes. lol
He was the quiet member of Judas priest but not live he wasn't. Anyone that saw J P live during his tenure know what I mean. He never missed a beat. r.i.p to this metal god🙏🥁
Try to imagine SC laying down the groove and subtlety for the album versions of the songs on British Steel and Screaming? Exactly! No comparison. No can do. If you listen to bass and drums only versions of Bloodstone, for example, you can see how his playing really helped the albums shine, albeit in an understated way. His work in the hi-hat especially was just super. DH was crucial to the brilliant JP albums and live performances of the early 80s.
Loved his groovy style, especially when settinig the tempo for a HEAVY METAL TORNADO like fawking JUDAS PREIST! Watch his playing on the hu8ge U.S apple computer festival with Van Halen and Quiet Riot, sharing a stage with Alex Van Halen,Terry Bozzio, and Frankie Vallie is no easy feat, and in front of a 100,000plus headbangers, he makes it look easy, and swings the whole time.Dave holland, hell yeah. Basically, Scott is a metal drummer (fast, doublebass to the top, overplayed fills all the time). Dave was an at the pocket drummer. Someone that brings a solid base for the other guys in JP. No overplayed fills, no double bass at all. But without him, JP wouldn't been as succesfull as they were. Total respect for him. RIP. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I am by far no expert on JP but know there main stream hits.... I do have a fun JP story. I was in Phoenix visiting my father. I was in a jewelry store looking for something for wife. And there was Rob Halford. I asked are you Rob Halford. Yes he was. I did not want to bother him and said nice to meet you. Not being a die hard fan that knew their music I did not want to fake it. Got to meet Dave in September 1988 in Dallas , Texas. Great guy and a superb drummer. JP would not have made it on and into American 🇺🇸 FM Radio without his steady drumming. It sickens me that JP now barely gives him any credit for anything he gave the band. Anything after Painkiller to me is not really my kinda Priest. That’s just my feelings no one else’s. One of the most underated hardrock/metal musican ever. He was a brilliant drummer both in Trapeze and Priest.
One of my favorite metal drummers and he had the best drum sound ever.
He had a tone to his kick drum that was easily recognizable as Judas Priest.
I was a fortunate guy who got to see his favorite band of all time over 10 different times, priceless!
Might be my favourite drummer of Priest. Especially after seeing him perform in San Bernardino. Great worker!
