Dave Lombardo IMO is the greatest thrash drummer out there! Paul Bostaph is really really good, but he didn't help bring Slayer to the metal masses with his style, it was already cemented by Dave. My vote for another drummer expose would be Charlie Benante.
I really like Bostaph. It seems like there's a certain technical edge that pops out when he plays. You never hear about him like you do with Dave and Gene. But they are all phenomenal.
Except Gene himself acknowledges that he wasn't that good of a roadie and ended up getting kicked out. Fortunately, he put in the work and ended up joining Dark Angel. The rest is history!
Dave, gene and Tomas Hakke are my top 3 of all time, though I didn't know gene was the death drummer, his work with Devin Townsend and SYL is insane! 🤘
Gene knew how to play double bass with a single pedal, and taught Dave how to use double bass pedals. Dave was the first to ever use double bass pedals.
I went a few years ago to a Suicidal Tendencies concert in Berlin. Mike invited us all on stage and a bunch got up and we just moshed our asses of next to the band. I stood directly in front of Dave Lombardo with only the sound of his live drum sound in my face, I only got the acoustic sound not the miked sound. I felt every kick, snare and symbol. Awesome 👏
He is one of the best drummers period. Creative, technical, great feel to his playing, he is up there in the pantheon of great drummers regardless of genre
Lombardo imo is the best metal drummer alive today. He has a certain "swing" (maybe not the word) that more technical drummers usually lack. Most creative fills since Bill Ward.

"South Of Heaven" was "The Lombardo" album for me. The Man is awesome, playing with true "musicality" if there is a term : he plays what every song needs, he is fast, powerful, he has groove, fantastic ideas, awesome sound .... A true god of drums. The Original Slayer were the Fab Four of Extreme Metal ! Kerry should be ashamed for the way he treated Dave :(

@@barrykinard6096 love seasons but in retrospect it feels like a watered down radio friendly version of SOH imo, it's just not the same frenetic thrash onslaught, and by 1990 metal started to begin having some mainstream appeal, and song writing/arranging,and music production had evolved quite considerably, they just don't compare, like reign in blood and south of heaven do! I'd be interested to see if the was a gear/sponsor change in between soh and seasons🤔
Mr Bungle is incredible live!! Saw them in for the Mr Bungle album and followed them for 6 live show that where always insane, tight but radically different. This was when Mike was fully masked and mental tearing up stages and equipment lolz the best time of my life. The covers they always threw in where somehow better than the OGs.
@yhwhsozo3680 Nice. I got into them right before California came out. Didn't get to see them on tour until a year ago. I definitely prefer the old, weird Mr. Bungle, but they're still great live as a thrash band and still throw in the out of place covers.
How about John Dette? Never got to record with them and the whole band faded into obscurity in that era, but interestingly enough he's gone pretty much under the radar.
There are some songs online of John playing those shows in Australia back in the day when Dave was fired again. Not gonna lie, at least at that point in time, he was the best of the 3 live. So much power, taste and confidence.
I remember realizing how great a drummer Dave was on the South of Heaven album. That album gave him more space to show his creativity and sophistication. His genius was to put fills where there was so little space to fill. That pushed his creativity to say something meaningful in a blur of guitars. He always provided the right rhythm to support the riffs, but he found a way to provide the right fills and accents. That ride cymbal bell strike on War Ensemble is classic example of his genius and humor.
You need to focus on Dave's fills, e.g. Ghosts of War, that same Postmortem live clip, Rusty Nail from Grip Inc, start of South of Heaven, Seasons of the Abyss.
It's because he leads with his left hand, and it leaves you in a different position after, during and before fills, that you simply can't replicate leading with the right hand

To me Dave Lombardo just sounds more organic than may other Metal drummers. On these isolated tracks I find the dynamics in the double bass for Raining Blood eye-opening. The different attack levels really shape the groove in that part.

Dave was one of the guys who made me want to play drums. I wish you had chosen "Mandatory Suicide" but hey, that's just my taste. "Mandatory Suicide" has one of the best fills of any metal song, ever... at about 2:48. "Silent Scream" is another masterpiece. Obviously my favourite album is "South of Heaven".
Dave Lombardo is definitely in my top 5. I agree he's not the most technical drummer and some say he has timing issues. But for self taught and the way he has pioneered thrash metal, definitely one of the greatest...
Personally my favorite drumming of Dave pertaining to technicality is definitely South of Heaven the entire album. Esp on songs like Behind the Crooked Cross, and crazy double bass endurance on Silent Scream. For some reason Dave stated he hates the drumming on that album, but he was playing on another level with the drum fills and being more technical compared to his straight up thrash drumming like on Reign In Blood. Do a video on Paul Bostaph. Paul's drumming on Forbidden's first album Forbidden Evil is awesome. Even before he was in Slayer, he was already killing it Forbidden. There's footage of Paul performing with Forbidden on the Combat records Combat Tour 2 movie from 1988.
I’m NEW to drumming but not to Slayer. I grew up when they and Metallica etc. were starting out. Dave Lombardo just gives me an insane rush (I do love Rush also). The feeling of top of the line hardcore drums matched with Slayers intense everything else- yeah it’s just kick ass !
Dave kicked the doors open and took no prisoners on what metal drums should sound like. Period. Not that other drummers weren't badass in their own right. It's just Dave pushed that bar up of what is the standard. As far as the best drummer in the genre, my vote is Chuck Biscuits. He reminds me so much of Ringo Starr. What they are doing sounds easy... easy to follow for the listeners... but when you dig deeper it is so incredibly hard. 90% of really good drummers can't match their madness from beginning to end of a track. Plus the Chuck Biscuits head banging while playing is absolutely epic.
As "technically" powerful as Dave's drumming has always been, it's his "feel" for what every moment in a song requires that makes him a titan. In the end, Dave leaves nothing left to be desired; he pours on the gold in every project. 10/10 ⭐ s
Being Technical means little, if you are not innovative. Dave is innovative, and pushed thrash drumming to a whole new level. He is the undisputed thrash drumming king.
Dave Lombard to me it is one of the best metal drummers out there. Precision and speed he's the man hands down. Seen him play a place called JJ Kelly's years ago and then everybody there was there because of Dave Lombardo. The dude is a god when it comes to the drums
Of that generation of drummers Mike Bordin of Faith No More is my favorite. Tribal, groovy and funky but HEAVY!!! One of the most underrated drummers in my 52 years of life.
Dave pioneered thrash double bass, period!! The speed at which he had those bass pedals going was revolutionary at that time. Just as most other instruments, there's pioneers & there's the follow-ups! Sure, there's a multitude of players, now, that are playing double bass at 300bpm+, but, without pioneering influences, such as Dave, exactly, where would they be & what would they be doing on their bass drums? Maybe you missed my signature, but, I'm a drummer, same age as just about everyone in the big 4 & I've met almost everyone but the guys in Anthrax. Smoked with Tom Araya, hung out with Metallica backstage, sat alone at a table with James Hetfield conversing about hotrods, hung out with Nick Menza discussing his new cage system, where it came from & how it was stowed, I was a musician/drummer in Dallas, TX & that afforded me this kind of clout. Oh, and, let me not forget to mention, I knew, and, hung out with Pantera, especially, Vinnie, when they were just a local band too, even warmed up for them... etc, etc...man! So, I was TRYING to keep up with Dave when Slayer's first album hit, along with Lars, Gar, & any other speed demon I could find on vinyl & play along with on a 500 watt stereo system 😂, so, unless you lived in & tried to copy it, as it was happening/coming out, then, maybe, just maybe, I'll listen. Now, as far as Charlie goes, his signature pioneering sound was the original blast beat. It wasn't as gnarly as recent drummers, but, neither is Dave's double bass work. Holy hell, I tried & tried to figure out, by sound, not watching, how in the hell he was hitting that snare so fast, along with all the other toms, cymbals & high-hat, at the same time, without missing a snare beat! I'll gladly give credit where credit is due, trust me, due credits are what they are & nobody can change it.
@benttwisted210 Doesn't change the fact I think Charlie is better. He can literally do anything Lombardo does plus more. Look at their drum battles live on TH-cam Charlie definately is more impressive and versatile.

Dave did play in Suicidal Tendencies for a bit, and, he tried to get a few other projects off the ground. Charlie is more of a musician, in where, he didn't just venture out, he was willing to learn more & more, like any good musician should. I, myself, gave up at 30yo like I SHOULDN'T have. I let outside people pull me away from music to "have a career", I had just figured out I needed to start climbing the musical ladder to success instead of trying to be loyal, to the death, with one band..."man, we'll make it if we just stick together", ya, sounds nice Mark! 😂

When Dave started out, he was among the best of the best as far as drummers go. Hyper-speed double-bass drumming was a rarity then. Today however, you've got a shitload of death metal drummers out there who can play circles around Dave. What a difference a few decades makes.
I read in the Metal Blade records book that Dave recorded the drums for Show no mercy in two parts. All the cymbals on another day! That's crazy Edit: oops he mentioned it in the video. Cool!

G.O.A.T. confirmed It should be noted that he has been drumming with The Misfits recently - which was a surprise for this guy, until most of the way through the show, Glenn, The Main Man himself - announced the players... Wow! Those songs are NOT as simple as one may think - in that department. No wonder they sounded so good while keeping the energy to the max throughout! THAT is a perfect match, imo. One made in...well, let's just say south of...u get it.
Lombardo is my favorite drummer ever and I’m on his side in his feud with Slayer (he’s since moved on and wish the band well but Kerry is still a baby about the whole thing)

In my honest opinion, the drummers that truly pushed the boundaries and revolutionized metal drumming was Dave of course, Charlie Benante, Clive Burr and last but certainly not least, Gar Samuelson!!! R.I.P CLIVE BURR AND GAR SAMUELSON!!🤘🤘
Dave is a legend for sure. One of the best thrash drummers of all time. A true pioneer. But IMO, I put Charlie Benante slightly ahead of him. The godfather of the blast beat is still as quick today in his 60's as he was in his 20's. And also IMO, his slower beats how much more of a groove than Dave's.
Dave is my favorite thrash drummer for sure. Just seemed like he can put a drum fill anywhere in a song. Another drummer to help carry a band to the next level would be Nick Menza. I think he was better than Gar too.

Being Technical means little, if you are not innovative. Dave is innovative, and pushed thrash drumming to a whole new level. He is the undisputed thrash drumming king.

Dave Lombard to me it is one of the best metal drummers out there. Precision and speed he's the man hands down. Seen him play a place called JJ Kelly's years ago and then everybody there was there because of Dave Lombardo. The dude is a god when it comes to the drums

Of that generation of drummers Mike Bordin of Faith No More is my favorite. Tribal, groovy and funky but HEAVY!!! One of the most underrated drummers in my 52 years of life.
Dave pioneered thrash double bass, period!! The speed at which he had those bass pedals going was revolutionary at that time. Just as most other instruments, there's pioneers & there's the follow-ups! Sure, there's a multitude of players, now, that are playing double bass at 300bpm+, but, without pioneering influences, such as Dave, exactly, where would they be & what would they be doing on their bass drums?

@@jamiewalton666 sorry, but, afraid not, he was following the leader. Besides, that, Charlie wasn't the first drummer for Anthrax. Maybe you missed my signature, but, I'm a drummer, same age as just about everyone in the big 4 & I've met almost everyone but the guys in Anthrax. Smoked with Tom Araya, hung out with Metallica backstage, sat alone at a table with James Hetfield conversing about hotrods, hung out with Nick Menza discussing his new cage system, where it came from & how it was stowed, I was a musician/drummer in Dallas, TX & that afforded me this kind of clout. Oh, and, let me not forget to mention, I knew, and, hung out with Pantera, especially, Vinnie, when they were just a local band too, even warmed up for them... etc, etc...man! So, I was TRYING to keep up with Dave when Slayer's first album hit, along with Lars, Gar, & any other speed demon I could find on vinyl & play along with on a 500 watt stereo system 😂, so, unless you lived in & tried to copy it, as it was happening/coming out, then, maybe, just maybe, I'll listen. Now, as far as Charlie goes, his signature pioneering sound was the original blast beat. It wasn't as gnarly as recent drummers, but, neither is Dave's double bass work. Holy hell, I tried & tried to figure out, by sound, not watching, how in the hell he was hitting that snare so fast, along with all the other toms, cymbals & high-hat, at the same time, without missing a snare beat! I'll gladly give credit where credit is due, trust me, due credits are what they are & nobody can change it.
@benttwisted210 Doesn't change the fact I think Charlie is better. He can literally do anything Lombardo does plus more. Look at their drum battles live on TH-cam Charlie definately is more impressive and versatile.
@@jamiewalton666 see, that's where we agree, for sure! Now, Charlie is much more versatile, where Dave, stayed inside his bubble & didn't progress as much. Dave did play in Suicidal Tendencies for a bit, and, he tried to get a few other projects off the ground. Charlie is more of a musician, in where, he didn't just venture out, he was willing to learn more & more, like any good musician should. I, myself, gave up at 30yo like I SHOULDN'T have. I let outside people pull me away from music to "have a career", I had just figured out I needed to start climbing the musical ladder to success instead of trying to be loyal, to the death, with one band..."man, we'll make it if we just stick together", ya, sounds nice Mark! 😂

When Dave started out, he was among the best of the best as far as drummers go. Hyper-speed double-bass drumming was a rarity then. Today however, you've got a shitload of death metal drummers out there who can play circles around Dave. What a difference a few decades makes.

It should be noted that he has been drumming with The Misfits recently - which was a surprise for this guy, until most of the way through the show, Glenn, The Main Man himself - announced the players... Wow! Those songs are NOT as simple as one may think - in that department. No wonder they sounded so good while keeping the energy to the max throughout! THAT is a perfect match, imo. One made in...well, let's just say south of...u get it.

Lombardo is my favorite drummer ever and I’m on his side in his feud with Slayer (he’s since moved on and wish the band well but Kerry is still a baby about the whole thing)
Dave is probably one if my favorite drummers to listen to and watch. Dave with the misfits live sounds like the albums but a bit faster and its always fun to see danzig try to keep up lol sadly i never saw dave with slayer

Dave's style is like Barimore Barlow on crack. One of my favorites and I'm fortunate to have seen him several times back in the early days.
It's not only the technical side of it...the rate of AGGRESSION in a Lombardo drum fill is the thing. It hangs you on the wall by the throath

Dave is a legend for sure. One of the best thrash drummers of all time. A true pioneer. But IMO, I put Charlie Benante slightly ahead of him. The godfather of the blast beat is still as quick today in his 60's as he was in his 20's. And also IMO, his slower beats how much more of a groove than Dave's.

Dave is my favorite thrash drummer for sure. Just seemed like he can put a drum fill anywhere in a song. Another drummer to help carry a band to the next level would be Nick Menza. I think he was better than Gar too.
