- In this 4 part blog, we bring you a timeless American story of a 2nd grade educated mechanical and mathematical genius in the world's master carver, Ernest "Mooney" Warther (1885-1973). Mooney was renowned for his walnut, ebony and ivory train carvings.
Absolutely the most amazing man i have ever seen. So much done in only 5 hours a day. Such an inspiration for people young and older today.
I grew up in Dover, OH. My dad was friends with Mooney. I still have the pliers he carved and signed for me 50 yrs ago.
I grew up in Marietta just south of you, used to take my mom to the museum to look at the trains as well. She had alzheimers and it seemed to calm her....
I too have the wooden pliers , I believe it was the son or grandson that carved them , he looked to be pushin 70+
@@kennethearlwigglesworth6034 Probably Dave his son carved them. The family actually has carving parties where they all carve pliers and visit. LOL. Dave has a museum near Sugarcreek of his carvings. I went to school with Mooney's grandson, we are still friends to this day.

Amazing story , thank you . I have heard of this family for a long time a time and I am 71 years young . I found my first knife as well when I was young . My uncle cleaned and sharpened it for me and taught me to always respect a knife . I still have that knife today , very worn but its retired and in my collections cabinet . I love to carve and make walking canes , furniture , and what ever I want or need and as the old saying goes , if it's fun it's never work . Thank you for this video .
This is by far the most amzing man and family. They are the richest family in the world,& it has nothing to do with money. I went to this museum years ago when I was young & took my son when he was young,anyone that misses out on visiting this Museum is missing out on what I call a hand me down thrill of a life time.I can't wait to go again with my grandkids when I get some,or even a friend. The Warther Family has a great history, Ernest was an amazing man, I like how he was half artist half engineer, very much a modern Da Vinci- of wood.

I am going to visit this place! The story is super inspirational! I am in my 2nd year woodcarving. ( much to learn)
My wife and I recently visited the Warther Museum... one of the best places that I have ever visited, and it was only about a 2 hour drive... went with a close friend and his wife, who had been there before, and highly recommended it... I HIGHLY recommend it too !
If you are in the area, also go visit the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio... you will need to make reservations ahead of time for a scheduled tour... another amazing place !

Some videos are moving. This is certainly the case, but not only. Men of true genius, and I mean true, are few and far between. They are fired by something that common mortals cannot apprehend ; that certain forms of greatness, or grandeur, can be attained. These exceptional beings go down in the Halls of Time. I'm glad that their families can still carry on their memories, in some cases. This alone is rare.

Genius comes in all shapes. This man was a genius. I can't help but wonder what he would have managed with a formal education.
They would have made a complete idiot of him.
He probably wouldn't have achieved this much but who knows?

Can anybody tell me what he's saying at 3:12? You shouldn't use a blade longer than your thumb because the blade will ... ???
The piece of blade protruding beyond your thumb will get in the way of what you are trying to cut. So you don't use a blade longer than your thumb.
get in the way of your rotor (rotation)
the blade will get in your road. meaning in your way.
