  • Lightsabers are awesome, but not all of us have After Effects. Today we're making a similar (and maybe even better effect) in the free 3D software Blender in less than 5 minutes.

    I'm a big Star Wars fan myself and I've always wondered how to do stuff like this. I am ALSO a Video Game Design major and college right now, and finding out you can do this stuff in a free program that I heavily work in is so awesome! Great and simple tutorial, taught me some cool tricks I can potentially use in the future!

    GREAT video really explains alot of VFX to me

    Really solid! They way the brightness dims near the end of the blade on big swings is awesome!
    Do you have any thoughts on adding a random flicker to the brightness of the blade and on the diameter of the blade mesh itself? I'd say that's the biggest thing missing from the effect at this point.
    Really awesome result!

    Great tutorial! At the final steps where the image sequence of the lightsaber and the footage are connected by a screen node, the lightsaber isnt fully integrated to the final video like in your tutorial. It becomes a bit transparent with the Factor of the screen node at its maximum. The image sequence of the lightsaber has been rendered just like yours.

    Awesome video! Is there any way to make the blade as thin if not thinner than the actual stand in blade? All my blades look fatter than they should lol

    okay so uh, ive encountered a problem, so i render it exactly as you say, and yes it does render, but not at the positions I rotoscoped it too, for example i did a video of a guy swinging a sword, i rotoscoped it, but when it renders its no longer on the sword, its tracking the same animation and the top of the screen. what do i do???

    Tip if you want it to look as good as in the video,
    check the lighting it isnt as low but as powerful which gives the best effect, if the light in your scene is too powerfull then the saber will be difficult to see and will give the effect that the saber kindof dissapears, while if the light is too weak, the saber will just look artificial and png like,
    this also aplie if you have an actual glowing lightsaber and what you are doing is masking the light out of them.

      A way you could do this is probably displacement modifier and animated noise map. I haven't done blender in ages though, so just, give it a shot, but don't be too confident in it.

      @@oxigen1999 I have actually since figured this out. All you have to do is look at your video properties on your actual file of the footage. Then go back to blender and in the render area change the numbers at the top to match your numbers of the footage.

    So I’m using blender 3.4 and when I press ctrl alt 0 the camera doesn’t go to top, I’m kinda new to blender so I don’t really know what to do

    • @lisaborkowski6456
      @lisaborkowski6456 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ctrl alt 0 sets the camera to where you are in the scene. Before you set it try going to top view and then hitting ctrl alt 0 to bring it up. Hope this helps!

    Hey, do u leave the Render on standard or filmic ?

    • @skylinex4719
      @skylinex4719 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      render on filmic, because then the lightsaber glow looks better.
      then, when you re render it after compositing, change it to standard. This way, the glow is already set, and your vidoe footage is not changing color.

    • @skylinex4719

      select the top face, extrude, maybe 3-4 times, and with each extrusion, scale it down a bit until its smooth.
