Star Wars Featurette: The Birth of the Lightsaber

  • Star Wars creator George Lucas, actor Mark Hamill, and sound designer Ben Burtt discuss the concept and creation of the lightsaber.
    George Lucas recalls that Star Wars was influenced by pirate and swashbuckling films of the '40s, which showcased the romantic side of fighting, illustrated in characters like Errol Flynn's Robin Hood. With Jedi, who were heroes in this tradition, the director needed a weapon that would match their ideals. In a clip from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the lightsaber is introduced by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who says it's "not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age." Thus, the lightsaber also became a symbol for more peaceful, honorable times, representing what the galaxy was like before the Empire. Originally, Lucas says, Jedi were meant to fight with just swords. But to give the weapon a technological edge, they became "laser swords," able to deflect incoming fire -- which made sense, character-wise, as Jedi were not meant to be warlike, aggressive fighters.
    The choreography and duels started simple, but became more emotional and complex as the series went on. Mark Hamill states that Lucas originally envisioned lightsaber hilts as being very, very heavy, always requiring two hands. But with a desire to make the sword fighting faster and more intense, they slowly moved away from the two-handed form. The technology used to create the glowing blade of lightsabers also changed as the series progressed.
    In rare behind-the-scenes footage from Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker battles Darth Vader, and Hamill explains that metal poles were required so that the actors could have a realistic battle. Otherwise, one wouldn't know where to stop their hands and finish a strike.
    Ben Burtt says that the lightsaber was the first sound he created for the film. Upon hearing the hum of an old film projector idling, he felt it was the perfect, saying it was "musical, in a way. 'That's probably what a lightsaber would sound like.'" Burtt wanted another element -- the iconic whooshing sound -- which he accidentally created through electronic feedback.
    In discussing the intensity of the lightsaber duels, Lucas says it changed with each film, often times reflecting the emotions of Luke and the ongoing story. Still Luke was not trained as a Jedi in the classic sense. It wasn't until Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace that audiences would see Jedi battling in their prime; the duels were more aggressive and acrobatic than anything seen in the original trilogy, and only grew in scale and intensity as the series continued.

      Behind the scenes footage of Episode IV makes it easy to understand why many of the actors as well as the Fox executives were rather skeptical of the project during its production. It all looks so silly without the layers post production magic added. Supposedly only Alec Guinness thought it would be a success, hence why he took the job despite really disliking the Sci-Fi genre.

      What he created 40 years ago?!?!?!?!?!?!?
      I wish he'd let people watch it again without all of having to jump through hoops to see THAT film! The version that WON the Academy Awards, not the bolloxed versions available after 1997!
      What's available on Blu ray is NOT the original Star Wars... I'm sorry.
      Lucas has become a very cynical old man who spit in the face of the Library of Congress when they asked for an archival print of the ORIGINAL Star Wars.
      He was so stubborn that he would only give them a copy of the 1997 Special Edition.
      Legally, they could NOT accept that film because Film Preservation was VERY specific -- they could only accept an original, unaltered theatrical print (1977) of the film.
      He wouldn't do it.
      What's to respect there?
      After 1989, I don't think LucasFilm HAS made a film that's been particularly good -- ESPECIALLY the Prequels were mediocre.
      That's why more people were happy that Disney took Star Wars off his hands than really upset at the Mouse!

      If he is gonna "do whatever he wants with his movies" then he will also have to accept that millions of fans from the 70s will be annoyed by that.
      To them, Star Wars is the movies that they saw at the theatres back then, not the "Special Editions" or whatever that Lucas shat out several decades later.
      This is like changing the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park into "updated 21st century standard CGI computer graphics" that looks way different than it did in the original movie and then insist that that's the "real, final version".
      Almost every fan of that movie will hate that change.

    • @bamsb90
      @bamsb90 8 ปีที่แล้ว +439

      +TJP77 Actually, Irvin Kershner was the director of Episodes V and VI. Back when George Lucas was enrolled in USC Film School, Kershner happened to be teaching classes. Several years later, after Episode IV turned out to be a success, Lucas decided to take a break from directing and appointed Kershner to fill in. So, I guess we have to give credit to Lucas for starting the Star Wars franchise, but for Episodes V and VI, Irvin Kershner deserves all the praise.

    • @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg
      @Dr.TJ_Eckleburg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +248

      +Jay19Serna Yeah, and it goes beyond that. When you listen to him talk about the original films, it's like he doesn't even understand his own work. He talks about it in the most superficial and matter of fact way that it's impossible to imagine how they came out that good on purpose. And then when you see what he did on the prequels when he had total creative control, it becomes even more baffling. The original films were either a total fluke, or Lucas got exponentially dumber with age.

    • @bamsb90
      @bamsb90 8 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      ***** Huh, you're quite right! Richard Marquand was the director for Episode VI. My apologies for spreading misinformation, I have clearly been uninformed! Regardless, I absolutely agree with you on the different creative engines driving the films. And I must also agree with TJP77 in terms of how Lucas talks about the films. There are fans that dive more into Star Wars than he does; he doesn't seem to share the same enthusiasm about it that others do.

    The whole "heavy" lightsaber premise is contradicted by it's very first appearance, where Obi Wan holds it lightly and Luke takes it one handed and waves it around with no effort.

    • @frankcastle890

      I don't think they mean it's heavy to hold but rather heavy when clashed against each other and the two energy beams collide. Particularly because in most of the books I've read they describe the light saber as dangerously light in weight. So much so that if you weren't trained in its use then you would likely chop one of your own limbs off

    One thing that always nagged me about the Start Wars movies/tv shows that came out after the release of Phantom Menace: in the original trilogy, each lightsaber had its own distinct ignition sound. The snap-hiss of the blue, the cold rasp of the red, the electric zipper of the green. In the prequels, clone wars, and rebels, and in the various video games, the sounds are used interchangeably. I always thought the ignition should be specific to the blade color and the crystal used for it, to give it a sense of personal preference for the weilder

    When you actually take time to think about it, the increased speed of the fight choreography in the prequels makes total sense. At that time, the Jedi were peacekeepers, meaning there were only around 10,000 Jedi to keep peace throughout an entire galaxy. Jedi were trained from infancy in the ways of the force, lightsaber combat, AND how to combine the two to maximize combat efficiency and effectiveness. These people had serious skills. In comparison, Luke had a few days of lightsaber training with Ben and a couple months of force training with Yoda before going into combat, and his opponent was 80% robot. Yoda himself says that Luke is too old to begin Jedi training, probably because he thought it would be usless trying to teach someone so old how to fight like someone who had spent their whole life training. So it makes sense why Luke vs. Vader would be considerably slower (yet no less tense) than a fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin in the prime of their lives.

    • @stoutyyyy

      Yeah, in the prequels, we only ever see what the top echelon of society thinks of the Jedi - the Senate, other rich dignitaries, nobility, royalty, etc. all know that the Jedi are real, as do many of the people that live in the core worlds like Coruscant and Alderaan and even mid-rim worlds like Naboo. The galaxy, however, is far more vast than what we see, and planets like Tatooine are abundant where the Jedi, and to an extent even the Republic, is but a myth or a legend of the far off core/mid-rim territories of the galaxy.

So yeah, do you know what kind of people were in Iraq for example? do you experienced what happened in their daily lives? communication is way easier to be supressed when there are light years separating you from the place you want to know about, way more than an ocean

    But Bob Anderson was a big part of the duels in TESB and ROTJ doubling for David Prowse as Darth Vader in those fight scenes. We see a lot of Anderson as Vader both in the rehearsals and filming, but no mention of him at all.

    It took me soooo long, but I just realized that in Season 7 of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka tells Anakin "Master Kenobi always said there's no such thing as luck."
    And in A New Hope, Obi Wan says "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."
    So my respect for Dave Filoni as a Star Wars fan just went up a thousand times higher. He really reached into the very origins of Star Wars for that line. The man really does truly understand the world George Lucas created as if he were Lucas himself.

    See? They ditched the "It's heavy" idea before the all the original trilogy was even filmed. So stop blaming the prequels on that. And to everyone that says lightsabers aren't swords: They call them swords several times in this video and at least twice in the movies.
    Also, at around 13:35, when Lucas explains why the prequel fights are the way they are, instead of like they were in the originals... You can't deny that was a smart idea, to make it more fast paced.
    Vader was crippled and Luke was barely trained.
    So, yeah. Of course those were slow.
    But the prequels are Jedi in their prime.

They may not be the most elaborate (that prize obviously goes to Anakin vs Obi-Wan in Ep. III) but the intensity and emotion the actors put into those scenes really comes through. Jewel Gal H-how can you say that? I understand the emotional part behind the duel between Ben and Vader, and it does give a lot to think about. But the fight was... nothing compared to Ben vs Maul. Objectively, it isn't. The choreography they used there was just amazing, and no, it didn't have the whole emotional aspect (although you could argue the duel showed something about Ben and his use of the Force), but damn, seperate those two aspects for a bit.

    • @NavidIsANoob

      oh please star wars is far from realistic! sound doesn't travel in space (or any vacuum) but star wars' space ships still still has sounds (when in space)! Some realistic aspects have to be sacrificed, and there is nothing wrong with that if it means the movie will be more enjoyable.
      The lightsaber duels in the PT is one of those things. but tbh I think my favorite duel is the duel between Luke and Vader in Ep.5 (simply cause I love Vader over the other PT villains.) But the best choreography, imo, goes to the duel between Maul and Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan.

    The end of this video with the credits took me by surprise and had me laughing! Star Wars has such a wonderful history and mythos, I'm so grateful to George Lucas to creating and sharing his dream with the world.
