  • Isn't variety the spice of life? Are you like me fascinated by the world's richness, its many cultures and traditions? Well, in this vlog, I visit 'Apitonga' (or 'Api Tonga') in Suva, Fiji. This is a home away from home for the Tongan community in Fiji. Now that I've said all that, watch this vlog and gaze in admiration at the amazing waist ornaments worn by men and women.

    I served my mission in Fiji and I am Tongan from the states. I was there when Ratu Mara passed I remember seeing these Fijians wearing the taovala in Suva and I was wondering why they were wearing taovalas because I had thought only Tongans wore those. It was not until ill I lived in Fiji that I became familiar with the people of Lau. They always loved me and let me in there house because I was Tongan.

      You must have some great memories, Mike. Yes, the ta'ovala is very big in the eastern part of Fiji because of the Tongan influence. I know a Tongan lady in Fiji who makes ta'ovalas. I think I might get her to make me one so that I can wear it next time i visit the Apitonga in Suva.

      You should visit the Tavuni fort in Nasigatoka that has close claims of linkage to Tongan royalty, and lays claim to the name of the province to a Tongan Prince who landed on their shores on a floatation bed of coconuts. He was fair but badly burnt and hoarse from being at sea for so long. They called him 'the hoarse one' - na droga

This one is called Vatutaqiri/Vatuvatuva. It was last explored in the early 2000s. I am hoping to go this weekend but it all depends on the current situation. Tongans have been grazing the shores of Fiji for many,many years before Europeans arrival. I am a direct descendant of Maile Latamai the Tui Pelehake of Tonga who was banished to Fiji due to some disagreement. Male,malie.

    • @ThePaleBlueDot
      @ThePaleBlueDot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% correct. Warfare was raging in the Fiji Islands when WMS missionaries arrived from Tonga in 1835, and it was not until 1849 that they achieved their first conversions of importance: that of the Tui Nayau, paramount chief of the Lau group. When Fijian chief Cakobau of Bau, overlord of the Lau group, learnt of this conversion he threatened war against the Laus. But large numbers of Tongans occupied Lakeba in the Laus, and so Cakobau desisted. Because he did not attack, the Tongan chief Ma'afu - who had come to Fiji in 1847 and who, as of 1853, governed the Tongans there by appointment of his cousin King George Tupou I of Tonga - rose to prominence as Cakobau's chief rival. The Tongan Ma'afu also knew how to use both the Wesleyan mission there and its many Tongan converts, among them mission teachers, to influence and persuade local Fijians to endorse the Tongan cause. Cakobau became embroiled in warfare elsewhere and lost, leading to internal rebellion and insurrection. His chiefdom was on the point of collapse.
