"I was also reading a biography on Franz Kafka. I stopped because it was too depressing, but I got far enough in when he started writing his first novel, America. It’s about this dude who goes to America and Kafka was writing it even though he had never been and would never go to America. That’s what influenced the song “America” - the chorus being both “I’ve never read America” because I hadn’t actually read the book, and “I’ve never been to America”, referencing the content of the book." - Will on America (Never Been)
Will made his stage name because there was already a Will Barnes making music and he wanted to avoid confusion, so he used his mother's maiden name "Toledo." He references this in a song by Nervous Young Men where he says "sometimes I use the name given by my mom."
Believe it or not, Car Seat Headrest actually played a show in my kitchen at my old house in Richmond, VA. This was before Will moved Seattle and reformed the band with new members.
@@KyleReidMu My best friend was the last drummer they had before Will moved to Seattle. I had a big house and it was one of the first stops on their last tour as a VA band.
Some additional lore from someone who's been following Car Seat Headrest since about 2012: - Around the time of the release of Nervous Young Man, Will did an interview with the tiny indie label The Cavalry Press, who give Twin Fantasy its first physical issue on cassette. The interview seems to have vanished from the Internet in the intervening years, but in it Will talked about how "The Gun Song" from that record was intended as a capstone to the Twin Fantasy saga wherein the narrator kills the fictionalised version of their lover/twin and how it was a way for him to move on from the topic emotionally. (One can see this change in perspective realised in how different the tone of the new lyrics on Face to Face are, but I digress.) - A number of the Cate Wurtz songs listed in that total aren't about her directly or their relationship-although "portrait of the artist" and the Twin Fantasy cycle are *definitely* about that relationship-but rather the characters in her works; "The Ghost of Bob Saget" is, rather infamously, a nod to one of the characters in the truly bizarre queer nightmare-comedy Asscastle, while other songs reference smokes., Microwave Planet and I think Extraordinarily High Quality Amazing and COSM. (Will was also the inspiration for two different characters in her work, which he acknowledges in his cover of "Ivy", but that's understandably treading into very personal territory you might not want to get into.) - Speaking of Microwave Planet: Will contributed a song apiece to LAMEZONE 001 and 002. The latter was a cover of "Bury Me With My Money" by Forest World, but the former is a little more interesting: The original version of "Crows" from Nervous Young Man, which in context is very clearly about a specific character in that comic. These were actually the first CSH songs I ever heard, and "Crows" in particular was what got me hooked. - Will is also featured on a couple of Cate's own musical recordings, which are very experimental and strange. I like them. Not much else to say here. - At one point Will and the rest of the touring lineup of CSH at the time served as Jandek's backing band at a live performance. Explaining who Jandek is would take a while, so I'd suggest looking into this yourself (there is at least one good documentary about him), but in a nutshell, he's one of the most highly regarded "outsider musicians" still active and something of an institution in weird music circles. Absolutely baffling crossover. - There is an officially sanctioned remix of "War is Coming (If You Want It)" by the furry happy hardcore producer 4lung, who was (is?) a friend of Will's. 4lung has had an absolutely insane shitstorm of drama around her over the years which I *really* don't want to get into, but the genre crossover is strange enough to be notable. - Although Cate Wurtz is probably the artist most closely associated with CSH's work, Remy Boydell, another highly distinctive furry artist, was responsible for the single covers for "War is Coming (If You Want It)" and the rerecording of "Cute Thing", among others. Their comics are neat, although fair warning that their early stuff, like much of Cate's work, is *a lot.* Trigger warnings abound. - Will has a fursuiting account which he has linked to from his main Twitter several times. He also recently performed in said suit at a show. Seems like it was a lot of fun. Edit: Man, I did not see how old this video is. Ach, well, hopefully some of this is amusing or enlightening in some way regardless.

5 was actually released. He got featured on a blog in 2011, so Will wanted that the first album that people listen from him to be more cohesive. So he merged Sunburned Shirts EP and 5 to make a better album

@@Waltar100 oh my god, if I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT was on the same album as Happy News For Sadness, Something Soon and strangers I would’ve been completely at peace by now
The "writing every song he ever wrote" bit was also a nod to the ending song of Nervous Young Man, Knife in the Coffee, where he says "And I stole every single song that I wrote From my seventeen-year-old ghost". This could be referring to how a lot of his discography is him rerecording older songs, and using song lyrics or songs themselves like Boxing Day, from his younger self
I believe what "Starving While Living" was referring to was the fact that it could be "Starving While Living" or "Living While Starving" due to the album cover suggesting that either is correct and not 'unambiguating' the names.

There are a lot more things that could be added to the Iceberg(mostly the lower end) such as Mr Yay Okay, a pre Nervous Young Men album Will made with other people where he played drums and did vocals. There's also another band even before that that Will started called The 63rd Fret that he made some stuff under the name of
I think the Franz Kafka entry refers to the various references Will has made to Franz Kafka´s books, the most famous one is America (never been) off of how to leave town. The Chorus of the song goes "America (and i´ve never been)", And I think Franz Kafka made a book or something about America without ever having been there, so that song at least is inspired in Kafka
Correction regarding 5. 5 was created close to the same time as My Back and Twin Fantasy. My Back is Killing Me Baby is actually 5 with songs from Sunburned Shirts put on it. The songs taken off of 5 to create My Back ended up on Little Pieces of Paper, namely I CAN TALK WITH MY EYES SHUT, which was supposed to be the penultimate climactic song (similar to Famous Prophets on TF).

I think HTLT master might be referring to the fact that will has stated that he doesn't have the files from HTLT, so he can't re-record it like he did with twin fantasy
Oh that's very interesting and kind of sad.. HTLT is perfect though so I wouldn't want him to re-record it anyway lol
@@KyleReidMu yeah he talked about it in the fantano interview I think. He didn't think there would be a good reason to rerecord because he doesn't regret anything on the album, but a remaster for a vinyl release would be cool
Great video btw 👍👍
@@shimmipenguin1764 Thank you! and I agree, having HTLT on vinyl would be amazing
He also didn’t have the files for twin fantasy
