While working on my CM250c I ended up having to buy two different sets of gauges. Both sets look the same at first glance, but there's a slight difference in the wiring. On the first set the neutral shares the same ground wire with the headlight & turn signals, resulting in the headlight & signal light not working when the bike is in gear. The second set of gauges has separate ground wires for the neutral and the other two lights, allowing the gauges and the bike to work properly. It was surprising as the two gauges look identical, but it turns out they are different models which share the same gauge housing & basic design. On amazon you often see what looks like the exact same product under different names. But in this case, it really pays to review the instruments and wiring in the photos of before you buy. Good thing they're cheap!

I think the gauges blend into the overall look of the bike just fine, without standing out too much. (a good thing IMHO; I prefer an understated style of parts, for the most part) A fine mix of new and old. Many Hero points for going the extra 1.6 km's and not hacking into OEM wiring using all the usual horrifying hipster café barbarisms seen on so many unfortunate steeds, lol :D
The speedometer is really NOT accurate,, when im driving around 50 km/h the gauges gives 120 km/h.. when im driving around 100 km/h the gauge goes all the way down like its says 200 km/h ++.. really annoying :(

Okay. At the 1:49 mark in the video you can briefly see what all 3 ground wires do. They are: #1- gauge illumination ground #2- neutral indicator ground #3- turn signals and high beam ground It sounds like you have #2 and #3 backwards. Swap them and I bet they will work! To find out which one was the ground for which lights, I simply tested the gauges by touching the wires to a battery.

So yes... But no at the same time. You are right that in theory everything could ground through the exact same point. However, two things: 1) I was wiring this to be plug and play with the factory harness 2) sometimes having everything ground to a common point, can mean you end up with electrical weirdness. That's why the electrical engineers design multiple grounds in the the wiring systems of motorcycles and cars.

Do the negative and positive electrode just hook into a 12v source (such as the ignition switch) to turn the tach itself on? Don't want to burn up my tach, thanks!
The yellow signal wire goes to the negative/ground pole of your ignition coil
Are you from Canada?
Maaaaaybe... 😆
Hi, nice job . Was it accurate with the speed , thanks . Gus
i hope there's a low-fuel indicator
Unfortunately there is not. The old Honda CB's don't have a fuel level sender to start with so I didn't need a gauge for that.
Hi! Can I apply this speedometer a scooter (aprilia sr 50)? Thanks!
I can't say for 100% sure. It should, but I'm not familiar with scooters...
Hi there! I was having trouble connecting the ground wire(black) of the speedometer on my cg125 ground wire which is i dont know what wire color of the ground wire , do you mind sharing it to me? Thank you.
Hey! Was the speedo accurate? Just plugged straight into the stock speedo cable and good to go?
Is there any way to configure them to your bike or you just have to hope they're accurate? :)
You have to make sure that the ratio of the speedo is the same as your stock speedometer. 👍
@@Mike_BarkerGreat thanks!
Hey Mike,
I have a motoscope mini and it says to connect the tachometer wire to the negative pole at one ignition coil.
Do you have any advice here? No idea what the negative pole would be. Project bike is a CB500T
Thanks in advance.
Rpm signal wire to ignition coil positive?
Tachometer rpm signal wire to ignition coil signal wire.
Hey Mike, love the vids. I'm doing my own project and live in Dartmouth. Would love to ask you a question or too. You still doing videos?
Hey Stephen. I'm trying to get some videos out. It's tough at the moment. I have 5 or 6 filmed, but a very mobile baby and a new job have kept me busy. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you have. Hit me up through my Instagram if you want. Or my email is in the about section on my TH-cam page.
how are they doing now?
Hi mike, i'm going to mount the same cheap spedo and tacho on a supernew cb500 my 97'. Would you help me to understand the wiring ? Anyway thank you, your video encurages me to make a try !)
How long did they last? I bought the same ones for my cb750.
Thanks mr. Smith I totally agree with you!
The speedometer is really NOT accurate,, when im driving around 50 km/h the gauges gives 120 km/h.. when im driving around 100 km/h the gauge goes all the way down like its says 200 km/h ++.. really annoying :(
Whoa that's a crazy difference!!
Love your videos mike. Are you making any more?
My big question is “is it still working”?
how long they last?
You dont put those schematics in a more comprehensible drawing.. Can you do one.. I want to learn also.. Watching from the phil.
Hi Mike thanks to a very informative video.I got exactly same speedometer and my problem is the two negative cables, can you describe wich cables goes to 1st and 2nd black negative so I can sorted them out, right now my speedometer is allready hooked up and i got some issues as turn signal indicator stops when i put the gear on.I got an 650 Honda cb/Thanks.
Okay. At the 1:49 mark in the video you can briefly see what all 3 ground wires do. They are:
#1- gauge illumination ground
#2- neutral indicator ground
#3- turn signals and high beam ground
It sounds like you have #2 and #3 backwards. Swap them and I bet they will work!
To find out which one was the ground for which lights, I simply tested the gauges by touching the wires to a battery.
Ok thanks,I suspect that cause the error. I will re-do the wiring tomorrow. This is what happend if you don’t think before you enter a project.😃
You probably already know however there are many plugs available for the tach port.
Oh yes... The question becomes... How much do I want to spend...?
YOU'RE THE REAL DEAL COBBER. i like you a lot. I've had a dozen or so Harleys but I started my biker lifestyle with a Yamaha xs650 then a tx650 (they were fucken huge when i was a boy) then a water bottle Suzuki 750 water-cooled thingy then a z900 kwaka9 then onto all my Harleys having the first in the southeast of Western Australia. so now I'm 65ish and rediscovering my childhood now thAT THE RIGHTEOUS BRO STIGMA HAS WORN OFF AND ARE CURRENTLY RESTORING A HONDA four K7 A TX YAMMY AND A Z1 FOR MY RETIREMENT PROJECTS ANYWAY MICK thankyou very much if you can include any of these bikes in ya program. how about different exhaust pipes for my cb750 as i cannot find a set in Australia. cheers buddy. (I WILL GIVE YOU A LARGE BAG OF GOLD IF YOU CAN FIND ME A STANDARD SET OF HONDA CB 750 EXHAUST PIPES)
Hey I like your video but a ground is a ground dude. 4:08- 4:15
So yes... But no at the same time. You are right that in theory everything could ground through the exact same point. However, two things:
1) I was wiring this to be plug and play with the factory harness
2) sometimes having everything ground to a common point, can mean you end up with electrical weirdness. That's why the electrical engineers design multiple grounds in the the wiring systems of motorcycles and cars.
BRILLIANT GOOD JOB 🤗🤗
I have the same speedometer, but he is lying speed, when I go on 100kmh he is on 160kmh and more :)
Moto is Yamaha xj650 seca 1982 year
Looks good!
Whaaat an AE86 trueno😳
It's true!
@@Mike_Barker Wow
Most of the people doesen't know about the car im proud that i watched initial D😅
thanks mike i had install these in mid 18 but my rpm gauge isnt working ohh man these wiring cause me nut

Nice video.....
Man, you look like Eminem. Hahaha. Anyway, thanks for the work through.
