Hey will that switch work for a boat ? The one you put on your motorcycle? My terminals on my battery on my boat don’t screw in though they have a nut that I put on it
Why not use the positive post ? The negative on my bike is not accessible without taking positive cable off and sliding the battery most of the way out.
You can test this with a $20 multimeter. First disconnect your battery (with this, use the switch), then bridge it with the multimeter. Make sure you have the right red port selected for this job. It will tell you how much electricity is going though it - thus how much parasitic draw. Remove fuses affording to where they are in the manual until the car is no longer draining. That is the system that needs work. Do online research how to fix the issue, buy any parts to repair it, and done! You could do a multi hundred dollar job for around $100 including tools! I have to do this for my 92 Cutlass Supreme by Oldsmobile. She's a sweet banged up convertible. Time to change that.
My Silverado has circuits that draw scant current to run some control electronics. There is an obscure instruction in the owners manual for how to stop that. I have had low battery charge when I did not use the truck for a month. I like the disconnect, though.
Father and son builds are always some cool stories! I wouldn’t mind hearing where the idea came from an how the journey has been till now with the build!
Dude, that was exactly the video I needed. I often watch a bunch but this one was explained so well with exactly the part I can get at my local store. I'm ready to install this thing. Yeah!
Thanks, I bought two, as I have two older cars. One summercar and one for winter. One of them has a power leakage somewhere and is fully drained after two weeks. This will make things a lot easier for me. Thanks! And your Toyota is really cool! My oldest one is 1988 Audi 80!
Thank you so much!!! I live in the frozen tundra, aka Colorado, and leave for 3 months in the winter for the beaches, this makes it super easy to not worry about coming home to a dead battery. I watched your video and just installed it all by myself and it works perfectly Thank you!!
Great video and if I may add; If you disconnect the positive first or alone, the danger is that much of the metal around the battery (body, chassis, engine) is grounded and could be touched.
Thanks! We have some kinda vampire-like draw draining our van's battery in between uses. It seems to last a few days and then die. This is going to work until warmer weather when I can troubleshoot the reason for it. I may not even bother if this thing solves the issue. It is our backup vehicle. Yeah electrical drains are a nightmare sometimes. These would help with that for sure, but in more of a temporary "band-aid" kind of capacity! I was surprised to find the little bike battery sized ones too.
Thank you very much I am a traveler last time I had to remove all the stuff from my trunk Mercedes had them in the trunk and small one in the front and everything got wet because of heavy rain, leave car for a year and a half going to South so for that reason I also have decided that I'm going to install the switch next time I hold my stuff will not get wet & mold
Thank you so much for this video. I have one question. I have a 2003 Thunderbird and it is much easier to get to the fully exposed positive terminal. The negative has an overhang above it that makes it hard to get to. Would it be ok to install this switch on the positive terminal? Thanks
The little motorcycle one, can you install it the opposite direction? Where it hangs off the front side of battery if you don't have enough clearance at the top to turn. Thinking about it for a 2011 Polaris Sportsman EFI 800. Maybe this will help my batteries last since I can disconnect without taking the plastics off.🤞
In truck two batteries connected to each others in series, can I install this to the 2nd battery negative which is connected to the truck chassis, to save battery as truck is supposed to parked for months ? Thanks.
How many amps should the switch be rated for? I'm not sure which device I seen on Amazon there are several different ones. I just need something to eliminate battery power when the vehicle is not in use, due to my parasitic draw that kills my battery over a few days of sitting. I prefer the nicer turn knob style switch that I could have in the cab of my vehicle instead of the knife style switch you have used in your video under the hood
Deaar Mike, I knew a battery post Isolator existed but I needed you to help me find it. So, thanks very much and for your delightful Video = most entertaining and a pleasure to watch. Cheers Pete

I have a parasitic drain on my motorcycle that I have searched and searched for but cannot find. That’s my reasoning for wanting to put one of these on my motorcycle
hey, i may need the one for the side post, that or the knife switch i mean if not the one you have here the black one or green one, i need use it for parasitic draw too... in the meantime, due to my situation my guy tried installing the kill switch, but we did it backwards. now my positive terminal has tape and red wire i feel i can take it out/apart as sometimes my buddy hasn't been answering.
@Mike Barker i was thinking like side post batteries. I figured mine out tho. I store my truck and only drive when i need to any.ore cause of gas and my last batt. Completely died.this helped a Ton thanks
It's because of how electricity "flows." You only need to break the circuit in one place to stop the flow of energy. It's safer to break the circuit at the ground. Break it at the positive terminal and you'll get the sparky sparks. Far less risk in breaking the circuit at it's ground.
Very nice but on the car battery you could Put on a Different connector to the Disconnector- instead of using the Original round Battery connector. This way there is a Solid hold ..
I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer and neither of the battery cutoffs work- first I bought the one with the lever handle, it was too big and the negative terminal would not reach, then i bought the one you show with the green knob, but there again the terminals are side mount and they have a bolt that goes through them into the battery. Do you have any other suggestions? I have a parasitic draw that at this point is still unidentified as to the location.
You can buy a a set of side mount adapters. They're kind of like standard battery post that thread into the sidemounts. You can then bolt a cut off onto one side (the negative side!!!). These are an example: www.amazon.ca/Schumacher-BAF-1-Side-Terminal-Charging/dp/B0060YI0S4/ref=asc_df_B0060YI0S4/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=293018977855&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=813322192013775550&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000042&hvtargid=pla-450213759723&psc=1
I have a ae101 corolla ('96) & it now has a parasitic drain lol (was sitting for almost 5 months due to a blown head gasket that was recently replaced) & I make sure none of the electronics are on no matter what but something is draining the battery
I just installed the same (green) one on my Mercedes W124, but I don't really like it. There's a lot of 'tension' on the Negative terminal cable because the cable is pretty short, so I have to almost completely unscrew it (and because of the tension on the cable, screwing it back in is also annoying cause you have to keep the cable nicely in place in order that the screw nicely follows the thread). Think I'm gonna look for a better sollution (like a switch instead of a wheel, so you're sure it's really disconnected, with less hassle).
Great video! I use the same battery disconnect, but my car has some ground wiring connected to the chassis, which is beyond the battery terminal. Even when I disconnect the battery, that wiring still makes contact with the ground. Is this okay, or should I disconnect the ground from the chassis side as well?
I'm no sparky, but I've never understood the "disconnect the negative side" argument. If I'm working on my car and disconnect the NEGATIVE side of the battery, then any hot wire I'm working on can short out to the frame (and has, too many times). Same with a tool that happens to touch an exposed red wire and frame. However, if I disconnect the POSITIVE side of the battery, the only risk of shorting is at the battery terminal itself (easily managed). Am I missing something here?
No they cannot short to the frame if you have the negative terminal disconnected. The frame is only at ground when the negative cable is connected to the battery because then there is a direct connection between minus and frame.
Yes you can. Just make sure the battery terminal is correctly bolted to the battery. The battery tender terminal needs to be on the battery post side of the isolator.
Love the video sir but i would question fitting it on a Corolla? - here in Scotland a thief would not even take a Corolla if he were offered it for free lol
hello please tell me for how long can i have my car without batteries is there a limit ??? if a car dating back to 2010 is left for several months, will I have problems with the brains and the alarm ??? please say thank you
It depends. There are usually batteries built into the ecu to keep stored settings. I don't have experience with every car manufacturer and every model, so I can't accurately answer your question.
So I don't have a car I store, however I do have my bike so I am for sure getting one of these. Also heck yea I would like the hear the story of you and your dad putting together that car!
So if I'm installing a new light bar on a Jeep or something like that and the videos all tell me to disconnect the battery to prevent a short so that mean this will work? I ask because for some videos I see people completely disconnecting the battery and for some I see people only disconnecting the negative. TIA.
Good presentation! Which provokes a thought. I find it yugely amazing a professional talker and 'splainer one might see on a network channel, knocking down 500 Large per year, is no better than you are, and in fact, a lot of 'em aren't nearly as good. You are a perfect example of why ordinary people, with zero training, can shine when the red light goes on. When I think about it, it just boggles my mind.
I had this issue on a c6 corvette, didn't realize it had one of these and it kept getting loose and leaving me stranded when going back to the car after parking up so I just took it off completely and so far it's fine again, not that these don't work but in my situation it caused a lot of stress but only because I didn't know!
I see play at 3:23 I wouldn't recommending using this version of isolator, this has potential to create spark and fire especially if you're using older carburettor car.
The only thing am wondering if a vehicle with all this ECU system, if we disconnect few days and reconnect it will we have to reset or reprogram certain electronic components?
I see some complaints of the green one breaking in half. Have you had any issues with yours? Its hard to tell because more people complain than compliment on reviews.
And if you loosen the screw but then accidentally press on top of it? It reconnects right? Same if you have a heavy cable attached. Kind of unreliable I without say
You can see in your video at @3:25 that yours is also wobbly. When you move the negative cable the green screw is moving. I bet the screw will go in if you loosen the screw and lightly touch on it. So it is possible to accidentally get things connected again. Also with a heavy negative cable, vibrations can dislodge it.
@@Mike_Barker thanks for the responses. Having no problems so far does not exclude possibility of problems. Most likely nothing will happen as long as nobody touches it after the green screw is unscrewed and the vehicle is not subjected to vibration. But... do you get intermittent connection if you loosen the green screw and then wiggle the negative cable like you did in your video when installing? If you get intermittent connection, then there is possibility that it can reconnect even when the screw is loose. Ergo unreliable. When working, you may lean on the negative cable and it may reconnect all of a sudden.
Hi Mike, I’m looking at getting one of these for my Miata but I intend to take the car to occasional track events (I’m building a street car) but I’m wondering how easy it is / is it realistic that the knob would release it self over time due to the car being beaten-on? Or is it really snug once fully seated?
The one on the car has yet to come unthreaded. The bike one has loosened on me once, so I cranked it down extra tight the next time. The bike one has a tiny knob though, so you can't get as much force onto it.
Best anti-theft device on NA Miatas. The battery is in the trunk and there is no trunk latch. Unless they pry open the trunk lid or pick the lock there is no starting it =)
Or you can you my option and I have a parasitic battery draw and can't find it and I get tired of hooking and unhooking the battery. Definitely getting one of these till I find the problem
?? I installed a Kill Switch on my motorhome and disconnect when I park for more than a couple days. To my shock I went to start up and turned ignition before I remembered I had to do the reconnect. But...the engine started anyway. And yes I have the disconnect on the negative terminal.
I have a camper trailer. I have installed battery cutoff switches twice. Both switched were installed on the plastic cover over the battery. Both switches failed because of corrosion. What can I do to prevent this???? Thanks
I have an issue with my 650 gs. When I turn off the key and even remove it The tac and speedo continue to flicker and this over time drains my battery. I have to heep trickle charge on to keep lithium ion fro discharging beyond help. My question is do you think a kill switch at the battery will prevent this flickering bs. I have gone as far as D?C the cables bet it's a real pain with these tiny nuts and bolts thanks for your time
It would definitely help with your situation but I'd want to get to the real route of that problem! These are a good quick fix until you have time to fix your electrical issue.
In theory, if I didn't have a spot to tender a battery, could I install one of these on my motorcycle's lithium battery so that I can bypass the need to keep it plugged in?
I wasn’ really paying attention to the Toyota car but when he turned the car on and the highlight popped out, that made me immediately think about Initial D. Only then I realized that the car was a Trueno.
My car has a 12 volt side post battery and it is very little room to work around the battery because big ass engine and a Cadillac 98 DeVille base model is there any videos showing how you hook this up in a side mount battery like I said I couldn't hook it up with it extending out to the left because my coolant containers right next to the battery and the AC post are tubes are right near that area as well so it either has to be mounted down directly below straight down cuz the only way because indoor facing towards the positive which I don't like is that brings the negative positive too close together so the only solution is straight down let me know I can see a video this being installed that way on side post battery thank you it's been electrifying watching this video.
HELP....I need something like this for my RV....I think. I am towing a car on a car tow dolly on back of RV and I need to have the car in neutral with the steering wheel being able to turn, but with ignition turned to accessory so there will not be a drain on battery. Instructions were to get one of these. YES?....NO? thanks
I installed this on my Subaru Impreza GC8 Rally Car but it wont work! Same in both positions....electricity is working all the time... whats wrong? There is a cable with a fuse to supply the clock, rally-dash and so on...is this the problem? Fuse is from disconnector to the original terminal via cable....

Can you install it on a car tjats is draining the battery over night and used like that every day?
I don't see why you couldn't... But I'd want to get the battery draining issue fixed eventually.
I see play at 3:23 I wouldn't recommending using this version of isolator, this has potential to create spark and fire especially if you're using older carburettor car.
Yes, but that play goes away when you make the connection by turning the green knob on the disconnect.
@@Mike_Barker gotcha!
I have mine on the positive should I have put it on the negative??
Yes. It's sized correctly for the negative terminal.
Cool!! Thanks.. great video...
I'd say you got a poorly manufactured unit and should return it asap!
I have had zero problems since installing mine.
Thanks for your opinion. Like I mentioned I've had no problems like this since I installed it.
Hi Mike,
I’m looking at getting one of these for my Miata but I intend to take the car to occasional track events (I’m building a street car) but I’m wondering how easy it is / is it realistic that the knob would release it self over time due to the car being beaten-on? Or is it really snug once fully seated?
The one on the car has yet to come unthreaded. The bike one has loosened on me once, so I cranked it down extra tight the next time. The bike one has a tiny knob though, so you can't get as much force onto it.
Best anti-theft device on NA Miatas. The battery is in the trunk and there is no trunk latch. Unless they pry open the trunk lid or pick the lock there is no starting it =)
I want one on my 48v 1000w ebike but only ever seen comments claiming its a bad idea for ebike. What's your thouhts on that?
Or you can you my option and I have a parasitic battery draw and can't find it and I get tired of hooking and unhooking the battery. Definitely getting one of these till I find the problem
did it work . Have the same problem on 85 corvette
@@jarvismoore2019 yes it worked great. Now just need to find the problem then I won't have to use it any more
?? I installed a Kill Switch on my motorhome and disconnect when I park for more than a couple days. To my shock I went to start up and turned ignition before I remembered I had to do the reconnect. But...the engine started anyway. And yes I have the disconnect on the negative terminal.
Hmmmm... I wonder it it's a faulty unit with a short inside
Will check it out. Thank you.
Does the radio etc lost its settings if just loosened?
What do I do if I have that EBS thing on there?
If I disconnect it and the negative cable , do I have to reset all the settings?
Thanks.
Fantastic tutorial 🎉
I have a camper trailer. I have installed battery cutoff switches twice. Both switched were installed on the plastic cover over the battery. Both switches failed because of corrosion. What can I do to prevent this???? Thanks
Hey thanks for the info!! Can I install this on my boat battery? Is it water proof?? Corrosion free?? Salt water boat. Thanks!
I wouldn't say it's corrosion proof, but battery terminal corrosion is easy to clean off.
Does this work for parasitic power draw?
I want to do this with my rv but it has two batteries, so I need two or just one and witch negative post would I put it on?
They make switches specifically for what you're looking for just type in battery disconnect on any auto wesbite 🤠

In theory, if I didn't have a spot to tender a battery, could I install one of these on my motorcycle's lithium battery so that I can bypass the need to keep it plugged in?
To have it acy as a simple disconnect? Of course.
@@Mike_Barker Appreciate the quick reply Mike! Picked one up using your affiliate link.
Hi Mike,
Do they do one to suit 10-12mm Top Post Cone terminal?
I wasn’ really paying attention to the Toyota car but when he turned the car on and the highlight popped out, that made me immediately think about Initial D. Only then I realized that the car was a Trueno.
Thank you. Do you know hwo I can buy this conector in Miami?, I live in Costa Rica and speak spanish, what is the exactly name of the product?
If your car gas 2 batteries, do you need 2 battery isolators?
Whats the name of that switch? And what store specifically? Autzone?
I bought mine from Amazon. I'm sure AutoZone can get them too. You can check out the details in the links in the description of the video above. 😀
Hey Mike great video man now I know for sure how they work oh oh by the way are you related to Bob Barker LOL
What if you have a different kind of connection on your battery
What kind of connection?
How many Amp's can this Disconnect handle ?
Really good one. Thanks bud👍❣️
Awesome video thanks so much!!!
Easy enough. Nice demonstration.
Great video 😄 one thing, someone on amazon said green is for the positive black is for the negative which is it 😩 lol
You should always put the disconnect on the negative terminal regardless of the colour.
Please make a video how to let car alarm and remote key still in working condition despite engaging the battery diconnector for other functions.
I'm not really sure how to do that. It would involve a little more work than simply installing this cheap part.
@@Mike_BarkerJust thinking it will be helpful if they still work for antitheft purposes
Thanks for the tip. I have an old Lexus that has an issue with battery drain. I’ve had to resort to disconnecting my battery every night. It sucks. I’d like a way to be able to disconnect and connect the battery from a switch inside the vehicle. Anyone know of a way to achieve this simply and without spending a lot of money? Thanks.
Hola buen video.
