    Interesting video! I enjoyed it!
BUT I have a thing or two to tell my dear fellow commenters.
As a Bulgarian person, I am annoyed by all the comments that claim that we are strictly Bulgars, Thracians, Slavs, Iranians, Turkish people, or some other people. We have a complex history. We are a mix of peoples. Bulgaria literally means "to mix; to stir; mixed tribes". It's true Bulgarian culture and people have ancestry from basically everywhere. It's true, we have cultural elements from Bulgars, Slavs, Thracians, Celts, Romans, Goths, Ottomans, Varangians, etc. This diversity makes our culture interesting and cool.
BUT don't forget each individual person is, well, a person. They have their own ancestry, origin, beliefs... Even if they're from the same country.
Maybe Bulgarian culture reminds you of your own. Great! It's possible that the two cultures influenced each other, or it's a coincidence. But please don't claim Bulgarians/Bulgarian culture originated from your land/country. It's almost dehumanizing to claim we are some cute tribe that exists only because of your people. Or that our culture is basically a copy of yours. It isn't. Culture is really fucking complex. Also, remember that pretty much every culture overlaps because our ancestors all came from the same continent (Africa).
The ones I see claiming that we're a strict descendant of some people are pretty much all nationalists. Or are jealous of our culture and want to claim we are a copy of their ancestors. I see Turkish people claiming we are all just Turkish despite Turks being a minority. I've seen some Middle Easterners say we're descendants of Ancient Iranians and that's why 'our cultures have similar things' despite there being virtually no proof. I've also seen some people calling us descendants of the Bulgars despite we having only 2% ancestry from them. Do NOT get confused. Bulgars and Bulgarians are two VERY different things.
Here's a short version of Bulgarian history. If you don't want to read my 'amazing' rundown of the history of Bulgaria, then fucking skip to the end of the history.
The Bulgars immigrated to the Pontic-Caspian steppe from Central Asia and created a country called ''Old Great Bulgaria". It only existed for like 30 years and before Khan Kubrat died, he had a speech to his sons about how if you try to break a bunch of sticks together, they won't break but if you try to break them one by one, you'll succeed. By that, he meant they should stay together and protect the country (which was being attacked) by working together instead of running away one by one and being killed. His sons agreed, but once he died, they said a massive "Fuck you" to their dead dad and went to different territories. Well, two stayed. Bayan and Kotrag (Kotrag didn't necessarily rule but he supported his bro) ruled the country but they (along with OGB) surrendered by the Khazars. Kotrag later moved up to modern-day Russia and founded Volga Bulgaria. Asparuh. Do I even need to talk about him? He moved to the Danube and created the First Bulgarian Empire. I'm not gonna write about the other sons cause I'm lazy and they're not that important (sorry!).
So, Khan Asparuh and 30,000-50,000 Bulgars came here and made our country but then mixed in with the local Thracian and Slavic tribes (we call them 'the Seven Slavic tribes') and created the First Bulgarian Empire. The two main religions were Slavic paganism and Tengrism. Then they became Christianized because there was a religious divide and pagan nations weren't trusted in Europe. They still kept some of their pagan traditions though and so did the Thracians (an example of a tradition of theirs is Kukeri). Then things got fucked, we were under Byzantine control for while, then we became independent, we split the countries and were ruled and slaughtered for 485 years by the Ottomans. We got independence on 3 March 1878. We didn't join Yugoslavia or the USSR, but we were a Communist country for a bit, then we stopped being communist and that was it.
TL;DR (you're reading this instead of the rundown, aren't you, you lazy fucker? I'm just kidding, do whatever the fuck you want ig): 1. Bulgars, Slavs, Thracians, 2. Religious divide, 3. Christianization, 4. Byzantine rule, 5. Kingdoms were split, 6. Ottomans, 7. Communism, 8. Modern country.
ANYWAY, to end this, don't assume stuff about our ancestry or culture. We are not Scythians, Central Asians, Dacians, etc. We are mixed people; Bulgarians, and that is more than satisfactory.
i should stop writing these youtube essays but i really enjoy it lol

Bulgars Ancient Turkic people originating in the region n and e of the Black sea.In c.ad 650 they split into two groups. The w group moved to Bulgaria, where they became assimilated into the Slavic population and adopted Christianity. The other group moved to the Volga region and set up a Bulgar state, eventually converting to Islam. The Volga Bulgars were conquered by the Kievan Rus in the 10th century.

Ibn Fadlan served as the group's religious advisor, a crucial role: among the purposes of their mission was to explain Islamic Law to the recently converted Bulgar peoples, a Turkish tribe living on the eastern bank of the Volga River. (These were the Volga Bulgars; another group of Bulgars had moved westward in the sixth century, invading the country that today bears their name, and became Christians.)

In European scholarship the question has frequently been posed as to whether the most likely ancestors of the Gagauz were Turkic-speaking Proto-Bulgars who, in the 670s, came to the Balkans from the banks of the Volga under the banner of the Bulgar king, Asparukh.

I see that a lot of Pan-Turkic dreamers are talking about MY Bulgarian history, so I will say it for the last time:
The Turkic theory was officially thrown out of history since periods of 1989 - 2011. We all know it was mostly political theory anyway :) After the fall of the communism in 1989 the question of the origin of the Proto-Bulgarians was opened again and the Turkic theory of the origin of Proto-Bulgarians was put aside as one of the other theories.. In 2011 it was officially thrown away of the historical diaspora. Also there were several genetical researches from 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018 that completely debunked the "mistery" and proven that the Proto-Bulgarians were 100% WESTeurasian people as the ones that live in Eastern Europe for thousands of years. :)
" It should be noted, however, that a well-known study worked with mtDNA from the remains of people considered undoubtedly "proto-Bulgarians" - Mitochondrial DNA Suggests a Western Eurasian Origin for Ancient (Proto-) Bulgarians. The results are that 13 individuals belong to to 10 mtDNA haplogroups: H, H1, H5, H13, HV1, J, J1, T, T2 and U3.
They are all found among individuals living in southeastern Europe several millennia ago, published by Mathieson et al. Therefore, 100% of the surveyed 13 "proto-Bulgarians" have a maternal origin similar to those who lived in our lands thousands of years ago. "
    docplayer.net/54435970-Mitochondrial-dna-suggests-a-western-eurasian-origin-for-ancient-proto-bulgarians.html
"We mentioned years ago that our studies show that we are not Turkic in origin, we are not close to Turks and Altai."
    - "It is clearly seen that the Thracians have no affinity with the Turkic-Altai populations,
and the Tatars have no genetic affinity with both modern Bulgarians and Proto-Bulgarians ..."
    - "The genetic distance between modern Turks and Bulgarians also raises a lot of interesting questions. It seems that the Ottoman
yoke in Bulgaria did not have a genetic effect, because even if there was some mixing, the Turks may have taken the genetic
material from here but did not leave their own. "

In his research of the Volga Bulgar-Khazar connections, Mardzani repeatedly states that these two nations were, in fact, one nation from an ethnic point of view. With reference to Arab writers, he also
maintains that the language of the Khazars and that of the Volga Bulgars were very similar, if not one language:
From various accounts of the Muslim scholars of history and from the knowledge derived from their numerous books, it follows that in ancient times the Khazars and the Bulgars were two names of one nation which inhabited that country [the Khazar Empire]. In later times, when that great independent state broke into two, the southern part of it was called Khazaria, whereas the northern part became famous under the name of Bulgaria.
If this statement of Mardzani is to a large extent correct, which we will try to investigate further in the next section the language spoken by Ibn Fadlan in Bulgaria was essentially the Khazar language. Being of Turkic origin, this tongue, as well as its northern Volga Bulgar dialect was, in comparison with the Turkic dialects of the steppe nomad Turks, already influenced by the terminology of urban life enjoyed in 922 by both the Khazars and the Volga Bulgars. It meant that the basic culture of the Khazars and the Volga Bulgars was very similar, and that Baghdad's plan to enforce the pro-Muslim element in the Judaic Khazar oligarchy by converting the whole of Volga Bulgaria into Islam was even better thought of than was discussed before. Moreover, as we will see, this plan actually paid off when, upon the eventual fall of the Khazars, the Volga Bulgaria started to play a major economic and cultural role in the area.
It is important that both Ibn Rusta and al-Ma'sudi were contemporaries of Ibn Fadlan. Whenever their accounts of the region might have been compiled, that is, slightly before or almost immediately after the sojourn of the Caliph's delegation, it is clear that Islam was already if not fully established, than very much present on the lower reaches of the Volga. The question for the delegation thus was rather of increasing the political importance of Islam in the area than of its actual introduction to the Volga Bulgars. From this point of view, it is apparent why Mardzani and other scholars speak of the introduction of Islam to the Volga Bulgars as early as at the end of 8th century.

During the early Middle Ages, pre-Christian Bulgaria (680-864/5) was one of the most important powers of Southeastern Europe. Historians have commonly explained its survival and success in terms of a par- ticular ethnic symbiosis between Slavic commoners and Bulgar elites of Turkic origin, who ultimately gave their name to the Slavic-speaking Bulgarians. Bulgar khans, archons, or kings' ruled over territories that are now within Bulgaria and Romania. In Romanian historiography, which has traditionally viewed Romanians as a Romance-language island in a Slavic and Hungarian sea, the Bulgars play no serious role in national history. Archaeological assemblages that can be dated between the late seventh and the late ninth century are consistently attributed to "proto-Romanians." By contrast, the Bulgars are the quintessential part of Bulgarian national identity, a marker of distinction from all other histories of Slavic-speaking nations. As a consequence, studying the Bulgar (or, as it is commonly known in Bulgaria, "proto-Bulgarian") archaeology was an essential component of Bulgarian nationalism, especially in the interwar decades, as well as recently. It is only in the years after the Soviet occupation of 1944 that the emphasis in Bulgarian archaeology was forcefully shifted to the study of the Slavs."

Turkish hatred from bulgars is actually nonsensical. After a long occupation bulgarians still protect their culture, religion and language. Even catholics wouldn't give this chance. Bulgarians also have steppe origins and Tengriist before.

    • @erdem6393

@BNL Selam! Turkic means ethnically turk. Todays kazakhs, uzbeks uyghurs etc is turkic. Turkish is many anatolian ethnicities and some turkic nomads came anatolia after battle of manzikert who are culturally turks. I know bulgars are bulgars but obviously have some steppe origins. Tengriism is not an expansionist religion and it began in altai mountains. And only spread with lineage. Thats why i told bulgars have steppe origins.

The Proto-Bulgarians had a somewhat eventful history prior to their arrival on the Balkan Peninsula. The earliest written sources indicate that they inhabited the region to the north of the Caucasus in the 4th century A.D. and had close contact with the Georgians and Armenians. They belonged to the Turkic ethno-linguistic group and their language resembled that of the Huns, Khazars, Avars and other tribes.

In the past many historians had not dig into these historical problems and just copied some claims of few western historians. Bulgars are not Turkic and one solid theory is that our ancestors came from Balhara (central Asia). Please do not shit on our heritage because people judge the book by its cover and when people like you spread shit over it. Many people without any knowledge stay neutral infront of our great history.

Turkic and Jewish genealogical myths recorded by King Joseph and Sefer Yosippon identified Khazar as the "brother" of other Turkic tribes like the Bulgars and Sabirs (see below). Syriac legends said that the ancestor of the Khazars was named "Khazarig," the brother of "Bulgarios." Most scholars believe that these legends have a historical basis and that the Khazars were indeed closely related to Turkic tribes such as the Bulgars and Bashkirs.

It more or less is accurate, but with several important corrections:
    1. During the Khan period, Bulgaria's battle flag was horse's tail. No crosses up until 865 at least.
    2. Bulgaria was never a vassal state of Serbia, as shown during Ivan Alexander's reign.
    3. Prince Alexander I was deposed in 1886. Prince Ferdinand I ruled after him and became tzar in 1908.
    4. Bulgaria was a Soviet country and a Soviet satellite, but it was never under USSR rule neither de jure nor de facto.
    5. While the President is the head of state, the true power is held by the Prime minister, who leads the government.
P.S. Other minor references to flags and coat of arms might be slightly off, but overally, good job on the video!

The author has shortly surveyed the history of the widening of the term "Bulgar-Turkic phonological criteria". The last summary of the results of research on the Bulgar-Turkic criteria and their chronological validity was made by Lajos Ligeti in his monograph on Turkic-Hungarian linguistic interrelations (1986). In the paper the author has presented several recent Middle Bulgar-Turkic loans of the Volga Kipchak dialects, following Ligeti's criteria: (1) the prothetic y-; (2) the initial š < si/sï; (3) Ancient Turkic -n ∼ Chuvash -m.

After separating Oğurs from them, it would be seen how Armenian sources on the Bulgars tell the truth. Viendur Bulgar (see the footnote 3) of Khorenats' and Olkhontor Bulgar (Blkar) of the Armenian Geography (Sirak Asharhac'oyc". Geography, p. 99) were certainly the Balanjar Bulgars. Al-Mas üdi, 10 century Muslim historian, confirms those Ar- menian sources by saying "Bulgars are from Turks... from the nomads called Valandariyyah" (Sesen, Islam Coğrafyacıları, p. 57). The expres sion of the Latin script associating Bulgars with Chechens (see the foot- note 2) also point to the same place. These people left their country to what is today Tataristan, not likely due to the Arabic incursions onto the Khazars in the late 7" - carly 8" centuries, but the Khazar incursions onto them (Great Bulgaria) just before the Arabo-Islamic raids.

I've researched the reign of Ivan Alexander and he wasn't a vassal of Serbia at any point in time as it was presented in this video and in some faulty maps. Bulgaria was a completely independent state in this period.
As a side note, Serbia's war of conquests against Byzantium in the same period weakened the latter, contributing to the Ottoman conquest of Byzantium and the whole Balkans, including Serbia itself. Not a lot to brag about there.

Stop stop stop stop stop STOP!!!! Tarnovo wasn’t the last to fall, it was Mesemvria, which lasted almost as long as Constantinople did. Also, they called themselves Bulgarian even then, and Bulgaria is one of the only countries, which has never changed it’s name.
