Fantastic video. Everything I needed to repair my fridge. Mine also had a dead capacitor that the parts shop insisted couldn't be also dead, turns out the it was and got everything from the local shop for $50. Installed in 10 mins. Much better than blowing $2000 on a new fridge!

My fridge quit working 3 years ago (was 14 years old at this point) and the repairman installed one of these. It worked for 3 years. When it quit I bought a new fridge as I thought the compressor was shot at this point. Did replace a capacitor in a dehumidifier this past year and got it working again.
@@JonnyDIY I advertised it in FB marketplace for free and a guy drove 45 miles to come and get it. He backed his pickup to it and just flipped it on it's side and I asked him whether he gave a sh....t about it and asked him what he was going to do and he said he'd have a repairman look at it and if it can't be fixed part it out. I gave him the owner's manual and he threw it in the back in the bed with the fridge (didn't even bother to put it in the cab with him on the seat). He didn't care about the shelving in the fridge etc. It was sad how he treated it.

If I know the company that made this 3 in 1 relay overload capacitor I will suggest that they make it as a plug and play so the issue of splicing wires will be eliminated, things work better.
Great detailed video explaining everything you need to know. Can you use this as a permanent solution. Some video says its only a temporary fix the check out your compressor.
Thank you for the tutorial. Very easy to follow. Unfortunately I have ordered three times now From Amazon and I keep getting the same part without the capacitors leads. The picture on your link is also missing the leads. I went through some other suppliers that show the plastic leads in photo but still end up without. Very frustrating.
I finally received the right one. It is still not working unfortunately. Your video shows changing the relay. Could the black capacitor connector be bad as well?
This worked brilliantly...for 2 months. I can still hear the motor/fan running. Should I try another or does this have it's own meaning of what I should do next? Thanks for advice!!
I've heard from others that theirs have failed early before. I'd try another one, may have just been a faulty unit. I wish they built things to last, but seems they just build em to have a low price nowadays
Some say that hard start kits can be detrimental to refrigerators because the forcefulness of the start can cause compressor parts to deteriorate faster. The large capacitance boost from the kit can also lead to compressor failure if the refrigerator runs for a long time without the motor-run capacitor. The high-boost over-capacitance starts can also repeatedly hammer the motor.
THANK YOU for clarifying that.... That Cap is a start cap not a run/filter cap? He pulled the relay and starter cap, replaced with relay, starter cap and overload.... Right?
Question: my compressor says 1 Ph ( I think it means que 1 horse power). Where I can find one for 1 horse power? 🥺 It was making click sound intervals and not cooling enough but today it was completely dead. All my stuff was room temperature.
Thanks for the video. Quick question... I see you connected the 3in1 to the OEM capacitor. Other videos show the 3in1 directly connecting the 3 wires to the compressor and the 2 black to power. There is no mention of using the OEM capacitor. Is this typical to utilizing the OEM capacitor? I thought the 3in1 includes a built in cap to avoid using the OEM one. Thanks.
I believe it is optional to use the original capacitor. On the one I used it had those 2 extra connectors and said to put the old one in line if you had one 👍
Thank you, this video was very helpful and fixed my compressor problem ! .. for about a weeks time. I bought a 2nd capacitor, but now the compressor only clicks once when initially plugged in and no sort of effort to turn on. I used a volt meter to test the compressor and it seems to be reading fine. Any other suggestions?
Update: I just restripped and capped the power wires once again and now it DOES turn the compressor on for about 5 seconds then putts out again. Retries each minute then turns off again. 🤔
Put an amp clamp on a wire going to the compressor and check the lra or locked rotor amps rating. Compressor might be locked up and the start relay tries to start the compressor but cant due to it being locked/siezed.
Are these kits a "Hard Start Assist" ?... Thinking of installing one to my fridge so my generator will start it. The constant rated watts of the generator would run the fridge but the start up kills it,... Would this kit help ?

Just had a quick question. For my power my fridge has 2 white wires and 1 blue wire. How do I go about connecting those to the 2 black wires on the start relay?
i just watched your video and we bought the relay switch/the exact part # that was originally on our Kenmore frig but i am confused why everyone i see uses the start relay 3 in 1. is that better then using the actual parts it comes with? please help me understand.
The 3 in 1 is just more of a universal part, it's more readily available. I couldnt source the original part in the time frame I needed so I went this route. I have replaced the original start relay part before once, both worked just the same 👍
Do all refrigerators have overload relays? I have an LG 2020 model that only seems to have a wire harness (without overload cylinder shaped part) from PCB to the compressor. Fridge shows error 22 and PCB red light blinks thrice despite installing new PCB Thanks.
I installed a 3 in on a under counter summit refrigerator today. It worked smoothly. Temp went down nice . However it's not cycling, compressor runs continuously for 40 minutes. So I unplugged. No what about the other wires that go to EVAP fan and thermostat?. I reconnect them the same as before. Plan on cleaning the condenser tomorrow.
Mine came like that where you could add in the Capacitor in line if you have one. If you dont have connectors you can still add it in with connectors from capacitor and wire nuts
Great video! I have a spare fridge in the basement that went bad a few months ago. I baught the 3 in1 and it didnt work. I thought I'd give it another crack at fixing it. I noticed the one you have on the video has a connection port for the capacitor. Do I need to get that specific one? The one you have linked doesnt seem to have it. Thanks in advance!
No need to get a new one of you're handy with wire cutters and connectors. You can just splice it in line. If not can order another with the connectors. I've seen some online with them. No guarantee its not the compressor that went out though. Can check that with a multimeter though. Search "test refrigerator compressor" 👍
Sorry not sure about that, I just use the factory capacitor if it has one, but others have said you don't even need to since the new 3 n 1 has a capacitor built in
Just looked on and completely amazed me that a part...much cheaper than the original is better made yet extreamely durable and much more affordable than the original part that came with the fridge. The starter relay is way over priced via parts cataloge but the universal relay.. I mean costs...👍👍👍 way cheaper just a minor mod with wires and placement of unit but does alot more and saves your fridge...Compressor from future failure. Awsome video guy, and Thank you for helping us all from throwinf away a practically new fridge and saving it & saving $,$$$.$$ !
It's possible, it could really be a lot of things. Even dirty dusty coils can cause it to short cycle. Could also be something on the main control board, like a capacitor
@@JonnyDIY I replaced overload and relay so circuit board possible which is over 200 bucks. I'll buy a new fridge before I replace the board. Thanks for your input.
@@JonnyDIY I made a mistake, it's not HP but labeled as 1PH(single phase). There's no specific HP label, but what I computed from rated voltage and current was the fridge was rated 0.23 hp, so in this case should I purchase RC0810 (1/12-1/5) or RC0410(1/4-1/3)?

👉‼️ Jonny👈‼️ Hi. Nice vid. I have a sort of a (mini big) Refrig . It cools …. sort of … use to freeze things, it worked so well. Now have to put drinks in the freezer to get the right cold, I use to get in the Refrig. IF a Refrig still cools somewhat and fans work. Could the issue still be the relay ? I want this to be the issue so badly, as I think after watching ur vid and many others on changing out this part …. I cod do it myself. But I don’t get if a Refrig still has SOME cooling power how replacing the the relay cod make it cool more. Would you mind giving me your advice and or suggestions because this would b most appreciated❓🙏
@@JonnyDIY So appreciate 🙏 ur reply. So many vids I wave watched (wine cooler / refrig not cooling enuff? Etc etc … ) they change out the relay and POW‼️ 🥊👊‼️it works/cools! Realized the coils were covered in dust. Cleaned. Took back off (fans do work) Drats if it’s not the relay It’s probably gonna be to expensive for me UNLESS it’s not difficult to switch out the compressor. But then it cod be that other part that has the coolant (or whatever one calls it for a refrig. Any MORE OR OTHER advice Would be appreciated ‼️🙏‼️ If not asking to much

@@JonnyDIY HI ‼️ I don’t know a lot about refrigerators or mechanics. But I can learn/ attempt to learn and do mechanical stuff, if it’s not too difficult. However, my limited understanding of the Uline brand is their cooling system, is enclosed. One can’t just add coolant to it, like one can with a car. I don’t know all the right words & I’m replying from my phone. when I get back home I’ll look up the proper words/parts. Drats, i so wanted it to be the relay. Is a compressor difficult for a lay person to replace? What about my issue makes u pretty certain in ur experience Not the replay? Ur prob correct yet curious. And thank you Jonnie 🙏
Hello first off thank you for the very concise description of the problem, no other video has done that. I had the exact same condition, the fridge would try to start every 3 minutes and it would run for 8 or 9 seconds before it clicked again and went off. I had a repair person come in and change the starter to a universal one ( he said that is the problem and that the Kitchen Aid starter could not be found). That started the fridge up. It cooled at the beginning for about 2 hours, but then it stopped. It would run for long time, which we should have known is not a great sign. The repair man came back and said that the compressor motor has seized and won't run. Could this be because the compressor was running hot? also could you tell me if this is something that the repair person should have known to begin with? or was there no way for him to know that the compressor had an issue. I ended up paying for the service call and the labor for replacing the starter.
I have a mini fridge that stopped working so i obught a hard start ,,put wires on as directions say but when i plugeed it in unit sparked a little and quit,,,question is there are two black wires coming out of hardstart,,power cord from fridge has 3 wires,,a white ,,red and a green one,,,does it matter which black wire goes where,,,HELPO
If I want to remove the compressor for scrap can I just cut the copper with a plier or will it explode? Or do I need a to make a small hole to release pressure 1st ?
Hi Johnny i bought the 3 in 1 starter kit. Do you still need to connect to old run capacitor to it? My fridge had one but my 3 in 1 relay didnt have the extra clips for it. I just didnt use them and when i connected it my compressor turned on but its been two hours and its not getting cold. Its been off for 2 days btw.
Hmm if compressor kicked on should be getting cold if that was only problem but yes you need to connect the capacitor. Just splice in the capacitor to the 2 wires. Hopefully that does the trick
The photo on the amazon link in the description doesn't show the plugs on that connect to the capacitor. Does it come with the plugs and just doesn't show it in the photo?
So did replace the relay with another same model one and it got blow ( did it twice by the way) , but after i watched your video i order the 3-1 start kit i just installed it mow i hear the compressor keep clicking trying to work every 1 min but it wont , what you think the issue is , is it bad compressor or should i try different starter kit ?
Hey Jonny, just saw your video and trying to put one on my haier deep freezer. It's the two black wires I'm have trouble with. Tour original relay wires are red and black. I have different colors, what color do I hook them too I have green, blue, green and white wires?
Connect wires to compressor as I did. Then Im thinking one of your 3 wires is a ground wire. Then white wire should match up with new relay. And blue wire is probably the power or same as red wire was on mine. If 1 or your 3 wires is a grounding wire you will know because it will run to a point and will be bolted or screwed down
Hi Johnny, will this lower the start up watts of the fridge? i.e. if you are running house with a generator during a power outage the fridge draws about 1800 watts to start up ...but only 200-400 watts once running...I am trying to lower the amp usage on any appliance I can so I can run more lights/appliances without overloading the generator....thanks
No I dont think itll change the startup draw at all. If any probably nominal amount. Sorry, but best bet is to just get either a separate generator for the fridge or a larger one for everything. Try looking 2nd hand on craigslist and apps like offerup and letgo
A larger capacitor deliveres a larger initial jolt of electricity, requiring less of an instant load on your electrical system. Other than that, there's no difference.
So i understand that the 2 black(power supply) wires get hooked up to the wire harness that i pulled out from my bad relay. Correct? But you only show 2 wires, 1 white and 1 red! But I have 4.... 2 red 2 white. Do I hook up all of them so each wire nut holds 3 wires?
@@scottsingletary7642 you can try running it without your capacitor in line and see if works or simply cut the wires and use some wire nuts and connectors to run the capacitor in line
You can pigtail a couple short wires into the wire nuts and connect those 2 to the capacitor via a couple crimp on female connectors. You dont need to buy a separate part. Do that and see if it works, hopefully thatll do the trick. If not will have to start troubleshooting.
Mine has 4 connectors to the relay and then my red wire to the overload protector which in this case would be my common. What do I do with the rest of the wires ?
Just install this on a chest freezer. Started up and seems to be getting cold. Only issue is the side of the freezer is getting hot. Much hotter than my other chest freezer at home. Is this normal or should I keep my eye on it? Don't want it to catch on fire...
will the fridge or deep freezer in my case still kick on and off with the thermostat like its supposed to, and how do I know witch (3 n 1) to install for my chest deep freezer.. thanks in advance for any info.
my compressor is GE Part number AP4368059.. the HP rating is not on the compressor and GE web site says they do not put HP or BTU ratings on the compressors and if I needed a new compressor I can order one.. is there anyway to get the HP info I need ? the model number is FCM7DUCWW
So we're trying to follow the video and links - the link for the start up kit, does not look like the part you're using. We see that the red & white wires has two ends on your video, one pair that goes to the capacitor and the other pair plus the black wire that goes to the compressor. Can you post the link to the part that you actually used on this video?
It's the same one just a different maker, they're universal. I bought mine locally from appliance parts dealer. The one I linked will work and install just like this one.
@@JonnyDIY Yes we just installed the one we got from the appliance parts dealer and so far it's running. Hopefully in 4-12 hrs it'll start freezing! It's a chest freezer btw! Thanks for the great DIY video, very easy to follow.
Hey Jonny - I have a Samsung fridge and I'm trying to install the 3n1 (I have all the prongs properly connected) but there are three cables going into my original relay, and I'm not sure how to connect it to the 3n1. The wires are black, purple, and blue if that helps. Thanks so much for your video!
The 3n 1 is not recomended or does not work on all models, for example on Inverted compressors does not work; always ask your part supplier more than likely they will tell you and advice.
Don't connect a 3n1 to your fridge! Many if not most modern Fridges of the last 10 years or so use variable speed inverter compressors and you can destroy your compressor by attempting to run it with a 3n1. Johnny DIY has done a great disservice by not mentioning this. Furthermore, if you do have a single speed compressor fridge, it's always best to go with the manufacturer's relay and only use a 3n1 temporarily until you get the actual replacement . Relays have different amp ratings and the possibility of shortening the life span of your compressor exists.
For me this doesn't fix it, but I can run the compressor only by directly connecting the relay to AC, hot wire to one of the black and white neutral to the other black, but I can't just connect the fridges red and white, that doesn't fire up the compressor, so I either have a bad motherboard or temperature sensor or could that start capacitor in the middle have gone bad?
So I watch one video showing the 3 pin triangle on the compressor.....they connect white to the lower left pin, red to the lower right pin, and black to the top pin. You connect all of them to different pins. Wonder who is right ?
@@JonnyDIY Well, I watched several more. All went with the black on the pin at the top of the triangle, white on the lower left, red on the lower right (although one or two did have an inverted triangle, but the pattern simply flipped over in that case)......so I connected mine that way just now, and it's running/getting cold.
Ran for about a day then keeps tripping breaker. Prior to adding 3n1 i has to replace defrost thermostat and went ahead and replace defrost timer. Heater was okay. Fridge would not start, starter relay was burnt out. installed 3n1 , unti ran great for a day but now keeps tripping breaker. Any advice???
Why does my fridge have 2 sets of 2 wires. Red and blue like you spliced at the end. And Yellow with black stripe and blue wire with rounded female terminals?? Doesn't seem to plug into anything at all???
hello Jonny, I have a question for you. When choosing 3n1, which hp do I go with? i noticed there were several of them with different HP. There is no indication of HP on compressor . It is a 24 yr old kenmore chest freezer and I can not seem to find oem relay. Thank you in advance
The one I have linked in description should work fine. You can always use the amps to give you an idea if it falls in parameter of part, but the one I linked will work for standard size fridges and freezers
Thanks. I did install one and compressor seemed to be little too hot. So ordered one that is for 1/12 - 1/5 hp and it will get here on Tuesday. I also ordered ohmmeter. Could you teach me how to check the amp? And figure out its hp? Thank you in advance.
@@JonnyDIY First of all, thank you for the quick reply to my last query! So the refrigerator you're installing this in has a "run" capacitor, correct? Mine is a GE and the capacitor your hooking up to is mounted separately from the compressor unit in my fridge, but close by.
@@OriginalAstroTard you're welcome, yes I believe so. From what I've learned is some people have hooked these up with success without putting the capacitor in line, but I figured I'd use it. Never had an issue with it since installing that way either
@@JonnyDIY Looked up the part number you provided and that's it. Should be here today. Appreciate your fast replies and taking time to produce them. Also, you don't take an hour to yammer on about everything under the sun, just short and simple...thanks!
Jonny, any idea if the 3 in 1 will last longer than just replacing the relay overload and capacitor? Also, any video on how to remove the 3 in 1 and reinstall the relay overload and capacitor back to original just incase? I was told that the 3 in 1 should be a temporary fix not permanent. Whats your thoughts?
How do you size the proper 3 in 1? My compressor is 17.6LRA, but all the 3 in 1 are rated in HP. Screw it, there's only one locally and since it uses my capacitor I'm grabbing it.
@@JonnyDIY Couldn't find one local, It was just as easy to get exact replacement, but I think my compressor is mechanically stuck. Everything tests on spec, but all I get is a click. My condenser fan got stuck the other day and let the compressor overheat. I'm heating the whole unit with heat gun and I'll try bumping with 220v later, but it's not looking good. Funny I had just been on the lookout for crapped out fridges to swipe a compressor for vacuum pump or maybe a silent air compressor mod. I wonder how many I'll have to try to get one with a good compressor?
@@JonnyDIY The funny part? It's not mine, I rent, but my buddy is my landlord, I was just trying to be a bro. We built this place, so I just fix shit if I can. We're calling in backup before we give up. It was 8 or 9 years old, but $2500 new, so I don't think he'd want me bringing in some white Kenmore I found on the side of the road🤣. It was nice having all new stuff moving in here, but it breaks even quicker than the old stuff I've typically had and all around the same time. But my ($5)Electrolux canister just keeps marching on through the decades(4 so far), they must be kicking themselves for selling all the replacement parts.

I've never had any issues but I'm not an expert

Hmm not too sure. Maybe the start relay was undersized? Sounds like it would be the start relay if no other problems before

If I want to remove the compressor for scrap can I just cut the copper with a plier or will it explode? Or do I need a to make a small hole to release pressure 1st ?
You should have the refrigerant collected and not vent to atmosphere, but if you're going to, make small hose in copper line

I have green, blue, green and white wires?
Did you find a way to reduce the start up draw of your fridge compressor? I’m trying to achieve the same thing.
The bottom terminal on the compressor is not the ground; it is the Run winding
So i understand that the 2 black(power supply) wires get hooked up to the wire harness that i pulled out from my bad relay. Correct? But you only show 2 wires, 1 white and 1 red! But I have 4.... 2 red 2 white. Do I hook up all of them so each wire nut holds 3 wires?

Jonny, I bought a Supco 3-1 part. I connected it but it didn't work. My question is this...should I buy a 3-1 with connectors for capacitor?
You can pigtail a couple short wires into the wire nuts and connect those 2 to the capacitor via a couple crimp on female connectors. You dont need to buy a separate part. Do that and see if it works, hopefully thatll do the trick. If not will have to start troubleshooting.

Hey Jonny - I have a Samsung fridge and I'm trying to install the 3n1 (I have all the prongs properly connected) but there are three cables going into my original relay, and I'm not sure how to connect it to the 3n1. The wires are black, purple, and blue if that helps. Thanks so much for your video!
sorry hard not being able to see it. Try a Google search on your fridge model to find wiring diagram
May have worked the same on both. All I know is that the fridge I fixed is still working perfectly fine today.
Just locked at my video. The orientation of my compressor wiring pins was just opposite or upside down of the other one you watched

Yeah you should be ok. They're pretty universal
@@BigFarm_ah365 youd be surprised how many working fridges you can get for free or under $100
@@JonnyDIY The funny part?
@@BigFarm_ah365 ohh nice, yeah sounds like its worth trying to fix for sure. Yeah they're just not building them to last but maybe 10 years these days
Thank
You're welcome 👍
