    My fridge stopped working a few days ago. The fan was going, but the compressor did not kick in. I pulled out the start relay and it looked burnt out. I picked up this part at my local Grainger store for about $14. It took me just a few minutes to install, now we're chillin'.

    I had quite an experience when our refrigerator quit a month after the warranty was up. Called a repairman and he came and replaced a board in the fridge. That was $300. Worked for a few days and quit again. He came again and told us the compressor was bad, offered to take it away for us and sell us a new fridge or pay $800 to have the compressor fixed. Told him...NO, and put it on the deck. Did some reading. It was recommended I let the compressor cool down and then plug it in, if it started up it is the capacitor. I found a hard start kit and put it on and it has been running ever since (Over 6 years now). This repair scam man was just trying to steal our property so he could do the quick repair and resell it in his shop. We only paid $800 for it to begin with as it was a scratch and dent model. So the short of it is this, the original capacitors are just big enough to start a new compressor, when it get a bit harder to start, they aren't big enough anymore and you need a bigger one. Everything we buy is designed to fail after a certain amount of time. Glad these hard start kits are available.

      the start capacitor is matched to the start winding specs.... bigger is NOT better ! You dont want to cook the winding insulation until it shorts out.
      What does fail in fridges is the cheap PTC STARTER (rarely the cap itself).
      The best long term way to start any electric motor is with a "soft-starter" not a "hard-starter" that's used when a tired old compressor is nearly ceased and can hardly start. It should just help save all the food before replacement.
      "hard-starters" should not be used on a 4 year fridge with a dead PTC: buy matched oem part then!
      The many types of starters:
      Current relay: good
      Voltage relay: better
      PTC heated resistor: cheapest
      Electronic voltage controlled: best

    Great Video. I have a whirlpool ED5VHEXVB01 fridge that I replaced the start relay on 3 times already. The first one was replaced back in Nov 2022 and was melted at the top of the start relay, so I replaced it again and it only lasted 2 days then failed again, that was the aftermarket one it is now July 2023. So I decided to go with the genuine oem whirlpool part and it lasted 2.5 days. So today I purchased a new fridge. I would like to keep this fridge as a back up if i can but it is killing the start relay. The capacitor tested good on my fluke 12uF. Any ideas.

    Apparently the 3 pins in a triangle coming out of the compressor case is fairly standard, though the pattern may vary with 2 pins on the bottom, 1 on top, OR 2 pins on top, 1 on the bottom (like the one in the video). The single pin is the common (the black wire of the 3n1), the white wire goes on the right hand pin if the pattern is like the video (picture a DOWN arrow head), the red on the left pin.
    That reverses if the triangle is upside down (picture an UP arrow head).....black on top, white on the left bottom pin, red on the right bottom pin.

    Draw an equlaterial triangle, from left name A,B and C. Between each points put a coil symbol to represent windings. Now, set ur multimeter to ohms. Check value from A to C. Write down C equal?. Then from A to B and B to C. The highest reading is ur run . The lowest is ur common. Ur start is obvious. The two lower values should total to the highest.ususlly A start,B common and C run. A+b=C.

    Hi again, I talked to Supco and was told that connecting properly is vital. 10ohms between start and run, 6 ohms between common and start and 4 ohms between common and run. The repair tech installed a RCO810 rated up to 1/5hp but should have installed the RCO410. Which 3N1 did you use? HOPING that the correct part will fix it and that the compressor isn't toast 🤞

      this cheap "hard-starter" is a standard bush fix.
      The best part match is the one listed by the fridge OEM or Embraco.
      Why? ... because its got better coil/capacitor match and over current protection.
      Newer replacement parts use a smart PTC based on a power triac to 100% disconnect the Start winding unlike legacy PTC that kept heating the PTC Non-stop.

      @dimat3164 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These kits should be chosen per the compressor power rating. In your case the compressor is 187W which is 1/4W and RC0410 is the right one to use. But it will not always be the case as many smaller fridges will be below that rating and RC0810 will be the correct one to use in those cases.

    One other comment. There are several postings that say take out the old relay and shake it; if it rattles the relay is bad. If it does not rattle the compressor is bad. That is not always true, at least it was not in my case. I took out the old relay and shook and i did not hear a thing so I assumed my compressor had gone bad. I then went to Lowes and almost bought a new refrigerator but could not get a fast date of delivery. I then came back and said what do I have to loose so I gave it shot by reversing the red and white wires, saved me two thousand dollars for a new fridge I did not need, at least not yet. Not a bad deal for fifteen dollars I had to spend on the 3 in 1 relay

      ETPC EPIC TIME PASS CHANNEL Hi, does this 3 in 1 work on all fridge models or do I have to buy a specific one for my Amana fridge.
      One other thing. I replaced the old capacitor and start relay which by the way didn't make a rattling noise. The weird thing is, the new part does rattle :/
      After watching a lot of videos on possible troubleshootings, I determined that there's nothing wrong with any part (compressor, capacitor and relay, thermostat, cleaning the coils, etc). I'm learning so I don't know if I'm testing for troubleshooting correctly :/ Any suggestions? Thanks :)

  • @aftabdima

    A note on the three prongs. The black goes in the middle, that is simple. The other two 'start' and 'run' can be confusing. My first attempt did not work and the compressor got burning hot, so i unplugged the fridge and let the compressor cool down. After it had cooled down I took the red and white wire prongs off and reversed them (put white where it was red before and vice versa) and it worked for me. The compressor kicked in. So it is a matter of page orientation when you read the diagram.

    Received a reply from Supco: I wrote something like this: "I purchased the part yesterday and in the diagram on the package the black wire which is actually at the device's edge, ie it is the outer wire, is mistakenly shown to be the middle of the three wires, and I am not sure whether to trust the location of the black wire (which according to the diagram would make it NOT the ground) or its color (which would signify it as being the ground).
    Mike from Supco wrote back: "The wire color should match the terminals for common, start, and run, not the location." I hope this helps some people feel more confident in their choice of which wire to connect where. BTW, I looked at some other videos and I could see that one has a Supco device with the CORRECT order of the wiring...so you may be lucky...

    Fantastic video, ignore all those nasty comments.
    I'm a total novice, so it is very useful to see what was difficult for you, it is easier to learn from that than from a video by an expert who does everything quickly, skipping steps, and who has no idea what will be difficult or confusing to me.
    Also, I just bought the same part from Supco yesterday and started searching for install videos which is why I found yours. Indeed as you pointed out the diagram on the package has the colors wrong compared to the actual part in the package, so it is not at all clear which wire goes where, ie whether to trust the placement of the three wires relative to each other or to trust their colors on the diagram, as indeed you explain twice in the video, and as can be seen from the colors of the wires on the part at the beginning of the video.
    It was very reassuring to know that you had the same issue and overcame it.
    Ignore people who comment negatively without knowing what you encountered. But you are so kind and self-effacing in your responses, that is quite wonderful! Kudos!!!
    One thing I can perhaps contribute regarding the issue of correctly identifying which is the ground prong as opposed to the other two prongs. Since the configurtion can be upside down it might be confusing, but there are two prongs are on the same level whether the two are on top or on bottom, so instead of looking for top or bottom, look for the two prongs on the same level, and the other one (not on the same level as them) is the ground.
    Thanks again!
    If you make more videos, make sure to do it as you did this one - include the mistakes and explain what you learned, so we can also learn from your mistakes - no "perfect videos" please!

    Hi, my overload has 3 wires running to it and also the black wire that runs to the starter relay. (total, 4 wires) It has 2 red wires tied together and a black wire, fan wire, running to 1 connector. Like I said, the other black wire that runs to the starting relay top (middle)....So, that leaves me with 3 wires to hook to just the 2 black wires of the 3 in 1 .Am I suppose to uses the 2 red wires and hook them both to 1 of the Black wires of the 3 in 1 and then hook the fan wire to the last black wire of the 3 in 1? I haven't seen a video as of yet where there are 2 red wires and a black wire that are being hooked to the 3 in 1. Do you have an idea as what I should do? Tie both reds to 1 wire of the 3 in 1 and the other black to the 3 in 1 ? Seems since these 3 wires on the over load are hooked together they should stay hooked together but that leaves me a problem of no other wire is left to hook to the last 3 in 1 black wire.Thanks for anyone's help...

    Thanks for your great video! The repair tech, for a charge of $180, connected the red run wire to start, the white start wire to common and the black common wire to run. It didn't work till, the next morning, I changed them to follow the wiring diagram. Then the compressor came on quietly and became warm, the copper tubing became cool but 12 hours later, the fridge is still not cool let alone cold 😒 The tech said he puts them in any configuration, that it doesn't matter. Is that possible??

    Hey all, for those who are trying to figure out where to plug the white, red and black wires from the supco to the compressor:
    1) watch this video: th-cam.com/video/o3f04wHgpb8/w-d-xo.html
    2) get a multimeter or ohm meter, watch youtube video on how to use one to check for resistance accross two pins. th-cam.com/video/lo8MWr3NuuM/w-d-xo.html
    3) match the pins with the wires as they are labeled on the supco package, ignore the positions of the labels and only use the pin labels and wire color labels.
    I have a EGX 70HLC compressor, used the supco RC0410 because the horesepower is 1/4 hp.

    After installing the 3 in 1 start relay, how long before the compressor kicks on? I installed the supco 3 in 1 RCO410 and all that happened after installing it was the fan came on and that's all. The compressor got super hot! So hot you couldn't touch it longer than 1 second. Is that normal? Or is that the giveaway that the compressor is shot?

    • @ElAlma83

      Had to unplug it, you know the sound a pot filled with water makes when the lid is on and the water is boiling? Yes, it started to sound like that! I wasn't sure if it was going to blow lol so I unplugged it, and there was a smell too not sure how to explain it, definitely a chemical smell.

    • @ElAlma83
      @ElAlma83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the original relay was off, I followed the instructions down to the t when I installed the 3 in 1. Well 24hrs later and the compressor was slightly warm to the touch, everything was work except the compressor. I think it's time to go shopping for a new one. Sad, very nice full size stainless steel fridge going to the curb come Sunday night.

    • @ETPCYT
      @ETPCYT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All right, With mine, it was doing the exact same thing. It was trying to start then it cannot so the original relay on there clicks it off. My compressor was super hot as well. I unplugged it for a bit while I was installing the 3n1. Mine kicked in right after I installed it. Yours is doing what mine was before I removed the the old relay and put this one on. If it is TOO hot and smelling, not a good sign I would think. ( I am not a professional) I would let it cool down, recheck to make sure everything is hooded up correctly then plug it back in.. if that doesn't do it, yeah your compressor is probably shot... I hope this help, my friend.

  • @gregrobsn

    The reason the compressor was hot was because the starting capacitor was bad so the start winding could not develope the phase shift needed to spin the motor in the right direction. The rotor just sits there and vibrates while the run coil overheats.

    Don't leave the 3-N-1 on the compressor if the refrigerator is equipped with a board. You can use the 3-N-1 temporarily but replace the original relay (you can use an aftermarket brand to save money) as soon as possible because it can possibly damage the board. 3-N-1 is only good for hard starting compressors where the original relay will not start the compressor. If a hard start is needed because the new relay fails to start the unit, then it indicates a compressor problem because it needs more current to start and the compressor will have a higher amperage draw when its running. A 3-N-1 is just putting a "Band-Aid" on the unit.

    • @ETPCYT
      @ETPCYT  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Psycho, Thank you for the advice/ tip. I was unable to find any relay replacement for my refrigerator. My "Band-Aid" has been running my refrigerator just fine for the last 8 months. I figure when it dies I will have to get a new one.. but until it does, I will leave it on.

    • @Psycho9263
      @Psycho9263 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The embraco compressor uses a solid state relay. It has a built in overload and a plug-in capacitor. You can buy a replacement relay designed for your compressor from any appliance parts supply house (many sell to the general public) they can sell for $40-$55 if you buy OEM. An aftermarket is the same exact relay but much cheaper. When the hot air from the condenser at the back of the fridge restricts the hot air from the condenser fan, the compressor will develop high head pressure causing the compressor to work harder and draw more amperage and get very hot. The compressor should draw between 1.2 to 1.5 amps when working properly and the hot air can be drawn out. While you have the 3-N-1 on the compressor, take your Ammeter and clip it on the common wire and check the amperage. Bear in mind when using a 3-N-1 a compressor can last 5 seconds or 8 years. A 3-n-1 will not increase the efficiency of the compressor. I only use them temporarily until I can get the proper relay. Keep the refrigerator about 5-6 inches away from the wall. Tip: Keep your condenser clean.

      It certainly helped me and the diagram they provide is not very helpful in regards to the 2 black wires esp if you aren’t an hvac person.

    You are making a video to show the viewers how to fix a fridge. This is a terrible how-to video. You don't work on figuring it out on the video, you figure it out first then show the public how it's done. You made an 18 minute video that should have been 3 minutes.

      I appreciate the advice.. I try to show troubles that I encounter so that if others have the same issue they can see how I worked through it

    If you don't know what you're doing you really shouldn't be making how to videos...just saying

      your configuration of the wires is upside down. rotate the picture so the pins match.... red and white should be reversed

    Hi, if the 3N1 was connected wrong, could it or the compressor be damaged?

      .. I am not an expert but I assume that is a possibility as with any appliance that is wired in correctly.
