Thanks for watching Teaching Puppy to Come. Have you worked on your pup's recall yet? If so, what games have you played from the course?

I came up with my own game. It's called "The Attack of the Giant Fur Ball" I run away from him and he comes chasing me. It's actually really fun and gives
      your dog some exercise.

Years ago we had a yellow lab (probably 6months old at the time). We lived by a very busy road and a visiting child let her out of the yard. She started running towards the road and sure death! I was chasing her and yelling for her to come back! All of a sudden I got the idea to make a loud silly noise to get her attention, then turned around and started running the opposite direction. Thankfully she turned around just before reaching the road and started chasing me!!

Whew! So glad you were able to avoid what would have been a heartbreaking and tragic event.

I use "with me" as the recall phrase. Works really well (so far)

People really need to understand that off-leash IS NOT THE SAME to a dog as on-leash. Both must be taught. Them knowing something on-leash is only a START for them understanding it fully off-leash. Something you forgot in the video but I think is a really important point to cover is that if you scold or punish them AFTER they finally comply and either come or let you come to them, that is what you are punishing, not the running away.

We agree that those skills have to be advanced very slowly! And we didn't mention scolding or punishing because we don't want our viewers to do that. Negative interactions are not how a dog learns best. If the dog isn't able to do the skill, then it's up to the human to adjust the training methods for better comprehension.

I only had one bad experience; I was trying to play and run with my dog. My dog was not yet trained to run beside me... so he just went in front of me. I fell to the ground at top speed and the leash got out of my hand. I saw him with the corner of my eye that he got spooked by my fall and was running towards the street. I was so overwhelmed with fear for his life that I burst into tears. He heard me and immediately came back to check on me. We were lucky...

My 4 month old toy poodle refuse to walk on a leash and bites at it. What do I need to do?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog

Hi Tiffany! It’s very common for puppies to bite on a leash when they are first getting used to it. To the puppy, it’s just another possible chew toy. It could also be frustrating as it’s restricting movement and/or creating pressure. As part of leash skills training you teach your pup how to behave while on a leash. Take a look at our blog for all the great info on leash skills.

I just got a 8 week old puppy and he keeps peeing and pooping in the crate when I am gone at school. Is there any way to lower the chance of making him making a mess?

Take him outside as much as possible when you are home. Watch him all the time when you are home and the SECOND he goes in the house pick him up and put outside on grass. Also do not let him eat and drink freely. We feed our boy 5am and 5pm. And can pretty much now know when he will go. He’s learning the door means potty. Repeating things over and over and over is the only way.

Here is the New Puppy Starter Kit which has a potty training lesson and bell training lesson included! There’s a free video lesson and a sample puppy schedule, as well as a potty training troubleshooting document that is 10 pages! It can guide you through any issues you are having and the most common reasons for them.

As mentioned in the video, if your pup is not responding to your cue to come, it is likely that the environment she is in is too distracting for her. Hope this helps!
