What does The Edge ACTUALLY play on With Our Without You? -- U2 Guitar Lesson!

  • U2's With Or Without You is a powerful song that doesn't rely on any legendary musical parts to be legendary. Today I'm going to show you how The Edge wisely and humbly contributed his guitar parts and gave this song enough room to be a great song.

Hi Ryan nice tutorial, can I just add a couple of things, Edges' signature delay is dotted 8th and then he uses either a 16th an 8th or a 1/4 note, I like your ending, but to be true to Edge he plays D - Dsus2 - D - Dsus4 .........I love the term whooshie swooshies 😅🤣😂

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, and The Edge embodies that like no other guitar player.
A new pet cat... What an adorable story to share - thank you 😊 We have a similar story, only our cat is a she and she showed up about 3,5 years ago at the age of about 8 months. Our daughter decided to call her Klara.
Thanks for yet another insightful lesson by one of my all time favorite bands (at least their "old" stuff until Pop)!

I could've sworn that I watched The Edge play the outro part in first position, augmenting and noodling on a D chord 🤔

If you want to teach, then I suggest after the lesson you give, then play the song within all its forms

  • @CathyHolton-jh1xv

It’s the basic idea and rather true to the original recording. On live versions, his parts are a little more involved, including chiming an octave higher on the first two strings after the middle 8. When the song is at peak intensity, he chimes those strings and gets a piercing sound that’s balanced out by the vocals. He also plays the repeated 2-3 notes during the choruses on strings 3 and 1, skipping the B string. Sometimes I don’t know the logic behind his decisions, but he tends to do everything differently than how I’m inclined to. And then again, he’s also a famous, multi-millionaire guitar player and I’m not. So, these aren’t hard and fast rules.

What I’ve taken from this is that this confirms that The Edge is the most overrated guitarist of the 80’s and 90’s.

The Edge can play trickier stuff. He chooses not to. His genius is in being able to imagine new sounds and use his effects to create that sound. If it was easy more people would do it.

@@touringbandwell said. I think the Edge is a punk rocker in some ways. He really simplified composition and used the essential elements to make a great song. He was a master at harmonizing but not over complicating it. He made it look very easy but he is actually a phenomenal player. Watch him cover some Who songs. Or listen to In a Little While. Just very good feel and dynamics. He is awesome.

Excellent but have seen The Edge demonstrate the outro all on D low position sus (and that it was Bono who came up with the outro).
