Alcohol sales were prohibited on Sundays in my state of Minnesota until only a few years ago. This was really unusual because Minnesota is one of the more liberal and progressive states in the country. We also, however, had a VERY high number of Norwegian and Swedish immigrants coming in the early 1900s (my great-granparents among them). I'm beginning to wonder if our immigrants may have contributed to keeping that law in place for as long as it was.
We have the same laws here in Minnesota. Only alcohol under 3,2% can be sold in grocery stores. Otherwise, there's an off-sale monopoly and you have to go to the municipal liquor store (called the "Muni"). Now I'm wondering if we just copied the laws from you folks.
I think it's a really neat idea. Not only does it keep prices lower, since it's government owned (and the gov. ain't trying to strike a profit from alcohol sales from its own people), but it also helps make sure alcohol is not being sold to minors. And even though yes, you can drink at a pub, in that environment you are necessarily surrounded by the "wider society", which means you'll hardly drink more than you can handle and be left alone in a ditch. It also helps with quality control, collecting data and having it all in one place. Having to find a Systembolaget next to you can be a hassle, but it's even worse having to go from small store to small store to small store to find what you are looking for. Lastly, having to plan your alcohol consumption for the weekend sounds like a nice benefit. You can't go on a drunken binge. Wanna throw a party? Ask each person to contribute. Alcohol is over too early? Too bad, but less bad than having too much alcohol on a Sunday evening.
This could have been written by a Swede (that is pro-Systembolaget) or someone working for Systembolaget. All the things you mention is exactly the reasons why Systembolaget exists and why some Swedes like Systembolaget :)
There is a neat solution if you live in Helsingborg (Sweden): just go on a ferry to Helsingor (Denmark, it is 4km across the sea). Danes do not care about alcohol laws :D Whole trip is about 10 minutes, and it goes every 30 minutes. Also, you can just ride the ferry all day long and drink there (there are bars and a Duty free shop). All for the price of 69SEK. I laughed my ass off first time I discovered this fact
It is pronounced like that unless the sk is followed by e, i, y, ä, ö or j. Compare skara, skotte, skuta and skåning on one side and skena, skina, skjuta, skära, skön and skytt.
Very interesting video. (And it was great to have it all in Svenska). I'll have to ask my sister and brother-n-law what they think of Systembolaget! - I'm curious now. lol
Yes! Ask! We are also curious what they think about Systembolaget. Glad you liked the video. More videos all in svenska is coming :) Thanks for your comment!
Controlling peoples' intake isn't teaching people how to be responsible around alcohol. I've been living in Sweden for 5 years now and when I see my Swedish friends going out it's mostly the ALL OR NOTHING attitude. And that often results in surprises... it's like people drink alcohol here as an excuse to act out and let out their other personality traits....
For real. This is so true. It just makes no sense to restrict it because us Swedes will bunker up either way with lots of booze instead of buying often. And yeah when we go out and drink things can get crazy
Varsågod 🤩 💜 Glad you liked it! If you want to learn more Swedish with us then we also have Swedish courses. Live-Zoom courses: elansutbildning.com/ Pre-recorded courses: funswedish.teachable.com/courses/
Question: how can you measure your own knowledge? How do you know how much you know about a certain subject like a foreign language for example? You can take language proficiency tests but you need to pay for them, and they are usually offered only a few times a year. There may be free tests, quizzes, exams on the internet, but the quality of these tests may be suspicious. Even if you could get high scores on these tests, that may mean very little. I have been studying Swedish for the past 3 years every day for an hour, mostly by translating song lyrics. I keep track of the number of songs I can translate in one hour. Right now on average I can translate 8 songs per hour. Even though I am mostly reviewing songs that I had translated before, there are always words that I don't remember or I am not sure and I want to check in the dictionary. My goal is to become faster and faster to a point that I can read entire texts without consulting the dictionary. But there should be a better way to test or measure my own knowledge. I am against using ANKI or flashcards to learn a language. But at the same time, tests like flashcards seem to be the only way to measure your knowledge of a certain subject. For example, many youtubers claim to be fluent in a foreign language. But they may offer no concrete or objective evidence or proof of that claim They may say a few sentences in the foreign language, but that doesn't mean they are fluent, it just means that they memorized those few sentences. How can you objectively and precisely measure someone's knowledge without using tests, quizzes or exams? Is that even possible?
I think their Swedish courses have quizzes but if you don’t wanna spend money then I really don’t know now. Just use Duolingo to practice. It helps too. Or find a Swedish learning app.
Nice! My country of origin needs this system yesterday... I know that Finns in Helsinki like to go to Estonia because alcohol is cheaper and less restricted there. Are Swedes in Malmö tempted to do the same in Denmark?
What is your country of origin? Yes, exactly! That is exactly what Swedes in Malmö do. A lot of visit to Denmark, especially for special events like birthdays and weddings.
thanks FunSwedish!! i have learned so much with your videos here in very short time. Can you honestly tell what would be the reason for me to buy your courses, if im getting so much for free anyway?
Two reasons. 1. You will learn EVEN more Swedish. Get exercises to practise etc.We explain everything in more detail and you will have more hours of valuable content. 2. Support us so we can make more youtube content for you. Our courses are our income. Without it we would have a harder time making free content since we need money to eat and support our families. So thanks to all our followers who buy the courses we can continue making free content on TH-cam. Otherwise we would need to close the channel and find a normal job to survive.
Tack så mycket! Kul att det hjälpte. Anmäl dig till våra svenskkurser :) Där kommer våra lärare hjälpa dig inför ditt prov. elansutbildning.com/courses/
Hi im new to svenska like really new and I have had a pretty easy time reading and writing (to the point I could actually write almost this entire comment in svenska) but I have a pretty hard time listening to it, should I just keep on listening to music and podcasts and pick it up subconsciously or should I take a different approach?
Great question! Apart from listening to music and podcasts. A lot of our students say our pronunciation course helped them understand spoken Swedish better. In this course you will learn, among many things, to identify what is typical for spoken Swedish (that we say "nåt" instead of "något" for example). So you are able to hear this and understand better when a Swede speaks to you. Det bästa om Systemet är: om man försöker avsluta dricka alkohol ser man inte alkohol överallt varje gång när man handlar mat. Bra jobbat, svenska folket!

Big fan - a) it penalises the ill-prepared and disorganised and rewards discipline and preparedness which I think is laudable. b) - the centralised online database and ordering/reserving service is a hugely useful tool and when we come over I always ensure I pre-order what I want and need and have it delivered to where we're staying - even from here in the UK.

This is so interesting! Especially since so many Swedes migrated to Minnesota. Maybe that is why. Thanks for sharing!

I think Systembolaget is good except for the opening hours.
It exists. But it has decreased in recent years due to smuggled alcohol. And people who bought the alcohol abroad, e.g. Germany.

The Swedish urge to shorten every word into a two-syllable -is word :)
Depending on where in Sweden you are it's shortened differently. In Stockholm they usually say 'Systemet', but in western Sweden we say 'Bolaget'.
