Hank, I'm the Catholic priest you interview in 22:30. People from Denver to Romania have told me about seeing me on this, so I see it's getting the rounds. Most importantly, I remember meeting you on the Camino and I remember all your passion for this ancient pilgrimage that has moved us both. You did a great job on the video, from what I've seen of it so far. Congrats on all the many views. Hope to meet you again somewhere in the world. Buen Camino, amigo!

Hi, Dave! Great to hear from you! Yes, this Camino video has been seen by more people than I ever could have imagined. I had no idea. I remember meeting you too, and I really appreciate that you agreed to be interviewed for the video! Hopefully, we'll meet again, and I hope you've gotten a chance to take more young people on the Camino! It's a wonderful experience.

I hope Amalie sees this too; sometimes we go trough our whole life without finding the treasure the two of you found on the Camino. It was meant to be that you two meet there.
That was so pure and genuine and beautiful; I honestly have no words. It doesn’t matter where the two of you are and how far you are from each other, the two of you belong together. Don’t waste this opportunity to share your happy self with somebody as special as Amalie. 🙏😍

Hello Hank...as I have an acquaintance, right now, ON the camino, I must say in 35 min, I felt as though I'd walked the Camino with you. Brilliant film, worthy of an Oscar for Short Film or Documentary (in my humble opinion). Thank you for not only a fantastic film and your narration, but for your foot suffering (trust me, I felt it vicariously as well). At the end of the video some were crying but all of us were speech less waiting for something that never came, something like “... and they live happily ever after...”. One of us said “I wish I could find my Amelia in the Camino, I won’t let her go”. Congratulations.

    Fantastic travelogue and video, Hank.
I will repeat almost every other viewer's remark: Your video is the best of the lot. So excellent, in fact, I can only wonder on which side of the bed those 58 thumbs downers awakened when they cast their votes. You capture rather deftly the stray moments of external anguish (blisters! tendinitis!), sure, but also the enduring internal joy experienced by all the pilgrims and of course by you. Difficult to notice the many but ephemeral woes when surrounded by such beauty as abounds on the Camino. That beauty, I think, has us all looking up and out, not down and in.
You also are a generous filmmaker, allowing your new friends their own moment(s) to shine brightly. And none more so than Amalie. Her purity of spirit you mention comes through loud and clear repeatedly but especially when eating the donut (a GREAT sound effect you added, that choir of angels!), drinking the beer, missing the chocolate factory in Astorga, and climbing the pillar of rocks at Cruz de Ferro. THAT moment, when you segue from video to a still shot of Amalie looking up at the Iron Cross, is hauntingly beautiful, really REALLY well done. You should be proud of yourself. Gosh, not to seem weird but for the many many moments of beauty and grace Amalie adds to (my enjoyment of) your video, I am happy to buy her a lifetime Netflix subscription. :-) In fact, I want to pay YOU for the video you have obviously crafted with attention and love. Alas, I see no way to accomplish either objective. What, no tip jar?
Anyway, your cinematography, editing, music, and monologue - with your fellow pilgrims and with us - have inspired this old fellow to break out his Merrells and do the Camino one more time. Thank you. Buen Camino -- on the Way and in Life!
PS. You and I have swapped homes. I now am in Edmonds. (Thank you for the recommendation of Aqua Verde Cafe! :-) When I lived in LA and trained for my Camino, I would hike from Will Rogers, up and over the Backbone to Trippet Ranch, and then down Santa Ynez Canyon or Temescal to Sunset, where I would catch a bus back to Will Rogers and finally trudge up that street to the Park. Just like the Camino, with all the cars racing by. But the distance, inclines and declines, and time added up to perfect training.

Hi, David! Thanks for your especially kind review of my Camino video. I can't take credit for Amalie's bright spirit or for the Camino landscape, but I'll take credit for whining about my blisters! I'm thrilled the video has inspired you to do the Camino again: if you've already done the Camino Francés, you might consider the Camino Primitivo or the Camino del Norte for more challenging routes to Santiago. You might also consider some of the other amazing hikes in Europe, like the Tour du Mont Blanc or something even more wilderness-focused. If you'd like to contribute money to my future videos, you can go to my Patreon page: at www.patreon.com/hankle As for paying for Amalie's Netflix, I'm not sure about her position on that -- I'll have to discuss with her. :) I'll definitely check out your Santa Monica Backbone hike -- sounds fantastic! Ugh, I miss the Agua Verde Cafe so much!

After a week away, Hank, your gracious reply above serves as a nice welcome home for me. Thank you. And thank you for setting up the Patreon link; a good idea by you. I responded with a donation that I hope helps your efforts. A minor suggestion: Add some interactivity via a short list of possible destinations on which viewers and/or patrons can rank or vote. You will still go where you want to go.
I like your suggestions for alternative treks. Did already Month Blanc and, in Nepal, the Annapurna Circuit, Mustang, and EBC. Other treks elsewhere as well. But now I am old and tired so the rigors of the Camino fit my need (and speed) just perfect. And everybody is just so darn friendly.
      Happy travels!

I am glad you said you a are not religious, but it is clear you have a faith. Religion is a club, faith lives in one's heart. You obviously 'felt' the Camino, you felt that wonderful presence and I have no doubt that your experience has changed your life. Now every day you will remember the beautiful peace you found on the Camino. The Camion doesn't end in Finistere, it begins. Now let God continue to walk with you and help you find what inside you feel is missing. The Peace of the Lord be with you.

I just watched this for the second time in a year and find it beautiful to watch how chemistry between you and Amalie was instantaneous. I certainly hope you still stay in touch and also that you found a way to be a couple...in the same country. El Camino was the perfect setting for your encounter. (I’m from SF and met a girl in Spain [Española], the first day I ever set foot in the country, 20 years ago next month, and felt the same way you felt about Amalie...you didn’t want to live without her and didn’t want the togetherness to end. Well, I’m very happy to say that we married, in Spain in 2005, and we live in SF. We will eventually retire in there and have agreed that [my] first order of business is to walk El Camino while she spends the time visiting with her mother) BUEN CAMINO!!!!!

Congratulations because THAT´S the magic of El Camino, I am very glad you already know my country and the north with this magic story... Of course you will never be the same as before (take that for sure) but not because El Camino is over, The way NEVER is over, it will be always with you because YOU are El Camino, every pilgrim have its own experience because is not about walking or getting to several stages, El Camino is open your feelings, expose them and, for once in your life, sharing on real time (not with and IM app or in a Wall in Fb...you look directly to the eyes of the other person right by your side and share those precios moments so don´t be afraid, you´ll never finish El Camino...
Congratulations Hank , hugs and lots of Love for you for sharing this piece of art and of course to Amalie because El Camino never stops living ....

I think that everyone should do at least once in their lives to connect with themselves, and find answers to important things from the simplicity of the route, stripped of almost everything, which brings out the essence of what we are as human beings, that somehow interconnects us all.
What an example of transformation is observed in you, from the first days to the last, is inspiring for me, and makes me wish that the days that remain to do my own Camino will quickly weigh.
Thanks again and God bless you Hank !! ❤

I also need to do it for myself. I feel within my heart and soul that l must embark on this spiritual path in my not too distant future. My brother Danny always told me to follow my path! This is exactly what l intend to do! And in acheiving this intended trek, l will honor him for planting these seeds within me. I will also honor my mom for always believing in me. Literally that view of the Atlantic Ocean from that coastal town of Finesterre is the end of the Old World (Europe)…looking out west to the Americas and the New World…and symbolically for many of the pilgrims on that epic journey meant leaving behind something that’s gotten old…and beginning something new. Hank--my senior high school students just finished watching your video, thank you, and are now watching "The Way" with Martin Sheen in connection with their senior project on "The Alchemist." They had a few questions which I told them I would ask and, please, I know you are busy--so if you don't have time to answer, I totally understand! 1. Was it easy to find places to stop along the Camino to stay if you got tired or as, in your case, your blisters were so bad you could not continue? 2. In American dollars, can you tell us how much it would cost-typically-for a hostel bed and food? 3. The most prevalent question --remember this is high school--is did you and Amelia stay in touch afterwards? 4. How do you get back from Santiago---do you have to walk or is there a bus or plane to get back home? 5. Did you ever get caught at night without a bed on which to sleep? What did you do? They wanted me to thank you for all the work that you put into the video--they said they felt as if they walked it with you! Several seem determined to actually do it--which makes me very proud! Thanks again, Hank.

    • @HankLeukart
      @HankLeukart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Hi Barb! I'm so glad that your students enjoyed the video! I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply to this. 1. It's easy to find places to stay during the Camino. There is a huge amount infrastructure (lots of hostels, called "albergues" and some hotels) along the route, so I never had a problem finding a bed. If you end up in a small town where the albergue is full, you can usually just walk 5-10km to the next town. 2. The hostels/albergues were amount US$5 per bed, and dinner was usually about US$10. You could eat more cheaply if you cook your own food. 3. Amelia lives in Denmark and I live in LA, so we've returned to our normal lives, but we definitely stay in touch. 4. Once I got to Finisterre, I took a bus back to Santiago and then I took a plane back to Madrid to fly back to the USA. 5. There was one night where the local albergues were totally full and I felt too tired to walk to the next town. However, a nice man let me and the two friends I was with stay in his apartment where he has some bunk beds for Camino pilgrims. Apparently, he does it frequently. I know that sometimes when a town has a full albergue, the church allows people to sleep on the church floor as well. I hope that helps! -Hank

Excellent piece of work! I am wondering when you reached Santiago. I left SJPP on May 17 and arrived on June 26. Your blisters make me cringe. I had my problems toward the end, after Cebreiro. I missed an important arrow and instead of turning left up along the highway to the pilgrim monument at Alto San Roque, I ended up walking off course way down into a valley. So I had to come all the way back up again. In the process, all the skin on my right little toe got rubbed off. I had a couple of uncomfortable days after that. I was often walking solo, since I never had any interest in setting out at first light. I poked along all day feeding my photography hobby. I wanted to do the extension to Finisterre, but I ran out of time. I took five rest days along the way, stayed 3 nights in Santiago, and then 2 in Madrid. I want to do it again in 2017, at the same time of year, to celebrate birthday #70. I am a retired Spanish teacher and can't get enough of Spain. Tnx 4 memories!

Walked all Galicia in 2022 (165km). A piece of advice on blisters.,.. please, do not that, don´t burst them or use a thread. Learned the bad way with a black and infected toe. Before starting the camino, buy "Compee" in a drugstore, that painlessly dry the blister, and also, buy Alcohol de Romero to massage your legs before going to bed.

This is easily the best Camino documentary I've seen. It evoked some fantastic emotionally-charged memories of my own recently completed Camino, an experience that I will cherish for as long as I live. By the way, what is the track that is played at the end? It is a beautiful piece.

Thanks so much! I'm so glad you liked the film! The track at the end is called "When the Time Comes, You Won't Be Alone" by Davis Harwell, used with permission. soundcloud.com/davisharwellmusic/09-when-the-time-comes-you
