    The 6800U is no joke. It's a little beast for emulation and PC gaming. I own the GPD Win Max 2. Ergonomically, it's not as comfortable as something like the Steam Deck but the Vita dpad, vita buttons, the native horizontal screen and physical keyboard and trackpad more than make up for it. Tons of utility.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm curious why you went for the top end? I get the storage, but 32GB of RAM for a gaming PC isn't going to help much (I say this as an owner of a personal gaming rig with 32GB of RAM, but got it for being able to have lots of things open at once AND for using part of it as cache for my HDDs using primocache. My custom NAS has 64GB for virtual machines and ZFS ARC).
      I guess what I really mean to ask is if you're planning on doing a lot more with this thing than gaming? It's certainly capable. I'm not judging, just curious if there was more to it than grabbing the highest capacity version so you know you won't ever be bottlenecked by not having spent enough.

      @@BeamerTime354 no there isn't for most people, unless you really don't want to worry about opening your device.
      Though, I'm kind of scared of Valve having the price that low because it's going to make good competition hard since Valve is definitely selling the Steam Deck nearly at cost in the hopes that they subsidize other costs associated with it (such as ongoing development and prior engineering) and profits with Steam software sales. Aya, OneX, Ayn, and others don't have this luxury and they're certainly not going to be able to build their own store to do this.

    I got the 32GB 2TB version a little over a month ago and am surprised how positive your review is. Mine has had constant quality control issues with the D-Pad constantly thinking I'm pushing buttons that I'm not, rumble happening randomly for no reason and then never stopping, and the sound card randomly only playing static noise for no reason. The device relies on turning off security issues to run OXP properly, and OXP asks for administrator privileges every time I start my machine. I'm pretty sure the audio device they used in it doesn't even have Windows 11 drivers, although that issue happened even after I downgraded to Windows 10. OXP support is largely unhelpful. It's a really dangerous buy due to their lack of quality control in my opinion.

    Few notes: - you can control rgb even in Batocera. Home buttom+vol down will change effect, holding down a few seconds will turn on/off rgb led.
    - recent update to OXP Player Center added super cool feature that I didn't see anywhere else. Now it have systemwide fps limiter and TDP automode. Now you don't need to manually find "right" TDP for the games, system will change it itself on the fly to maintain specific fps.

      Because you don’t know how to operate anything 😂
      On my PC I run stand-alone emulators smooth as butter on a baby’s bum. I don’t need retroarch and all those useless frontends because I do know how to operate systems lool
      Will do the same when my Mini Pro arrives this month and will be smooth on there and run better than on steam deck - but that’s for my needs right
      For me I pirate older games, some new ones too but those will remain for my PC or Series X. I ran emulation on series S and hated and never went back to it since I got my PC. But now it will be amazing for me to run my older games almost maxed out on smaller screen and my best emulator games on bigger screen than when they released.
      In other words for me this like being a kid again hyped up for my PSP (I got daxter version) and playing all that nostalgia on a small screen again. That’s the biggest buy for me, and steam deck ruined that and pushed me to these expensive devices by making my purchase a hassle

    I didn't see you mention it, (and considering your other content I understand why you probably didn't think about it since you focus more on handheld devices and retro gaming in general than PC gaming specifically) but I wonder how much better the battery life could be without sacrificing some clarity if you could use AMD's FSR. Theoretically this device should be capable of it, and it's one of the ways I use on my Steam Deck to help increase battery life without sacrificing visuals too much. I saw it wasn't a built in option on the quick menu for the OneX like it is in the Steam Deck, but you should be able to get it running on the device. Maybe it could be added to the quick menu later.

    Great video and review as usual, Russ! I do like the sound of this device, but no micro SD slot and a weak D-pad are kind of a dealbreaker for me. I like having extra external storage of a micro SD. Also, I probably would want to play some older 2D games and would want a solid D-pad without risk of a missed input. Other than those few issues, that seems like a great handheld gaming device!
    Though, I have a Steam Deck being delivered this week, so I'm pretty much all set for gaming devices for now.

  • @Bushidounohana
    @Bushidounohana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Excellent perspective, as always. I really appreciate the diplomatic expectation-setting at the very top of the video. The specter of the Steam Deck looms large over these devices, the ever-present oddity of an outlier (as in hardware subsidized by software sales) almost single-handedly redefining the market for handheld PCs, but it’s not the only game in town. While I’m quite content with my Steam Deck, I love seeing what others are doing in the space and how other gamers might respond differently with their own wallets. The lack of micro SD, however, seems a head scratchingly glaring omission.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I'm wondering if I should have saved up and gotten one of the other options with the 6800u later, but I can't say I really regret my decision because I have questions about long term support for these other products like the OneXPlayer her and the Aya Neo. Valve is a more established company (with probably deeper pockets) and can afford to support the device both in repair (and to my knowledge none of these other companies are providing replacement parts, though they might and I missed it) and in software updates (my steam Link hardware STILL receives updates even though they stopped selling them several years ago) and their track record in support so far has been phenomenal. I'm not saying these other companies can't or won't compete in terms of support, but they don't have the track record Valve has and are therefore more of a gamble.
      While I might miss out on things like a little better performance, a little better battery life, and a much better screen, I'm not sure if it would be worth the trade to make a gamble on support. I already had to have my steam deck repaired because it fell off my table and broke the shoulder button, but Valve support was great about it (I have heard of someone not having a great experience with Valve support on a broken trigger, but I didn't get a lot of details about the situation) I also knew the support would probably be good going into the purchase in October after hearing about the opening of repair depots, the parts being sold on ifixit (unfortunately the button board I needed to fix my bumper was not on ifixit or else I would have done it myself and I wasn't sure what momentary switch to get as a replacement to solder on) as well as how quickly software updates that fixed major problems were being produced.

    • @Bushidounohana
      @Bushidounohana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CreativityNull agreed-another aspect of how Valve is redefining this space. While I don’t have any experience with the other vendors in the handheld gaming PC arena, one always reads horror stories involving smaller companies and getting lost in lack of support situations. While other companies may not be able to compete on the subsidy front, they would do well to structure their business models on the best possible customer experience-before, during, and after sale. I think this speaks to a larger void in most modern consumer goods, though, as we are ever shifting to this more “crowdfunded,” almost knee-jerk kind of economy where items and trends tend to feel a bit more fly by night, no? That’s not to say that this device (or any other) is doomed to be poor quality, just that the sense of investment in customer care seems a long lost relic of a time long, long ago. (Says the 42 year old who remembers a slightly different situation “not long ago.”)

Good luck finding shipping batteries. They purposely do this cuz at most you can use these batteries for 22 to 30 months unplugged before they are done. These arent 3ds/vita batteries. They are junk.

      $630 Steam Deck 1, plus $5-80 per steam game, in 2/3 after 2023 buys new steam deck 2 for $500 (most likely won’t be) plus more expansion (SD or SSD) means total cost over 4 years = $1200 PLUS
      $1200 in 2023, 2-3 years later still strong, will be still stronger or equally as strong or slightly weaker than steam deck 2 (basically SD position now) while running basically all pirated steam game and destroys emulations after 4 years = saved more than steam deck spending $1200 from the start 😂😂
      It’s like my $4000 tv from 2016 all 2023 models have over mine is OS updates, maybe an OLED panel (more money) or Dolby atmos which most people barely use and comparing to my buddies 2k atmos system my 2014 surround system sounds better... sure people called me stupid back then but my 4k tv had all the HDR and other specs TVs have now. VRR maybe not but does 24/30/60hz which most TVs don’t do 24hz making movies feel like soap operas. And the consoles that do VRR are not true 4K lol = aka I future proof while those with $500 1080p people will constantly be upgrading to get the features in future devices while I continue to use them lol - FYI my tv first model for those “crystal LEDs” too hahaha

    One thing i wish these handheld pc companies would include, is a "no battery" mode so that it can draw power directly from the wall instead of using the battery at all. Most of the time when i play on these handheld pcs, im directly plugged into my usb charger like i would be my desktop. It seems like such a simple fix.

      Especially on the windows devices. On the steam deck they feel superfluous if you're not doing anything with it besides treating it like a gaming console (like the switch). Except for typing on the onscreen keyboard. Weirdly the dual track pads feel way better than trying to tap the key on the screen.

    The steam deck definitely has an edge when you consider what the thing can do for the pricetag. Availability wise though steam is shooting themselves in the foot. With handhelds like this rolling out the door while steam deck is still unavailable to even reserve in a lot of places around the world, steam's risking the deck becoming obsolete before it gets a real chance to hit some decent sales numbers.

      I agree to an extent but if Valve releases a upgraded Steam Deck 2 it will alienate their current customers and those who are waiting for the Steam Deck in other regions will just wait for the updated version which will hurt their sales.
      Plus these more powerful devices are just too expensive for the average customer, so I believe the Steam Deck will be fine for now.

    Also I do not understand why the manufactures do not add HAL effect sensors on triggers AND sticks, instead of just one or the other. And why is OLED ALWAYS missing from the high end devices. The HAL effect sensors are important, game controllers tend to have either the stick or triggers start to go back with in 2 years. Its shitty to have that go bad on mobile gaming device as it ruins the entire device not just a controller.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the device. Steam Deck has the sticks and trigger electronics on separate daughter boards from the main board so they can be easily replaced (relatively easy at least.)
      As for why they don't put them on, I have no idea. Especially with the triggers. The hall effect joy sticks might be relatively expensive to source, but the Xbox one (and series) controllers use hall effect triggers. Someone's gotta be making those affordable.

    • @umamifan
      @umamifan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OLED is probably missing because of either the margins that the companies are working with is already so thin, so they couldn't afford to slap it on, or that they think IPS LCD is superior in this use case. And yeah, I don't understand why it's either or when it comes to the hall sensors... I'm guessing they only do it for one or the other just so they can say "Hey look! We got HALL EFFECT SENSORS!!! BUY OUR PRODUCT!"

    Honestly, while having properly upgradable (i.e. 2280 slot, not 2230) storage is great, the lack of a micro SD card slot kills it as a handheld well before you factor in the price (which double kills it for me).
    And frankly, trying to sell this as a gaming PC would be absolutely asinine. The only thing that makes this a gaming device at all is that it's a handheld. As a gaming PC, at the price point its pushing for, it falls flat on its face. Calling it a Gaming PC is in a way de-emphasizing the handheld aspect and selling it in its docked form, which is dumb. In its docked desktop form it is nowhere near a gaming PC in terms of specs and gets crushed by its competition. For the price ($1200-1300USD), remember, we're ignoring the handheld aspect, I could literally get a 3070 Ti laptop.
    The benefits of these handhelds is that they are chiefly gaming handhelds that can also function as a basic PC on the side.

    I'd love to see a video where you give a guide on how to set up the perfect emulation platform on x86 handhelds outside of the steam deck, like a lot of these systems are starting to run Windows 11 and while they have have holoiso installed on them to mimic the steamdeck OS nearly perfectly, I'd like to take advantage of the fact that it has windows on it but still enjoy the emulation freedom that comes with having an overall stronger platform than the steamdeck. I know I can just download Yuzu and Cemu, etc seperately and call it a day but is there something akin to EmuDeck for x86 handheld systems that I'm not aware of where its' a singular program I download and sets up a majority of the settings for me on their own?

    What about the fan noise?
    I like the idea but it can't beat the SD in price per performance. The GPD Win 4 is more interesting as it has a physical keyboard and some little "trackpads" for mouse control even if I don't know yet how well the work in comparison to the Steam Deck.
    Does the 6800U draw more power at the low end as 6W for something like Celeste sounds much when on the SD something like Stardew Valley and even DOSBox (M&M World of Xeen, Doom 2 etc) draw between 2.8 and 4W? On the SD using Win10 + Steam Deck Tools runs the Celeste at 60fps with a power draw of around 3W (limit set to 4W, wattage reading with Rivatuner).
    Also the RGB LED strips are over the top and I would turn them off all of the time.

    Very nice review, as always 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼.
    I have a question:
    Maybe you could do a poll here on TH-cam to see how many people would be interested in a dual screen emulation device with stylus (primarily to play Nintendo DS games, but of course also for all the other games)? I myself have been dreaming of such a handheld for a long time, and I wonder if other people feel the same way. I think this could be a real gap in the market for Anbernic and all the other manufacturers. Because let's face it, there's no third-party device that makes playing DS titles feel right. And that's really a shame, because the Nintendo DS library in particular impresses with a lots of incredibly good games.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen some cool things software devs have done for DS and 3DS emulation on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, but so far that's been the only real thing toward it I've been able to find. Getting a $1200+ USD android smartphone, especially if you usually get iphones or usually spend less than half of that on a smartphone, isn't really what I'd call a good option if all you really want is to have better DS/3DS emulation.

    • @-dAtA-TRoN-
      @-dAtA-TRoN- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CreativityNull But that would not be a good solution in general. A handheld needs buttons to be fun to play with. And besides, a stylus would be missing. That wouldn't be a good alternative to a proper third-party device.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-dAtA-TRoN- The stylus is not missing on the Galaxy Z Fold. They're all capable of using Samsung's S-Pen. You could also plugin something like the Gamesir X2 and have buttons. I didn't mention this earlier because external controllers are pretty common for Android emulator users and S-Pen support is pretty highly marketed on the Fold and is also on the spec sheet.
      Besides, nothing is stopping you from using another capacitive stylus in place of your finger. The DS stylus was just a chunk of plastic used on a resistive touch screen.

    • @-dAtA-TRoN-
      @-dAtA-TRoN- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CreativityNull Yes, would still not be the same as having a "third-party DS". The stylus thing is pretty good, but I don't want to lug around a controller attachment all the time. I understand what you're saying, that one could already play DS roms quite well, but a real device for it would still be unbeatable.

    • @CreativityNull
      @CreativityNull 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@-dAtA-TRoN- I mean, I never said it was a perfect solution, it's just workable if you already have this phone. As for "having to lug a controller" I disagree. Especially since a lot of them are compact, like the Gamesir X2. You're already probably carrying a phone and getting a handheld device would be phone plus handheld device. How is that different than phone plus controller as far as carrying things around goes?
      I mean, I'm not saying this is much of a solution for other reasons that I already mentioned, but the reasons you're bringing against it are kind of nonsensical.
      Now would a DS like piece of hardware be nice? Absolutely, but between the hardware and software requirements (like requiring a different stylus solution since no one would find a resistive touch panel acceptable these days and a big capacitive stylus would probably obscure too much of the screen. To my knowledge the only good stylus solution for Android has been the S-pen and I doubt Samsung is sharing their proprietary engineering for smartphones. An x86 could go for something more like a screen pen tablet, but then that brings the x86 problems with it) I doubt anyone is going to find it profitable for just DS/3DS emulation since while it's nice, it's relatively niche AND there's no new software coming out to entice new customers to the product. For most other retro handhelds, the form factor was close enough multiple devices could be replicated at once. For home console stuff, like retrons, they're providing the compute hardware primarily and not designing how to do inputs, as that's already handled and isn't screwed by people's expectation of new technology or manufacturers no longer making old tech for cheap due to no one buying it (which is probably where resistive touch screens are right now)
