I saw Chitty the other day at the Warbirds & Wheels museum at Wanaka, New Zealand. She's on display there until April 30th, lent to the museum by her owner Peter Jackson. It was amazing to see the original Pierre Picton car in the flesh. Well worth the trip.
i have had a ride in this car its fantastic there were 5 chittys made in total one was the car in the film which was the road chitty ,one was the speed boat one but does not exist now another one was the flaying one ,and one which was attached to a trailer
I read there were two driveable ones. One was a little smaller than the other. I also heard the drive on them were modern. Like they had a v6 engine and stuff. There was one that was a driveable boat and the one in the scene where the water is coming up on it, That one was only used in that scene. That is just some info i read on it.
To answer your questions. GEN22 was built under licence by MGM to promote the film when it came out, as GEN11 had be intrusted to Pierre Picton. In the video they describe the car as 1 & only, but there is an exact twin of GEN11 & that's GEN22, which ISNOT a replica. And my friend bought Chitty at Auction in November 2011 in Manchester for an udisclosed figure, he is the 4th owner of the car, the last onwer spent £50,000 on having fabric wings fitted complete with Propellers.
There is only 2 of them left now, as MGM destroyed them. GEN11 resides in New Zeland with Sir Peter Jackson, Beaulieu National Motor Museum own one of the cars from the water scene, engineless, shorter & has an aluminium exhaust pipe. A Friend of mine owns GEN22 the exatc twin of GEN11, but with fabric wings, instead of Fibreglass. GEN22 IS THE ONLY MGM APPROVED Chitty in Europe, as she was built to promote the film.

Aye GEN 11 is the original Chitty. Sold in 2011 to a buyer in the USA, then sold again to a buyer in New Zeland. But as I said GEN 22 is the ONLY MGM Approved Road Legal Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in Europe.
That's because in the film, the sounds of a Hispano-Suiza were dubbed onto the soundtrack. So in real life (as you could imagine), the car itself has a Ford V6 3-litre engine.

Strange because the engine of the car in the film sounds exactly as engines did in pre WWI autos, like a tractor really, instead of a 1960's vintage. There were several of these made for the movie and just like the American Batmobile, everyone claims to have the "original".

@0812201 Unless you're squeamish, Chitty isn't necessarily an Edwardian car. It was built by Alan Mann Racing in 1967 prior to the film. What's more, the car itself, as explained in the video, is fitted with a 3-litre Ford V6 engine. So, the sounds of an Edwardian Hispano-Suiza would've been dubbed onto the soundtrack.

hah...this car was created by Zborowski. read something about it's history. If I am not wrong this car was buried after its owner died during some race in this car. driver lost his head in accident....
