not long before my grandfather died I stayed with him for a while and he drove around most of the filming locations for this film it the best memory I have of him explaining all the different places
Thanks for posting this. Never realised about the Kempton Park Waterworks until seeing this, and I used to live only a mile down the road at Hanworth!! Chitty is part of my family's history as we were the nearest house, or to be exact bungalow, to the windmill. My mother used to wheel me down to the windmill everyday in my pram to watch the filming in progress of Chitty!
Never knew about kempton waterworks my father in law worked there for many years. Watched the movie so many times and never noticed. Watching this I knew before the caption told me.
@@vincecox2916 The outbuildings to the windmill were constructed for the film. There was a TV programme for the 50th anniversary. I was both impressed by the construction and disappointed that in real life it was just a windmill by itself.
I was born in High Wycombe and lived there until I was almost 7. I still remember the outings to Fingest, Turville, and Turville Heath almost 60 years ago. The Chilterns are a lovely part of England. On occasion, have returned for a nice walk and then a pint at the Bull & Butcher. Since then we’ve been in Canada and am currently breathing in smoke from forest fires.
I love love love kisses from Brazil when I watched this movie the first time I was 11 and now I'm 56 years old and still watch with my kids. loved your work, stay with all my affection of a man aged 56 years who still has a child inside.
This is interesting because my father made half of Truly's car! The engine and chassis were built to Dads own original design and Russels water is where the car must have been so that Dads chassis is the part that falls in the water!
Katie, that's awesome thank you for sharing. I had the opportunity as a very young lad to see Chitty herself. It always was my favorite movie and the biggest reason for why I got into vintage auto restoration. The cars built for the movie were really quite something!
the only real problem as he mentioned in his biography no explanations on a backstory on the characters or the villians motivations.just most remembered for the set and photography songs and acting.
Very pleasant film, thank you. A great film, an iconic childhood memory. Sally Ann Howes passed recently but Chitty and her beautiful voice never will. Best wishes to all.
Thank you for taking the time to film these. It really brought back some wonderful memories growing and watching the movie. It's amazing how many filming locations look nearly identical today.
We all gathered around the big Screen this Christmas to watch Chitty Bang Bang. The youngest we have here are 17 years old. It's still a great entertaining, and intentionally cheesy masterpiece. Love it. Wish all of England looked like this place still. This was truly English.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of my all time special films. I grew up in Berkshire, and thankfully for me, visited all the locations previewed in the short film. Many thanks Vince, for bringing back childhood memories. I used to work for Alan Mann, the creator of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car. Small world...
Now I can't get that song out of my head! Great job on this video, I loved that movie as I remember watching it in the theater when I was a 5 year old child in 1968. I even had a Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang lunch box and I sure wished that I still had it now.
Very nice. It's so refreshing that so many of those fine old buildings in the film are still standing, though some of the vegetation has grown considerably since 1968. Perhaps the movie encouraged a historic preservation movement in those parts! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for putting this beautiful special trip down memory lane in. This is what it's really about. Many of us do understand that and others haven't any knowledge.
Thanks so much for making this! its much appreciated - I been watching this film since I was about 6 years old or so and im now 33.. love what you done here...awesome
Thank you so much for this, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was my favourite childhood film. I grew up in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, so many of these locations are familiar to me. I saw the windmill as a child, it was like meeting a favourite celebrity.
Vinny, many thanks for this mate. This film is, along with the Jungle Book THE film of my childhood (songs by the Sherman brothers in each of course) and I have been cycling round Turville and the Chilterns for years in large part because of the connection. Thanks for pinning several more places down for me, I am now off to do some more exploration!
One morning in early 1970s I had just arrived at school in Lowestoft Suffolk the school was and still is next to the A12 road, from the playground we saw Chitty bang bang drive pass under it's own power, unbelievable but true, will never forget it, I'm now 55.
They built one roadworthy version for the movie, and some other ones for certain scenes. That original car is now owned by none other than Peter Jackson of LOTR fame.
Loved this! Thanks for posting! I was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and never realized I was a few hundred feet from the Toyman's workshop. I did see the aquaduct outside of town where Chitty first lands in Vulgaria and Neuschwanstein. Nice to know I'm not the only one seeking these places out!
Where did they film under the castle where the kids were being held captive. It looks like Pirates of the Caribbean. The film was being shot at the same time POTC was being built...possible?
I'm curious about the castle also but the outdoor scenes. I ended up here because I was looking at the history of Neuschwanstein. Did they actually allow the filming to take place there at the castle???
Thank you for this fabulous little film. Chitty Bang Bang has always been mine and my brother Jeremy's favourite childhood film. Now both my children (3yrs and 21months) are obsessed with it and want to watch it at least once a week. Although I went to college in High Wycombe many years ago I had no idea I was so near to the filming locations. You have saved me from having to go and hunt them out. Many thanks again.
Man In The Wilderness ; I just read a trivia comment regarding that very fact. It seems the producers wanted Dick VanDyke for the part, but he only agreed if he didn't have to use the English accent. He caught a little criticism for his 'Cockney' accent in the Mary Poppin's film a few years earlier. I also read the producers wanted Julie Andrews, aka Mary Poppin's for the part of Truly Scrumptious, but she had a current engagement and wasn't able to do it.
thanks so much for this! We were watching the film on TV today and started talking about the locations. 5 minutes later we watched your great little film! Thanks again for doing this and sharing.
Thanks Vinny Cox for making this, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was born and raised in Middlesex and lived close by near Uxbridge. Brilliant video. Fond memories of watching this film as a child. Really nice idea to revisit the locations. I live in London may have to drive out to visit some of these now I know where they are.
Excellent comparisons from the '68 film and now. I saw the film at school in '74 and thought it was such an exciting film. Ambience, characters, adventure and quaint. The only childrens book by Fleming. So, many cars about.
I can never get enough of that music. Thanks for uploading. Chitty bang bang, Chitty Chitty bang bang, Chitty bang bang, Chitty Chitty bang bang, Chitty bang bang, Chitty Chitty bang bang, etc
great job, enjoyable to watch, off camping to germany and visiting Neuschanstein castle this year. After seeing the film as a child when it first came out at the cinema, i have never forgot the image of the castle and now finally get to visit.
Well done Vincent, excellent job. Thank you for identify the locations. I guess it was your curiosity that led to this being made, wanting to either confirm the locations or help preserve the accuracy of where scenes were shot. I have a similar interest in helping preserve the accuracy of what films/TV programmes were shot at Brunel University along (my place of employment) as well as when and with which actors - and thus avoiding errors. Lol. My husband and I are in our fifties and raised five children. We always said "Had your chance. Muffed it" and "Cyril! You're smokin'". We also referred to our children as kiddly-winkies and the grand kids now, too. I don't know why it never bothered me to do it, but when I think back about how that guy creeped me out as a child, I can't believe I've done that to my own kids! 😬
Enjoyed. So nice to see not much change over the years. If that were here in Florida where I live those buildings would have been torn down and new buildings built twice by now.
, that song after a while is a bit much, only thing I would change is play something else in the middle, " toot sweets" begin and end with the chitty song,. Other wise it was very cool to see so much of it has survived more then 50 years, I like places like that. Very nice ...
My favorite movie as a child... I'll be 50 in a couple of months. Shared this movie with my 9 year old son not long ago.

Enjoyed. So nice to see not much change over the years. If that were here in Florida where I live those buildings would have been torn down and new buildings built twice by now.
