I love my vintage tech razors. They're so forgiving and provide an excellent shave that's both close and comfortable. I haven't tried all the available blades but my favorite so far is pol-silver.
Thanks for the video. You and I are around the same "vintage". (1962 here). I just bought a 1962 tech and 1951 tech. The 1951 tech is in almost new condition in the original case. I can't wait to shave with that one. Love your videos man!
Hi Ken, i found your channel about a month ago on the advise of someone in the wet shave society on Facebook and i have to say ive enjoyed your videos. I have been shaving my head for ten plus years with a 40s tech i got off ebay $20 and restored. I always loved the shave from it but recently updated to a rockwell 6c so these videos showing side by side like this are a huge help for a "newb" like myself. Ive learned a lot from your videos since ive started wet shaving my face recently, so thanks for that. Keep up the great work sir.
That's an unusual angle you used with the Vintage Tech, but as I watch more and more videos from you and other community members, I learn that the angle is subjective. It seems to boil down to the usual YMMV hehe. I have a Gillette Tech Fat handle on its way to me, can't wait to use it but after this video I really want a Gillette Tech with a slim handle. It's funny how we keep buying razors even after finding one that is like... perfect. I have my Merkur 34c but I had to have a vintage gillette with butterfly doors... thenI had to have a 3 piece vintage gillett, now I want a vintage classig tech and I'm pretty sure I will "need" to have an adjustable gillette by xmas hehe, that without taking into account the lovely razors that are in the market right now (like the Muhle Rocca... OMG what a beauty) . I wish my beard grew faster and my skin healed faster so that I could shave daily xD
A brush test comparison would be an interesting video (synthetic vs boar vs badger vs horse). To see what gives a better lather with hard vs soft soaps, what you think feels better on your face, etc.
I use a vintage Tech (NDC, c. 1946) for my weekend "me time" shave ritual. This video is helpful, that I hadn't considered that many modern 3-pieces would be knock-offs of those old war horses. If mine ever does break, I can consider a replacement without ~70 years of prior wear on it.
Enjoyed seeing the garden Ken. I too collect (and use) vintage Gillette razors. My oldest is a 1906 and the newest is a 1973 with a lot of razors in between.
Hi My name is Julio Rojas and I live in Santiago, Chile. I've been enjoying your videos recently and decided to subscribe. Been wetshaving for almost 3 years now. Have a nice rest of the week.
My vote is for the "original" Tech and I'm standing by it...lol.. Nice shave Ken, no mention of the winner, but it all looked good. Love that burn buddy. Cooler weather in September, it will be nice at the meetup. Great video Ken, thanks. Enjoy!
Great video and shave again Ken, I’ve just purchased a Vintage 1976 Gillette Super Speed razor from America, I’m in Scotland, really looking forward to it arriving, will be interesting to see how the Vintage does against my Edwin Jagger 89, keep up the good work!
Just purchased 1940's gold vintage tech so looking forward to trying that. Have a vintage gold Ambassador that I'm having replated and refinished that I love as well. Also, checked into the Mers soap as I was impressed with the lather shown in your video. By chance have you or anyone following tried their Myra or Chromium soaps? Like to get feedback on those. Also impressed that they customize strength of scent so if anyone has tried the extra scent to either or both - would appreciate feedback. Ken, if your ever in Santa Fe - like to meet and buy u and the Mrs's a beer or glass of wine - maybe swap salsa recipe ideas. Take care and as always - great video.
The Global Shave looks like its a rebranded Baili. If it is, great razor. Honestly, Id put any of my Weishis, Bailis or Qshave razors against anything else on the market and be confident I could get an equaly great shave at a fraction of the cost.
Hey Ken! I love your shaving videos. I am a college student and was trying to find a cheaper way to shave. Now I know too much about shaving and it is much more expensive! I think I am so intrigued by everything because you get a piece of history and you feel like you went back in time everytime you shave. My real last name is Gillette but my first safety razor is a Merkur Long Handle. I feel like a traitor to my own family but I am using a Gillette Wilkinson Sword blade! I am saving up for a Black Beauty. I can't wait to shave with some quality Gillette history! Keep up the videos!!
Great shave Ken! There’s something cool about using a vintage razor! Btw I’ve ordered and used a couple of soaps from Mershaving and really enjoyed them. I live in Canada (Toronto) so they definitely send international orders- recommend their methol blends. The soaps are are also made without menthol for who ever wishes them.
Hi Ken. Really enjoyed this one. Don`t have either of those razors but I do have a Chinese knock off of the tech. A really good little razor. Thanks for the video.
I tried the blade that came with the bevel. Can't say that I cared for it. It reminded me a bit of a derby. It didn't seem sharp at all. Now it was smooth but it didn't seem very sharp. And at the end of my 3rd pass I still wasn't satisfied with where my shave was. So I won't be using the blades any more. Lol
Beautiful garden. Was that a dragonfruit between the cherry tomatoes and jalapeños? Loved this comparison video since a Tech was something I was looking into as well
Great shave Ken. There's nothing like a tech shoot out. I have a vintage gold Gillette Tech and it's a really sweet shave if you slow down and take your time with it. That's one killer garden my friend and can't wait to see how you make your salsa to.
Open-comb disposables?!! Gillette Guard sound interesting to say the least. Just ordered a Gillette Tech (ball-tip) - I love Gillettes am am rotating this in with the Slim Adjustable.
i recently find your channel, and I told you that I got an old tech made in egland gillette whith a short alloy handle I do not like it, and that's why I made a new custom tall and beefy 11cm long x 12mm thick knurled steel handle that feels perfect.
Awesome video, Ken. I collect vintage razors. I am thinking of getting a modern DE razor but have not decided on a brand yet. Ordered the Gillette blades you use often, so I am looking forward to that. I am looking forward to your next video so I can figure out how you do your giveaways. Always a pleasure. Oh, great looking garden! Up here in Canada, i don't get to see orange treees, so thanks for that! I do love the slims!!!
As I understand, the vintage tech had a better quality, especially for the guard, than these modern versions. A few questions : why do you keep water in the sink to rinse the razor, instead of letting a little tap water flow on the head to rinse it? It will be almost the same water consumption, but without hair and foam floating around in the sink (never liked that myself). Second question-why do you like the lather pretty thin or more watery for most of the time? I personally love a rich lather that provides a thick cushion.
Nice comparison. I love the old Gillette Tech razor. One of my best shavers. Just as good or BETTER than all my new stainless steel razors. Happy New Year Ken!!! I enjoy your videos.
Hi Ken! You really got me hooked on wet shaving. I have ordered most things to get started. A Merkur 33C is on the way from Amazon UK. A 100 pack with Wilkinson/Gillette is on the way. A green Proraso pre shave cream has been ordered. But what I haven’t ordered is a brush. I’m looking at a Mühle Kosmo silvertip badger brush. The price on it is 90$ in Sweden and I wondered if you have tried it and if it’s a brush that you could recommend. Love your videos, don’t know why. Shaving isn’t very much action but I still got hooked and I’m a subscriber now. Ooh and one more thing, I think I have seen one of your videos were you say that a new razor should be sanitised before using. I have a one litre of 99,5% proof Isopropanol, spraying some of that on should kill any germs or is that overkill.
Mikael Sällström Not overkill at all. A new razor should be no issue but a used I’d clean quite . Brushes, you should look at the Semogue Owners Club Badger. About 1/2 the cost but Muhle are excellent but cost more👍👍
I tried a new razor rock safety razor and i liked it one of the best shaves i have had in a wile! Stay cool ken its 115 degrees here today in phoenix it is record breaking heat🌞🔥⛄❄😎👍
Kensurfs It's really nice. Totally different compared to the Brut Original and Brut Musk. It's fresh, sea salt like fragrance. Highly recommend you try it Ken.
Great shave Ken. Your comment on becoming familiar with a razor and rushing through is a good point, and I like the fact you don't rush through with the shave, and you obviously enjoy the process. The lathering up and use of a quality razor and blade all add to the enjoyment of the shave, a large reason most people take up the wet shaving hobby.👍🏻
I have the Lord L6, its got the Gillette tech head but is super light. Would love to know the weight of the 2 you just did the face off with. Thanks for a great video
Hi Ken, myself and others have put your name forward to test the new Fine Accoutrements Razor. There was a poll on their Facebook site taking suggestions. (you should check it out) Hope you get to be one of the first.
Kensurfs Just checked out your latest video. Great news that Fine are going to let you have one of their brand new razors before they are offered to the public
Hey Ken. I’m looking into purchasing a vintage razor. If you could recommend one to buy which one would it be? It’s a treat for my 50th so I’m not too restricted on price. Your advice and recommendations would be appreciated. 💈👍🏻
It seems everyone who has the Gillette slim loves it. I think that’s the one I’m going to go for and I like the idea of a birth year razor. Thanks for the advice Ken and have a great week. 👍🏻
Ken, I have a small request. You haven't shaved with Tabac in quite a while, and I just got my first stick, and on the first shave, I struggled to get a good lather. Maybe I didn't used enough soap, or there might be another hack that I don't know about. Can you please show how to get a proper lather? I think I remember you used a stick once, so it'll be cool if you can revisit that one. Thanks
have you tried rubbing the stick directly on ya face ?? then using your brush to lather up ? i prefer a boar for this method - really gets into the pores of the skin .
I did, and still couldn't get it to make a good thick lather. And I'm using a Semogue Excelsior 830 boar brush, which I love, and I've been using it every single day for the past 3 weeks, trying to break it in real nice. Maybe I didn't use enough soap, I was in a bit of a hurry. You can check my shave here: th-cam.com/video/l-2BQUKHJuw/w-d-xo.html I did shave well, but the lather was thin and dried out pretty fast.
Hey, Ken! I am new to the channel and loving the content! You get tons of suggestions but here is my two cents. The original scent I bonded with as a teenager in the 90's was Brut Actif Blue. They only made it for a few years and it was the best! I would love to know your thoughts and experience on it. Thanks!
Ken I have a question, I've been shaving with a DE razor for a little bit now but how often should I be shaving for my skin to get use to it. It seems like every time I shave my skin, definitely near the neck area becomes a little irritated. It's not from pressing too hard or anything like that I go fairly easy and I'm using the merkuer 34c which is pretty mild.
Hey ken I'm a new subscriber and second time commenting. Ive been working through you old videos and noticed you were using that global razor I liked the look of before. Now I understand its a replica so I now have buying options which is just great. I stopped buy a cvs last night in hopes of finding a cheap shave set or at least a brush and soap but they had none lol. I did how ever pick up some aqua velva after shave and some nutregena mens shave cream in a tube. So I got home preped for a hand lather shave and it was terrible. The cream seamed great it was so slick I couldn't hold on to any thing till I wiped my hands lol. But, I was trying a new blade I found in a local grocery store I they were generic but I remeber it said made in Israel so I was optimistic but it was all bad. Mabe it was the cream maybe it was me I am novice but I feel like it was the blades. I mean my first shave with the free Vander hagen blades and shave butter was 5000 times better than last night lol. Any way the aqua velva at the end was great 👍. I was thinking maybe of sending those blades to you to give a try after all you are much more proficient than myself so as to see if it was a rookie mistake in use of them or in buying them lol. Thanks in advance. P.S. people like comparing you to other well people so I wanted to throw in my opinion and that is you are the Bob Ross of shaving lol.
The Razorock DE1 or the Teck II would probably one of the others that would be close to a Gillette Tech (never used a Gillette Tech, so I'm only guessing). Razorock claims that the Teck II is modeled after the Gillette Tech. Oddly enough Gillette still makes a 7 O'Clock Sterling safety razor for India. It has a metal head and what looks like a plastic body. Have you ever run across it?
I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. Oddly enough there aren't any reviews on TH-cam. They're pretty common on Ebay, usually under $10. I might pick up one as a travel razor.
We have a Hammonton, here in South Jersey it’s the blueberry capital of the world!! 🥧 when I go there I always get a big ol’ blueberry pie ~P.S~ you know how most ppl say those old Gillette vintage razors have a “Story to tell” well I recently won a PIF over at “The Shave Den” Fourm and my prize was a 1932 Gillette fat handle tech (made in 🇨🇦) and a 1957 Gillette SuperSpeed (regular) and I noticed on the dang head was the name “JIM” lightly in graved!!! You can barely notice it but if u look for it you can deff see it lol!! So that being said, I notified the person that gave it to me thinking he gave me the wrong one... maybe it was his dads and his dads name was “JIM” I don’t know lol 🤷🏻♂️but back to “if your razor could talk thing, what would it say” mine would say Jim is an asshole use pencil ✏️ next time !!!! 💈😁👌💈 LoL idk maby “Jim” was a regular all-American middle-class type of guy . He got his use out of it and now it’s my time! Lol maby I’ll ingrave my name on the opposite side!!! (SIKKKKE) 😉👍
Nathaniel Matthews My neck still gets bit. I use a milder blade and shave my neck at an angle 45 degrees with the grain on First pass. Plus sometimes I pull the skin tighter to avoid nicks👍👍💈
never nicked my myself and I have a mole and a bump, place setting on new feather blade to 3 and if you feel it doesn't do like it used to bump to 5 and choking way up on the handle like you water painting then stretch face for flat surface;now razor burn is another story,I have to use room temperature water to wash then shave.
Great shave. It's nice right now in where I live as we're in the mid to upper 70s and lower 80s unlike the weather you're getting in where you live. Do me a favor: do a shave with the Fatboy as it's been a while since it was last used on camera
Fellas I have my fingers and toes and tongue crossed. Prayed to God asked him to cross his fingers and toes and if my ma is in heaven to tell her cross em to so I can win a giveaway lmao.
I love my vintage tech razors. They're so forgiving and provide an excellent shave that's both close and comfortable. I haven't tried all the available blades but my favorite so far is pol-silver.
I just ordered that Sumatra razor from Global Shave Club yesterday. It looks amazing with the black/rose gold & I can't wait until it arrives!
👍👍
Thanks for the video. You and I are around the same "vintage". (1962 here). I just bought a 1962 tech and 1951 tech. The 1951 tech is in almost new condition in the original case. I can't wait to shave with that one. Love your videos man!

Enjoyed seeing the garden Ken. I too collect (and use) vintage Gillette razors. My oldest is a 1906 and the newest is a 1973 with a lot of razors in between.
Tim Omick how does the 06 shave?
It's an open comb Old Type Single Ring. The men in 1906 must have been really tough as the razor is extremely aggressive!
Tech sport zorak Cap I have one also this razor soft and fine
Sorry for my horrible English

Both razors seem to work equally well.
The garden looks great!

My vote is for the "original" Tech and I'm standing by it...lol.. Nice shave Ken, no mention of the winner, but it all looked good. Love that burn buddy. Cooler weather in September, it will be nice at the meetup. Great video Ken, thanks. Enjoy!

Can you compare Muhle R89 with King C. Gillette? I feel they are less often compared because of the difference in price bracket.
I find them about equal

Ken, I have a small request. You haven't shaved with Tabac in quite a while, and I just got my first stick, and on the first shave, I struggled to get a good lather. Maybe I didn't used enough soap, or there might be another hack that I don't know about. Can you please show how to get a proper lather? I think I remember you used a stick once, so it'll be cool if you can revisit that one. Thanks
Martin O The Classic Shaver I’ll get the tabac out Martin👍💈
have you tried rubbing the stick directly on ya face ?? then using your brush to lather up ? i prefer a boar for this method - really gets into the pores of the skin .
You can check my shave here: th-cam.com/video/l-2BQUKHJuw/w-d-xo.html
I did shave well, but the lather was thin and dried out pretty fast.
I just got a 73 tech aluminum. But the head had just a small spot of bubl8ng with the plaiting on the inside where the blades go. How serious is that
I saw a red tip at an antique store in NC the other day. I just couldn’t part with $40 for it.
Daniel Jennings That is a little pricey👍💈
Hey, Ken! I am new to the channel and loving the content! You get tons of suggestions but here is my two cents. The original scent I bonded with as a teenager in the 90's was Brut Actif Blue. They only made it for a few years and it was the best! I would love to know your thoughts and experience on it. Thanks!
Sellers Burgener I’ll see if I can find some 👍💈
Nice shave Ken, do you have a Merkur Vision? If yes can you do a shave with that?
Huub Sukkel I actually do not have a vision👍💈
Ken I have a question, I've been shaving with a DE razor for a little bit now but how often should I be shaving for my skin to get use to it. It seems like every time I shave my skin, definitely near the neck area becomes a little irritated. It's not from pressing too hard or anything like that I go fairly easy and I'm using the merkuer 34c which is pretty mild.
Yash Patel Try a mild blade like Personna blue or Gillette Wilkinson sword. Go with the grain one pass until the skin gets used to it
Kensurfs right now I’m using the astra premium blades. What kind of blades are those compared to Personna or Gillette
Yash Patel I find them just s but more aggressive💈
Kensurfs okay cool I went ahead and bought both personna and wilkonson sword to see which one my face likes better hahaha! Thank you!
Hey Ken. How was Equalizer 2???
Darren Cunningham It was good, but original was a bit better👍💈
One would hope that the “global” shave club ships internationally lol
Nostrajohnus 👍👍
Nostrajohnus-- ohhhh the irony 🤦🏻♂️
RobotShlomo it ran across it yet. Does it work good?
I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. Oddly enough there aren't any reviews on TH-cam. They're pretty common on Ebay, usually under $10. I might pick up one as a travel razor.
RobotShlomo 👍👍
We have a Hammonton, here in South Jersey it’s the blueberry capital of the world!! 🥧 when I go there I always get a big ol’ blueberry pie
~P.S~ you know how most ppl say those old Gillette vintage razors have a “Story to tell” well I recently won a PIF over at “The Shave Den” Fourm and my prize was a 1932 Gillette fat handle tech (made in 🇨🇦) and a 1957 Gillette SuperSpeed (regular) and I noticed on the dang head was the name “JIM” lightly in graved!!!
Hey, how do u take part in the give away?
perseus 23 look at the next video, it will explain everything
When you first started wet shaving, how did you avoid cutting yourself? I just did my first shave and my neck did not thank me.
Abraham is a kewl guy!
Jill Snoddon Absolutely 👍💈
I just scored a Vintage Slim Twist for $13.04 including shipping w/case and blades.
Jill Snoddon Awesome
Jill Snoddon Dang!! I finally scored a ‘61 Fat Boy, but it cost me a heck of a lot more than $13! To be fair though, it has been refurbished
I received nearly mint Fat Boy from France for 60 euros plus 20 euros for delivery. 😱😭😀😀😀😀
Unfortunately, prices in Europe are much higher.

Kensurfs thank you, I'll check it out.
Great shave. It's nice right now in where I live as we're in the mid to upper 70s and lower 80s unlike the weather you're getting in where you live. Do me a favor: do a shave with the Fatboy as it's been a while since it was last used on camera
GoldenSteelTV Good Call, the Fatboy needs to be used again 👍💈If I forget, please remind me
That's a rebranded Baili BR131. It's $4.50 at Groomatorium.
