Its strange isnt it. Small hatchbacks without turbos were the norm years ago. I had a Fiesta 1.25 in 2002, it was a great car, never felt like it had a lack of power because I didnt know any better. Nobody ever complained about lack of power yet now we have turbos on most small cars, all of a sudden without a turbo everyone struggles to cope with making any kind of progress. How is that possible ? We all managed twenty years ago with no problems. Cant people drive properly anymore ? No, its the fact that everyone wants to treat the road like a racetrack, nobody has any patience anymore. Nothing wrong with the car. Its attitudes that have changed. People today expect everything or they throw their toys out the pram. What a sad society.

I drive a 2008 Honda Fit manual, purchased 8 years ago, no major problems. Got to be one of the funnest cars I ever owned, and that includes a BMW 325i.

I have owned two Honda Jazzes - the first a 2006 Mk1 CVT and my current one is a manual 1.4 2013 EX - which I prefer. Totally brilliant TARDIS. I have had no problem taking four people and their luggage on holiday. It's the way the back seats fold totally low and flat that makes it such a great little load-lugger. I know the wannabe Jeremy Clarksons haven't liked the much-maligned 1337cc NA engine, but it is a fantastically reliable power plant.
Hi Nodge X, they a designed with practicality in mind. We love the TARDIS feeling when you jump in a car the first time, and the Jazz defiantly has that!

I own a 2012 Fit Sport(I'm in Canada) and I love it. Sure you have to ring it out, but that's the fun of driving these cars; makes the regular commute fun. Funny thing is while in the UK it's aimed at the older/retiree demographic, here in North America, it's equally split between young first time car buyers and older/retirees. And they hold their value cause fining one in excellent shape in the used car market is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Like me, people tend to keep them as long as they can. 6 years on and I have no plans to trade up. If anything, my 10 year old may end up inheriting it in 7-8 years!
Thanks for a very comprehensive review. After considering a number of small hatches with automatic transmission to make driving easier for my wife to drive (sadly no longer able to drive myself), I have now ordered the 1.3 Exec Navi version. Watched again, thanks. Perhaps the best and objective video on this model Jazz/Fit. I bought a Jazz Sport Navi May 2019. The first trip was from South Coast England to North Coast Scotland and we were perfectly happy with this 2019 Jazz Sport. I traded my Civic Sport 2017 for the Jazz Sport. Even though it doesn’t have the turbo it responds well when you want to give it some wellie, which incidentally doesn’t make much difference to the fuel consumption. As for practicality the “magic” seats are great. We often take a couple of dogs in the rear seat well with room for a passenger in the rear to control them. We managed our 7’ (2 metre) Christmas Tree by flipping a back seat and front seat down. The auto beam change and auto wipers are useful. Personally I like the sportiness of the car (I am a motorcyclist so enjoy working the vehicle), but I like the fact that it isn’t flash like the Civic Sport (pretending to be a type R), it’s discreet, so surprises when you do overtakes efficiently. Yes it has the power for good overtakes. It’s size is just right for exploring small lanes in the UK, as well as parking in crowded supermarkets. Sometimes I think that I wouldn’t mind a Mini Cooper S, but when it comes to practicalities and access I think the Jazz Sport is the better option for me.

Hi, I tested one of these which was advertised from a dealer but although i liked it even with the CVT i dident like the way it steered like as though the castor is set too much as it wants to center itself back too quickly into to going in a dead straight line and although it handles well this feeling spoils it If you know what i mean.? I wonder if the 1.3 model with the standard tyers feels better or is there a tweek to fix the sport out there to make it feel better in this dept?
I think the cupholders at the air vents are there to help keep drinks cool during hot days.

I've had a Jazz in Thailand for ten years now and it has been absolutely superb. No problems at all. The auto gearbox is wonderful.
10-year old jazz's have traditional planetary gear automatics. The third generation jazz has a more fuel efficient and faster-accelerating continuously variable transmission, which however is a newer type of device which Honda has fewer years of of experience with. So far not a lot of problems though.

Thank you for such a comprehensive review. This (2019) is the last year for the Fit/Jazz in the USDM, unfortunately. We also miss some of the features you have, like the LED OEM headlights and the speed limiter. Still a great buy, however.

I mean the Honda HR-V has the same engine but with a turbo, isnt it possible to buy that stock turbo and build it into the jazz for an extra 50 hp?

This was a really great video, thank you! It reassures me just how glad I am that I bought this 2015 Fit EX the other day! (I would prefer a deep blue one, but mine's red; you can't really be super picky when you're just looking for used vehicles, but I still have a great one!) Mine even has a sunroof, so that's fun once in a while. And yes, I love the manual transmission! I can't wait to have a really great excuse to fiddle around with the Magic Seat system!

I bought one in the UK back at the end of 2018. All was well for just over 4 years.
It was an okay drive. Nothing special . Bit noisy at 70 MPH (112kmh). Infotainment system was just about passable. Fuel economy was okay, and it's party trick is that it's quite spacious, with the magic seats.
But at just over 4 years old, then my low pressure fuel pump went wrong.
In the USA they had a recall for I'm pretty sure the same model as my one . However Honda UK seems to apparently think that my car was not affected by the major batch of faulty Denso fuel pumps. So I've got a £1200 bill spread over a few garage visits whilst the fault was trying to be found.
It's really easy to find that there was a massive recall of 700,000 Honda vehicles around the age of my one about Denso low pressure fuel pump failures, but somehow I magically never got one of those, but my fuel pump has gone wrong.
Honda UK are being really useless.
I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy another Honda car or motorcycle EVER EVER EVER again.
Things go wrong sometimes, but Honda UKs abysmal response to me has meant I can never ever trust Honda again.

The gas tank underneath the front seats limits the space available for the driver's feet. Move the seat all the way back and the gas tank hump intrudes into the area for your feet. You get more room for cargo, and more space for the rear passengers' feet, but less space for the driver's feet.
Great “little” car 👍
As a 71-year-old I still like to drive the way I did when I was younger - revving an engine to redline is NOT at odds with the way I like to drive. Why should this change when I get older? I can't run as fast as when I was younger, I cannot lift as much weight as I could when I was younger, I cannot ejaculate as many times per day as I could when I was younger, but my ability to press down on a throttle pedal with my foot, all the way down as far as it will go, has not changed. I sometimes "thrash" my 1.5 liter Jazz-Fit to near redline, which is about 6600 or 6800 RPM. I do that when passing a vehicle on a highway, or merging onto a limited access highway. With the CVT - which does not have a rubber belt by the way - it has a special kind of multi-element steel belt - I simply push the throttle pedal to the floor, and let it back up when I've reached the speed I want. It is really simple: There is no turbocharger to kick in, so acceleration is accomplished by revving the engine to the highest speed - where the highest torque is. With a manual transmission acceleration requires more gear changes. The manual transmission makes the gear changes easy, and fun. The CVT transmission make it effortless. And naturally aspirated engines tend to have longer service life than turbocharged engines. So what's the problem? Must be you don't like shifting. The high-compression engine engine on this car winds up to high RPM elegantly. It just LOVES to be revved. The engine stays put at exactly 6600 RPM while the CVT does the work of bringing the vehicle and mostly everything inside it to about 120 km/h, in about 9 seconds. With the CVT you get FASTER acceleration than is possible with the manual transmission. If you want to get the best acceleration, the paddles shifters are useless, and silly. You just put the throttle pedal to the floor - that is all you need to do. When you reach the speed you want, just click on the cruise control and take your foot off the throttle pedal. Not all CVTs are alike and Honda has one that has a better reputation for reliability than the CVTs used in, say, Nissan vehicles, and better acceleration from 35 km/h to 100 km/h (given the same horsepower and torque), than the reliable CVTs found in Toyotas. Toyota CVTs are designed to imitate the feel and sound of planetary gear automatics, at the cost of acceleration. With the Honda CVT you don't get the customary sound and vibration CUES that you are accelerating, that you get from manual transmissions and from planetary gearset automatics, but you are ACTUALLY getting better acceleration. You don't get Jerked Around like you do in manuals or planetary gearset automatics. But you accelerate faster. Which would you rather do, accelerate rapidly and at the same time smoothly and inconspicuously, or accelerate less rapidly and get jerked around in the process? Apparently many people prefer to get jerked around, Toyota knows it, so their marketing people said lets design the CVT to jerk people around.

Brilliant comment that Sir. I agree about CVTs, the smooth and seamless operation is far better than even 7 speed auto boxes, you can still feel the gears going up and down, and often not when you want it to. Ive driven Toyota Yaris and Mitsubishi Outlander CVTs and really like the way they drive the car forwards. Get the revs up and when you are doing the speed you want, it all calms down. Effortless. Ive always had manuals but at 51 I want driving to be more easy, and CVT is what I would like next. Japanese brand, not sure which one yet but for all the people who moan that CVTs are slow etc then thats up to them. Its a lot more relaxing with a CVT than a manual.
@@oddities-whatnot I made a mistake though. I said at highest revs is the highest torque, while actually it is the highest horsepower, not the highest torque, that is at the highest revs. I could be mistaken but my understanding is that it is at the highest horsepower, not the highest torque, that we find the maximum acceleration. My 2015 car is my first with an automatic transmission. If it had been an old-fashion planetary gear-set automatic, I would have stuck with a manual transmission. But with the easy availability of info enabled by the internet, and the information that well-designed, well-made, electronically controlled CVTs get both better fuel economy and faster acceleration than manual transmissions, I went for the CVT. I did a little checking and found out that some companies were gaining a reputation for making rather unreliable CVTs but that Honda seemed to have a reputation for making CVTs that lasted a long time with minimal maintenance. I'm not sure what I would have done if the Jazz-Fit had a choice between a manual and a dual-clutch automatic. Another thing that led me to choose the CVT in the Jazz-Fit was the specification Honda provided for the gear ratios in their manual transmission. The 6-gear transmission had a 6th gear that was very close to the 5th gear. Also, at 70 miles per hour in 6th gear the engine was running at a much higher RPM than in the Jaxx-Fit with the CVT. Like maybe 3300 rpm instead of 1900. Rather large difference. I surmised that as long as the 1900 was correctly chosen by the CVT, the result would be better fuel economy and longer engine life. We don't know about engine life yet but in real world comparisons, by owners, it has turned out that at highway speed the manual has about equal fuel economy to the CVT, despite the engine's higher RPM. Both CVT owners and gearbox owners are reporting highway fuel per mile results that are even better than the EPA estimate. Reports from the real world for around-town fuel per mile results were, as usual, lower than the EPA estimate.
@@OnlyDUImeLicense The EPA found fuel better fuel economy in the Fit-Jazz's CVT, but the EPA does not estimate acceleration. In Fit-Jazz evaluations by various professional evaluators, what turned up is that the CVT gets both better fuel economy _and_ better acceleration, than the manual shifter. believe Edmunds got 0 to 60 mph figures of 9.2 seconds for manual and 8.9 for the CVT. Or maybe it was 8.9 and 8.2. Something like that. At any rate the CVT did slightly better. My understanding is that the manual accelerate a bit faster from 0 to 20. But in real-world driving, that is not of much value to me. I only occasionally feel a need to do jack-rabbit acceleration as soon as a stop-light turns green. But I often want good acceleration when passing a tractor trailer on the interstate, or merging onto the interstate from the merge-lane. I can't tell you how many times I have been creeping along in the merge lane, waiting for my chance to squeeze in between heavy traffic on the interstate, and I see drivers courteously slowing down to let me in, or moving to the left to let me in - unnecessarily.
The Jazz is an unsung hero of a car - sure, it won't pull the skin off a rice pudding unless you wring it's neck, but it is just such a good little car on so many fronts that it's no surprise that so many have been sold. Am currently driving a 2011 1.4 ES manual with 37k on the clock - I'm getting 49.5 mpg and that's mainly on rural B roads. The only thing I've done to it since getting it in August has been to install some LED headlight bulbs which make a big difference, especially living in a rural setting where there are few streetlights.

Obviously the target market for the jazz was people looking for a practical and cheap car. The NA 1.5 engine had reasonably decent power output for its weight, though it does require fairly high revs to reach and is best experienced with the manual transmission. The car in this set-up is excellent for people who enjoy driving but still want good economy and practicality. Make no mistake, it isn't a hot hatch but the car has the flexibility to be driven reasonably hard without excessive speed, or conservatively for optimal fuel efficiency, with the reassurance that the engine is reliable. It is a shame that the sportier trim with lower profile tyres, etc. were not offered with the manual transmission, and the 4th gen doesn't seem to cater for this little subgroup of owners. Still a sensible car that can be enjoyed.

Very popular in Australia though sadly has been dropped along with City sedan. 1.5L was the only engine and many were automatic.
Real mpg's are very close with what Honda is promising, opposite to its rivals.
I don’t see the CVT as a slouch - it’s not a supercar by any means but if you put it into S and put your foot down it will certainly get up to speed quickly enough for (e.g.) a slip-road that isn’t long enough.
Am i the only one struggling a little with going from 5th to 4th gear,i tend to drop into 2nd,Plus on starting just once the engine made a very strange noise like a huffing and puffing sound,Similar to old cars where it was running on 3 spark plugs instead of 4,i turned off the engine, waited a few seconds and started it again, and all was good and has been ever since ,but ti was kind of weird and scary,Yes the car is brand new,it has now done 950 miles .all in all very happy,.

I have just bought one I have found the gear change to be noisy and clunky, my dealer says it’s ok. My last 2 cars we’re Suzuki and I wished I’d stuck with them. There hybrid engines are more economical and perform better. But it’s a nice car so will stick with it.

Main problem with the automatic speed limiter is that it thinks that '30 in 200m' means '30 now' - which doesn't impress the traffic behind you !
No auto airco in the 1.5 in the Netherlands. What were they thinking? It was almost 30000 Euro's from new.

The 1.5 Sport in the UK doesn't have climate control or rear camera I understand. I assume this is to keep the price level with the 1.3 EX which does have these features.
Rear cameras cost very little these days. I wonder if the wiring is already in place, and the entertainment unit is one that is already capable of receiving the signal? All you Absolutely need for climate control is a thermistor that controls a switch that turns the compressor on and off. However adding climate control may be more difficult as you cannot simply replace the control unit that controls the flap that switches between hot and cold air, and the flap that switches between recirculated air and outside air, with the control unit for climate control. You need to be able to have control of those flaps somehow, either retaining manual control or adding servo-control.
What about steering wheel adjustment, drivers seat adjustment, spare wheel?
I’m trading my Civic Sport for a Jazz Sport as it is more practical for local lanes and small roads. Ironically it is more fun to shoot around the smaller countryside roads than the Civic Sport. However, I did have to pay extra for the rear camera and for the Garmin Satnav. It’s not quite as high spec as the Civic Sport, but not far off and a lot more practical for parking in modern uk car parks. Also easier to get in and out of. The Civic is a bit too cockpit like. I’ll miss the turbo, but the Jazz is 20% lighter which helps make up for it. BTW, please cut out the stereo type comments about the sort of people that would choose this type of car. I’m getting on in years, butI still ride large motorbike and like to give my cars a bit of wellie...

No mention of the lack of a spare wheel? Which can be purchased for three hundred pounds!
Does it have that new high pressure engine that is going to wear out because the fuel leaks into the oil lubricant far too much?
The model 2 was the most attractive version.
Same basic engine but only the ones that are turbocharged seem to have the oil dilution problem. Not sure about other countries but in the US, no model has turbocharging available. Even the turbocharged engines should be alright, if you don't limit it to short trips, where it doesn't get driven far after it warms up, if it even warms up. Warms up quite fast though. In warm weather it warms up (blue light goes off and coolant temperature reaches 75 deg C in less than 2 km. In cold weather, maybe it will take 3 km. Get out on the highway once every week or 2, and drive for 15 miles. Blow out the carbon, evaporate the gasoline.
I have a jazz. The best thing about it is the boot space and once seats are folded it carries more than bigger cars. Worst thing about it is the poor acceleration and the massive blind spot near the side mirror.
How so with the blind spot?
That speed limiter will be standard on all cars in 2022/3 if the EU gets its way and will decimate the new car market

I have a 2015 Jazz and decided to take the new model for a test drive. I am not impressed regarding the position of the door mirrors and the large ridiculous "lump" behind the rear view mirror that makes the cabin see claustrophobic, what were Honda thinking? Also now having to pay for paintwork, ridiculous !!!

But concerned about too much electronics some of which seem 'nagging' or even subtlely try to take control away from the driver.
Despite the need to rev it, these cars seem to do well with real world mpg, 52.7mpg for the 1.3 manual according to 'honest john real mpg', so efficiency seems pretty good.
Real world figures are all that matter when it comes to mpg.

I have owned a few Honda jazz vehicles over the years and still own a 2016 Sport model however unless Honda pull their socks up and ad a turbo to compete with the competition I will stay away from buying another one despite the reliability / Hyundai or Kia next time

Forced induction will mean less reliability without a doubt. The pragmatic decision makers will always choose reliability over short lived thrills I feel. For the sports oriented, there'll always be the European boxes, or the CTR.

Am I the only Jazz user who had problems with ALL brake calipers? I'm about to replace the last of all calipers next week. The rubber seal around them wears out and become rusty to the point where they have to be replaced. My Jazz is 2005 and had over 90k miles when I bought it two years ago, now well over 110k.

OSV Thanks. My car mechanic told me that the engines of these cars would last three bodyworks if you know what I mean. I hope that this car will keep going for another few years so that I can slowly save up for the next car, whichever the model it will be.
Spot on review. The CVT is just plain awful, truly awful. You can put your foot flat to the floor (1.3 model) and nothing happens, change into "sports" mode and use the paddles and ... nothing happens. I'd go as far as saying it's almost dangerous as you just cannot use the power to escape from potential hazardous situations due to this. Pay an extra £1100 for the CVT box? Seriously? They should take £1100 off the price for you having it! Shame because the 1.3 engine seems really good but counter productive as you have to rev the guts out of it to reach it's potential which you just cannot do with the CVT auto version. 49.5 mpg from the 1.3 CVT is what I'm getting which is not too bad but nowhere near the claimed 60.1 but when is it ever?
The warning systems alone make you want to take a baseball bat to the car and finding out which one means what (they are not ALL obvious) is not always easy and highly distracting to safe driving. Figuring how to stop each warning sensor is not always easy either and the manual is not great in helping out in this area. The manual, ah the near 600 page manual. It makes you want to pull your hair out just trying to find out basic information. The media screen is as unresponsive as unresponsive gets and really clunky compared to other manufacturers offerings, I've worn the fingerprint on my left index finger away pressing it for only a week! The ride is just a tad too firm on our crappy UK roads but it could be worse.
It's a shame about the above really because overall it is a really good car. The driving position is excellent for a small car (though I personally find the seat not good for posture due to the headrests as it pushes my head forward uncomfortably though YMMV of course) and the space and practicality is second to none at this level. The storage capabilities are fantastic if you need them and what you get as a package specs wise is really good. I so wanted to like the new Jazz but the negatives (in my opinion) clearly outweigh the positives and it's not a car I could live with.
Don't agree once you get used to it I don't think the CVT is all that bad if I need more power when moving off, I just flick the accelerator, as a previous manual driver, I'm loving not to have to bother changing gear. as for the warning sensors, you can turn off the lane departure and parking sensors off at the touch of a button.
Yes i know exactly what you mean with this,I still love my new 2018, Model I did also find a slight backache after driving 400 miles in one stretch. but nothing serious, But have to add the Kia Venga driving seat are just a bit better for the very long drive,
I had a Jazz - brilliant load carrying and superb magic seat system - I was easily able to load the car with a weekends worth of gardening and general rubbish for the tip for instance, and it coped really well with town driving too being easy to park (why you'd need a reversing camera I don't know) and a small turning circle.
It was also tremendously reliable and extremely cheap to run (great town mpg). Visibility was excellent apart from the slightly too thick A-pillars and overall it was a good car to own.
However, it was THE single most BORING drive I have ever experienced. Fun? You're having a laugh aren't you? I think it's deliberately set up this way for good ride quality with the reasoning that anything even slightly exciting might give it's majority octogenarian users a heart attack........

I have a Jazz auto, top spec. It’s a nice little car, although when I was looking at it, I was told it has apple car play. It doesn’t. For sat nav, i use one on the phone, much cheaper than the £600.00 quoted. Was purchased via Motability. Would love a sun roof. Magic seats are great

I do miss my 2015 honda fit EX-L (USA Market). its was a very nice car very good fuel eco. it was ok when driving it at short distances but long hauls was exhausting I feel every small pebbles on the road.

I get 40 mpg city and highway
own 1 really smooth driving on highways, but on roads with pits, rocky or unasphalted areas won't recommend because the front is lower on this model and it tends to scratch on the ground when you pass onto road pit or badly designed bumps.
Why would it even have a transmission tunnel if it's a front-wheel drive vehicle?

Actually the Jazz with the CVT gets BETTER acceleration than the Jazz with the manual gearbox, not to mention better fuel economy. And it does NOT have a rubber belt. It has a specially designed steel belt, consisting of several hundred "push plates" and a number of steel bands to hold them in place. The silly paddle shifters actually slow it down. To get maximum acceleration you just put the throttle pedal down to the floor. This causes the engine to rapidly reach the RPM where it has the most power, and then it stays put at exactly that speed, while the CVT does all the work of finding the pulley ratio that gets the wheels to catch up as soon as possible. The process is so smooth, you don't feel it. You know how sometimes you don't realize how fast you are going when you are driving on a straight, smooth highway with broad shoulders? Well that's the way acceleration is with Honda's CVT. It doesn't FEEL like it is accelerating quickly, but it is actually acceleration MORE quickly than the same vehicle with a manual gear box. If you want to get jerked around by a series of sudden changes in gear ratios along with sudden changes in engine speed, then get the gearbox. If you want to get smooth acceleration that brings you up to highway speed before you realize it, then get the automatically adjusted pulley pair. The gear box is for people who want to be jerked around, being made to FEELlike they are accelerating; the CVT is for people who want to actually accelerate.
The only other things to wonder about in regard to the CVT are: how long will it last, how expensive might it be to replace should it break or wear out. Except for some screw-in sensors, most repairs would involve replacing the entire unit with a new or rebuilt unit. Unlike Nissan and a few other companies, Honda has had a good record in regard to CVT reliability and longetivity. Will it last as long as a gearbox? Probably not. But its torque converter will probably last longer than a gearbox's friction clutch. A friction clutch is an inexpensive part that wears out, and requires expensive labor to replace. An entire CVT transaxle, new or rebuilt, is a VERY expensive part that requires similarly expensive labor to replace.

Honda hasn't got a truly small city car on offer yet, so why are they spending resources on fiddling about with this rather nondescript vehicle? It's not small enough to fall into the company of genuine city cars like the Fiat 500, Hyundai i10/ Kia Picanto etc, and they've made it even bigger in this version! Not exactly cheap either.
Paying extra thousands for orange stitching for a weird obsession to satisfy your aesthetic needs seems a bit silly and wasteful.
Think the commentary should focus on the car at hand and leave the other options of cars to be considered by those interested in the

I had a 2004 jazz from new...5 recalls. ..noisy manual gearbox....noisy rear wheel bearings.....NEVER again !
I guess you had pretty bad luck. Bought a 2002 Jazz 1.4 2 years ago. Bear in mind the car was cat c and to this day not a single issue. Paid £1000 for it. Amazing car, cheap to run and cheap to maintain so far. I guess with cars sometimes it is luck of the draw. Had a Rover which was useless so I know where you are coming from.
Recalls are a good thing. I had 3. One for the handbrake, one for a switch in the door and the Takata airbag. The whining gearbox however is not that good although the thing shifts brillantly. And The brake discs are also made of Alfa Sud steel. The thing that I don't like is the seating adjustment. One can never find a nice driving position. It is also very pricey compared to some stiff Korean competition.
@@jimtalltheislandbrothers6639this IS one the MOST reliable cars ever. I've had a 2006 cvt a 2003 manual and currently 2002 cvt. I just love the reliability economy and practicality. I love the Honda Jazz. My current one is black with a spoiler, reversing sensors , sun roof, electric mirrors, cd player, mud guards behind the wheels- it is cute and smart. 82000 miles on the clock only paid £550.Can't go wrong.

@@jimtalltheislandbrothers6639 I went from Birmingham to Southampton for it!! Also it wasn't perfect!! Overhead saloon light didn't work door open light showed on dash- these due to the top of the little switch in the drivers door being broken. Simply put in a little wide head screw in it- fixed door open light on dash also the saloon light fixed. There are a few little dents I've got to fix plus there is the engine light on dash which I won't bother fixing. Done 3 trips to Lancaster from Birmingham 270 miles round journey drives like dream. Just bought a Auris Multimode 2011 because I retired last week and my wife ORDERED me to buy a more decent car. Will hate to let the little Honda go!!!!

Cvt always attract problems. Get a manual and you will see reliability increase
