      @@TaylorJWilliams Well, not everything needs to be foreshadowed or mentioned. I didn't feel like it was a new invention for this season, it felt more like an expansion. I think the reason why they didn't even mentioned Bonnie's backstory was because they wanted to shock the audience. We spend the entire season trying to find out who killed whom. And every scene we would ask ourselves: Was it her who died? Is he the murderer? And putting Bonnie under the radar was the best way to surprise us. At least, I was surprised. I really thought she was a minor character.

    The biggest problem with TV today is that most shows are written for one season without a real plan for multiple season arcs. Time and time again I start a great new show and am totally enthralled through the first season. Then we get to a 2nd season and you could see they had no idea where to go and the shows jumps off a cliff as the characters and plot points become absurd.
    Bloodline is probably the best example of a show that has a fantastic first season and should have stopped there as Season 2 and 3 are utterly ridiculous.
    Big Little Lies Season 2 has great performances so it wasn’t worthless. The problem is the overall season 2 arc really goes nowhere and you realize after the finale that it was pretty pointless.

      just my opinion, but that plot thread felt like the writers realizing what we all did in season 1: there was no logical reason for a woman like Bonnie to be married to a man like Nathan. the two didn’t have anything in common even in the first season. it seems like they’re a parallel to Madeline and Ed...they also got married for the wrong reasons but it didn’t work out for them

  • @yvesmaker
    @yvesmaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    "Season riddled with loose treats and ideas" is the perfect description. Like Madeline in the first episode working as a realtor with no experience at all at that, and that subject being dropped out after. Or the school, which was so important in the first season (including teachers and teaching) it only serves for some little scenes. And there's so much more. Another thing you didn't talked much about was the editing and cinematography. There were many moment when beginner mistakes were commited, with light, position, color scheme... And the editing was so overwhelming when in the first season was so relaxing.

    They already made the mistake with that ending for season 1, they tried to rectify it with this season, but alas they stretched 6-7 pages to a complete season.
    Ed was small in season 1 because the tv series cut his and Madeleine's son, which would've led into a specular storyline to Madeleine's with Abigail, which would've also made his hostility to Nathan in season 2 much more understandable.
    And Bonnie's reasoning for pushing Perry was in the book.

We cannot get aggravated by you.... but you can aggravate a sense we have of, say, frustration with product placement or something. Your staph infection can be aggravated by dirty clothing, but a scratchy shirt doesn’t aggravate your otherwise healthy skin, it irritates it, the experience of which can be aggravated by your stress level at being annoyed by a parking lot attendant etc 😉

The women and their kids lives being interconnected in unique ways. The story was serving the characters. But season 2 it just didn't feel the same. Meryl is a brilliant actress but the show didn't need a main villain, she somehow manages to annoy the fuck out of everyone. The Celeste custody battle ended up taking over the whole show. All the other characters became subplots. The whole thing felt scripted like a bad video game. The dialogue was so repetitive and just didn't feel natural. It felt like I'd heard these characters express the same emotions before but only the lines had changed. The whole thing felt like such a damn waste because they did have some decent ideas and a brilliant cast.

    10:15 I disagree a little bit with this interpretation of what was intended with Bonnie's mother. I think what they were trying to say was that the anger she displayed at that moment was her mother's fault. Not like at that moment she actually was thinking of her mother, but she blamed her mother for the emotions being there at all. I only bring this up because it was described as her motivation vs the effects of childhood trauma - which I think is an acceptable retcon as it's a theme present throughout the show. But yeah it's completely added in after the fact even if I think it still works.

    • @hannah6034
      @hannah6034 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bonnie literally tells her mother 'i wasn't pushing him i was pushing you.' She was definitely supposed to be thinking of her at that moment, or specifically the abusive alcoholic version.

    • @justascomplicated8182
      @justascomplicated8182 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannah6034 My comment was aimed more towards how he portrayed Bonnie's 'motivation'. This is obviously just headcannon, but I feel its more accurate to say that Bonnie's mom was the source of the anger that overcame her in that moment rather than her "motivation". This is a show that has been depicting the long lasting effects of trauma varying in intensity (Madeline's regret of not going to college compared vs Jane). So to have such a literal interpretation of this characterization seems like its missing the mark. I feel like the show understands trauma enough to make this distinction.
      I only bothered to point this out originally because while Bonnie's development in this season feels jarring as she was just kind of a foil to Madeline, I did really like what they did with her this season.

    I didn't like Madeline's ending, i feel they could have explored better why she did what she did. Since season 1 the show implied that Madeline wasn't satisfied with her life, she literally screamed i want more and it's kind of anticlimatic how that concludes in just her marrying Ed again. They could have dived in more about her frustrations with never going to college instead of putting so much focus on Ed and Tori or Ed and Nathan fighting

    Such a disappointing season. They took it from an intelligent murder mystery to basically a courtroom drama. I also never got why they had to keep the secret either for all season 2. Just tell the police that the violent and abusive Perry attacked and that you defended yourself, hence his death. What's so wrong or criminal about that? Like, the whole core premise was so weak.

    • @FernandoSanchez-ws4jf
      @FernandoSanchez-ws4jf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      They were in shock which is why they initially lied. Then they lied to the police and coordinated the lie between them. This is obstructing an investigation and conspiracy, which are both crimes. That's why they didn't tell.

    • @Loffeleif
      @Loffeleif 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Fernando Sanchez I know, but it's such a weak plot point to drag out the season with. Especially considering their crime is not being truthful, and you don't feel there is that much at stake really. Sure it's criminal, but it isn't the end of the world either. If it was something darker, like one of the girls intentionally murdering Perry while he was minding his own business and the others covering for them, I'd be into it. But this is the reason there wasn't any need for a second season - the first one was perfect and didn't need to be fleshed out more.

I personally love the book a lot more than the TV show.

    3. Tori Bachman should've had more screen time and a little more prominent.
    4. Bonnie's mother plotline didn't do much and felt like it didn't need to be longer.

However I agree with you, they should have planted a seed in the first season to foreshadow her prior trauma somehow. I think in the book Madeline’s exhusband mentions it at some point. Big Little Lies was personally, a tough show to watch due to the content. Personally, I don't watch most shows that get a lot of Emmy love unless I deem it worthy. Season one was good but really tough to get through. Season 2 I thought was okay but not bad. I enjoyed Renata everytime she came on screen in season two and I liked Jane's storyline and I wanted to see how she healed and moved on with her life after what happened to her. Her relationship with Corey was really sweet and her opening up to him about what happened and how he accepted her and respected what she wanted was nice. Definitely nice and a reminder that not all men are assholes in this world. And also I thought Shailene Woodley is a great actress and I enjoyed her scenes. That being said, the acting itself is solid but the story didn't have enough meat on the bones. The storyline with Mary Louise ran its course but the season spent way way too much time on Nicole Kidman's character and what she goes through.

    Meryls Streeps charachter wasn't created by the TV writers. it was created by the original book author. Lillian Moriarty wrote that role for Meryl. as she said she didn't want to write the sequel but the only thing she wanted was to create and give the role to her favorite actress.
