    I love this analysis but I disagree on one point.
    None of Fincher's camera movements are ever "accidental". They are entirely deliberate and precisely thought out. They always have an exact purpose, even when they are so miniscule that you barely notice them or think they're unintentional.
    In the interview with Tex, they are there to subconsciously highlight the tension. It seems it's the most relaxed interview, the most straight forward one, but we are all on the edge of our seats trying our best to figure out if Tex is bullshitting us or if he actually believes what he's saying. It's a lot more subtle and a lot harder to see through, there's no obvious signs and you're so focused and tense you can cut that tension with a knife. Those camera movements confirm that tension by tilting in line with the characters leaning in, just like we are leaning in towards the screen with anticipation.
    Fincher uses a lot of stationary camera shots masterfully, but it's the shots where he moves the camera that are his biggest masterpieces.

    • @danielochoa9465
      @danielochoa9465 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Like the scene where Tench is on the retreat and is explaining how people start to develop a profile that aligns with his investigation. Director Webster was talking about how you can see killers/messed up people from a young age and that if he could,he would lock them up forever. The camera then slowly zooms into Tench, thinking about how maybe what the director said could relate to Brian, how they were run aways, loners and never fit in just like how Brian was in school.
      Shows great

    • @tiggytiggsboo
      @tiggytiggsboo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Totally agree. I really didn't know if I believed what Tex was saying, or even if he believed it, and I think that's what Fincher was trying to get across. You said it a lot better than I did lol

    • @juliemason2551
      @juliemason2551 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Good observation. I wasn’t sure whether Tex was genuine or not and the scene was played sympathetically “ in my head”. However there was also an air of mistrust. This is just my take on it. I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination “I say what I see”
      That said I absolutely love this show. I can’t get enough and will wait in anticipation for the next season

    • @natteandersson
      @natteandersson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I agree with you, however the episode you're referencing was not directed by David Fincher. The director was Andrew Dominik (Assassination of Jesse James, Killing Them Softly).
      Fincher directed the first 3 episodes of the second season.

    • @karakurie
      @karakurie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Right. I appreciate that he chose to examine the shots, but I felt they were a bit shallow observations, but not useless, of course.
      The kemper scene for example, Ford and Tench are in the same shot not to remind us that Tench is a chaoerone, but that they are on the same page of thinking. Then they are divided with closeup shots as they both go on their own with asking kemper questions, while the camera slowly changes to having kemper in the middle. When someone is the in the middle of a composition they have the most power, so the audience feels small.
      That's why it was creepy. Because Tench and Ford were broken and Kemper won the scene. It was believable because the dialogue, music, acting, cinematography all worked in harmony.
      I do like how he handled this video, but it doesn't give a lot of help to someone who wants to try showing and not telling.
      Art is a series of patterns, it's not magic. Many artists say they work with feelings, but also because they know the patterns so well it feels like it's intuition. I wanna see more concrete videos about Mindhunter

  • @sjc4
    @sjc4 5 ปีที่แล้ว +223

    Fincher's going about Mindhunter like you see those "crime board" cliches used in bad detective shows, but in reverse, and in a really clever way. Instead of starting with the many and coming to down to one, it starts with one (Kemper) and branches out and down exponentially as they learn more about the crimes and add more categories to the pathology. Kemper's one scene in season 2 is shot in the chapel, where he's directly under a cross and in front of the electric keyboard. He's the point of origin of all of it, preaching and teaching Ford in the pews about the darkest parts of the human psyche.

    One of my favorite "show don't tell" moments ironically comes in the form of a conversation between Dr. Carr and Tench after the interview Elmer Wayne Henley. They go back and forth about Henley's involvement in the crimes, with the topics of homosexuality and age coming up, and of course both Carr and Tench are defensive about each of these topics, with Carr being gay and Tench having just learned his son was involved in the death of a child. It may be obvious but I think it's such a good moment that illustrates the struggles and the character of both of them and it doesn't beat us over the head with why they think the way they do. Dr. Carr doesn't come out to the group here, and Tench does make some dramatic reveal about his son either. It's just an important scene that is there to discuss the nature of the crimes while also giving personal involvement to the characters that adds drama to a simple exposition scene.

    G'day Skip, I'm retired now but I used to be a film and TV critic for a large newspaper. Early on in my life, growing up with more and more TV that came from America, and after, I became totally turned off the typical cop show, lawyer show and doctor show. All set out, written and edited to fit neatly into an hour slot with the requisite minutes devoted to commercial breaks.
    I haven't truly enjoyed any cop show since Hill Street Blues, yet that followed the established recipe, it was well scripted and acted by talented people.
    Then comes Mindhunter. What a totally fresh breath of air and how courageous to show the reality that 90 percent of detective work is just sitting in a room talking to people. But what people. Mr Fincher has totally nailed the casting, heaven knows how.
    His 'groundbreaking', long rehearsal periods followed by precise multiple takes has truly shown what is possible when the TV show is director driven and not, producer/network/sponsor driven. Unlike thousands of TV directors and producers over the decades, Mr Fincher has loaded up a Mack truck with minimalism and driven it, full speed, through the walls of TV Land. Why is it so good? Because so much work goes into that minimalism.
    Sadly, I binge-watched 2 seasons, now I feel like three good friends have gone away for a year... I miss them, and, the brilliantly portrayed killers. Cheers, BH.
    P.S. I have to mention the show's only deliberate gag: When Holden Ford is at an airport he tells the ticketing agent that Holden Ford really is his name and it's only a joke, in Australia. This is because Holden and Ford are the two major car manufacturers here and have such fierce competition that they would never be mentioned in the same sentence, let alone someone's name. I'm willing to bet that line came from the Australian actress, Anna Torv, one of the leads.

    This show does Show not Tell. It's about how the unit was formed and how they got their information from interviewing serial killers and that's what is shown. It's not about what the killer did or how they were caught, it's about how the FBI talked to them to understand them.
    This show does Show Don't Tell perfectly.

    One thing I love about the show is how in every interview you get a glimpse into their triggering points. Every serial killer has a trigger point as explained early in the show and each killer interviewed showed. The Candy Man's boy who lashed out when questioned on his homosexuality, Richard Speck threw the bird in the fan when asked about compassion, Manson being called a midget (He hated being made to look small) and watching the show back i noticed almost every interviewed showed this and it resulted in either a lash out or the interview be cut short. Brilliant script writing, i don't think any show can beat that feeling when a new serial killer is being interviewed ☺ don't make us wait long for Season 3 please!

      Not just the killers, but all the lead characters themselves. The psychology of the characters and how it influences the interviews as well as their work in deciphering the serial killer psychology is a huge point in the show

    I find a lot of truth in the thought that when you zoom in too closely to something, anything, that the sense behind it all but evaporates. To me, it's like close reading or micro-reading where you analyze a paragraph literally word by word, trying to dissect the meaning of every letter (or every aspect of this film) only even more intensive. To one of the most extremes examples... It's like saying "red" one hundred times, spelling it out loud one hundred times, thinking about the way the words and letters feels on your tongue, only to sit down and write an analysis of the experience. The word, the letters, they lose all meaning, all sense of purpose, and it becomes non-sensical, and the meaning of consciousness and life and existence is called into question because... red. Also apparently red sounds a lot like ribbet, the sound a frog makes.

    The "Show, Don't tell" motto to be more exact is "show, don't explicitly tell what you are trying to express to an audience." While Mindhunters has a lot of dialogue, they aren't violating that rule. The murders are not the point. The character study from the dialogue is. What is in between the lines. I thought that was obvious. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    Trying to make a point about why it works when it supposedly shouldn't is a false start because it is doing exactly what it needs to do, showing character.

    • @notaspeck6104
      @notaspeck6104 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think we forget that dialogue is a tool as well, it doesn't have to be a necessity and using a lot of it doesn't mean boring exposition all the time. My favourite example of that in this show is the scene where Holden is talking to the shoe guy, and you slowly realise that he's so deluded he's separated his crime from himself, but is in some way subconsciously aware that he is in fact the murderer. The dialogue there is so good and well acted, and imo it's still show don't tell even though they are literally telling you what happened.

  • @themonsterbaby

    I've researched serial killers since I was a teenager, don't ask why..... just always been fascinated by them and how they become who they are. How cute little smiling babies can grow up to eventually become human butchers. But anyway, Mindhunter is the most realistic portrayal of serial killers I've ever seen. Ed Kemper and Charles Manson's characters are particularly well done. This show needs to come back. The 80s just has so many good subjects, the green river murders were occurring, there were Bundy interviews done, Gacy interviews. We also need the BLK story to continue and eventually come to an end. The sunset murders occurred in the 80s. And if they go into the 90s then we can possibly see how they assisted in the mother of all serial killer cases, Luis Garavito! 140 confirmed murders of young boys with the tally possibly reaching over 300. And he's actually scheduled to be released soon.....smfh.
