- We borrowed this donkey for a live Christmas nativity and noticed his feet were a little over due for a trim. This video is how we went about getting his feet trimmed and balanced up. He did great in the nativity set and loved all the attention. Thanks for watching! Leave a comment and let us know what you think. Check out our channel for other good farrier related videos!

He’s like: snack time

Watch The Hoof GP, he trims cow's feet.
I didn't think it would be as intricate as it is. He makes some great saves.
You show watch cows get their hooves trimmed it oddly relaxing
I was like "Holy crap, is he taking the whole hoof off???" I can't imagine the relief on that poor donkey's stride now.. :D And the dog comes up "Hey, you umm, you gonna eat that?"
Yea, well it’s just like clipping a long toenail, the hoof base doesn’t really grow all that much, and where the hoof actually is is only a few inches below the start, so all that extra was just like a long toenail, probably felt like trying to walk normal in snowboarding boots for that donkey (look it up, the boots make you bend your knees or it makes it really uncomfortable (for good reason))
I hope you had a stern chat with the owner about their neglect of this donkey. No wonder he loved the attention from you!
His feet looked great when you got done, and donkey had to feel a LOT better. Thank you.
Really,Why do You held an animal if You don't care about him?? Poor Little donkey....
Half of these comments include the word ‘pedicure’

Perfect
Ranger William, I don’t see anything wrong with that, let people do what they want to do and stop complaining
Then there’s this comment about blueberry pancakes. With butter and maple syrup. Mmmmmm.
The owners of that donkey need a lesson on animal care, the poor bugger must have been uncomfortable- maybe in pain. Having hoofs like that is despicable
we helped them out
I am ignorant in the matter of horses. How animals in the wild deal with this type of situation?
If i read correctly the hoofs keep growing ussualy ending in the horse or donkey with a problem in walking and or running
@@PedroPauloAmorim In the wild they wear their hooves down through their natural activity, like how wolves keep their nails from getting long. In a captive environment horses don't get the wear and tear on their foot a wild horse does, making them have longer hooves.
That's neglect. Plain & simple.
I was expecting the little guy to start running around after getting new shoes like little kids do lol
I know! Ungrateful donkey😂😂😂
Sometimes their hooves can be a little sore. Its like getting an ingrown toenail removed, its sore for a few days then it feels 10x better. That donkey was probably having the day of his life once the soreness subsided!
@@nyckie26 good thought! The whole process was soothing to watch but yeah, he probably has to readjust his gait and everything.
Ok, I recant my ungrateful comment.😞😂
They are animals, not kids
When the hoof is deformed like that it also puts strain on the ligaments etc of the legs so when they are trimmed they are often very lame while everything readjusts. Usually you would bring them back over time and not take so much off at once.
The donkey looks like he has been taken care of in every way besides his hooves. I hope the owner can be taught and educated on how important it is to trim his hooves!

A more likely reason than “borrowing a donkey for the nativity” was so that it’s feet could be helped
@@tigress63 its a conspiracy
@@tigress63 donkeys are such intelligent and gentle animals and a lot smarter than a horse. Whereas a horses “flight or fight” instinct will kick in automatically, a donkey will weigh up the situation first to see if it needs to run, so not surprised little donkey was well behaved. Probably really enjoyed the experience too!
@@tigress63 A well behaved horse or donkey doesn't take a week to acclimatize to a new environment lol. I take horses and donkeys all over the place for trail rides, shows, etc and they don't need much time at all. So the answer to 'how many animals in a strange setting will stand still like that' is most of them unless they're unhandled.
@@tigress63 you are fishy

Yeah sure I understand farrier work can be expensive but if you can't afford the upkeep don't have a horse/donkey/whatever.
This man did an excellent job. No doubt the donkey is pleased to walk properly with his trimmed hooves. Thanks for all of you involved in that job.
Imagine how envious the other donkeys where when they saw all the nice treatment he got after being picked for the Christmas thing. Next year they will all line up. 😊

Mr. Devor really, you’re going to be THAT guy in the replies
I understand mistakes in owning animals, but those hooves were no mistake. That is lack of care. That breaks my heart for this animal
Mistake? To get this long, those had to be left like that for CRAZY long time.
@@Marwington Lack of care is common in people who own Equine Species ( Donkeys Horses ECT) most ppl don't know how to take care of them and just don't have skill. So they just let their hooves get like that. But Incredible people like Farriers fix the hooves
@Jeff Holland I have no experience with donkeys. With horses though, 15 cm overgrown hooves is not something that "just happens". But maybe just donkeys have really fast-growing ones. Dunno.
@Jeff Holland Pure out and out neglect, not just lack of care. Donkey may be fed, but those hooves could have ruined his feet. That was way longer growth than just lack of care. Been around horses, mules, and donkeys all of my life, owned an Arabian, and her feet were looked at every 6 months outside routine maintenance.
@Jeff Holland being well cared is not just being fed tho. It's taking care of the general health of the animal you decided to own.
I know nothing about shoeing horses, but I love watching anyone that is skilled at their craft. Thank you for taking care of the donkey.
Now I can only imagine what the donkey is feeling after he’s done
Donkey: Wait a minute....my hooves are supposed to be flat
Probably is in pain muscle and ligament have to stretch go that he is done but still his hoofs were bad
What is amazing is that the donkey never flinched once so it must not have hurt at all! Interesting! What a good job you did for the little guy! I would have liked to see him walk around on his new feet! I hope the owner will be shamed into keeping the little guy's feet in good shape from now on!

Donkeys have the neatest little hooves when they are cared for. Thank you for getting this one back in top shape
Poor guy he’s probably had a lot of trouble with his hoof and also probably felt pain
It’s not something the average person thinks about when it comes to taking care of animals, just how much work goes into feeding, grooming etc. it’s a full time job with one so kudos for all you do for these animals.
Poor little donkey. The owner doesn't care about it enough to get his hooves into a good shape once in a while :( I hope he enjoys this "freedom" until it grows back again
I was thinking the same thing
Owner probably doesn't know.
I’m sure this furrier would do it for free, poor donkey. What other abuse is he getting by the negligent owner. How right that this kindness at Christmas.
How would the owner NOT know that their donkey's feet looked THAT horrible? (They looked bad enough that the owner could be charged with animal cruelty/neglect in some places).
Basic care is part of ownership with ANY animal.
If one cannot properly care for the animal, they should rehome it.
Yeah, this video struck me more as "we made an excuse so we could trim the poor donkey's hooves before any further damage could happen."
This takes me back to growing up on a farm with a mule breeding program. Our dogs would sit there and watch for shavings to fly in their direction until our farrier tossed them a handful of hoof shavings.
The next morning the farm dog would have a stash of hoof trimmings on our back porch.
Those were the days.
glad it brought back memories! the good ol days

What a kind little donkey!
Letting an animals hoof grow out and deform like this is animal cruelty.
Agreed. How long do donkeys go before they need trimming usually? I know horses is usually every 6-8 weeks. Also wondering if he has any deformation internally from lack of care?
Donkey hooves grow faster than horses apparently!
I have a suspicion they borrowed him just to be able to help.

Every time I watch one of your videos, especially if the animal hasn't been worked on in a while. I think, "god that has got to feel good after, like taking off shoes that hurt your feet after too long".
could you possibly make a video explaining hoof anatomy, and how you would generally trim a horse on the first time you meet them. I know that sounds confusing, and i know every horse is different but could you share some general techniques that you commonly use.
Piper Grets I was just wondering if there is any trust built prior to this and I agree with the hood anatomy request. I stumbled upon one of the videos and this is my 4th or 5th tonight.
Piper Grets a hoof should always be at a 45 degree angle. Typically you clean out the frog or inside of the hoof but these are so massively overgrown he had to cut them first.
I'm interested. I didn't know this was a thing as I'm sure many others that are suggested this video feels. It didn't even look "humane" at first but I understand the necessity. But like, I need you to add some biology to these videos lol
It's just like a nail, sometimes it might hurt if you cut a nail wrong but usually it feels fine.
The fact that someone thinks they “own” an animal and leave them like this is despicable
The real dumb-ass is the owner.
"Look at my new kicks I got for Christmas! They're so fresh and so clean! Watch me 4 step! Stunna!"
Of all the creatures I was ever charged with caring for, a donkey has always been one of my favorites, if not the most favorite. The amount of love and affection these creatures can demonstrate towards those who care for them is incalculable. If people were smart, they would have donkeys, instead of dogs and cats.
It is satisfying to watch this. Gives some sort of peace. Its like with this small act (compared to the size of the world) everything everywhere becomes just a littlebit better.

glad you liked it
From an email sent to friends: A person with hoof trimming skills was part of an effort to borrow a donkey, who would enact the donkeys part in helping Christ and Mary, in a Christmas play. This descendant of the original donkeys needed some hoof work. It waited, very patiently, for the care taken to fix its feet. One by one, the basic care got done.
It also reminded me that everyone has important things to contribute to life, there is no "useless" skill or person. They may cook, smile, create crops starting from neglected earth, or whatever it is, but the participation of each one of us makes the world work.
