    I’m so glad to see the horse’s pain reduced. But I would appreciate some explanation. What is wrong in a foundered foot? How does the big block help this? Why choose the materials and shape of the block? What will happen next for this horse? Will it heal?

    • @auntvivienne8669
      @auntvivienne8669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I’m not a professional at all, but from my understanding, the problem with this horse’s hooves is that they’re shaped in a way that causes too much tension in the tendons at the back of the leg and the blocks are redirecting the weight forward. Think of it like the downward dog pose in yoga. It can be painful for your calves but as soon as you break the pose by lifting your heels off the ground, the pain stops since you’re not overextending your tendons and muscles anymore. Same concept here. And will it heal? Over time, I think it will. Without the ground wearing down the “heel” of the hoof, if you will, the farrier should be able to bring the shape of the hoof to what it should be.

    • @catherinehubbard1167
      @catherinehubbard1167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@auntvivienne8669 Thank you for this information. Now I can better understand what is happening with this horse. I had been wondering why wood was used. From watching cow hoof trimming videos, I know that those trimmers sometimes choose a wood block rather than a longer lasting plastic one so that it will naturally wear down to nothing over a few weeks. I’m guessing that the same is intended with this horse hoof block. As you say, the stressed tendons can slowly extend to a normal length over time. I hope that by the time the block wears away, the tendons have normalized and the horse will be pain-free.

    • @jennijohnson2927
      @jennijohnson2927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Inside the horses hoof is a pedal ( pronounced pee dahl) or coffin bone... The pedal bone is suspended on a thin laminate or hammock, which depends on a good blood supply to keep it healthy. When that blood supply is interupted or the flow is not good, the laminate become inflamed and swollen which in turn, causes the floaty pedal bone to move in the wrong direction. Both the inflammation of laminae and rotation of the pedal bone is what causes so much pain that they prefer to not walk, hold their feet up, often alternating legs, or lie down for long periods of time(which causes other issues). In severe cases, or untreated cases, the pedal bone will actually break through the sole of the hoof, in which case, most are then euthanized. There are different attributes to why some horses founder (aka equine laminitis) while others in the very same environment do not. I think it's absolutely wonderful to see someone working outside the box!

    • @JavierBonillaC
      @JavierBonillaC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The third explanation here about laminitis is what I used to know. The one from Aunt Viviane makes no sense and has nothing to do with foundering. Still nobody knows why the shoes work or how.

    How on earth did you determine the different thicknesses of material under each foot and the slope you created for each clog? Surely this was science and not guessing! It is also interesting that each clog has a quite a different thicknesses and shape to the other. If this really works, without creating more/different damage then it is truly amazing. Can you make another video explaining why you made the clogs the way you did? It’s absolutely fascinating!

    I'm thinking she had bad, bilateral rotation of the coffin bones, possibly from foundering. Lifting the heels to put the coffin bones back into the correct alignment and giving her good, cushioned but supportive surfaces on her feet helped take away the pain. But I'm intrigued about how high you had her set up, unless it is just because that's the (wooden) material characteristics? Did you have to do this to her hind feet too? I couldn't tell very well. Wonderful to see her walk normally again.

      This horse does have severe rotation. The toe first landing is because the heels had been trimmed off prior to us seeing the horse. It is a fairly common scenario.So yes, the issue does involve the deep flexor tendon.

      Founder, probably rotated coffin bone pressing in the front of a thinned sole. The blue stuff (dental impression material?) allows the weight to be carried by the heel/bars/ frog while the rim pad provides space for the front sole to not be weight-bearing, transferring the forward pressure to the hoof wall. The wedge pads give relief to the tendons, and the angle of the ground surface gives and easier break-over. - How'd I do?

    • @weberequine5086

      It is a metabolic issue

    • @surestar74
      @surestar74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The last bone of a horses leg is called the coffin bone. The coffin bone is a triangle shaped bone inside the horses hoof. If that bone begins rotate it is very painful for the horse and it's called "Founder". Founder is complex, some are unlucky and are more prone to founder. Founder can be caused by too high of sugar levels in the horses blood (kinda like type 2 diabetes in humans). The elevated sugars cause the insides of horses feet to swell and contract, this reduces blood flow to different parts of the hoof anatomy and causes rotation or changes to the coffin bone.

      Look up laminitis, commonly known as founder. It’s a common problem with equines (unfortunately).

    That horse was walking on tippie-toes when we first saw him/her.

    Great work but I am not sure wooden ply will work for long time,
    Just a thought can we use teflon sheet in place of wooden ply

      A horse needs new shoes fairly often. Say every 6 weeks. With a medical case like this, they would be making new supports and adjustments even more often.

    Why could she not walk without your special whatever you call it? Smart of you to figure out the shoes for her just the same. 💯👍😎

      Laminitis, it can cause severe foot pain.
      It can be caused by a lot of sugary foods/grass and can also be a chronic condition.

    Looks like padded Walking Horse feet, but for a much better reason.

    Out of curiosity: I get that there is less pressure to the toe now, but why the forward tilt/high heels? The improvement is insane btw!!

      To reposition the coffin bone and relieve pressure on the hoof sole, is my guess. :)

    This video left me wondering why I watched it as I had no idea what was happening.

    Will it fix the issue or will it be a life long condition?
