DIY Viral Tik Tok Cider Overalls // they're crazy easy to make yourself!

- It seems like every other ad on my Tik Tok feed is for those cute floral overalls from Cider. But after some investigation, I found they A) were made out of polyester and that's not my favorite fabric, and B) they don't look too complicated and I think I can sew them myself. Lo and behold, they were just a pair of shorts with a bib and some straps! So now it's your turn to try to make your own fancy jumpsuit.
Do you need some fabric for your project?

Having made lots of overalls...line the bib with a fun fabric. That way if you are doing the cool rebel girl vibe with one side undone, there's something cute (or subversive) peeking out...also easier than doing the double fold edges on the 3 sides)
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA!!! Without a lining the bib feels a little flimsy but this would sure it up a lot AND give a cool peek of something if, like you said, you wanted to leave one strap unfastened. Great idea!!!
those are my curtains! You showed the fabric and I did a double take. I've had 1 panel pair for years - and have been SEARCHING for the matching pattern for my other living room window. Now - I have an excuse to buy a new set of curtains and make overalls out of the current pair!
YESYESYES!! Upgrade and use the old one for something cool (like overalls)! I'm definitely going to make a full length pair as well!
😂I love co inkydinks like this curtain story. Good ending too😊thanks for sharing goodness! We ALL need it. Yep.
Honestly yours are cuter, better made, sustainable, and more versatile than the originals. Well done! I need to whip up a set of these for sure.
Thank you! I'm excited to try making them out of many types of fabric to see how they turn out. I definitely recommend them!
Okay, hear me out, make the back wrapable to the front with a tie. Like split skirts. That way you can make them as tight as you like on the day and have a singed in look from the front if wanted. Would work well with flowy fabrics. I’m currently converting a pattern to do just that.
That would be super interesting!! And with flowy, lighter fabrics it would look quite a bit different and you wouldn't need to learn a bunch of new skills! I love that!
I have a very fluctuating body due to health stuff so wrap over alls could be super good for me. Just another project to add to my never ending list.
these are tooo cute! suggestion: for the fiddley ends of the straps--make the buttonhole on the bib front instead of on the straps, then sew the button to the strap, this is easier to fit and the strap end can be cut off so it's not flapping around. ps, I always pin the bib to the waistband and have a fitting at that stage to check the bib width and length of the bib because sometimes that is a problem, I also line the bib with soft fabric like someone suggested, which helps make the buttonhole stronger too.
All great suggestions! Thank you!
The half elastic waistband is GENIUS! And I completely understood what you were saying about the outer pockets being less droopy than inset pockets. Great project!
YES!! Inside pockets stretch the leg fabric and make it look all droopy. If outside pockets stretch out too much, they can easily be replaced without making whole new shorts!
Adorable!! One suggestion, if you put the button holes on the bib and the buttons on the straps, you can add 2 or 3 buttons to adjust the overall fit and the extras flappy strap part tucks in behind the bib. I have a pair of overalls that I made that way and it works really well for me.
Thank you for sharing your makes video! I’m a new fan!!
I thought about doing that but the straps ended up being exactly the right length this time. If I make them too long on the next go round, the extra flappy bits will definitely be in the back rather than the front.
The front pockets are brilliant.
I love this! I don’t sew at all but love hearing about your process in putting it together
Oh no! Another thing to add to my list of projects to make. I love these. Thanks.
Best of luck on your adventure through your project pile, and I hope these turn out for you as well as they did for me!
An invisible zipper on overalls? Your version makes way more sense!
THANK YOU!! I feel like a side zip on overalls is just asking for trouble and too much exposure 😳
Very cool! Great fabric choice. So much better than poly.
Completely agreed! I think my whole wardrobe is going to be overalls now!
Just found your channel and I am so glad I did. I am a clothing upcycler, and love this idea. I will be trying it out on some men's western shirts I was gifted. Can't wait to binge watch your channel for more ideas.
OOOH western shirts would be so cool!!!
Great inspiration! I have a favorite overall pattern (hacked up the Helen’s closet Yantas) but I wanted to switch it up. I’ll use my palazzo pants pattern and make a bib! 👍👍👍
I think palazzo-overalls would be so stinking cute and comfortable!
Thank you for this. I saw this add today and wanted them. But now that I know they are polyester. I will make them myself. 😊 one day.
Someone did say Cider has some cotton versions but probably not in the floral patterns. Glad you enjoyed this and best of luck if you try it yourself!
your version is so much more beautiful....I wished I could make something like that....
You can absolutely do it! It may not be perfect the first, second, or third times, but you could definitely make them!
Awesome job. Very cute, love that they are cotton. Regards Helen
Thank you! 😊
Place button holes on the bib and buttons on the straps. Well executed and super cute.
From the back, they remind me of leiderhosen!! Very cute, 10/10 would purchase if they were at a store. :-)
I thought of that too, and I'm totally happy with it!! I can't wait to make another set very soon!
They're adorable!
So stinking cute! I want to make some overalls so badly!
This is your chance!! You can do it!!
These are suuuuuper cute! 🤩
I was just watching a video on drafting coveralls ( jumpsuits?) and she said that it's important to leave the crotch a bit longer so they wouldn't pull when you lift your arms. I assume that is a good idea on overalls too.
Yours are super cute, I love the print.
I completely agree with this. When I made my pattern, I lengthened the rise quite a bit. This worked well for the overalls, and leaves me enough room to fold it down for the waistband when I make shorts/pants
So cute! I do wear synthetic clothing but I would not want polyester overalls. Cotton is the way to go!
Absolutely! And many cotton curtain panels are made from really nice broadcloth! I can't wait to make another pair!
Love how it turned out!
They look fantastic. So damn cute and amazing fabric choice x
Thank you so much! I was surprised how easy they were to put together!
I'm in love!!! 😍😍😍😍 Those are so stinking cute!!!
Ooooh they are super cute and the cut works so well with the fabric! Also POCKETSESSS!!
I finally remembered to add ALL the pockets!
Brilliant! They are beautiful and thank you so much for sharing with us! remember to breathe......
Those are super cute and they look so comfy!
Excellent job sewing and so cute on you.
Those are stinkin’ cute!
These are adorable!!!!!
Only just come across this video, I happen to have the same dungarees (overalls) from cider and they are my favourite! About 2 weeks ago I made myself 2 pairs one from a pin cord curtain I got one sale and one from a hand printed Indian throw I got from a charity shop. I absolutely love them and intend to make a pair for every day of the week.
I love that you've combined owning the Cider set and making your own! I too want to make some for every day of the week! 🤣
A suggestion: You could've put the buttons on the inside of the front rather than having the extra strap bites showing.
Either way, those are so cute!! 😍
So stinking cute! They look fantastic! Really professional and the print is fabulous xx
Thank you! I love them and will probably make a bunch of sets, especially in full pants!
So cute! Good job!
So cute!
I recognized my curtains and had to click on this 😂 I'm like, 'no way'!
🤣🤣 they're ready for their next life as your new overalls!
@@KatieMakesStuff Lol 😆 love your creativity
Love the over alls. So cute and they fit you well. Nice job!
Thank you so much! I really love them!
These turned out so cute.
I think so too! I can't wait to make a full length pair as well!
I love these!
I hate plastic clothing, and that is the reason I started sewing my own clothes.
Me too!
100%!! I have so much more control over the quality, and if it's bad, I only have myself to blame.
Cute cute!! Good job!
Thank you! 😊
They are beautiful ❤
Very cute! Need to try this ❤
So Cute!!!❤
Gorgeous.
Really cute!!!
Outside pockets. Great idea. Made perfect sense. Gonna give this a try myself!
Yay! Good luck!
Those are really cute ❤
Ver nice they look comfy.
Super cute. I don't wear shorts, but I cold see them as capri length or even long let, but no big legs.
I'm definitely making a set with full length wide legs and I'm pretty sure I'll never take them off.
Those are so stinkin' cute! You did a great job. I may buy a 2nd hand sheet and try these...Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely do!! They are so fun and pretty dang easy!
I actually bought a pair, and they are adorable and comfortable. They also have the elastic in the back. To have them in cotton would be awesome though. Shockingly, the clothing i have gotten from Cider has been super well made! It's not flimsy material (I bought cotton denim overalls that are SUER durable). Cider is great if you want cute stuff but don't have the time/space/ability to make something.
I love that you can vouch for them!! Anytime I see something pushed on tik tok as much as these have been always makes me skeptical, but this makes me feel better about maybe buying something from them in the future!
@KatieMakesStuff I was skeptical too until a coworker said she had some of their items, which I had commented on before, not knowing. So once she said that I gave it a try, and I was honestly very pleased with it all! I actually wear the denim overall shorts almost every day lol. And my strawberry corduroy overalls get more compliments than anything else I've ever worn. Go figure!!
It’s great that you’re pleased with the quality but it’s still important to consider who is making those clothes and whether they are getting paid appropriately
@adanice49 oh for Pete's sake. Don't be elitist. It's wonderful that you can afford hand made, single sourced clothing options. Not all of us have the financial resources to do so. So please kindly back off and don't assume.
These are adorable! I’m new here. I need to look at prior videos. I want to learn how to make my own patterns.
You did a beautiful job ❤❤
Thank you! 😊
So cute.
This turned out great! I had cut out a pair of shorts overalls almost 2 years ago and still haven’t sewed it together. 😂 I need to pull it out and get it finished. Too bad it’s not floral print. Love that look.
OOOH, finish those shorts and add a bib and some straps! Brand new outfit waiting for you!
Super cute. Have to make some for my girlies
You should, that would be so cute!
They’re so cute! But I could only look at your kitty! 😊
He thinks he's super fierce, but he's such a sweetheart
Adorable
Gorgeous ❤
Thank you so much!
So cute. I’ve got some pajama pants the might just work.
That's a great idea! I'd recommend making sure the rise is pretty high so you don't get wedgies 🤣
Another great project! ❤from Kansas
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you!
I would've made the whole bib part detachable with buttons inside the back and in the front with four buttons across the front. Double duty shorts too bibs. And attaching straps permanently too the top bib.
I thought about it! My one concern is that the fabric between the button may pull up and look weird, kind of like a button down shirt that's just a smidge too small. But it's certainly worth a try
Very cute 🤗💖👍
I'm blessed up top = so I'm going to try putting darts on each side of the bib :)
That's a great idea!! And by making the shorts and bib separately, it's easier to just fiddle with the top without messing with the fit of the shorts.
I love your videos! I love that you are an actual real person unlike some of the creators who have manufactured every aspect of what we see. I’d much rather see your creativity and really sarcastic side. 😁 I dig it! Great dungarees, btw. That print is so cool. 👍👍
Thank you so much! While I enjoy some of the sewing channels with high production, I'm with you that I want to see real people with real reactions trying to make things. Give me sarcasm and curse words any day!!
@@KatieMakesStuff
Fuck YEAH!!😁
Well, you’ll probably start seeing a lot of comments from me. I promise I’m not a stalker, I’m just new to your channel so I’ve started binge watching your vids.
I do all sorts of crafts and painting and such and I’ve wanted to start making videos for years. I’ve just been very discouraged watching these young, beautiful, perfectly styled creators with all the slick production. I’m such a perfectionist that I started expecting that of myself and that’s too overwhelming. Your style is so much better and much more relatable. Your channel is giving me that nudge to just do it for myself and fuck ‘em if they can’t take a joke!😂👍
Anyway, thanks for your content. I really do love it. ❤️❤️👍👏😁
My husband likes to say "there's an ass for every seat" so chances are good that your style will relate to plenty of people. My one piece of TH-cam advice is make sure the audio is good. Viewers will forgive lower video quality, but if the audio is off, it's difficult to stick around. Don't let perfectly styled crafters intimidate you; we trash goblins need people to watch too!
@@KatieMakesStuff
OMG, TRASH GOBLINS!! Bahahahaha!!😂🤣👏
I’ve seriously never heard a more apt title than “Trash Goblin”.😁👍🤣 I literally collect so much of my recycling to use in crafting. I’ve made sooo many things out of complete trash. It drives my husband nuts but I keep telling him he’s got to trust the process. 😂🤣
Thanks for the tip about the audio. You’re absolutely right. If I can’t hear what someone is saying or there’s a truly obnoxious stock song in the background, I’m OUT! I think I’m going to end up doing voice overs. I’ve been told I’m a bit of a mumbler, particularly when I’m talking to myself. 😑🤷♀️
So cute! I'm a huge fan of overalls.
One question. Do you have to unbutton the straps to take them off... as in go to the bathroom? Looks like the straps will slide off your shoulders, but that is something to consider.
I have a stash of decorator/outdoor remnants, I used to work at Joann's and I'm all about "end of bolt." When I saw your fabric selection I realized the outdoor fabrics are petfect for this. I wear them for yard work, about mid-calf length. They are short enough to keep out of the dirt, but long enough to protect my knees when I'm kneeling. The waterproofing protects against grass stains and mud. Genius!
First time viewer here. I'll be checking out your other videos.
Jan
I prefer placing the buttons on the strap and the buttonholes on the front piece.
Have you found any benefits from this or it's just personal preference?
Very nice
Thank you! I love them!
If someone is looking for a free base pattern to modify Mood has the Liv pant that might work
Great suggestion! I'll check it out myself!
hey i had those curtains!
Sounds like you could also have these overalls 🤣
Okay but what to do if you can't find shorts to copy that fit you and that you like...?! This suggestion is so common and so frustrating. The overalls turned out really nicely but I wish there were some suggestions of where to find these mystical shorts of my dreams.
If the shorts pattern you're working with calls for a zipper, how do you adjust the pattern to be elastic back?
If the hip to waist section is angled in, I would take it straight up from the widest part of the hip on all pattern pieces. Do a mock-up without a waistband to make sure you can get it on and you should be good to add the waistband and elastic. Without seeing the pattern this is what makes the most sense to me
How did you do the sides on the bib? Turn them over 1/4” and stitch?
Yep, I serged the edges then turn them in about half an inch and stitched down.
Shape of the top of the overalls: trapezoid?
TRAPEZOID!! THAT'S IT! Thank you, that has been bothering me for days!
I am going to make a pair of these overalls for myself. I did look at the website but had an instant problem with the length. I'm a tall girl and have long legs. Cider's so called long is still too short for 6'0" girls like me.
I bet that's a problem everywhere! Good news, if you make them yourself you can control everything!
So, I'm not the only one the Universe smacks down when I get overly confident!
Will you have a pattern available? If so where? I don't sew much at all anymore but I think my granddaughter would like these.
I'm not a good pattern maker, but I'll look for some free patterns to use as a base for the pants/shorts. That may help quite a bit!
@@KatieMakesStuff thank you, one of your viewers suggested Mood's Liv pattern, which is free, so I down loaded it. I think it will work with some modifications! You have such talent to be able to create clothing the way you do. I have trouble even when I have a pattern, lol!
How easy is it to do the elastic that way? I've seen people do it, but no one explain it??
I think it's pretty easy. I leave an opening on both ends of the back waistband, thread it through from one side to the other pinning along the way, then stitch it down on each side. I'm not sure that's a good explanation but I hope it helps a little.
Wow! You did those off the top of your head? Can you make us a pattern, please? Lol 😅
I'm not sure I have the confidence to make a pattern for it BUT I can look for some free patterns that would make a good base to start with!
They look so good ....the only thing I’d change is the placement of the back pockets. I’d drop them down so they hug your bum 😊
Yeah, I totally guessed on the placement of those before seeing the shorts together. Next time I want to drop them down just a bit!
Do you mind turning Off the music when you Talk, please👂🏼👂🏼👂🏼
It's a trapezoid.
THANK YOU!!
Put the straps on the inside of the bib... Next time.
100% next time!
❤️🩷💜
Cider is also a dropshipper biz so that's how they can price things so low, we have no idea the conditions the garments are made in.
Oh man, I didn't know that!! But now that you say it, it makes sense. Even more reason to make your own!
Cute look, but I'll never ever wear overalls or any other form of onesie. Takes just too much effort to just pee, having to basically undress to do so.
Same thing for those cute wrap shorts and pants....you have to keep them off the floor and totally take them off to pee!
Down with unfunctional fashion.
I can certainly appreciate your sentiment. I'm too much of an overalls/jumpsuit lover to get rid of them, but I do have to plan my restroom breaks strategically 😂
I own some of the original fabric, it's like $15 and it is a tapestry fabric! The stiff you see on Cider is literally ripped from decent fabric :/
Edited for clarity, my bad
Where did you get the fabric from?
I was wondering about their fabric choice and thought they probably took someone else's design. I hate that it was from you! Do you have a link for your fabric? I'd be happy to share it in the description if the real thing is available and you benefit from sales.
@KatieMakesStuff sorry - let me clarify, it wasn't from me! I just have some of the original stuff. I found it in an Aussie fabric store called Spotlight, it's sold there as "Georgie Tapestry Fabric". Checking their pricing, originally its 30AUD a metre
I'm distracted by how beautiful your teeth are
Well thank you! I appreciate that!
They were super hateful to a plus size content creator, so another good reason to avoid that company.
I didn't know that; how retched! In that case, I'm thrilled to offer an alternative to shopping with them!
@KatieMakesStuff Right?!?! I SO appreciate this! I'm off to find some pretty linen and have a go at it! Thank you!
@@KatieMakesStuff
So cute!
