The Zinc Plating you did is very clever. We'll done. My legs aren't near as bad, just some scoring on the 1st few inches of travel, so after watching this video, I feel confident that I can salvage mine and get some riding in this Spring and Summer. Thank you.

I got some buffing discs that go on a drill along with some different grit "clay" and applied it to my forks. What a difference! A lot of time the older bikes either have old clear coat that has yellowed due to UV or some say it is the anodizing process. At either rate, I strip it off with acetone and 0000 steel wool and buff it with the pads and clay. Great video!
Absolutely fantastic and so well presented! Thank you. 30mins ago I was considering buying a new chromium fork for my m/c as I just replaced the seals and whilst assembling the last one I inadvertently damaged the surface (near the oil seal) and created a dipple which I sanded the burs off so it wouldn't damage the seals but of course I still have the dipple which now I will try applying a spot of steel epoxy and sand down to a lovely smooth finish - okay, that's the idea :) Anyway, thanks again
Dude hell yeah I like this guys style this is what tinkers and fixing is all about but if science compounds and cool resto project loved this video thanks man !!
Excellent video thank you, it's given me the confidence to try myself on a Suzuki RV125 Van Van fork stanchion - I tried new seals first but they did not stop the leak. The sanding is now complete, rubbing compound next then to pound store for cheap batteries - most other shops only seem to stock Alkaline now.
Man one and only video on TH-cam and the unique video. And I have a question how efficient is this, after everything. Does the oil seal will broke of lose areas
Hoooola..!!! Realmente quede impresionado con el proceso, podrias explicarmelo por aqui, para poder traducirlo, ya q no hablo y no entiendo el ingles 😅😅 muchas gracias... Y que genial, es justo lo q andaba buscando
An extremely good product to prevent rust in the first place, is "Corrosion-X". It binds magnetically to metal, almost on an atomic level, and is therefore very resistant to pressure and heat. I've started using this on all different kinds of things - fork legs, brake caliper pistons, bolts and nuts, tools, exhaust, etc. I can highly recommend that product.
It's been quite a while since the most recent previous comment, so, I hope you are doing well. Great video, I will be using this technique. I have a couple of questions. First, why did you choose nail polish after proving superglue was stronger? My second question is about other fork repair techniques. Have you ever repaired a vintage motorcycle fork slider by separating the cast parts and replacing the outer tube? Sorry, if my first question was previously answered, but no time to read all the comments.
Hi, you need to wrap positive wire around zinc battery and also fix with it the cotton pad negative connecting to the part, also you will need to prepare acid electrolyte (or can use phosphoric acid that are used for soldering) infuse the cotton pad and with light non-stop no pressure movements wipe along the damaged part until zinc will coat it all. After you finished you will need to degrease the fork or wash it with a mix of water with baking soda to stop the acid reaction.
I've just done a set of yamaha SR250 forks, now I know how to fill the pit marks untill the customer can afford to re chrome, thanks for sharing man. 👍 and I've subscribed...
Hi Andrew, In the video at 6:32 on a half fork I used nail polish, on the other half I used super glue, I used both of them to show that after smoothing it out the difference between them will be almost invisible. BUT super glue and nail polish is the most budget that you can do if there is no money to buy an epoxy glue, the best filler from what I tried are "Novol termo epoxy putty" This video it's a step-by-step guide where I'm showing all the methods how it can be done, and this fork tube I used just as a testing part to show the process. In the preview at the end of the video, you can see that in the next video I will restore the forks for my "Two-Stroke Dream" project, and there I will use epoxy glue. I hope I clearly explained, If there are more questions, ask more, I will try to help.
Very helpful video for restoring vintage forks in a budget. But will it sustain the changing mood of mother nature(rain, heat, moisture)?, just for my knowledge.
Hi Tarun, for my forks I used Novol termo epoxy putty as a filler, I tested it and it's very resistant, and also it have a very good mechanical strength
@@anything_vintage77 Yes it does, after zinc plating don't forget to wash the part with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to stop the reaction of the acids used for electroplating
Thanks for this great video. Full of valuable tips for cheapskate like me😂. One thing that bugging me though. That phone charger for power supply is mad sketchy. Are those open wire and metal you connected to it not gonna zap you?. i have PTSD because I have been zapped once by a phone charger. Other than that very informative, just prop to you brother. 🙏
will the next video be out soon? I'm interested to watch as I would love to do this on my 1977 cr125 forks rather then forking out the $600 plus hours of driving each way plus weeks of waiting to get them rechromed at the specialists, interesting video!
Awesome vid. Great tutorial especially if the damage of the telescopic fork is small. Btw. I have to ask. Do you have to empty/drain the battery? Or just rip it after buying it from the store? Im just scared it might explode. Thank youu. 😊
Hi, thank you for the comment, it really doesn't matter, usually, I don't drain the battery, the most important is to use a zinc battery not alkaline, and after zinc plating don't forget to degrease the fork or wash it with a mix of water+baking soda to stop the acid reaction. Good luck and thank you for watching!
Столько работы, можно было запаять эту поврежденную область твердым припоем с флюсом, с помощью газовой горелки. А потом обработать в нужный размер. Маленькие повреждения я так ремонтировал.
i dont have a deep pitting but still want to use a bit of zinc to cover up the open pores to prevent it from rusting again. do i just need to splice the 5v dc charger and use the black and red wires from it to do this procedure using a carbon zinc battery ? any help appreicated.
Hi Alinel, yes, you can use a charger or just connect 2 wires to a simple battery 1.5v, the process will be slower but it also works well, and after zinc plating don't forget to deactivate the acid that is used for plating, for that you can wash your fork with water with baking soda or use a good degreaser.
