Excellent review Alan! Love it! Those lenses turned out so wonderful. Im very happy for you. You deserve it! Thanks again for all you do for the filmmaking community.
Hello my friend, im getting the 37-58-85-135 kit from them (With no fake anamorphic flares and amber interior) and I was wondering what is the front diameter step up they put to their kits, for a vnd filter and other? (I have a 77mm bpm, vnd set and was wondering if they could fit the whole range). For sure it wont fit the mir20 if i get that one. Thanks for convincing me to buy their kits, i'm way too excited to get the whole bunch to try out!
Is it normal to have a complete color cast of amber when using the lenses wide open, i have to close them up quite a bit to get a normal image? I have the complete set with amber oval discs without fake anamorphic and the color cast is very apparent.
Juan Tornini the colour cast is kind of the point these colour mods, though the cast is more apparent when you have direct lighting that hits the lens and lights up all that colour inside.
So, here´s my rant about this company. I reached them out about creating a set after watching your video.... then, as I was surfing over their Instagram I realized that they are "coming up with a cine version", so I thought this might just be better for my investment, assuming maybe it's a rehousing of some sort, or dedicated permanent modifications to the lenses, other than plastic ovals between elements.... I reached out to them and all I got was a clipped, poorly translated message stating "yes we are working"... so? Won't they share some information with a potential customer? So, I replied to their message asking for more information but I have not received anything.......I was using their website to build a 3000 dollars set, but now I'm not so sure... Sad because I can tell that the founder is very passionate about his job and tries to do the best he can. Great video, Alan, your content is always great and I enjoy watching it.
Hey man. Thanks for taking the time to write such an in-depth comment. The "cine version" is the project I was talking about in my video ;) but since this project is still in development, it's too early for IronGlass to provide any solid info. All I can personally say is that even though these will be permanent modifications, it will also be a completely different price point, so unless you are ready to spend more, there is probably no point holding out for the next product.
VintageLensesForVideo thanks for answering man. Yes I am willing to wait for a while and see what they come up to, although it would have been nice to get more feedback, maybe to even pre-order the stuff. Anyways I will wait to see with what they come up to. Please ask them to deliver better customer service, as the answer you gave me is what I would expect from any company.
César Martínez, I agree with you. The customer service could be improved. I ordered a lens, and haven't heard back from them after emailing the order number, etc., no updates on shipping...
Hey, Thank you for the review There footage looks epic... Quick question I'm not interested in the fake anamorphic, or the oval bokeh. Am I right in saying the Amber tinit is in the oval? I love the idea of the Amber tint of course not at the cost of an f stop per lens. Would love more info if you have any
Thanks for sharing. Two questions if I may 1) Can these work in night time city environments since you lose a stop? 2) Can the Aperture be changed? Or is it stuck at a fixed aperture?
It all depends on your camera and the light level. You lose around a stop of light, so if F3.5 to F5.6 is too slow for your low light shooting then, these oval disks might not be the best choice for you. The can be remote though because original aperture stay the same with or without the disk.
Hi I was wondering what you thought would be a good faster alternative for the 20mm-24mm range that will fit well in terms of color match and look with the rest of the lenses in this set?
Hey man, thanks for such a great review! I know these lenses have their ups and downs, but I want to ask you, would you recommend them for cinema style shooting? Let´s say for a feature? I would really like to try them out but the only thing that I´m worried about is they´re not so sharp and I would like to know if it´s not suitable for professional work or if somehow it could be fixed in post. Thanks again man!!
I know you asked the people of the channel but I thought maybe I could give a awnser anyway (I didn't shot a feature yet but a lot of short movies and commercials and I shot with all kinds of lenses in all price ranges)... Those old Helios lenses have a lot of character and look very cinematic in my opinion. You could use them for sure to shoot a feature. If you have a professional film crew they will may not be so happy with the lenses because they are not housed in a proper cine lens body. It makes their job easier if any lens has the same front diameter and same or similar lenght. Those vintage lenses are not the sharpest out there but they are sharp enough if you ask me. If you don't like the creamy vintage look with those crazy bokeh you shouldn't shot with those lenses. Sure you could sharpen the image a little in post but It doesn't make sense to want to fix the characteristic look of those lenses. If you'r going for an sharp and crisp and modern (and you'r on a budget) the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 for example are way better options. They are avalable as mid price foto lenses and also as more expensive and more film crew oriniented cine lenses (image quality is the same).
Marius Dymbe yes, it should work fine, though I never recommend locking yourself into a mirrorless camera mount. PL is much for flexible because you can use it on MFT, EF, PL, E-Mount and other mount cameras via an adapter, but once you get the MFT Mount lens, that is the only camera mount you can use it on
You can't just pay for modifications. Instead, you buy the lens with modifications from IronGlass. They agreed to modify my own lenses because that was the only way I could afford to try them.
david valens as far as I know they don’t offer such service, it was a one off deal, but the best thing to do is to contact me yourself and see what they can do for you.
I have had a hard time receiving answers from Iron Glass via email, curious to hear your thoughts on the quality of the IronGlass PL Set. I have some of these above lenses in m42 that I have used on a bunch of projects, including the feature film Menashe www.Menashefilm.com. My issue is that my lenses are falling apart; the focus rings will pop off, my adapters are not tight enough. The original Mir, Jupiter, Helios lenses are built pretty cheaply. Did Iron Glass do anything to reinforce the construction, or did they just put a screw on follow focus on the top of the original lens? Iron Glass shows a video example of its construction on their website: th-cam.com/video/FjPish5N1B0/w-d-xo.html The silver looks great, but is it just paint? Or did they switch out parts for new metal? Do you find the lenses stronger enough to pull focus with an electronic focus? I am scared that the electronic gears will break apart the lens. Thank you, anything you can add about the construction would be appreciated.
Sorry to say it but the compression and resolution of your final export are way too low for a serious lens review in my opinion. Otherwise you've done a very cool project, thanks for sharing it!
Stappy Thank you for your feedback. As far as compression, I have very little control over that because I exported in best quality for TH-cam, but TH-cam itself of course compresses the video further. As for the resolution, I know that 4K is pretty much the norm nowadays and I try to produce more 4K test video content, but this review isn’t really about the resolution & sharpness of these lenses. It’s about the look these mods add to these lenses, which is why I felt good old 1080p will be perfectly acceptable :)
Yes, it is overpriced if you compared to the 2nd hand market. These prices are included rehousing which means to change the whole housing and modification. If don't mind about housing, all these can be DIY easily for more than half price.
Kelvin ZyTeng if you can it to do this standard yourself, it will of course cost you less (but time is money too). Though it will be very difficult to polish the lenses to this level and making metal focus gears would need very special equipment and skills, so overall I don’t think this set is overpriced at all.
@@alanbesedin sorry, i mean a beside housing, the fake anamorphic part can be done easily. If ppl don't mind about housing, they can do it very cheap. Housing cannot be done own lol. They use CNC recreate a new housing.
$250 for painted $20 helios 44-2 with string on the back? Damn, this is the most glorified bullshit I every saw in the photography world. $100? Meeh, maybe but $250?!? Are you kidding me.

Wow that Mir-20 is a beauty! 😍
Wow. Subscribed. Drooling over those lenses and mods.
I love your lens set... this is AWESOME
That lens set is my dream. Just amazing! Молодцы ребята!
Fantastic Video and awesome lens set.
I have a couple of Ironglass lenses, love 'em. But I really need to get one of the amber versions. Lovely.
Amazing transforming in lenses look !!
Looks prety cool ! I waiting test of it !
Duuuude! That was astonishing 😲!
One of the best channels!
Simply gorgeous look of the lens as well as the images they produce. The orange would match nicely with the Sony A7iii orange ring :-)
