    very jealous EVEN THOUGH I have never filmed a darned thing in my life and 'only' use my vintage collection for snapping still imagery.
    But such beautifully modified vintage lenses are very appealing indeed and the Ironglass mark II upgrades all make sense as a worthwhile investment.

    I have a "broken" Canon FD 85 f1.2L that I paid $200 for because the elements are perfect. Wondering if its worth rehousing as I hate to see such a lens as a doorstop. Any recommendations Mark for a fellow Canadian?

    • @mynam3isnathan
      @mynam3isnathan ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't seen anyone other than the occasional independent shop / project doing FD rehousing other than PS Technik. They don't post rough estimates anymore but a few years ago it was $8-10k as a super general ballpark estimate. Really not an option for certain owner operators though your 85 sounds like a perfect candidate.
      Did some quick research and I think it's still going to be expensive as hell but at least there's a few options (with likely very, very long waitlists). Reddit tells me TLS, Zero Optik, and Whitepoint Optics could be plausible alternatives.

    What is the main reason for re housing these? I love vintage lenses on my old Fuji, but why not just use the lens in its original housing? (Greetings from Vancouver) Thank you:)

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ONLY reason you would do this is if you work in a top tier film/doc production work. The re-housing is almost 100% added functionality for a professional work environment on feature docs, factual docs, narrative film productions. You have crew, big rigs, need consistency and dependability (hard to put 50-60. year old lenses through some of these demands and often times those photo lenses do not have the functionality required for things like wireless focus, matte boxes etc.
      Hope that helps! Bottom line, look at the physical difference between cinema lenses and photo lenses today. What makes these special is you're taking a photo lens and making it work for cinema use while retaining that authentic "vintage look" these lenses are known for.

    I own older silver editions from the Iron Glass Adapters (prior to Mark I). Imreally would like to upgrade them to these Mark II versions. How much did you pay for the whole set when upgrading fro m Mark I?
    Are the focus throw different on every lens or is it constant on all of them?
    Have the internal focusing affacted anyway the breathing of the lenses? Or is it something they can't remove as it is part of lens design?

    • @alanbesedin
      @alanbesedin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Focus throw up a 300 degrees on all lenses.
      The focus breathing is not affected by the internal focus because it’s part of the optical design and rehousing affect optics on such way :)

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How much have you paid in total for the set (without shipping)

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll have to do the math and look at invoices, I started in 2020, and I also sent in my own optics for most lenses so that cut down on the sticker price ultimately. They're offered at an early bird price now of just over $11,000 for 5 lenses. So ball park around there, but less because I bought and sourced my own Helios 40-2, Tair 11a, Mir 10 28, and Mir 20. Shipping was cheap and barely even factors in $60.

      I didn’t, had my oval swapped out for consistency across all lenses but didn’t want to compromise full aperture range as well. Not a fan of fake anamorphic flares so that was never an option for me. Just natural characteristics of each lens. ✊

  • @Nateinthewild
    @Nateinthewild ปีที่แล้ว

    I love this concept, but taking a lens that retails for ~$150 and turning it into a $2,500 lens is a tough sell for me.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya it’s not for everybody as discussed. You need the functionality and work in a tier that can afford that very small investment. There is gear modding etc as a less expensive route, heck the mark I’s are less expensive. The fact of the matter there is a market for it, so just wanted to put out what you can expect. I’ve spoken at length about this generally: the “worth” these lenses fetch on the open market is mainly due to demand and availability. What a lens is worth on the market doesn’t truly dictate its value. But we all have a different definition of value based on our own set of variables and circumstances. These lenses are already paid off after having been used and rented out on the last 5 shoots. Everything else is gravy at this point.
      Look at zero optik turning 900 Leica R’s into $5500 lenses… they have a wait list 18 months long.
      I can see your point though. ✊

    • @Nateinthewild
      @Nateinthewild ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkHoltze Oh yeah totally agree with you. I own several lenses that are significantly more expensive than these even, I just think they face a little *more* of an uphill battle in that these are basically refurbished and repackaged Ebay lenses, marked up over 10x. I totally see the value in it, but I'll be curious to see how many actually sell.

    I wonder if they can do this with my minolta MF lenses?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ancient Optics rehouses minotla but they're not cheap. I would argue don't do it unless you work in a commercial space that can leverage the advantages rehousing brings. They make the lenses much bigger and heavier and harder to use practically as a single shooter so there's that to consider. Modding might be your best bet, but again depends on what you have planned. Ancient Optics Minolta rehoused sets are things dreams are made from lol. Very nice set!

    Nice advert.

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's only an advert if I was paid, or to a lesser extent, got the lenses for free. Both are not true (i wasn't paid and I bought the lenses). Small company, doing work I find valuable so happy to talk positively about it because that's how they make me feel.
      I know youtube has turned into a giant advertising platform, but I don't do this to advertise, I do this to educate and inform, I'm sorry you only saw "advert" behind my efforts, but I wanted to take a second and try to give you my perspective. :)

    $2500 each 😮

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For rehousing like this, that’s a very good price. $4000, $5000 per lens from some of the comp on Leica R’s and those prices do not include the lens.
      If you are buying these one should be working in a market that can pay them off fairly quickly based on jobs. Lots of options out there. :)

    2500$ for 25$ optics? lol

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re buying the rehousing and getting the optics for free. The “$25” optics are being used in some of the biggest films, so shows you how far “$25” optics can go. ;)
