      @@MarkHoltze your videos did a good seeding on me. I appreciate vintages lenses more and want it more actually than any AF lenses available. Currently have some FD lenses, but I’m drooling over some soviet lenses. Bokeh and flares are amazing! Too bad lenses on our area are not well maintained, so it’s quite hard to find a good quality glasses.

    Hi, Mark. I'm another fan of vintage lenses, so it didn't take long for me to discover your channel. I love your videos. They're usually of the right length - not too brief as to leave me wanting for more, not too meandering and dragged-out as to get boring - and I like your humour and style of delivery. Also, the various text animations and transitions are tasteful and well executed. I know, you're a professional in this field so I feel like I'm stating the obvious. But still, I think one always likes to receive feedback that's a bit more detailed than a thumbs-up or a 'great video' comment. I'm definitely subscribing and now I guess I have a bit of material of yours to catch up with, haha. Cheers, and keep up the great work! -Rick

      Hi Riccardo thanks mate, it's weird i've been working in the industry for 20 years but youtube is a completely different beast. I felt like I had to re-learn a bunch of things to apply to this format, it's VERY VERY different. The core is the same, don't waste peoples time if you can, I try to show and give a lot in my videos to ensure that at the very least the craft/lens/info is being demonstrated or communicated. I cut about 3 mins out of this one because I felt like ya, it's just too long and it really impacts the pacing of things.
      Appreciate your feedback and your time mate, all the best in the giveaway if you entered and stay safe out there.

      Thanks Alec, take a look at the 28 as potential option as well. it's got a crazy close MINfocusing distance and while not THAT fast at 3.5 I do feel like you can do more with a lens with a closer focusing distance on a wide angle. My CZ 35mm has a super close min focus and it's got to be one of the most versatile lenses I have.
      But that 37 is golden ,really glad they got the min focusing distance down from the 0.7 meters.

    Nice video - great production quality - like always. Great set of lenses.
    I own these three lenses in their original form and all three are a real pleasure to use - so far you are in vintage lenses (like I am). Over time I sold most of my modern glass and replaced it with vintage lenses. Although modern lenses have reached a stunning level of quality I prefer the unique character and charm of my vintage lenses (with all their deficiencies). Over time I got so much into using a manual focus that I feel a sort of disconnected from the shooting process when auto-focus in the play. Using vintage lenses triggers a lot of positive feelings (on my side) where modern lenses are for me just neutral tools.

      Same story here mate, i only have 3 modern lenses left out of the 7 i had, out of those three i only really use the 24mm L 1.4 EF lens and even that's been cut back since I started shooting these videos full manual.

  • @EMBEVIDEO
    @EMBEVIDEO 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome setup! That mix of modern add-ons and wonderful look of these lenses is unique and a wonderful addition to modern lenses, that are technically perfect, but lost most of their emotions that are transported to the viewer. So most of this footage is changed in post to make it more pleasing. Does that make sense? Sometimes yes - but of it comes to film-like footage, it often is the wrong way. Compare the cost of the complete set to some modern lens... then it is a real bargain.
    Great video - biased in the best way possible. With lots of information and a pleasure to watch ! 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh ya totally freaking bias, but that's why i won't do "sponsored content"...i don't want to talk about stuff I'm not like fully behind. I have a job, i can't turn this into one lol. The thing about perfect lenses is that so much of what DP's often do is drop pro mist in front of them to reduce the clinical sharpness. That's a direct quote from a CSA Cinematographer Ron Sim (went to school with) when I asked him about the legitimacy of vintage lenses in the commercial world at. his level. (he's into them by the way).
      To each their own, it's not about the gear it's about the vision, we do discuss the gear too much on this platform definitely, but I think it's just easier that way than doing video essay's on very subjective type content. I do love that stuff, I could go on and on about even this helo sequence I cut as an exercise in editing 101 but who's going to watch that? lol
      Anyway thanks for being here and adding your contribution. Good luck mate!

      Thanks Jason. The flares are natural to the original lens. No flare mods were added, just the anamorphic bokeh mod which has no impact on flares. You can get those Amber or blue flares with the flare mod tho.

I bought the Helios 44m, very happy but the price of the 40m 85mm is getting more expensive with popularity little bit like the Mir 1 but in reality actually quite cheap compared to new modern lenses. The 44M was what made me fall in love with soviet lenses. I had given it away so the re-housed 44-2 was the next logical choice (since I use these mostly for video)...plus I figured it would make an interesting video as well. Got it, used it, fell i love AGAIN so got the set (mostly because I was convinced on the functionality for my commercial stuff).
      85mm tend to be on the more expensive side, even the older ones. The Tak 85, the Helios 85 etc both fetch quite a price for them online it seems.

    Technical question. I have the same follow focus as you ( tilta) and also a fairly robust tripod (E image G6). However when I pull focus, there especially on close up objects, I always notice that little tiny movement, that little camera shake when I start to pull focus that I can never get rid off. Hey what up bro !
    What do you recomend the cine , or the cine anamorfic.. ?

      I'm a sucker for anamorphic bokeh (oval shape) but I want as clean an image as I can get so opted for no flares. Just my personal preference though. I find doing flares in post give me a bit more control and they're easy to track with aFx. That way on or off, my choice depending on the creative direction we're going for.
      What are you learning towards?

    I know I shouldn't be worried, but it still weirds me out. Is the Mir lens radioactive? I have a Super Takumar 55mm f1.8 that I might get rid of because I can't bring myself to use it much. It's unfortunate because I love vintage lenses. Specifically m42 mount lenses.

    Yo that video was sick with the helicopter Mark. Had a lot of behind enemy lines vibes

      lol, needed something soviet inspired, nothing more soviet than a HIND i don't think. Iconic helicopter, plus so much better than running away from....what else COULD I run away from? lol Thanks Chris!
