    Love it. That's the holy Grill of the Tyco engines I believe been trying to get my hands on one I've got the Silver Streak. Absolutely perfect video as for parts Your Best Bets to use another locomotive for them . Just the horns alone on eBay or 7 Bucks keep up the great work.

    Man I miss the old fashioned hobby shops. nobody carries model trains and accessories around me anymore. Love watching your videos, makes me break out my old trains and start working on my layout again. Thanks for the videos Scrump

      I couldn't agree more, the hobby is changing in unusual ways.I have reverted back to dc simply because dcc is becoming too expensive and to be honest I don't even enjoy it much more, I try to shop at classic hobby shops over the internet and don't buy much high end, brand new in the box stuff. It makes me so happy to hear about people like you coming back to the hobby, I just hope we can all get the hobby on a simpler, more cost effective road.

    Great job getting rid of that annoying squeal! I have an older Spirit of '76 (I believe it's a Tyco) making the same noise. I'll have to get at it and bring it back to life. Now I know how... Thanks Harrison.

    For the comm resurfacing, I did a Bachmann trolley with the similar motor (the old white case). I measured it's starting voltage at 7.5 volts, so it had jack rabbit starts.
    I chucked mine in the drill as you did and started turning it against 400-grit (wet-or-dry paper). I then increased the grit to 600, then 1000, then 1600. It completely got rid of the "waffle weave" pattern from the underlying circuit board substrate. On assembly, the starting voltage dropped to 2.5 volts and gave me excellent low-speed control.

    IIRC the Golden Eagle came out in 76 or 77.
    That was my indicator that Tyco had let quality go to crap ( Lionel supposedly had a similar issue at the time) as I got the GE for my brother for Christmas and played with it like a kid would and the loco was dead by Memorial Day

    • @ericzerkle5214
      @ericzerkle5214 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had Tyco in the very early 1980s and i had one that was a steamer. It literally caught fire on my dads layout!!! They had HORRIBLE quality back then. I ended up going to Athearn and Atlas by the mid 80s and tossed my Tco stuff in the junk... Bachmann back then was just as bad...

    • @JBofBrisbane
      @JBofBrisbane 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gary the Golden Eagle was only offered in the 1980 TYCO catalogue. TYCO went to crap around 1970 when the Tyler family sold it on to Consolidated Foods and the new owners switched manufacture to Hong Kong. The PowerTorque motor was the result, and you know the rest.

    Those old Tyco Silver Streak and Golden Eagle locos were pretty cool looking if not completely authentic and detailed models of the locos they were patterned after. I found a Tyco Silver Streak loco at an antiques emporium for cheap last year and unfortunately it turned out to be a non-runner..as in completely dead. So I removed the motor and turned it into dummy non-powered rolling stock. It still looks cool in my setup however had I found these videos about repairing old model locos at the time I might have been able to resurrect it.

    You did an outstanding refurbishing job! The more I look at some of your Tyco engines the more I'm thing of picking up one to convert to battery powered. There's room inside for the receiver, decoder and a battery pack (I think). do you have any kind of DCC system at all even the Bachmann one would work? Let me know. As always thanks for sharing all your finds and refurbishing videos. Chuck RVRR

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you could probably buy a wireless rc car battery and controller and of corse controll board and set that up. a few things you would have to make sure of is that the battery isn't higher then 16 volts and that the board out puts dc current not ac current

    SMT Mainline, ok, so I just got an eBay Alco 630 Santa Fe, with Power Torque and reversing headlights - same engine as the Golden Eagle. Got it running on a circle track for 5 min then- it stopped -revving and glowing brightly, but not going anywhere - it’s as if it’s stuck in neutral! No cars on it, revs high fwd and rev. I can see that the gear wheels aren’t engaging. I’m guessing the drive shaft is probably just spinning in there and not grabbing onto the drive gear? Edit: fixed it! The ‘nut’ on the drive shaft just needed to be pushed inboard to engage the gear

  • @shaygetz52
    @shaygetz52 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I gut the motors and replace them with CD ROM motors. Very little modification and the tiny pinion gear is a drop in fit. They have an interesting almost flywheel effect.

    Resurrection is the term you should use on these videos since you brought it back from dying or death. Restoration would mean you restored it both electrically and cosmetically to factory spec with all the trick plates, hand rails, etc.

    Most of the 1976-1982 Six-Axle Power Torque locomotives will have the same motor and side frames. These would be the Tyco E-7 ( 4 road names), the Tyco GG1 (5 paint variations), and the C-630 (1977-1980, Golden Eagle, ICG, and Santa Fe) The sideframes are jokingly nicknamed "vampire trucks" because of their fang-like appearance from the side view. The Tyco SD-24 (4 roadnames) has the same motor block, but more authentic EMD Flexicoil side frames (also more fragile) Your Baldwin Sharknose has the 1st generation Tyco Powertorque drive but with yard-type ARA side frames. This 1st gen. motor has poor ventilaton and tends to overheat more often than the 77-82 Powertorque motors, and often has the oddball 1-screw coverplate on the bottom. All of the Powertorque diesel motors will interchange between the different Tyco Powertorque diesel locomotives. This can come in handy when you have a nice shell and want to put a better motor in it!

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amazing, thanks for all the information. You're clearly extremely knowledgeable on these tyco locomotives, do you have any history working with them?

    • @gravesclayton3604
      @gravesclayton3604 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have restored and resold dozens of them, and have more that are awaiting restoration. If you would like some projects, I can send you a few if you are interested. There are also some vids out there that show how to replace the 3-pole pancake armature with small motors from computer CD-ROM drives, but I haven't gotten that ambitious yet. However, if you want to make a Powertorque motor isolated for DCC conversion, that would be the way to go! Most of my restorations are with factory parts I have scavenged over the past 4 decades, with the aim of restoring the original construction as close as possible. I have a limited amount of modern DCC locomotives, but probably no more than 10 or so. I have no room for a layout currently, so my collection lives on shelves in plastic and cardboard boxes :( Sometimes I clear off desk space and do some restoration projects using a 3' flex track for testing.

    I noted you did not apply any lubricant to the gear teeth - such as Labelle Teflon Plastic-Safe Grease. Did you find greasing the gears causes problems, or are the gears made of a self-lubricating plastic? Delrin plastic used for trucks is a self-lubricating plastic.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The amount of friction between binding gears is so minimal that adding lubricant would actually increase stress on the motor by causing it to move more fluid around. I have never heard of "Self-lubricating plastic" however some plastics are extremely low resistance to the point where they don't really need to be lubricated, so Self-lubricating sounds to me like another word for, "We made the plastic smooth enough that it doesn't require lubricant"
