Josh Beasley hey, so I’m finishing 8th grade, I’m recommended for all honers for high school, I’m in all possible honers classes, I’ve always made honers for grades, never had a c finishing, mostly A’s, I signed up for all honers classes in high school for when I get there, and I’m in scouts, what should I do from here to get into Yale, which is my dream school.
Wow you definitely worked hard, you deserve that spot in Yale!!! I just recently took a tour of the school and some super excited alumni I met at the bookstore talked to me. Hi Josh Beasley, I have watched many of your videos and noticed your outstanding accolades and acheivements and have used your advice in the many facets of high school life. I have some questions pertaining to my future college and I could benefit from your infinite wisdom. So here are some things about me first. I am an asian male junior, and I go to a competitive high school in silicon valley, and the average sat score in my school and its surrounding schools are around 1400 to 1500. In my freshamn year I took all honors, and my gpa was a 3.8. In my sophomore year, I took two weighted classes, engineering and AP Euro, honors chemistry, alegbra 2 honors, honors english, and PE. My gpa was a 3.7 unweighted, and a 3.9 weighted. I self studied for AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C and got a five on both, but I got a 2 on the AP Euro exam. This year, I am taking AP Psychology, AP English lang, AP CSP, AP Physics 1, USH, and precalculus H. Five are weighted, but my grades are terrible. My semester 1 grades are 2 As, 2Bs, and 2Cs. I am in national merit, and I got a 1430 on my SAT, and I will retake it and hopefully get a 1550 or so. My extracurriculars are junior varsity and varsity badminton, math and physics club and I have volunteered at the local library for tutoring. I might qualify for USAPHO and AIME this year. I want to know my chances of getting into UC Berekeley or an IVY league school, since I am in a unique situation. I want to major in computer science and statistics, and I have studied math and physics a lot since freshman year for fun. However, my grades are so bad, and I don't know who to ask besides people online. Even though around 20 or 30 people each year in my school go to an ivy league or equivant, I can't ask them, because I know they will tease and belittle me for being so stupid (the competition here is fierce). Please, some advice will be greatly appreciated.
I'm so mad at myself. I did nothing in freshman year/ my high school classes in 8th grade and I have a 3.4 as of right now in sophomore year. I don't think I'll ever be able to bring it up to a 4 because my school only offers a limited amount of ap classes so I can take 4 next year and 4 the year after. I'm going to try to get an independent study US gov over the summer and attempt to get as many ap classes as I can
I know you mentioned some of the things you were passionate about like magic, scubadiving and wakeboarding etc. where did you put that into ur appliction? Did you put that into yale supplamentals or right in the common app?
What did Dead Poet’s Society club entail? Loved the movie and it’s philosophies but I don’t know what a club based on it would look like. Any resources to check out for materials for meetings?
Quick important question to me. I am deciding between Physics 1 AP , AP Psychology, and AP Stastics for my Sophmore year elective. I am leaning towards AP Physics 1 for my sophmore year and AP Physics 2 for my junior year because I want to take Physics C for my senior year. How did you take Physics 1 in your Junior year and then jumpy to Physics C in your senior year?
I plan to make a video in the future about my SAT study tips, but I mainly used the official college board prep book and practice tests. I don't know the exact number of volunteer hours but it was probably 200-300. I told my college application story and talked about my rejections in one of my first video, so check that out for the full story.
My school offers no weighted classes for Freshman and Sophomores, and there is only one Pre-AP class we can take in these years. Junior and Senior year, I believe there are only 4-5 AP classes we can take. RIP Ivy Dreams.
yejin Suh I don’t know if everyone does this, but my school had a “mini election” type of thing. Anyone who wanted to be president made a video about themselves and why they would make a good leader. Then the other members of NHS voted for who they wanted.
Congrats on Eagle! Funny enough, Im an eagle scout as well(Received it around November of my sophomore year).Still havent went to Philemont yet, though we plan to go soon. Did you ever go to Jambo? PS If you dont mind me asking, did you get palms?
Thanks for your comment! Congrats on Eagle! I never got the chance to go to the National Jamboree, I really wish I could have. Unfortunately, I did not get any palms, mainly because I couldn't make it to a lot of the meetings during my Junior year because I was so busy.
I didn't take any aps during freshman sophomore year (however honors pre-calc was weighted) because my school offered aps to the upperclassmen first. I want to take as many aps as possible. I want to go into engineering. This year I'm taking Calculus (unfortunately my school does not offer ap calc. bc; still weighted tho), AP Chem, AP Physics, AP Comp Sci, regular english, and spanish 1. Senior year, I planning to take AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Government, and AP Literature, Spanish 2, and PE. I also plan to take multivariable and linear algebra at my local community college. But the truth of the matter is that I just don't have enough room in my schedule. And my school also does not have a lot of ap courses that a lot of the other schools have (like Physics B/C, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, etc) I'm taking pretty much the maximum of classes I can take and my counselors won't allow me to add any more classes. However, with 6-7 aps, if I got all As and 5s on the exam, do you think colleges would then consider my situation or at least know about how my school runs things? I know this is a long msg, but I appreciate it a LOT! Thank you!
Colleges will look into to your school and take account of what courses they offer. As long as you are challenging yourself with your resources that you are given, you should be fine.
Just wondering if you had to submit all the school profiles along with your application since you went to so many different schools? Thanks for sharing!
I can't remember exactly how many activities they asked for on the common app, but I'm positive every extra-curricular I mentioned I did end up putting in my application

If you are reading this, please reply I'd be extremely thankful. I'm in 9th grade and dream of going to Yale. I am willing to do whatever it takes but the only problem is that I am Australian. Is there any foreign students that go there and how is the process different if I'm in Australia?
Why didn't you take the AP French exam? You probably could've gotten an excellent score! Are you going to minor in French at Yale? Did you take any SAT IIs?
After taking two years of French at my Texas high school and then transferring to Virginia, French 4 was extremely stressful for me and took up way too much time, so i decided against AP French. I don't plan on minoring in French. I took the Math 2, Physics, and US History SAT II's and scored an 800, 800, and 770 respectively. Thanks for watching!!
Thanks so much! I'm a rising senior and Yale is my dream school but I didn't quite know where to start my application! Watching your video, I noticed that I have a lot of similarities with you in regards to classes and extracurriculars (fellow violinist!), which gives me some more hope for the future:) I had a couple questions- based on the courses available at my school and the number of classes we can take, coupled with the fact that I've been taking french and orchestra so less space available on my schedule, I've only taken a few AP classes. I also self studied a few for the AP tests, and got 4s and 5s on all of them. I also don't have a 4.0 gpa- do you think I would have a good chance to get in based on my academic workload? How much does Yale take APs into account, and what APs count for college credit? Thanks so much again if you read through my long comment.

Hey! So I'm thinking of joining my school's HOSA chapter, but I'm a rising junior; is it too late to join? Like, if I applied to Harvard or some other top school, would they look down on that? Even if i ended up ranking nationally? I've done everything else for all the years I've been in HS.
Do you have to do that all to get into Yale? I thought I was doing well with Geometry and all honors classes freshman year, my third year of Spanish, and four electives since I took World History over the summer. I’m planning on joining multiple extracurriculars and playing golf. I also asked my teacher if I could take Geometry over the summer so that I could take Algebra 2 freshman year, (as I had grown bosom with it), but she discouraged it, and thus, my parents wouldn’t permit it. So, basically, what I’m trying to say is that I’m an aspiring Anesthesiologist, I think that Yale is where I would like to attend college at the moment, and I’m just wondering if I still have a shot.
Did you skip Cal AB? Just take BC instead? Beacuse I’m thinking to take AB online (a year long) and BC second semester in order to boost my gpa and I’m an arising junior. Do you suggest this?
Lol I’m a sophomore and I’m taking ap stat and world just like you did! However I’m just taking ap Lang, ap physics, and apush next year along with accel precal and spanish 3. In senior year I plan to take ap Econ, ap gov, ap environmental, and ap calc bc. Is a total of 9 ap’s Yale worthy ( my dream school). Oh, also all my other classes are/ will be gifted. I lettered in diving my freshman year and have made state this year and will the next two years. I’m in beta club rn and will be in nhs next year. Is this all yale worthy stuff?
I'm planning on taking a sat subject test which I'm taking the course coming school year I bought it's prep books should I still buy the sat subject test prep book
You should definitely get the subject test books. The subject tests often take on a much different form than AP exams. The book will give you practice towards the specific type of questions they ask.
For the SAT, I recommend the official College Board book. For Subject tests (especially math 2) go with Barrons, and for AP tests stick with the Princeton review.
Hey!! I’m also not going to have any math left in my senior schedule, do you recommend taking Multivariable calculus at my community college? Did the credits transfer?
You said that you took French your freshman and sophomore year but what happened after that. Did you learn it by yourself or did you just completely abandon it?
Im having such a hard time in intermediate stats! Is there anything you recommend for studying? Help! Im scared im gonna fail, I already failed my 1st exam. (What do you mean you got a 5 in statistics?)
hi! i'm a freshman in a small private school that does not offer many AP courses. right now i'm taking honor's biology, algebra 1, english, spanish 1, state studies, and driver's ed, with school newspaper as an extracurricular. right now, i plan on majoring in journalism or something similar to that. i really wish i could take more honor's/AP classes but my school does not offer them. i'm afraid this is going to hurt my chances of getting into a good college. do you know if this will hurt me? or will colleges see what my school offers and weigh it accordingly?
Sorry if this is a late reply, but I'm replying because I have seen this issue a lot about APs. Advance Placement courses are not the only way to get into top colleges. Colleges look at how well you challenged yourself given what you had. Since your school does not offer any AP classes, then you do not need to worry. Challenge yourself as best as possible, score well on the SAT and SATII, and pile up on ECs. If you want, you can self study AP tests since from my experience and from some of my friends, some AP tests are really easy to study for. I'm self studying AP Physics C Mechanics and AP Physics C E&M as well as AP Chemistry. So to answer your question, no it won't hurt you and yes, colleges will take into consideration what's available to you and weight it accordingly.
i didn’t get all A’s my first semester of high school, with no AP classes and one honors. is it still possible for me to get a 5.0 best case scenario. what are my options?
How many times did you take the SAT and what were your scores from each time if you don't mind saying? From what I understand almost all ivies require you to submit your score from every attempt.
do you ever spend some downtime by yourself just watching tv or something. Your activities and scores are so superb that is seems incredible that you have any free time at all. Sorry for all the questions that seem really interview-ish.
Camille L idk....Maybe no time for fun, sleepless nights and a lot of stress. It seems like a little excessive to take about 13 AP classes in high school. There’s no need for all of that stress.
@@ivi122 I agree. I took 5 APs in high school, got into a really good university in my state, and am happy as can be. There's no toxic competition or stuck up rich kids either like you would find at an ivy.
Camille L my 17 year old son who’s going to be a senior this year took 2 APs last year and this year is taking 2 more plus an early college experience physics class which is also a hard class. He’s involved in national honor society, student government, yearbook and is starting a robotics club with a friend of his (hopefully if they don’t end up back in distance learning)... he plays lacrosse and cross country too. Plus he has a 4.0 and ranks so far 3rd in his class. So, he didn’t want to take too many AP and go crazy which I think it’s smart. Btw, congratulations to you for getting accepted in a good college where you’re happy and thriving
Hello, so I wanted to ask what you think that I can do to get into colleges. I am currently a freshman taking 4 AP classes, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Human Geography, and AP Computer Science Principles, and I have straight A's right now. I plan on taking classes at the state university next year. I also qualified for math counts nationals last year and got 1st in the state for an Algebra 2 competition. This year, I qualified for nationals for FBLA, which I plan on attending. I took the ACT this year and got a 34, and plan on taking it again to get the 36, along with the SAT. I am also the captain of the school quiz bowl team. So, do you have any idea on what I should do next?

Please, some advice will be greatly appreciated.
i just watched your some videos. thats are really really inspiring
Ok but in all seriousness.... how did you get sleep in high school.
What did Dead Poet’s Society club entail? Loved the movie and it’s philosophies but I don’t know what a club based on it would look like. Any resources to check out for materials for meetings?
how does water ski camp advance your application
wow! how did you keep up with all those activities and ap classes? amazing performance! congratulations
Can you share your time management? How were you able to keep up your grades and participate in so many extracurricular activities?
I have a few questions
How did you prepare for the SAT
How many volunteer hours do you have
Did you get rejected into any colleges
I plan to make a video in the future about my SAT study tips, but I mainly used the official college board prep book and practice tests. I don't know the exact number of volunteer hours but it was probably 200-300. I told my college application story and talked about my rejections in one of my first video, so check that out for the full story.
My school offers no weighted classes for Freshman and Sophomores, and there is only one Pre-AP class we can take in these years. Junior and Senior year, I believe there are only 4-5 AP classes we can take. RIP Ivy Dreams.
Nope that is not a RIP because they consider how much they offer, and if you do alternate SAT 2, your basically fine
How do you become a president of the national honor society? Do you have to submit some kind of application to the NHS?
yejin Suh I don’t know if everyone does this, but my school had a “mini election” type of thing. Anyone who wanted to be president made a video about themselves and why they would make a good leader. Then the other members of NHS voted for who they wanted.
Please do a video specifically on IB Higher level subjects and which ones do colleges prefer.(Sciences or humanities or a mix of both)
Congrats on Eagle!
I understand what you mean.I was still in my sophomore year this past year and I could barely even make the meetings.
Thank you! :)
I wakeboard too that's rlly cool!!! Sucks is not a year round sport.
Me too, I get to wake board 3 weeks every summer and that's it. Really wish I could get on the water more.
Subscribed! You are so perfect! Thanks for the video!
Just wondering if you had to submit all the school profiles along with your application since you went to so many different schools? Thanks for sharing!
When did you live in Prattville and where did you go to school? I’m from Montgomery
Which activities did you specifically put on your common app application in the section that asks for activities?
I can't remember exactly how many activities they asked for on the common app, but I'm positive every extra-curricular I mentioned I did end up putting in my application
Hey! I'm hosting a film festival at Yale this year for amateur (as in not film majors) film-makers. All films under 10 minutes are welcome, so feel free to make something to enter! There will be flyers up with more information by each residential dining hall within the next few days.
nice video bro!! well done!!
If I've taken the AP french class at my school, as well as the exam and got a 4 on it, would you recommend still taking the sat subject test?
Also, is it bad to write about my religion/ culture and how it shaped my ideals and life in general in the essay?
Could you tell me about the veteran support club? I'm a rising junior and am interested in starting one myself
So, the American Veteran's Support Group is an organization to spread awareness and support for our nation's servicemen and women. We ran several clothing drives, fundraising contests, and made weekly visits to the local veteran's retirement home. We often invited guest speakers for our monthly meetings too.
Josh Beasley okay, thank you very much. Keep up the great videos!
It’s all relative to your school and the people in it, how did you compare to your classmates
Did you skip Cal AB? Just take BC instead? Beacuse I’m thinking to take AB online (a year long) and BC second semester in order to boost my gpa and I’m an arising junior. Do you suggest this?
hey! what is ur opinion on ap micro & macro? I take a full course load of ib classes, but want to take one of those above online...any suggestions ?
What prep books do you recommend? Princeton Barron's etc?
For the SAT, I recommend the official College Board book. For Subject tests (especially math 2) go with Barrons, and for AP tests stick with the Princeton review.
Hey!! I’m also not going to have any math left in my senior schedule, do you recommend taking Multivariable calculus at my community college? Did the credits transfer?
You said that you took French your freshman and sophomore year but what happened after that. Did you learn it by yourself or did you just completely abandon it?
What did you for your eagle project ?
When I watched the video I started laughing from our similarities. my dad was also in the airforce before his retirement.
lol that's cool. I built and installed 20 bluebird habitats and predator guards at my local wildlife refuge for my Eagle project.
Did you take the SAT Subject test?
I took 3 subject tests, and have made multiple other videos about them, so you should check those out if your curious!
I just realize I have the exact same schedule as you in junior year😂, even including french.
Any tips for international students?
damn its so creative how you made this video
Thank you! This has been one of my favorite videos to make!
yay! i love how you did the map thingy when your were talking about all the places youve lived lol
+Manjari G thank! That took way too long to edit lol
Do you have to take all honors because I didn’t . Can I still get into a top college?
What school did you go to in rapid city
Im having such a hard time in intermediate stats! Is there anything you recommend for studying? Help! Im scared im gonna fail, I already failed my 1st exam. (What do you mean you got a 5 in statistics?)
What about ib?
I’m literally 12
How did you go from Precalc Honors to AP BC Calc?
That’s how it usually goes
hi! i'm a freshman in a small private school that does not offer many AP courses. right now i'm taking honor's biology, algebra 1, english, spanish 1, state studies, and driver's ed, with school newspaper as an extracurricular. right now, i plan on majoring in journalism or something similar to that. i really wish i could take more honor's/AP classes but my school does not offer them. i'm afraid this is going to hurt my chances of getting into a good college. do you know if this will hurt me? or will colleges see what my school offers and weigh it accordingly?
So to answer your question, no it won't hurt you and yes, colleges will take into consideration what's available to you and weight it accordingly.
also, did you take the SAT essay
Yes I did,I strongly recommend writing the essay
Josh Beasley what did u get?
@@JoshBeasley I got a 1560 on the SAT, but 18/24 on the essay. (first attempt) Do you recommend a retake?
i didn’t get all A’s my first semester of high school, with no AP classes and one honors. is it still possible for me to get a 5.0 best case scenario. what are my options?
ReeseThe Sizzler nope, you dip once you never go back. Sure you can eat a 4.9 or something if u haul ass, but not a 5
hopefully i get into yale for next year
SAT score?
Ayyy, I live in Herndon, VA!!
Thanks!
he looks like Michael Phelps
The lovechild of Michael Phelps and Andy Bernard
How many times did you take the SAT and what were your scores from each time if you don't mind saying? From what I understand almost all ivies require you to submit your score from every attempt.
3 Times
Did you apply for MIT?
Please vlog in college!!
Yeah... I have no chance of going to Yale
how many hours did you sleep daily (this is a sincere question) THANKS IN ADVANCE
Honestly like 6 or 7
(:3[____]
do you ever spend some downtime by yourself just watching tv or something. Your activities and scores are so superb that is seems incredible that you have any free time at all. Sorry for all the questions that seem really interview-ish.
How the heck did you have time for all that
Camille L idk....Maybe no time for fun, sleepless nights and a lot of stress.
Do middle school scores matter ?
No
how do you even have money? do you work?
Can you state the requirements to get into Yale University?
Be perfect at everything you do
My gpa is 2.7 and I got a 1000 on the sat can I get into Yale?
Nop
Nate Ryan Is your daddy rich ? No? Then helllls no
NOOOPPEEE
Military Kids 💪🏾 and Computer Science as a study hall 😂
You got 1500 points out of how many?
Arthur 94 1600
So I'm assuming you didn't work while your were in school
Josh H or had any kind of fun 😆 he took like 13 APs for crying out loud
Thats very impressive lol in every aspect damnnn.
Speaking as someone from Rapid City, SD....I'm sorry you had to live here.....twice.
That’s a ridiculous AP schedule. Why would anyone put themselves through that in high school? It’s too much
Did your parents go to Yale?
The bg music and overall intro seems so smuggish....not hating tho! and congrats :)
Boi this isn't a vid to tell how you got into Yale you just wanted to flex all the shit you did in hs. Impressive tho
I know right 😂. He like I’m the shit.
Josh change your name to Josh Beastly
I think your unweighted gpa just slapped me across the face
