XenaPrincess depends on the state here in Texas (a conservative state) being a certain race helps in regard to scholarship opportunities but that’s about it. But true depending on where you live that’s a factor to a degree and depending on the institution. Harvard has seemed to be the biggest proponent of affirmative action
XenaPrincess I doubt affirmative action is what got them into Yale and besides white women have benefited the most from affirmative action. Not people of color.

i'm amazed at the girl who had a 1390 sat score bc yale's minimum sat score requirement is 1450 but i'm guessing she made up for that with grades, ap classes, and extracurriculars (and she was ranked #2 in her entire senior class)
natalia alianovna Well there isn’t really a true “minimum” there are averages they take but they’re just that, averages. You don’t have to hit a certain score technically. That being said you’re for sure right that she made up for it in other areas (grades, aps, extra curriculars) because 1390 is on the lower end. I think most people don’t understand how much personality and passion matters in the application (thus your essays because that’s how you get personality and passion across). Also class rank doesn’t play that big of a role. A #1 at a school doesn’t have a better chance than a #14 solely based on rank. (Generally you’ll just find that Val and sals also do a ton of other stuff that help them get in) the ranking itself isn’t that important.
The girl in the white is “that girl” she hit us with the I don’t wanna seem like a try hard and said she didn’t check her transcript or study for the sat my guy 😂
she lying 100%...she said she didn't study for the SAT, but then said she took it twice. So why even take it a second time if you're not gonna study after your first try?..makes no sense.
5sitka I mean... not saying she’s for sure telling the truth but I’ve retaken exams and resits in my school without studying for either. The exam itself is the studying LMFAOO... like I just hope I get lucky I guess?
4.75 gpa, 1590 sat, 36 ACT, 800 physics sat, 800 math II sat, 13 aps, 9 ap tests so far- eight 5s and one 4. straight As, varsity soccer, NHS. denied from Yale :( main thing I think is extracurriculars and internships cause clearly test scores and stats do not make it happen on their own. Huge congrats to these talented and hardworking people!
@@hoixthegreat8359 thank you! I'm not decided yet but Im really considering CU Boulder for aerospace engineering if your curious. They have a great program.
Aidan Luczkow You’re literally perfect! I don’t get why you were denied. For extracurricular activities, I think Varsity Soccer is so enough, plus NHS!
This lowkey sounds like me since I am only ever in the A and B range. But a low grade doesn't matter. If that low grade goes up through the school year colleges will see you have great work ethic to pull yourself together. (applies to all classes and their course lvl lol)
everyone saying how they're a failure or lesser than these people... being "school smart" is a veryy small part of being an intelligent and well-rounded person. the school you attend does not define your worth or your intelligence in the slightest. having a high work ethic does not equate to being intelligent. I find it really limiting and superficial how much value we place on what school we attend or what job we end up pursuing. we all end up in the same place eventually.
If you don’t go to an Ivy league school it’s not the end of the world. If you’re getting A’s and B’s you’re fine. You don’t have to do sports, you don’t have to theater, etc. Just be who you are.
But if you do wanna shoot for a top school, don’t be scared to try out a sport! Look around for sports that accept inexperienced people, and get a friend to do it with you. That’s what I did for lacrosse. No regrets!
Kay Tee that sucks because thats not really fair. anyone who has great grades such as him should be able to get it, but no.. they want diversity. which i somewhat understand, but they need to include white kids who worked for it too
And also aside from race if you have high stats and apply to colleges that you are “overqualified” for they are less likely to accept you because they think you wouldn’t want to go there even if you did get accepted. But on the plus side when you are “overqualified” colleges throw huge scholarships at you to get you to pick their school.
@@wetmilk7826 absolutely, but I think you have to look at it from this perspective -- most of the time, poc and minorities have a harder time getting those grades. without the support of parents/a solid home income it's much harder to get the grades, and more often than not minorities and poc struggle with this and also intense discrimination in ways that white people don't. so while he got the same grades, he probably had an easier time, because of his race. as a white person I used to be frustrated but I think about it this way now.
For those out there applying to colleges, just know that not getting in to a specific school doesn't mean you're a failure! I have plenty of friends who started in like community colleges and ended up in med school, PhD programs, high paying jobs out of their bachelor's etc. What matters more is how hard you study once you get into whatever college.

I’m a fourth year medical student interviewing for residency right now. Not sure why this was in my recommended but I feel like I should say something to you younger generation here. I remember being a 16 year old high school student completely obsessed with going to one of these name-brand universities for college. Let me tell you guys something: it doesn’t matter where you go. I ended up not getting into an Ivy League school, but still attended a “top 20” university based on rankings. It did me more harm than good for my pre-med career; the classes were much harder than my state school counterparts and grade deflation caused me to have a low GPA. It took me an extra year+ a lot of effort to build a resume to get accepted to med school. PS: I have an interview at the Yale health system for my residency program next week. I already know I’m going to be ranking it a lot lower than some regional hospitals that I’d much rather train at. Name and “prestige” isn’t everything :)
I just want to say if any of you are in your senior/junior year of highschool, do NOT waste time feeling guilty about not being the best student. We get tired of saying it maybe but there is nothing truer than "grades and numbers do not define you". It is absolute ludicrous that potentially a few adults who have stressful days, make mistakes, might not be the teacher you need determine whether you get your dreams or not. Education and knowledge are indispensable- keep teaching yourself in every way that you can and you are called to. But please do not compare to these people as if they are the only right way. At the end of it all, you are your actions, thoughts, and feelings. Be sure that it is your voice saying you want the grades, the high scores, the ivy league and not your parents or friends or society. You are smart and capable enough in ways we have not celebrated yet- show us. Edit: Coming from an Education major who wishes the education system of America would be revised already.

In all honesty, after going through college I think at a certain point it doesn’t matter too much where you went. I’m working in big tech and a lot of my peers went to Berkeley, Penn, USC, etc but I definitely still hold my own. It’s all about how hard you grind in college and how much you prep for the real world!
If I get all As this year I’ll prob apply, but I’m rly just banking on the fact that both of my parents went there😬. I’ve done well this year: all As, 4 AP classes, some leadership positions, solid extracurriculars, and I’ve been getting a 1500 on my practice SAT tests. However, in sophomore and freshman year I was not doing too hot. 5 Bs both years combined, and I didn’t rly do much outside of Freshman basketball and Chem olympics. You mean the obvious examples of affirmative action? I've watched countless videos of students who got into Ivies and they either had perfect grades/sat scores/dozens of great ECs or they are black/hispanic and play the "my race changed my world" narrative. Alexa Salgado Definitely. More people should be aware of this. They blind themselves chasing Ivy League schools like it’s the only thing that will make them successful. I’ve met many intelligent people who went to great universities and ended making the same amount of money as people who just went to community college and transferred. The school you go to has nothing to do with your future. I applied to Yale and the letter I got back said "Not only no. Not only HELL no. But you are never to come within 100 miles of the Yale campus for any reason the rest of your life." So I went to community college and drank beer every day for 2 years
I failed algebra 2 in 10th grade, and overall got really terrible grades that year. HOWEVER, I also took 15+ extracurriculars that year, since we were coming off of online learning, and I have always been considered to be a “role-model” in my friends/family group, so I wanted to prove to people that I could be like an adult and handle stress, lacking experience and maturity that adults have. This year, I am doing so much better, Next year, I will be applying to all ivies because I have things that show that my grades don’t define who I am. So even if you don’t do well, there is no shame in applying to the college of your dreams!

Mac it was just like any other public school. I have a 4.0 and I’m a junior in college so I don’t think it was easy, otherwise I’d be struggling rn.
natalia alianovna Well there isn’t really a true “minimum” there are averages they take but they’re just that, averages. (Generally you’ll just find that Val and sals also do a ton of other stuff that help them get in) the ranking itself isn’t that important.

everyone saying how they're a failure or lesser than these people... being "school smart" is a veryy small part of being an intelligent and well-rounded person. the school you attend does not define your worth or your intelligence in the slightest. having a high work ethic does not equate to being intelligent.
But on the plus side when you are “overqualified” colleges throw huge scholarships at you to get you to pick their school.
wet milk Almost everyone applying has great grades there are other factors
@@wetmilk7826 absolutely, but I think you have to look at it from this perspective -- most of the time, poc and minorities have a harder time getting those grades. without the support of parents/a solid home income it's much harder to get the grades, and more often than not minorities and poc struggle with this and also intense discrimination in ways that white people don't. so while he got the same grades, he probably had an easier time, because of his race. as a white person I used to be frustrated but I think about it this way now.

for those who dont follow the american gradung system, imma try to explain the unweighted GPA (Grade Point Average) because the weighted GPA (with APs and accelerated courses) is different for every school:
all A’s 4.0
some B’s but mostly A’s 3.5~3.9
some A’s but mostly B’s 3.4~3.1
all B’s 3.0
some C’s but mostly B’s 2.5~2.9
some B’s but mostly C’s 2.4~2.1
all C’s 2.0
I think you see the pattern, hopefully it helped :)
for those who grade systems are in numbers:
A - 90 to 100
B - 80 to 90
C - 70 to 80
D - 60 to 70
F - 50 to 0 (if you get an F you basically failed the class/test)

I was kinda lazy in middle school, because I didn’t really care after finding out colleges don’t even glance at middle school transcripts. However, I’m taking high school extremely seriously, with straight A’s so far. Although, I do struggle quite a bit in mathematics. I’m also not sure about extra curricular’s. Any tips? Anyways, this has inspired, and motivated, me! I am determined to land in an Ivy League school.
Same! I rlly want to get into UPenn… what r your stats so far?
I applied to Yale and the letter I got back said "Not only no. Not only HELL no. But you are never to come within 100 miles of the Yale campus for any reason the rest of your life." So I went to community college and drank beer every day for 2 years
WHERE IS NED FROM THE TRY GUYS?
They asked Yale students. Ned is a former Yale student, he’s a Yale graduate now.
anyone else feeling lowkey like a failure hearing the lowest grade was a-
I failed algebra 2 in 10th grade, and overall got really terrible grades that year. So even if you don’t do well, there is no shame in applying to the college of your dreams!
best luck to you!!
Being from France it's so weird hearing what their essays are about. Here top schools only care about your grades first and then if you are pre-selected they let you show who you are through interview.
