I just have to say, as a professional photographer coming from the photojournalism side of things, I've had to learn a lot of tricks in Photoshop when I got hired onto a marketing department. You've been a life saver for years. I appreciate that you put this stuff up for free and you are a very good teacher on top of things. So, thank you to you and your team.
omg. you solved a problem in your first minute, that i've had for sooo long. words can't describe how thankful i am. Thank you and all the best for you ❤
Having worked in many of the top retouching studios, I can tell you none of them work in 16-bit. It is useful to initially process 16-bit RAW files, but they are always processed down to 8-bit for retouching. THEN, as a very last step, convert back to 16-bit, flatten, then back to 8-bit for the final delivery. What this achieves is to render your adjustment layers in 16-bit. Any banding you may have while working in 8-bit is removed in this final step.
This is awesome. Your guide on using 16-bit to avoid banding a has transformed my editing workflow. Your clear distinction between color and luminance noise, along with preserving details, is invaluable. Thanks for making complex concepts accessible and enhancing our skills!
TY Piximperfect, this tutorial came in clutch for the abstract bokeh background I created. I had lightened an area and it had created banding. It looks great now!
In most instances, Gaussian blur is the way to go. Note that older monitors/televisions tend to have difficulty displaying the full range of colors in smooth gradients and thus will likely still have a little bit of banding afterwards, something that can only be properly judged when using a newer and properly calibrated display device meant for work like this.
I sometimes get caught out with LED banding. Is this the best way to deal with that or is there a better solution? I truly love the speed at which you explain things. Straight to the point. Thank you.
@PiXimperfect Doesn't the banding going back when we convert from 16-bit channel to 8-bit? I'm not sure that navigators or printers manage 16-bit channels pictures 🤔 so we need to convert pictures back to 8-bit channels, right? Thx for your tutorials 🙏
How did you know I was facing this problem today... You're clearly working with the government. Nonetheless, these tips are invaluable. Thank you so much! Beautifully explained, as always. (:
Hello photoshop superstar ! thanks for your brilliant videos ! I'm currently facing a problem with a batch of photo affected by flickering effect (darker bands on photo) do you have some efficient fix for that ? I have to many to fix to do a dodge and burn manually on each of them ! (I've watch the video on removing shadow, that's not good enough...) thanks for everything !
Let me as this question? And this is regarding much of what you teach…. Have you ever tried printing an actual photo at any size above 16x20? OR are we now just happy with what looks good on a screen?
"8bit" vs "8bit dithering" vs "10bit", common problem in video quality. 😅 This banding problem always happen to me if I download landscape wallpaper in JPG format, they compressed that to the bone 😅, hard to find any wallpaper with original quality in PNG format.
hi unmesh! what should i do when surface blur is the one causing the problem? i've been working in 16bit and the image doesn't have any banding but as soon as i apply the filter, i start to see some. doesnt even matter if the original image is jpg or raw, it keeps revealing some banding as soon as i use surface blur... can you help me out on this one?
Do you offer any "remote walk throughs?" I've watched your vid (and a few others) regarding the removal of banding, and NOTHING is working. I need to release the photos in a month and until I figure out how to fix the issue (and potentially stop it from happening again) I don't want to retouch the other photos from the set, which will require similar retouching and therefore will likely have the same banding issue. PLEASE HELP!
Quick question: I vaguely remember that switching to 16 bit cause some features to be unavailable or some other problem in Ps. Does anybody know more precisely what I'm talking about, and if it still applies?
Working in 16 bit is redundant and slow. It is far, far more efficient to work in 8 bit and only convert to 16 bit before flattening the file after you've finished making any edits. You can then convert back to 8 bit once the file has been flattened.
The problem with this is it causes Photoshop to lag like crazy when you save your file. Takes way too long. And your file size increases a lot too. A simple file like like goes over 1 GB easily. Don't work in 16 bit unless you need to.
@PiXimperfect, Do you know that your videos are being stolen? Are they being re-voiced into Russian and posted on a TH-cam channel? find the video "Инструмент «Мастерская кисть» от начала до конца - Photoshop для начинающих | Урок 12"

Man why do I watch each and every video of yours even when I don't have any PC to use Photoshop? 😭😭
You're such a good explainer I can't help it 😮💨

TY Piximperfect, this tutorial came in clutch for the abstract bokeh background I created. I had lightened an area and it had created banding. It looks great now!
Great tutorial as always. I would also like to learn how different blur modes work and how to decide which one to choose.

Problem soleved in under 1 min! Love it
"That is definitely causing banding in my head." 😂 Hilarious comment! I will definitely have to remember that one and use it myself
Thank you so much!!
Excellent video, very useful advice! Thank you! What about using frequency seperation (using blur on the tones' layer) for banding removal?
I sometimes get caught out with LED banding. Is this the best way to deal with that or is there a better solution? I truly love the speed at which you explain things. Straight to the point. Thank you.
You are the True Mentor, BIG Brother ;)
You are great, I have learned so much from you
You're awesome man, thanks for another one.

Thank you ❤
you saved my life
Excellent video. How about Lightroom? Thanks.
Thank you
Nice work
I like all videos
Just a question. At 3:21, is there a reason you created another layer with a mask, instead of painting directly onto the smart filter's mask?
People have so many jpeg images made with smaller sensors…it’s good to know there are solutions to ‘save’ those treasured images!!
you are a great host. people love you.
love the tee❤
Thank you, I didn't even know it was called "banding"!

Could you kindly provide us tutorials on retouching for products, jewelry, and architecture as well?
Nice shirt, BTW 😁
Some pictures can be turned into JPG with paint to solve the banding but only if its minimal

I’ll like to get your plug in for photoshop compositing but I would like to use Bitcoin as a payment method
why the bending is always like in the gray areas??
When did you switch to Mac!!!!!?
👍
Couldn't you just select the sky and blur it?
👏👏👏👏👏
Hi, but what to do if there are clouds in the sky?

Why are you so amazing?
Basic kab aayega?
Why not 32 bit?
sometimes I just accept it
The problem being that if you work in 16 bits many of the filters in Photoshop are unavailable.
But it's just plain sky in this photo. What if there are clouds on the sky?
Retire 8 bit already! 😂
Why are we even dealing with banding in 2024? Seriously! HOW is this still an issue?!?!
"that is definitely causing banding in my head."
You can have the same effect with h264 and h265 10 and 16bit 444 as of 12 years ago thanks to anime nerds
Cannot hear your neighbor at all. 👍
dont use mac
But artistic filter not work in 16bit😂
Your face looks like real photoshoped😂
I don't know what they are building 😂

You are not a professional photo editor when comparing your content creating skills.
Sadly, my photos do not have banding but posting them on social media, banding appears lol. Those social media devs should have fixed it.
