My two cents: Great tips. And it definitely depends mostly in presentation. This is why there is no ONE perfect setup that would cover all our angling needs. When I first got started I would have stuck to a system like (using Shimano sizing); rod 7-7½=3000, rod 8-8½=4000, 9'=5000, 10-11'=6000 and up. Then I discovered inshore fishing for Speckled Trout and Snook down in Florida. For that I use an 8' rod, but it's rated ⅛-½ and is strictly for throwing soft plastics rigged weightless or on a jighead no heavier that ½ oz, more often 3/16, etc. And THEN I discovered Salmon & Steelhead fishing in which I might use a 10 "noodle rod" (super light similar to the 8'er).. both of these rods feel much better with a 3000 maybe 4000 for the 10'er. Again because the lures are super light and anything bigger on those rods feels (and looks) downright clunky. It really is all about the fishery and the lures/presentation.

been throwing a vs150 on a century ss1265 10'6" and its amazing. most guys would say its too light but I'm fishing sand beaches and jetties. If you know how to fight a fish you can get away with lighter reels. The 150 and the SS gives me an incredible amount of sensitivity with my presentation.

Very Good explanation gyus..... a "Balanced Outfit" that fits the lure weight that you are throwing and where you are fishing (plus weather conditions)......as an example.... If I am are throwing 2.5 to-6oz lures in big surf rough conditions I go with my 11ft3 " Lamiglass and it's set up with a Penn 7500SS or an Abu 7000 bait caster......Heavy Big Water Rough conditions with chunk bait or big plugs to weed out small fish......This is not an outfit to be used at inlets breachways and/or back bay areas with calmer water where I go with anywhere from an 8-10ft fast action lighter set up lures 1-3oz.......A good all rounder rod for me is a 9-10ft blank paired with a Penn 5500 SS or 6500SS and 30 lbs braid......This covers most moderate surf fihing situations

Thanks for the insights. Ive been watching all your videos and reading up on the journal.
Im on the west coast, SF bay area. I plan on surf fishing and would like to purchase waders, boots and a top can you do a video on this.
I have a Lamiglas LIS10MS. 10ft. fast action rod rated for 15-25lb. and 1-3oz. its mated with a Penn Conflict 5000 . Thoughts? Im thinking it might be to small as the rod (with reel) balances at a point 10"-12" in front of reel.
I'll be fishing for 22"-35" Halibut and up to 30" Stripers.
I have 20# braid with 15' of mono leader currently.
Love your channel and videos! Keep up the great work.
    Thanks.

Ken Loomis love the conflict reels in have a 8000 and used on a 10 foot mh penn surf rod and i could tell the reel wasnt a good match so i switched to a 6000 and its perfect your rod is a medium so 5000 should be good

Most of these guys seem to get a long medium light 1-4oz to throw about 2 oz plugs.
