It's also about the weight of the reel! Try making 50-75 casts with a Penn vs Van Staal. The difference is staggering.
As someone who has a Van Staal, a few Stellas, 2 Saltiga DFs, and an assortment of lower tier reels....I find myself picking up my old trusty 6k Shimano Spheros it was a $140 purchase in Japan about 6-7 years ago...I haven't had it serviced yet, due to it being a JDM model. But I have cleaned, oiled, and greased once. Still butter for what it is🤙

Great advice. We do fish alot of times. And even when im so careful not to drop my reel in the sand, but it happens. And having completely sealed machinery comes into play. Otherwise im opening my reels and tuning it up
Another decent reel for a good price is the Saltx this will be my 3rd season L.I fishing. with it from jones beach to montauk, I like it better then the Bg too . Just giving a humble opinion. Others might agree or disagree 😅. Stay safe and tight lines for the upcoming season
I want to follow up my last post with, I'm sure you are glad that the $1000 dollar reel you bought is still in such great shape after sitting on the bottom of the ocean for as long as it has been, after going over the side of a boat or being dragged off the shore. Sorry brother, I couldn't help myself, ha ha ha. I'm laughing but feeling so bad for you at the same time. I would tease my best friend the same way so please don't take offense. Just picked up an unused Penn 710z on eBay for $150. Will never have to buy another surf reel. Will outlast any overpriced van staal. These old Penn reels will last two lifetimes.
Being from NH the amount of fishing I can do is limited. $1000 gives me three dependable reels and three good poles for inshore work. A good rinse and a good service when it needs it ( once a year and learn to do it yourself ) will make a 100 to 150 dollar reel last for a long time up here. If you are only going to buy 1 set up for the rest of your life, and you are young, buy the very best and pray you don't lose it overboard or drive over it or get it stolen.
I'm 59 in a few months and I'm never going to out live three good reels and poles, and nobody is going to be looking to steal my Penn Battle 3's, or my ...'s and resell them compared to a Van Staal. They both have their place and I'm jealous of those who can afford the best, but I'm also very happy for them as fishing for sport is about the fun, the friendships made, and the comradery of those in the sport. -- den in NH

You can get lol 10 of the $100 reels and get mostly a full season or two maybe more if you take care of them. And if not then oh well deal with it buy a new one. And if you loose a $1000 to the ocean because of butter fingers well guess what you'll wish you didn't spend it now you need to wait till you can afford a new $1000 reel. Lesson here is if you can afford the $1000 reel get it. Plus van staal reels come with a 1x reel cleaning each year from a qualified van staal reel place that can properly clean them.

The ability to not have to worry about something breaking while on the water drives me toward the van Staal.

Got an ugly stik combo a year ago for shore fishing. I didn't put it in the sand and i wash it if it was dunked in saltwater. I didn't see how anyone would need to go through reels so fast if you just take good care of it
