She was right. Sophie's grandfather left her the inheritance. He did not leave it to Mark's kids, as they were not his grandchildren when he passed away.

If he wants his kids to have a trust fund. Then he can start one for his kids. It's not her responsibility for his kids on the trust

Mark: What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine. We're married! So that means any money you have is supposed to go to me and my children, not your child!
OP: And you're not going to do the same for my daughter with your inheritance?
      Mark: Heh, no.
      OP: Divorce.

Most people show their “true colors” when money 💵 gets involved. The inheritance is being held in trust for Sophie’s education needs from her Great Grandpa. It has NOTHING to do with Mark or his kids. He only wants her money!!

Rachel made the right choice for her daughter. Protecting her daughters future is a must. What I could not understand is Mark is a divorced father of two why wasn’t he having a conversation like this with his ex-wife the two of them should be talking about that to secure their children’s future. It’s not up to Rachel to contribute to their future. It didn’t seem like his children were living with them. They were living with their mother. So Mark and his wife are the ones who should be responsible for his children’s future. Man, he should’ve also taken into the cat when she was telling them that this was her grandfather’s wish to help secure Sophie’s future. But he did not hear that because all he could think about was his children weren’t getting a share of the inheritance money.

When I remarried my husband and I agreed to keep our assets separate so that we could each leave our assets to our own kids. The only things I inherited on his death were the joint assets we acquired after our marriage. This worked for us because we both had roughly the same value of assets when we married.

She made the right decision to end the relationship. If the right relationship was there , she’d probably make some kind of trust for his kids. A true blended family loves & takes care of each other. We did. We had a good blended family .

Oh sure, I would just give what was my child’s money to step children. Not. I had a friend that got remarried. When her husband found her legal documents he was pissed that he wasn’t getting her wealth upon her death. Pretty creepy. Why was he looking and why did it bother him? Made her feel like he was planning her demise. She divorced him immediately.

Compromise is important, but Mark couldn't start a trust for his own kids, why should OP? Besides, it didn't sound like Mark wanted to compromise: he wanted OP to handle the financial burdens of his kids while he contributed basically nothing.

Trusts are notoriously difficult to use or get money from because it’s in installments. A simple savings account to transform into a checking account is better. Less paperwork and easier control.

First of all, as far as I understand, an inheritance is not subdued to assets divisions in case of a divorce issue. Secondly, the grandfather that left the inheritance was not related whatsoever to the fiancé's daughters. Besides, Rachel and Mark weren't married yet and had and just that speaks volumes. When referring to the pony for Sophie, Rachel was going to buy it from her inheritance money. If Mark wanted his daughters to have ponies too, shouldn't he pay for them? It seems Mark very conveniently wanted to live off Rachel's money. Eventhough, Rachel suggested they could both pay for the other two ponies, but Mark wanted to guilt trap Rachel. She's way better without such a sly jerk.

Her daughter doesn't "need" the money any more than his children. I don't agree with that statement. I do agree that her daughter should receive the entire inheritance based on the fact the childs grandfather gave it to her. It was grandfather's money to do with what he wanted. Sofie was his flesh & blood granddaughter and he left it to her. Case closed.

Many salutations!!! This is a nice story from a literary and cinematic standpoint; still, I really do not like how divorce is so quickly and frequently resorted to in these stories. (Goes back to rewatch the video) . . . oh damn, Rachel and Mark are not spouses; argh, I feel like the south end of a horse!!
Anyway, I have a solution to fix this mess. Why does Mark not establish an LLC with a commercial credit profile for each of his kids?!? An LLC is not hard to establish and the founding documents can be configured so that Mark and Rachel have operational authority -- exempli gratia, Mark having 25% ownership, Rachel having 15% ownership, and the offspring having 10% ownership --complete with a clause that confers majority ownership to the offspring at a specified point in the future such as the offspring's 20th, 21st or even 25th birthday. I cannot imagine there being a better birthday gift than my own LLC with a hefty commercial credit profile!!
Along the same lines, Mark could also establish a cash-value living benefits whole life insurance policy so that his kids can be their own bank. Such an insurance policy has a lot of start-up inertia so it makes sense for Mark to start on that right now. Heck, Mark could establish several cash value living benefits whole life insurance policies where each of his offspring is designated as the beneficiary and then one where Rachel is the beneficiary along with one where Sophie is the beneficiary for fun. Rachel could reciprocate in kind . . . hey, the whole Rockefeller Family version 2.0 . . . I like it!!!
The only way that this works, though, is if Mark and Rachel get their heads out of their butts and act like adults -- id est, making small Net 30 purchases and paying the bill ASAP without fail. Golden parachute greed has NO PLACE in this.
