Ahhhhhhh… is this for Canada. It’s been $250 in the US. I keep it for the 4X points on groceries & dining? We do not have the Priority Pass in the US. (Don’t think so at least) Great coverage! I always enjoy your content. I really like my Rose gold, but I actually think the traditional Gold is pretty awesome as well. I agree about your Cobalt card structure.
Definitely agree with you that Amex Canada missed the mark on the gold revamp. The MR earn rate should have been adjusted and a dining component added as well. The banks are probably watching this move by Amex and they could potentially re-tool their premium card offerings to make a more attractive product to address what the gold card lacks.

Here's the big issue with the Gold, it's value proposition is severely underwhelming. Compared to the Cobalt the Gold is like even lower then the cobalt.
See my response as there are Tiers of points that no one really talks about and Amex makes vague on purpose but Cobalt points are Tier 3 points aka Select points and can’t be moved to other cards to keep them as MR points. If the travel partners work for you then great, if not then you’re not getting the full value. In the end, you need lots of different Amex cards to get the best bang for you bucks.
Agreed. Amex Canada did not do a great job revamping the gold card. Metal card is a nice touch but the earn rate for MR should have been modified. IMHO there should have been a dining earn component added to the card. Even if that component was a 2x earn it would have drastically improved the card as it is suppose to be higher on the Amex ladder than the Colbalt.
I think if you fly 2-4 times a year this card makes a lot of sense as a supplement to the Cobalt. Cash in those Plaza Premium lounge visits, easily use the 100 dollar travel credit and all that insurance, plus you can probably cash in some Hotel Collection credits if that stays. Personally I think I'll take the year trial at 150, but might also add Cobalt in the meantime. Two fees is a lot but I buy all the groceries for me and two roomates, who each pay a third of the bill back. Effectively $1 spent by me would earn 15 points, or 30%, which is kind of OP..
Even with the 60k sign up bonus I still find the card kind of weak with its benefits and subpar multipliers. I think for me it's either 75k or it'll be a hard pass for me
Canada got wrecked on this card. Not worth it over Amex preferred simply cash or Cobalt. Even the 120$ fee 60k+ annual income bank cards have far better value. Very dissapointing
As an existing card holder, I am not impressed by this $100 credit the first year....we will still be stuck with the $250 after that, and the benefits and earning rate on travel are just not high enough to justify the price. I have heard from one colleague that her metal card (from a different bank) sets off the metal detectors at airports, and as I don't care about the cosmetics, replacing the plastic with metal is no benefit for me. I am not someone who spends a lot in Canada on food and drink, but I do when I travel, and if the travel earning on air fare, hotels and food and drink were increased, I might consider holding onto this when the effective price rises to $250. For now, though I will be looking for alternatives.

I had to get the Gold Business as this card is not available yet and the wife has the Platinum card now so no need for 2 Plats. Only reason I had to get this card is so I can transfer the Plat MR points to Glod MR points and stay at least at Tier 2 lvl. Platinum is lvl 1 and the King on MR lvls. Transferring to Cobalt is Tier 3 or what use to be called Select Points and your limited to the new Airline Partners (no great on hotels or other conversions). We don’t want to convert points yet as not sure how best to use them and we can’t really travel yet and unless you keep paying for the Platinum you’re in a s$&t spot and have to transfer your points somewhere. Thus the Gold card. Going with Gold card, you have more options of conversion partners then others. You can never go back to Platinum and you keep them as Amex MR points as long as possible. If there is a better option, please let us all know as this is the downside of the points games ppl don’t speak too much of.

100k MR points to outweigh the mediocre earnings rate will be more than welcome. Feels like they focused more on the "face" rather than the content. A bit disappointing but let's hope for a better welcome bonus
excited for these changes, especially the additional travel benefits as well as the metal card, as I absolutely love my CIBC Aeroplan VIP card. I am pretty happy with the earn rates, they could have added no FX transaction fee and left the multipliers the same and I would have been totally happy. I think they'll have metal cards ready to send out to new clients and renewing clients when they launch the revamp in October. Probably wait a week after the official launch date and then go online and request a replacement.
So they made it closer to the US Gold but minus the earning categories (the US Gold is similar to the Cobalt but at 4x on restaurants and groceries) but gave it some better travel benefits? Idk seems harder to justify $250 on the CAD Gold especially with the Cobalt being so much stronger now

Hey Ricky! I'm a bit confused with the wording in 2:11 - I just paid my annual fee in the end of July. Does this mean that when my fee posts next July, would I get the $100 statement balance (as well as the $100 Travel Credit)? If not, then I would have had less than 1 year with the new benefits before it renewing at the new rate?
Yes. You'll get a $100 statement credit and a $100 travel credit in July 2022, so in theory it'd only cost you a further $50 to hold another year. After that, you'll be charged the $250 annual fee and get a $100 travel credit every July going forward.
It’s technically still a charge card as there’s no visible limit to the cardholder. The cardholder now just has the option to carry a balance over months while paying interest now

I suspect ultimately it would depend on a number of factors, like your income, debt ratio and credit account ages, as anecdotally I've heard people that have applied for new cards and then received a mortgage shortly after. General rule of thumb is that lenders will be less likely to give you a mortgage if you are seeking credit elsewhere at the same time as it could increase risk, but it would depend on a number of circumstances

Yes - and no it won't be a red flag, it's perfectly reasonable to cancel a hotel reservation
