I was not aware of the controversy about Morell's voice. My family had a subscription at the Met from 1961-1976, and I saw Morell many times ... And I never found him to have a "small voice." In fact, he was a wonderful Duke in Rigoletto and his Cavaradossi was excellent. Granted he was not at the level of a Bergonzi or a Gedda - let alone Corelli - but there's NEVER been anyone at Franco's level!
I prefer his voice a thousand times over Carlo Bergonzi. Morell always hit the notes dead center whereas, to my ears, Bergonzi scooped and slide into the top notes.

A very underrated tenor. He was far better than most realize.

@SHICOFF1 This aria is do so well by him. Not sure other recordings, or live. Seem to be a solid solid tenor at very least!
