      @@andyf While changing my battery...I killed my digitizer because of inexperience but also due to a video that didn’t carefully warn about the 3 connectors... I could see the two smaller cables.. but the wide one was not obvious to me and I damaged it. Thankfully the digitizers are amazingly cheap. I have no doubt... your vid would have prevented my mess up... stay safe...

    Excellent video, made the job easy and since I'm also Scottish, I even understood the nuances perfectly!! Made a bad (and expensive!) error tho, overheated the LCD (broad black line down the centre) when trying to remove the glue, however got a replacement from Accupart (v good supplier!) and all working now. Have since invested in an 'Ifixit Iopener' - reckon heat gun is too powerful. Many thanks

    I got to the part near the end where you put it all together to test before you adhere the new screen. The iPad turns on and says, press HOME button to open. When I press it the screen then goes dark. ☹ Is other anything I can do to make it work properly? Do you have any ideas of where I might have gone wrong? thank you.

    Boy, it this a LONG comment. Sorry. It won't post, probably due to the length, so I will post part of it and then reply to it to get the rest posted. There are three sections, in total.
    Part 1 of 3
    _______________
    Okay, so my iFixit digitizer install kit arrived and I did this repair last night. JESUS, but that was time-consuming. Cracking the seal was nearly impossible for me with this unit. My glass was shattered to bits, so the suction cup would not adhere at all. I have advice for people who have a shattered screen right where the suction cup has to go.
    1. TAPE DOES NOT HELP AT ALL. It is of no use. If the glass is crumbled at that point, no matter if you tape it or not, the glass FLEXES so that you cannot make a seal all the way around.
    2. The iOpener does not work on one of these that has six-year-old adhesive. Apparently, this crap becomes harder over the years. I could not get it hot enough at 30 seconds. (Perhaps my microwave is not powerful enough? I don't know. I just punch the buttons to heat coffee, tea, and soup, and have never altered power settings.) I have three iOpeners. Two were purchased years ago but have never been used. One came with this kit. Okay, honesty time, here. I had one rupture as I struggled to get it hot enough. Yes, that crap got all over my microwave and cart and set me back a half an hour to clean the mess. It is some sort of oil or silicone liquid, and it takes a LOT of dish soap to get it off surfaces. Note that it *does* come off, though. It is just a big waste of time. Yes, I am ashamed of myself. HAHAHA!!!)
    3. I had to use a utility knife with the angled blade sides (not a typical single-edge razor blade, but a genuine utility knife blade, and NOT an Exacto blade, which will snap off in the joint. Very carefully insert the tip between the lip of the aluminum body and the edge of the glass. Forget the stupid suction cup; toss it in the bin.
    4. Once you get a plectrum (guitar pick) into the gap you made using the blade, use the sharp-tipped tweezers that came in the kit. BREAK THE DAMNED GLASS. It won't come off any other way. Just give in, break that shit, and move on.

    [SIDEBAR]
    NOTE: This video and the iFixit tutorial were super helpful for me. Here is a link to the iFixit tutorial:
    www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+Air+Wi-Fi+Front+Panel+Assembly+Replacement/25038
    I read the ENTIRE TUTORIAL and watched THIS VIDEO from beginning to end twice each before attempting this. Once I began I used the tutorial to the end. It typically ends like a Haynes car manual, with the i8rritating "Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly." WARNING: This is not the complete story. At that point, I fired up this video and watched it from 19:12 where the story picks back up. THIS VIDEO IS EXCELLENT, and if doing this again I would keep it open in another tab and go back and forth between the tutorial and video. The photos in the tutorial are excellent, but SEEING it being done by this man is also very important. I would NOT just use the tutorial as you work; consult the video, too, as you go. If you have never removed a shattered digitizer that is glued down monkey-ass tight like this one, you really want to do this. Trust me.

      Part 2 of 3
      _______________
      5. I marked where all the easily damaged bits were with a grease pencil on the clear tape I had on the glass. (Yes, I had to remove the tape where the suction cup goes, then make sure that there was no seam in the tape where the cup attaches. And no, that did not work, either; the glass was just too flexible. Frequently, the tape would just pull off of the glass as it was essentially on pieces the size of sand.) Once I gave up on the suction cup and decided that the glass was TRASH, it became easier to just break it to get it off. All care was taken to avoid damaging the camera, display cables, and the two WiFi antennae. I followed the advice on where to open, in what order, direction, depth, etc. This was great information! Then I took that sharp-tipped tweezers and ripped the damned thing open like it contained a winning lottery ticket. Okay, so I still went really slowly, because I ended up cutting myself. (It was minor; I did not die.) Once I was able to fold that glass open like a book I was ecstatic. My cats must have thought I had lost my freaking mind.
      6. Cleaning up the remaining glass and adhesive took almost as long as removing the digitizer. SHEESH! Note that the micro-shards will embed themselves in your countertop or table. Use care to wipe the surface clean. With that in mind, if this happens and you are sliding your iPad around as you work, you will discover tiny scratches in your nicely anodized Space Gray iPad. TAKE TIME TO INVESTIGATE EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY OF THE CASE FOR GLASS! This is some sneaky-assed stuff. Seriously, do yourself a favor and check for glass bits like ten times as you remove the adhesive. I used alcohol pads for a while. They sucked. Try an alcohol-soaked paper towel or rag. Do not be afraid to get this unit wet; alcohol evaporates very quickly, so it will likely be fully dry by the time you seal it up in the end. If you are worried about this, once you have the unit cleaned up to your satisfaction, let it sit for half an hour to make sure it is fully dried out. I chose to run the edge of a dry paper towel behind each WiFi antenna to soak up any alcohol that might be trapped behind them. Make sure your camera lens is clean, clean, clean. Test everything at the end as this man does, and if the image from the FaceTime camera is blurry in spots, CLEAN IT!
      7. Once the unit is fully cleaned of broken glass and evil Apple glue, reassembly is pretty easy. I did not get my LCD display back in without a few prints, and some micro shards got on the surface. I ended up with three 8 mm scratches or marks *somewhere* and I did *NOT* see them as I closed up the unit. I suspect I somehow touched the inside of the glass as I closed it up, and something made those marks. I don't think they are scratches, but they might be. Either way, they are not much of an annoyance. I had not been able to use this iPad for the last four years. It has lived, forgotten and unloved, in a junk drawer since I broke the glass. Apple would not fix it but wanted about $300 to replace it with a refurb unit. To my way of thinking, that is just stupid. I knew that one day I would do this repair, so I stored it in a place that guaranteed I would forget about it. Eventually, I forgot that I even ever owned an iPad Air. D'OH!
      8. The tip of using the inside glass protective sheet to do a final "dusting" of the LCD is BRILLIANT. I had just put a new tempered glass screen protector on my iPhone and was thinking along the same lines, but I tossed the little sticker used for that. I had not thought to use the one that came on the digitizer assembly. THANK YOU, SIR!
      9. I slipped and got my finger in the fresh adhesive. This marred the flatness of the surface and caused a slight bulge at this point. It is sealed up well enough, but that sort of pissed me off. Oh, well. This was an experiment since I do not *need* an iPad, especially one that is five years old. However, up to the moment that this iPad's glass was shattered, I was using it a lot, so maybe this will happen again. I did some emailing and played some games, read a chapter of my current novel, and then watched "The Doomsday Machine" on Amazon Prime. I had a great and happy evening playing with my resurrected iPad. I texted my wife. I did everything but shatter the glass. (I'll try hard to not do that again.)

      Part 3 of 3_______________
      Thanks for this very helpful video. You saved my bacon at two or three points, and the video was entertaining, as well. I recommend holding off on this repair if your glass is shattered where the suction cup has to be placed in order to crack the adhesive seal UNLESS YOU HAVE SET YOURSELF UP FOR LOTS OF GLASS SHARDS GOING EVERYWHERE. IT IS A TERRIBLE MESS. Also, due to the terrible condition of the glass, my iOpener blowout, and several places where I had to stop and increase the level of my glass cleanup ability, this took me THREE HOURS to accomplish, and not the one or two that iFixit claims. Had the freaking adhesive softened up at all and my glass was merely cracked and not shattered I think I could have done this in about 45 minutes, as I am pretty good at this sort of work. With the adhesive and the bazillion bits of glass (and iOpener blowout), a lot of time was simply wasted. The removal is fairly straightforward, as is the cleanup. Knowing where to open, the order, the physical direction, etc. makes this not too difficult. HOWEVER, the fact that the glass will *always* be broken when this repair is to be done, be prepared for an epic battle royale with the adhesive.
      To help me with the one slight bulge where my finger touched/deformed the new adhesive, I placed the iPad face-down on a towel on the countertop, placed a book on top of it, then placed a 15-pound toolbox on the book. I left it like that for about an hour. Despite the slight bulge, the adhesive firmed up and sealed, and I do not think it will open up over time. This is important! If you have any bulges (that are barely visible and "feel-able") the seal could open up on either side within an hour or so if you do not press it firmly in place and keep that pressure applied for some time. If you do this and the bulge is small enough the seal will be fine, I am told.
      I am excited to have a "new" toy to play with. I am thinking of getting a keyboard case to protect it and make actual typing work less arduous for me and my fat hunter-gatherer fingers. Unfortunately, neither of the new Apple Magic Keyboards for iPad fit this form factor, so I will likely get some craptastic Chinese-made Amazon unit that is about $60US. This unit went down with some flavor of iOS 9 and is now using 12.5.4 which came out just about a month ago. (Nice, Apple! Thanks for the continued support!) There are a lot of new (to me) apps and abilities in this version, and I want to work in MS Word and Excel, as well as Notes and Pages.
      This video made me decide to buy the iFixit kit and give this a try. I was not 100% perfect in my work. I learned a lot using a cheap, old, long-ago-paid-for device and now feel ready to work on other devices with broken glass that is glued to the case. Thanks to the uploader. I will be looking at your other videos, too.
      Thanks for taking time to read all of this. Cheers!

      Wel this is one (or 3) of the most in depth comments/critiques of my work that if ever received, and I’m very great full for it. I don’t do this work any more but I’m glad the videos are still out there helping people.
      Some people do jigsaw puzzles, we burst chemical filled goo pads and stab shards of glass onto our fingers in the name of good fun and keeping our tech going.
      Well done, it’s certainly not a job for the faint hearted!

    There is no way I could have done this without this video. I really am so, so grateful and thank you for putting it together. I did make a major mistake that I should share. I somehow got the home button connector toggle "thing" to disappear. In a blink of the eye it vanished. After literally 2 hours, I found it to only lose it again. (Next time, I am going to lay out a white sheet to work on) And then not knowing it slides onto the connectors, I broke the toggle and then 2 connectors trying to close what remained of the toggle. But damn, who needs a working home button anyways!

    • @andyf
      @andyf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very glad to hear it was helpful to you. I'm not making videos any more but seeing comments like this on old videos is a joy 😁. Are you not able to anchor the home button cable some other way? I've broken those before and used some DIY to refix them. Maybe some sugru or glue or fashion a wee thing to hold it on place? Either way the screen is replaced so at least the initial problem is solved!

  • @Counteam
    @Counteam 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Misunderstand your speaking, no clear voice. Question: after the finish, the End, you must heat thr new glue-tape for better holding? Unclear: How long you must wait, if the glue-tape is fixed?
    I had replaced my digitizer 3x in the last year. But already each replacement, i had problems with the cables on the side, their push up the digitizer from the case.

    • @andyf
      @andyf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessary to heat the tape before re attaching. You need to make sure the ribbon cable is tucked properly before putting the new screen down. When you put it down if it still pops up, try a tiny bit of stronger glue and clamp it for a while.

    Terrible repair man! You needed more heat, use the iSesamo more and not the damn tweezers for separating the digitizer from the frame.

    • @andyf
      @andyf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the tweezers where the iSesame is not the correct tool for the job. It’s not so good for getting in under the strongly adhered glass, the point on the tweezers works great for that. More heat would not be a bad idea, but the heat dissipates quickly I find so you have to work fast and/or get a good initial opening to work from.
      I don’t agree that it was a terrible repair though, it was a very good repair which was difficult due to the amount of cracks along the edge of the digitizer.
      Thanks for the comment man!
