Not even remotely true. Thomas came within a hair of being relieved of his command for delaying in engaging Hood before Nashville, and with good reason. If Hood had chosen to move away from Nashville and head north to raid Union territory, Thomas would have been unable to bring him to battle because his poorly mounted cavalry would have very likely been unable to penetrate a Confederate cavalry screen by Forrest. Instead of grasping a golden opportunity to engage Hood before he could move away, Thomas remained in place while remounting his cavalry. While Thomas's army was by no means completely ready for battle, Hood's army had been repeatedly defeated over the preceding months and suffered from such poor morale that Hood himself stated that he was afraid that a withdrawal might result in the dissolution of the army. The sober truth is that Thomas' career was saved by Hood's obstinate intention to fight yet another battle. Additionally, Thomas deliberately misled (read: lied) to Grant by telegraphing Grant at one point to state that he would attack at once- and then waited days to do so.
George Thomas may have been the best of the lot.
In the American Civil War Commander he has both attack and defence extra points, and he is the only one who has that.
