Few weeks ago i started to read john keegan american civil war. Today I already finished the chapter is called "Breaking into the South".One quote from this chapter: Sherman also wrote: War is war, not a race for popularity. If they want peace, they and their kindred must cease to fight. They cannot describe war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty itself, and it is impossible to ennoble it, and those who brought war into our country deserve all the scorn and curses that the people can heap upon them.

Lincoln brought the nation to war. Even Bruce Catton, a pro-Union historian, recognized that Lincoln repeatedly provoked the South and had no intention of letting the South go without war.
Simply put, the Confederacy lost because: (1) The North was the industrial part of the of the pre-war US while the South was the agrarian (farmers) part of pre-war US (ie the North made stuff and the South made money growing cotton, tobacco and sugarcane. The South grew more cotton than the rest of the world combined. (2) The North blockaded the South so they were unable to sell their cash crops to the rest of the world and prevented importation of the industrial supplies they needed such as weapons and machine parts. (3) The Mississippi River was the main “interstate highway” transportation system used by the South and it divided the Southern states in half. The North gained control of river traffic which prevented roughly 1/2 of the South from supporting the other 1/2 of the South. Of course, it wasn’t quite that simple.
Point 2 is largely relatively didn't work as expected. The South was still able to export both Cotton and Tobacco to import weapons and machine parts at will for most of the war. Point 1 and Point 3 were spot on.

I mean, in a sense yes because automatic fire or something similar was super rare. There was a Gatling gun in service but from my understanding, less than 200 or so were in service throughout the whole Union. Also, during fights, once it got down to it, having hundreds firing muskets and reloading as fast as they can again and again may have sounded like a full auto to an extent Off topic but somewhat related to full auto, in world war 1, the British were able to fire their Lee Enfields fast. The CSA’s troops generally stayed in their own states. If needed in another location, they stayed put. Guys from Virginia did not go to The Carolinas if needed, nor the reverse. Not the case for Union troops, they went where they were needed; at the beginning there was difficulty, but later was more successful. Good clip!
The Army of Tennessee was composed of troops from several States and the Army of Northern Virginia was composed of troops from every Confederate State. What Confederate troops in both armies were reluctant to do was to invade the North. When Lee took the army into Maryland in 1862, thousands of men stopped at the Potomac River and the army that met the Army of the Potomac in September was only about 30000 men, but that 30000 fought the 90000 men of the Union army to a standstill in the bloodiest one day of fighting in American history.

The Union defeated the Confederacy in the American Civil War through a combination of strategies, including: The Anaconda Plan This strategy was developed by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott and adopted by the Union to cut off the Confederacy's access to coastal ports and waterways. The Union planned to surround and squeeze the Confederacy by using a naval blockade and ground troops. Surrender at Appomattox Court House In April 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Had the Civil War ended shortly after Gettysburg, whither slavery? The Confederacy didn't control any territory in Union or border states. Would the Union just have handed back territory inside Confederate states but under Union control, such as Louisiana from Baton Rouge to the Gulf? Wither the territories into which spreading slavery was one of the Confederacy's main reasons for beginning the war? Had hostilities ceased in mid-1863, there would have been a 2nd Civil War within 2 decades. There were only 2 plausible conclusions to hostilities: the Confederacy forcing the Union to recognize its independence, or the Union crushing the Confederacy.
A good video, but some points of correction, I apologize that this will be long, but it's a subject I have studied extensively. I grew up near these battlefields, have walked them, and researched them for nearly three decades. I do hope to see more videos on the battle as it often gets overlooked despite the strategic significance of it on the campaigns in other theaters of the war. 1: Mobile, Alabama is pronounced Moe-Bill, not Moe-Bile 2: There were three Confederate forts that had operations conducted against them during the battle, Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines was beseiged by a force landed on Dauphin Island before the Union Fleet entered the Bay and Fort Powell was bombarded by Union gunboats. 3: The layout of the Battle of Mobile Bay you have is fairly inaccurate. The Union Ironclads(two single turret and two double turret Monitor variants) did not precede the wooden ships into the bay, but rather were to divide their efforts with the two single turret Monitors, which were equipped with twin 15 inch cannon designed to counter the Confederate Ironclad Ram armor were to enter and engage the Ironclad Ram, CSS Tennessee-which is depicted in your video as a wooden vessel. The two double turreted Monitors were to lay off Fort Morgan and subdue the shore battery while the Union wooden vessels entering in line by twos(ship of the line to the starboard and paddle steamer to the port lashed together) the paddle wheelers on the port would be shielded from Fort Morgan's fire and could keep the larger vessels moving-effectively acting as tugboats. The Union vessels would go through the narrow channel between the torpedo(sea mine) field left open for Confederate Blockade runners. 4: The battle plan went awry quickly however as the USS Tecumseh(the lead single turret Monitor) veered to the wrong side of the buoy marking the torpedo field to engage the CSS Tennessee, she struck a mine and sank in under three minutes. This brought the battle line to a halt as the USS Brooklyn, the lead wooden vessel slowed to a stop halting the wooden ships under Fort Morgan's guns at point blank range while the Rebel fleet of the CSS Tennessee, Selma, Morgan and Gaines had cross the T and were firing on the Union vessels. The Union fleet was pinned between a crossfire and suffering mounting damage when Rear Admiral Farragut aboard the USS Hartford-second ship in the line, acted decisively to salvage the situation. He took Hartford around the stalled Brooklyn, through the Torpedo field and the column of wooden vessels followed him. No further mines detonated as they crossed the field due to many of the mines leaking from being under for months, rendering their powder charges worthless. Once in the bay, the fleet moved up, separated their lashed paddle gunboats to deal with the Rebel wooden ships which fled(Morgan), surrendered(Selma) or were scuttled(Gaines) and then the CSS Tennessee charged the Union fleet by herself. After a fierce brawl, Tennessee's steering chains were shot away along with her smoke stack, her gun ports jammed by damage and her Admiral wounded, unable to move, steer or fight, she surrendered. Fort Gaines would surrender quickly, Fort Powell was abandoned due to lacking finished defenses, Fort Morgan was later surrounded by a Union landed force and surrendered after a short siege.

That's a great point - and the tip of a very interesting iceberg. Usually, the General in charge of all forces directs the action from a remote location. Grant decided to accompany the army in the eastern theatre. That had impacts on Meade's ability to command. I've only read a little about it, but it's complicated.
Nitpick The confederates were the ones who started the fire in Altanta, to prevent the Union from using the military supplies there, not Sherman. Sherman's troops fight the fires.
You're absolutely right. In all wars, retreating armies work hard to make sure they don't leave valuable stores for the other forces and they destroy the infrastructure that could slow them down. But it is also true that conquering armies can also do a lot of damage. After the way, the south emphasized the latter (overly much) and minimized the former. And strangely enough, the loser of the Civil War got to write much of its history!
It makes me think that some of this content was automatically generated and not checked by a knowledgeable person. I mean, the content is pretty good ... but it could've been better with one edit by someone who knows something.
I see now that the Confederacy did attempt stateless strategy too. But in the end, the Union forced them to play defensive most of the times. Am I correct about this?
Suffice It To Say: THE UNION SIMPLY HAD MORE MEN AND MATERIAL TO END THIS WAR. ( Even Though It Took 4 Years ) From The Author, Shelby Foote: "I think that the North fought that war with one hand behind its back," said Foote. If the Confederacy ever had come close to winning on the battlefield, "the North simply would have brought that other arm out from behind its back. I don't think the South ever had a chance to win that war." Over Half The Union Army Was On Garrison Duty In The Years1861 to 1864....U.S. Grant Brought Those Garrisons against Robert E. Lee in 1864 and End the Civil War in Less than a Year.
Then again, the war would've probably ended a lot sooner after the Battle of Vicksburg if Montgomery were the capital. Because Grant would be a lot closer to it at the time.

Of course not. The Union Army of the Northern States defeated the confederate states of america (csa) aka the south. Worse strategy. That is why they lost. The north was tactically inferior but strategically superior. The north prioritized navy, diplomacy, and threats to the international community (threatened war against several countries and raising the unpopularity of slavery). The north prioritized logistics and political economy, while the south favored maneuver and operational effectiveness. Very foolish.
@@cal4837 Bull Run was a Cannae. And DC wasn't as fortified like it was by the time 1863 rolled around. Both sides thought it would be one battle to decide the victor. Both were thinking in context of it still being like the Napoleonic era.
@ Cannae was a battle of annihilation .. bull run wasn’t. It was just a poorly fought, single battle. Plenty of armies not involved in it where Cannae was basically entirety of one army vs another. Plus, Slave rebs sucked on the attack every time they invaded throughout the war. They weren’t going to ever take Washington and they knew it. Their only hope was daddy England or uncle France saving them
The South hinged their theories of victory into some really dumb assumptions: That the union would not be committed to the fight. Clearly, killing their soldiers just made the Union angrier and angrier and more committed to win. They also weren't stupid. Allowing the confederates to set up a hostile nation that would have overlapping claims on territory was not a politically viable option. Then, there was that cotton is king dumbasssery. Sure, the UK and France used Southern cotton to keep their textile mills running. But their population was also being fed by grain imports from Union states. The confederates apparently were dumb enough to think one can eat cotton. At no time in the history of the world has anyone faced a national collapse due to textile riots. Bread riots on the other hand often end up with kings losing their heads. France and the Brits were not going to help them. Not unless they found a more strategic reason than acquiring cotton. You can have churches and government provide bread to unemployed workers. But if there's no bread for workers to buy with their money or the price goes up beyond their means, you've got a more difficult problem. Weathering a cotton shortage is nothing compared to dealing with a bread one.
Very few people know (Funny but very few historians!!!!!) India became Crown colony in 1858 so the British government began to increase the raw cotton production in 1858 3 years before the Civil War! The British port city consulates began to give free of charge cotton seeds to the local agricultural producers in the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire and Egypt 3 years before the Civil War. UK wanted to diversificate the World production of the raw cotton 3 years before the Civil War. IT WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY 1864 during the Civil War.
@@avenaoat Great point. The Confederacy compounded their mistake by temporarily boycotting selling cotton to England. That just pushed England to replace southern cotton with that from India.
That was certainly a huge turning point. Historians and general popular history tend to focus on the eastern theatre at the expense of the western theatre, naval action and diplomacy.
I hope you recognize that we are all descended from slave owners. And slaves. How many generations to do you need to go back? I would guess less than 20. But who knows? Aren't "scorched earth" type policies considered war crimes? Just saying, The North seem to use that frequently; almost like they mean't to punish the local polulace en masse. This is typified by Sherman's "March to the Sea" whereby he took non-comabatants as prisoner in order to break up communities and families when he took on the "habit" of deporting residents to random northern destinations. I have never heard of such institutionalized hate and wonton disregard for fellow citizens. Just a thought that nags at me whenever I watch a civil war video. Good production quality. Oh, proof your AI's responses for accuracy.
Sherman did not want to use logistic trains. The Confederate government learnt the Southern people did not eat cotton or tobacco so the cotton plantations began to produce food instead of cotton, So Sherman could march to Savanah without any food resupply. The choice to fight untill December of 1865 in the Tennessee river valley and instead of 750 000 civilian and sodiers dead to reach the 1 million dead in majority in the South the 250 000 dead surplus dead. Gatling gun, Spencer repeating weapon with cooper cartridge, etc,,
The federals attacked any confederate militias they encountered. The siege of Atlanta, from the history of the state of Georgia itself, annotated less than 15 civilian casualties.
The confederate army was outnumbered and outgunned by 5 or 6 to 1. Despite that, they were able to give the union army hell for 4 years and won more than their share of battles. Eventually it came down to numbers, that's why the confederacy lost. If the numbers were just slightly more even, things would be very different today.
It was actually 2:1, and the Union had more territory to hold so it was more evenly matched. The Confederacy lost not because of numbers, numbers alone mean very little compared to the ability to quickly equip and supply troops. The Confederacy had no industry because they invested all their capital into slaves, they had no navy to speak of to import, and they were soundly defeated in the West which meant they would inevitably lose the war.

No it was about slavery. If it was about states rights then they would not have pushed for the fugitive slave laws, which effectively forced slavery upon the North.
That's blatantly false. The south controlled the federal government up until Lincoln was elected. They seceded before he even took office. Before Lincoln was elected, the southern states railed against the northern states for not enforcing the federal fugitive slave laws. Tell me they cared about state rights. That's just lost cause/post Civil War B.S.
Wrong. The South lost due to Grant being a better general than Lee. Lee outmaneuvered Lee and outgeneraled him. Other Union generals had the same advantages as Grant but failed. Oh man! 🤦🏿
Yeah it was.
This sound effect is to represent the various infantry divisions firing their guns at the same time in a simplified way. This is why it may sound like automatic gun
I mean, in a sense yes because automatic fire or something similar was super rare. There was a Gatling gun in service but from my understanding, less than 200 or so were in service throughout the whole Union.
Also, during fights, once it got down to it, having hundreds firing muskets and reloading as fast as they can again and again may have sounded like a full auto to an extent
Off topic but somewhat related to full auto, in world war 1, the British were able to fire their Lee Enfields fast. Having thousands just shooting in a general direction over and over again sounded like a machine gun to the Germans. That's how they described it. It was called the "Man Minute"
It's a sound effect. On a war video grow up
never forget that for the Confederacy, independence was not the most important aim of the war; it was to preserve slavery, that prevented any foreign recognition and resulted in a large portion of their population being fundamentally hostile to the country

None were used at Gettyburg, but they were used at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in 1865.

The Union defeated the Confederacy in the American Civil War through a combination of strategies, including:
The Anaconda Plan
This strategy was developed by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott and adopted by the Union to cut off the Confederacy's access to coastal ports and waterways. The Union planned to surround and squeeze the Confederacy by using a naval blockade and ground troops.
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
In April 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
Final surrender in Galveston, Texas
The final surrender of Confederate troops in the west took place in Galveston, Texas on June 2.

@@DerekHamby CSS Shenandoah was the last on the 23th August 1865, when learnt from a British ship Kirby Smith surrendered!
1: Mobile, Alabama is pronounced Moe-Bill, not Moe-Bile
2: There were three Confederate forts that had operations conducted against them during the battle, Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines was beseiged by a force landed on Dauphin Island before the Union Fleet entered the Bay and Fort Powell was bombarded by Union gunboats.

You’re West Virginia is in red. That kind of defeats the whole purpose of West Virginia’s history if it’s in red instead of blue.
So where's Gen. Meade? The actual commander of the army of the potomac. Not Grant....
That's a great point - and the tip of a very interesting iceberg. Usually, the General in charge of all forces directs the action from a remote location. Grant decided to accompany the army in the eastern theatre. That had impacts on Meade's ability to command. I've only read a little about it, but it's complicated.
Nitpick
The confederates were the ones who started the fire in Altanta, to prevent the Union from using the military supplies there, not Sherman.
Sherman's troops fight the fires.
In Richmond also the Lee's Army made the fire!

The Union had the navy to blockade Confederate ports, it had three times the population, industry and railroads.
ummm … West Virginia was not a Confederate state. It seceded from Virginia because it did not want to secede from the Union.
Alteast my favourite State NY joined the Union

If the Confederacy had kept their Capital in Montgomery, the war in Virginia would have looked very different.
Then again, the war would've probably ended a lot sooner after the Battle of Vicksburg if Montgomery were the capital. Because Grant would be a lot closer to it at the time.

Worse strategy. That is why they lost. The north was tactically inferior but strategically superior. The north prioritized navy, diplomacy, and threats to the international community (threatened war against several countries and raising the unpopularity of slavery).

Gatling gun, Spencer repeating weapon with cooper cartridge, etc,,
The federals attacked any confederate militias they encountered. The siege of Atlanta, from the history of the state of Georgia itself, annotated less than 15 civilian casualties.
The channel is called "Knowledgia", but the narrator can't seem to pronounce Mobile, Alabama. Werid? Werid.
Ok? Sounds like it just stupid even try to rebel. Waste of lives cuz confederates were stubborn

WE LAG FAR BEHIND CHINA AND EUROPE IN OUR RAIL TRANSPORTATION OF PEOPLE; and have unsafe, barely adequate freight railroads. USA=😞, soon😵
You are right but the Navy was also important and the steam boats. Grant campaigns, Scott's Anaconda plan and New Orleans was done by Navy!
The south should of kept fighting
Why they had already lost. Why waste lives

@@SquidMonke4 keep fighting ya never know.... thing could of turned around fight till you can't fight no mo'
Never forget that for the south the war was about state rights prevailing over federal rights
The state’s rights to what. Which states rights were they fighting for that the union banned. 😊
No it was about slavery. If it was about states rights then they would not have pushed for the fugitive slave laws, which effectively forced slavery upon the North.
That was the lie told to the Dixie boys by their plantation owning, slave holding officers.
They are still here living amongst us...those MAGA

The Union won by Grant's mere brute force
Wrong. The South lost due to Grant being a better general than Lee. Lee outmaneuvered Lee and outgeneraled him. Other Union generals had the same advantages as Grant but failed. Also, Lee not only had a higher casualty and KIA rate but had more casualties and KIA than Grant in sheer numbers. Lee was the true butcher.
