Gregory Porter is one of my favorite singers and I didn't think I'd see him with Jacob Collier. For his part, Jacob Collier is undoubtedly one of the best musicians of recent times. I think that since Stravinsky or Piazzola someone like that has not been seen.
Miles Davis? Keith Jarrett? Bill Evans? John Coltrane? There have been many great musicians since Stravinsky to match this level of musicianship and vision
@@piotrzdunek7282they are definitely phenominal but there is a dangerously small border between what makes a musician flawless and what makes them legendary, I think that's what's in discussion here. @@lazulicdm jacob would say john and miles are better. miles ahead ;), the factors of being a great musician is not only about skill (which jacob MORE than has) but also influentiality and songwriting. i personally think for that reason they are better. the songs and musicianship are a whole other level. jacob (at this age) is a little bit of a show off, and tends to lean for the hardest possible things in music, (which ofc miles and john etc also did) but they didnt utilise it in their songs. simplicity is nearly always better than extreme complexity as it contains a form of beauty and catchiness you just cant get with playing the bebop scale at 218 bpm. i however do think that jacob is scarily good and will only become better and mature later in his career. at that point, he probably will be better than the greats.
OMG….THIS IS OUT-FREAKING STANDING. WOW!!!!!! I had to hold back the tears of joy for how beautiful this new rendition of a classic comes off. Whew!! Two super talented cats. I just hope there is a forthcoming album or more singles like this at the very least.
and how deep is it ? he missed the note lol. that a B2 or there abouts... typical error of people who cannot sing low but try - they just change the timbre and not the note. Gregory was half an octave lower and then he goes up to fourth octave ... so 2 octave range is actually pretty weak - but most songs don't call for more... it rarely sound good anyway.
@@agnidas5816 Collier and Porter have wildly different approaches to singing. Collier tends to be very clean with his notes, Porter tends to be a bit more free and hovering in both tonality as timing. There is a strong difference in how they are shaping their notes, it is however the same F2 note. Jacob then does a run up to D5, making it 2,5 octaves, but it's a bit silly to assume that this is his total range... Or to make a point about his range, because who cares. It's perfectly fine to prefer Porter over Collier. They're both quite individual and therefore slightly polarizing musicians, but music isn't a contest.
C’est magnifique. Jacob a une voix laiteuse, des changements d’octaves sont impressionnants. Gregory est magnifique et magique. Merci Messieurs et Bien à Vous et à Nous Tous ! 🙏🏽🍀🎄🏆💫
match made in heaven! two of my fav musicians and one of my fav christmas song!😊 i'm the luckiest human being that i've had the amazing opportunity to saw both of them in real life concert in Budapest! 🥰
Best combo I could ever imagine, beautiful, from heart and professional. Gregory technique working with that microphone is just something that many singers just don`t do, or just ignore. Perfect balance in distance between source and microphone, all the time.

gotta say.. This is two geniuses.. doing each of their thing, each on their own. I think it sounds a lot like they haven't rehearsed much together. Not taking any talent away from either, but the combination doesn't work right here, I think.
Both artists enjoy improvising. It's quite rare for them to duplicate a performance. Clearly they've rehearsed enough. There's still a bit of exploration and a slight bit of tension as is ok with improvisation. It all comes together and I really enjoy the different textures their styles and voices bring.
@@Bebop_2962 That's what's exciting with music, I think. In my perspective they don't come together at all and yours they do - proof that it's just at matter of the ears listening!
Gregory Porter wore the hat to hide some scalp injuries, and he hasn't been seen in public without it since. He might feel uncomfortable since he had surgery and had to wear a hat, but now that his injury has healed, he might appear normal wearing a hat. The hat is a Kangol Summer Spitfire with a strap that has been adjusted.
For all of his public appearances Gregory wears his now famous hat to cover up scars he has from surgery. The musician calls the flat cap his "security blanket" and refers to it as his “jazz hat.”
If he wasn't famous ... just randomly wailing ... and with technique that you cannot hear without a mic cause he is doing it QUIET... most of y'all can do it you just don't have a microphone around.
Jacob Collier is obviously insanely talented, but he seems to be unable to play and sing a song in a straightforward manner. His wacky vocal embellishments and flourishes add nothing to the song, it’s just musical masturbation.

I once heard it said that Jacob plays his voice like an instrument, and I really think that’s the best description of his singing I’ve ever heard.
Jeez Jacob's vocal range is insane! And that piano playing, genius... he blows my mind every single time!
In his purity of voice and sensitive piano virtuosity - Jacob can stray into genuine Nat King Cole territory whenever he wants to and pull it off.
Interesting hat choices

Jacob was insane in this. He's so good.

I think the commenter definitely meant jacob, as he goes from way deeper to way way wayyy higher then his counterpart

This plays like a skit about 2 musicians each trying to play the last note in a song😂
For real, everything jacob collier does sounds like he's trying to one up everyone.
