The portable painter classic was my first palette and holds my Daniel Smith watercolors. All the new pans for it is very exciting. I don't have the micro yet, but with the new quarter pan system, it has become quite tempting. I'm glad you highlighted that the pans are not interchangeable between the two palettes. I had not realized that. It is a good detail to know!
Lol. Seriously, I’m so excited to see what the Portable Painter guys are up to now! It just costs more than I’m willing to spend on an empty palette - I paint at home mostly, and am okay with using disposable paper cups or waterbrush plus sponge. I love that they removed plastic between pans to make more paint fit! I’d love to be able to buy palettes with those quarter pans! Tiny little pans for my waterbrush, for my tiny little paintings! Lol.
Wow! I always learn something when I watch your videos. Today I learned my portable painter pallet has a brush that, if you pull on it, it’s actually TWO brushes! LOL! Geez! I never knew!
What great updates they’ve made. I travel to my backyard to paint, it feels like packing for a trip sometimes. Have a wonderful time at the beach, sounds like such fun! 🌺
That tiny palette can now have 16 colors if you use the quarter pans that you put in the larger one..... That's actually a game changer right there, that tiny palette takes up barely any space in my bag and can go anywhere with me.... Just bring a water brush to the party and I'm set!
Great call to add granulating colors to the larger palette! I was intrigued with your original Micro choices, they looked so pastel and springy in your mixing chart, but it did a great job on the urban sketch you did.
Well, you got me! This just looks so darn versatile that I ordered the classic plus. You sold me with the thought of sitting on the couch with basically everything available in a small footprint! Thanks and I hope your vacation is fabulous!
When I got the email, I ordered the new pans and the micro immediately. The micro is so darn cute. I shaved some DS sticks into the quarter pans - they crumbled a bit, but I just added a couple of drops of water and the pieces dried all stuck together. I’ve added one of those microfiber wristlets to dab off my brush, way easier than trying to hold onto a paper towel or rag. Added bonus, they work fantastic for their intended purpose of keeping water from running to your elbows when washing your face!
If you don’t want to buy another one of those microfiber wrist palettes when yours wears out you can always use the top part of an old cotton sock. That’s what I use and it works great.
Hi Lindsay Thank you for the info on the new Portable Painter portable palette. Don’t worry about sounding like a sales pitch- I don’t think that at all. Several TH-cam artist use and recommend the classic and I have been thinking about getting one. So glad to learn about the plus before making a purchase. I like the plus for all the same reasons you do. Thank you
Have a GREAT time on your vacation! Can't wait to see what you paint. If possible, when you get home I would LOVE to see some urban sketching, PLEASE!! GOD BLESS!
I got a used travel game at a thrift shop for 2 bucks that has two ends similar to the water containers - I made a folding desk top that has holes for them to fit in the ends so it will sit on my knee ... I put magnets on the desk top and it is so handy! Ny palette sticks to the magnets - inventing travel gear is FUN
You are so so clever! I appreciate the fact that you put so much thought about how we can use things! Your enthusiasm is inspiring and uplifting! I really hope you have a fabulous vacation. I started to say restful, but then I remembered you were also chaperoning😜. In my former life, I was a band mom. HOO boy🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So looking forward to your Sat chat about this!
Looks like that Cheap Joe's round #12 is currently $14.49. They offer a five-brush set that includes it, Starter Set II, that costs $52.59. Their site's navigation always leaves me uncertain - have I found the best option or not? - so if anyone's interested, reinvestigate! I hope you're loving the beach, Lindsay! Thanks for thinking of us.
Fancy palettes don't dictate the fun but they sure add to it! I was happy to have a coupon and bought one of each of the max kits altho I already own them. I paid $60 for the Classic Plus Kit PLUS the Micro Max Kit, and that included shipping (which was free). That's a STEAL for me! Totally worth it.
“I love travel palettes, I collect them. I have a problem.” I love this. I have the same problem as well. And maybe you do need to buy 5 more colors. Makes total sense. And maybe I have to buy these portable painter palettes and some sticks. And the travel brush set. I have a couple of Escoda Versatil travel brushes, but they seem to be losing their points.
Hope you’re having fun on your vacation! So great that they came out with the different size pans for the portable painter palettes, looks awesome! Thanks Lindsay!
I have to say those are pretty nifty travel palettes! Thanks for sharing this video, lots of people will be interested in buying them for sure. Hope the beach was nice and relaxing. 🌞
It is nice that they give you some support from your dedication to their product! Even if your not paid it is nice to have a relationship with a company that makes a great product! I am glad your enjoying your time off I saw the post of the beach painting on Instagram! Just breathtaking!
I love my portable painter. It was one of my first palettes and I even used it up on my desk. I love that they updated it for more paint colors! Thanks for showing us! I hope your vacation is awesome and that you get lots of painting time!
I still havn't broken down and bought the portable pallet. I almost did when I found one on sale about a month ago. I'm glad I didn't because I want the mini with those tiny pans! I tend to paint small I love painting the artist trading card size. When I plain are paint I'm in my wheelchair and I'm a big girl so I don't have much lap. The micro would be perfect for me! I'm really excited by those quarter pans!
I love these! Thank you for sharing these with us. Your frugal ideas are great but these travel boxes are really cute. Happy vacationing. It is steaming hot in IL.
I hope you have a great vacation. Yes, buying more watercolor sticks to fit in your pans is totally justified as long as you use them once or more a year.
I really want those new pans for both my micro and portable palettes! I saw this video when you first posted it, but I'm watching it again, so I figured I should leave another comment, lol. Anyway, thank you again for sharing, much love ❤
I love love love my portable painter, and hadn't heard about the new pans. Game changer! Thank you so much for the update! I always wished they held just a couple more colors, so I didn't have to switch out pans or carry both of them.
I’ve had the Portable Palette since it first came out. I am so happy to be able to put 6 more pans in the brush slot. Just ordered. Thanks for the discount code.
So by the way if your pallet gets stained you can clean it with the hand cleaner that has pumise in it that you get in a hardware store for construction workers and mechanics. It works great.
OMG!!! I am so excited. I have been using the portable painter and LOVE it! I added extra dots of several colors into the paint brush section and will love getting the new pans!!! I also have two colors in each pan of the Micro painter.. The new pans will be nice to keep the colors separated. Need to go to the website right now!!!!
You're so funny on how excited you are about these travel palettes. I refuse to enable you by agreeing you should buy five more Daniel Smith sticks lol.😁
Very nice review and comparisons. I made a little palette from an eye shadow case, but the paints were cheap Joann's and crumbled bad. Haha! Live and learn. They worked okay from the tubes, but to store in a palette not so much. Thanks and enjoy your vacation!
Thank you for the info! I really like both of the palettes, so I need to get both of them, right? Right. Yeah, I really like this -convenient- distinguished way of applying logic. 🧐
I just bought the classic on Amazon. I didn't realize they made an expansion pack. Before I saw your video I considered trying hot glue divider lines in the paint brush slot.
Whelp, that just cinched it. I was trying to decide between a Windsor & Newton travel palette or filling one of these, and now I’m off to Portable Painter to finally bite the bullet. Those little pallets look perfect to add some gouache and maybe a piece of an ink stick. So excited! UPDATE: darnit, I just HAD to go back for the micro palette with custom pans, too. 16 colors in a tiny palette?! That’s incredible! I think it’s going to become a portable ink palette, and that little brush from the original is going to go well with it, too. Glad I at least have a coupon code to sooth my sheepish conscience 😏. And HEY! Free shipping to Alaska! That’s so incredibly rare, I just had to go back!
I absolutely love the Portable Painter Micro. I grabbed the custom pans a couple of weeks ago and just need to settle on a color palette and configuration. However, would the slot pans for the classic happen to fit the brush slot on the Winsor and Pocket Sketcher's box? That would make my day if they did! Thank you so much for sharing this!
They are to big for the cotman 12 and There pocket box I have sadly. You could trim down some plastic (packaging or an old gift card) and superglue it in to make dividers tho.
Great, now I'm just waiting until they make 36 pans 🤣 on a more seriouse note happy to see that improvement, now all I need to do is buy two and I can actually go outside. No matter how it sounds this upgrade makes me pretty happy.
Yay!!! My Favorite! I do have a small old movie reel metal case I’m trying to fit some paint into. Hoping those little small dots are for sale! Totally adding to the brush holder. Good idea for my old Windsor and Newton mini 12 set! I wonder if hot glue would work, to lay down three little separating “lines” in the brush holder. I’ll Terry later! Thx 🙏🏻
Test if your metal case will hold magnets! I use over sized "altoids" tins (5ish by 7ish) and glue magnets to the bottom of my pans to make it easier to pull them out to fill, or change them around. I also discovered that if I put regular clear gift wrapping tape from one long side, across the bottom, to the other long side, I can write on the tape, glue the magnet to the bottom and if I decide that I need to change the paint in that pan I can peel off the tape (even years later!) and I don't have to scrub the ink off with alcohol! I did it to a couple of pans back in 2016 and it stayed on until just a few days ago when I was washing out some old pans to reuse. I wish I had done it to All my pans now!
Thank you for this video update on the palettes. I have been looking at the micro for a while but just wished it could hold a few more colors than 6. Now it does! So that means I have no excuse now to not buy the paints I have been looking at. I have a palette that needs to be filled! Also I used your code so I helps you like it helps us ❤️
Love this review!! It's so helpful to find out what professionals really like. Do you happen to know if the Inktense Half Pan Paints would fit in this palette? I ask because you have done a great job of mixing and matching in other videos. Thanks so much for your time!
I have a portable painter. Filled mine with DS paints. I don’t have the micro. I’ll have to think about that one. I like the way you can clip it on to a sketch book. I liked your soft white mesh pouch that held all your extra supplies. Do you happen to remember where you got it? Thanks for another great video.
The portable painter is too big for my travels.. so I use a small tin and will fill it with the split primary from Daniel Smith.. and add some turquoise from old Holland and my favorite smincke Paynes gray. The agave paper from hanhemulle also come in a tiny size which is great for traveling.
We’re under a heat advisory here in north Florida . I would love to be able to paint on location but it’s dark by the time it’s comfortable enough to go outside.
You can also use shavings of inktense pencils on the mini or caran dash shavings or pieces of caran dash in the mini then you bring both palette with u and you can do mixed media style painting for layering have fun on vacation....mikelle art mom🎨👩🎨✍
Thanks for this extensive review, Lindsay! I wonder if the new brush slot pans would fit in the brush slot in the Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box. They come with a flimsy brush I don't use (I heard your rant during the review of the field box 😂, I hear you) So all that space is wasted. Do you think you could test if they fit? It would make the small Cotman Sketcher Box quite a lot better. By the way, I am trying to get the extra brush slot pans from Portable Painter (thanks for the coupon!) but apparently they don't ship to 🇪🇺🇩🇪. I reached out to them to see if this is the case or if it is a website glitch 🤞. Love your enthusiasm for this palette!
Hmmm. I really like the mini. I feel like I would knock the classic off the table or bump it somehow😂 I like the mini -esp. that I could hold it with that finger brace thing. Yay! Ok might just have to go for it❤️
@Lindsay I also found a palette by Zeesoon called Triple Pan WC palette for Mijello. No idea what the name has to do with anything but it has a grid that holds the pans in. About $16. on amazon.
I do love my portable painter, it’s so clever, BUT I still produce the same rubbish.🤣 like the changes. The micro is sweet but not for me. Great fun review.
Thank you Lindsey ordered the inserts for my painter and so glad you don't have to buy the whole thing. Do you know of any round pallettes? My idea is that I bought the Ferrero Rocher candies for my husband and wouldn't they make a beautiful palette? You are my go to for questions like that as your are on top of everything. BTW Loved you gummies
@@thefrugalcrafter they are nice palettes, some find them a bit on the pricey side, but I have a couple and like them very much. But if you already have one that works for you, stick with it I say. Cheers! :)
Thank you for the fine video. I am a beginner and I have the the Portable Painter with the water cups. I have not used it yet and I did buy Daniel Smith Essentials kit and some other colors. I carefully copied your color arrangement but you never mentioned what the color is to the left of the Burnt Sienna...could you please advise me? thank you
Oooooo I already have both the portable painter and the mini but I don’t have those new pans which I’m very interested in. Do the pans fit in the old portable painters both mini and the larger one, if you know what I mean.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you very much! I tend to keep a couple of them filled and sitting around my art room, because I"m too lazy to fill a cup with water and use a "real brush"!
I have ds sap green under sea green and I thought moss green, I find I reach for moss green more. Didnt expect that. My thee yellows, yes three Im fancy like that, Hansa Yellow deep, Gambouche and naples yellow, last one mixes awesome skintones and glows so pretty with florals I couldnt resist and swopped out the ds uin gold bc it just didnt do it for me anymore. I have burnt sienna; unlike darker version i realy like the sennelier one and a dark brown; be that transparent brown or burnt umber. For my reds sennelier red and vermillion. Blue; ultramarine, cobalt teal and indigo. I have some of billy shovvel her pinks and purples. What can I say. Im a botanical geek. My favorite go to practise palette; white nights the set of 36 oh and my new favorite; warm grey and white. That warm grey is awesome for soft splatter.
I really want the Micro Max Kit, but I can't find anywhere that ships to the UK :-( I can get the standard Micro with the 6 half pans, but it's the custom quarter pans that are the real selling point for me
i have tons of tube watercolors, can I squeeze from the tubes and let it dry then reactivate it onsite? Also can i waterdown tube paint and use it to refill watercolor markers.
Depending on the brand, you may want to add a drop or two of glycerin to each pan. Daniel Smith, M. Graham, most Schmincke (but not all!) will not crumble and fall out of their pans but you have to watch the student to mid-grade stuff.
It’s always nice to find brands that actually listen to feedback and improve already great products

@UCPy9M4i8_P5j0sMZg8rd6Rw there’s no double layer of plastic between colors - single layer cause it’s connected. Possibly thinner layer? It all helps.
Brilliant design. I love the addition of the row for different sized pans !

I tried, they don't fit inn The sketcher box
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks, Lindsay! I should have known that you would try! 😃
You do talk fast - love it - keep up the good videos!
Hmmm. I really like the mini. I feel like I would knock the classic off the table or bump it somehow😂 I like the mini -esp. that I could hold it with that finger brace thing. Yay! Ok might just have to go for it❤️
You might be able to put inktense blocks into the mini portable painter....
I think the Portable Painter would be great if they had a bigger brush, like your Miller's brush.
@Lindsay
I also found a palette by
Zeesoon called Triple Pan WC palette for Mijello. No idea what the name has to do with anything but it has a grid that holds the pans in. About $16. on amazon.
I saw that last week. Looks intersting.
I almost bought the one I linked a few days ago! 😅
Wait, did you just say "from a kayak"? Do you paint while kayaking? So cool!
Yup!
Can you get the pans for the classic for brush spot, or do you have to get the plus
Yes, they are sold stand alone.
The quiller palette is round in a square. The robax palettes are round.
@@thefrugalcrafter do you have a link?
I guess I asked it wrong I meant round pans.
@@GcOGc01981 oh, not that o know if
@@thefrugalcrafter thank u and BTW I love your red hair it love marvelous.
Wondering... are those two different cobalt teals in the two port painters?
Yes, one is a cobalt teal and one a cobalt turquoise
This palette looks nice, and it sounds like it really works well for you. Just out of curiosity, have you tried the travel palettes from Art Toolkit?
I haven't
@@thefrugalcrafter they are nice palettes, some find them a bit on the pricey side, but I have a couple and like them very much. But if you already have one that works for you, stick with it I say. Cheers! :)
Thank you for the fine video. I am a beginner and I have the the Portable Painter with the water cups. I have not used it yet and I did buy Daniel Smith Essentials kit and some other colors. I carefully copied your color arrangement but you never mentioned what the color is to the left of the Burnt Sienna...could you please advise me? thank you
It's dioxizine violet. I use it in really dark shadow mixes:)
Thank you @@thefrugalcrafter
Oooooo I already have both the portable painter and the mini but I don’t have those new pans which I’m very interested in. Do the pans fit in the old portable painters both mini and the larger one, if you know what I mean.
Yes, the slim pans fit the original classicand the divided pans fit the micro
Just perfect and very great news. I’ve just looked on Amazon and Jackson’s, can’t find any here in the U.K.. 🤨
Just passing by to say Hello now getting impulse to buy travel paint set at Michael
And I don't even paint 😄. At least not very well 😆
Hi, Lindsay, Have you ever done a review of the Derwent Push Button Waterbrushes? I would love to see one! Thanks!
They are great, probably the best waterbrushes, but I don't use waterbrushes much.
That warm grey is awesome for soft splatter.
where do you get the pans for the brush slots? cannot find them omline.
Portablepainter.com use coupon FRUGAL for 10% off. I think they are the only place to get them now. Hopefully blick will stock them.
Looks great, don’t ship to NZ so a no go for me. Thanks for the review I enjoyed it.
Do you have a friend in the US (or somewhere else that they ship to) who can order it, then ship it to you?
I really want the Micro Max Kit, but I can't find anywhere that ships to the UK :-( I can get the standard Micro with the 6 half pans, but it's the custom quarter pans that are the real selling point for me
I bet Jackson's will carry them eventually
Cannot find the small pans in Europe 😢
Hi, Can you send a link for the Cheap Joe’s travel brushes you are using. Thanks
www.cheapjoes.com/miller-s-pseudo-sable-travel-brushes.html
Just behave!!!!! Signed Mewslis wallet!
I love my portable painter. I did not get a bag with mine however…😞
My first one didnt have a bag. It's new
i have tons of tube watercolors, can I squeeze from the tubes and let it dry then reactivate it onsite? Also can i waterdown tube paint and use it to refill watercolor markers.
Yes to refilling the palette, no to markers.
Depending on the brand, you may want to add a drop or two of glycerin to each pan. Daniel Smith, M. Graham, most Schmincke (but not all!) will not crumble and fall out of their pans but you have to watch the student to mid-grade stuff.
