This was a great video and I appreciate you giving such an honest review of the Zen pallet. Also, I couldn't help but laugh out loud when you started sniffing the paint, and then you said "I think I need to go smell my Masters Touch paints now...."!! 😆 🤣 But honestly, that happens to me A LOT. I smell something and it beings me right back to my childhood. Especially cabbage patch dolls and some other types of baby dolls. It's strange in a way, isn't it?!? Oh yeah and some art supplies totally bring me back to my childhood school days. I can distinctly remember the smell of those huge white jugs of school paste. Anyone remember that?!?! Did your teacher also scoop a big blob of it out and put it on a scrap piece of paper for you? We had to use our fingers to apply it? LOL 😂😂 Ohhhh those were the days, huh??!!
This palette looks so cute! You go down a dangerous road, Lindsay! XD I try to never search watercolors on Amazon! I’d be too tempted by all those nifty palettes! 😍😍😍 thank you for the in-depth review!
So I am not the only one who remembers something in the middle of the night and gets excited! 😄Now I write it down because I will have forgotten again by morning!! That pallet is so cute,I love the little chicklets of color!!!👍😃👋
I have been using these paints for a couple months now when I am traveling for work and I absolutely love them! I actually bought a flask on Amazon with a collapsible glass stored in it to get around the lack of water cup.
Love the look of this pallet, just the flow and how bright the colours are reminds me of my peerless paints, paint comes on sheets of paper definitely ink based these baby’s, the paints you tried look and act a lot like these, things that make you go himmmmmm. Hope your holiday is going well and thanks for the look at these paints and one very funky fun looking travel pallet.
I'm going on a long trip in a couple of months and have been thinking about what I could bring so I can do some art. This fits the bill perfectly! I'm so glad you reviewed this set. I love how vibrant the colors are--your flowers turned out beautiful. Thanks for reviewing this.
Thank you Lindsay, I LOVE your reviews. Also, thank you for the heads up in your Sat Chat because I clicked your link and snatched these up. I too have a travel equipment addiction! God Bless
I bought this a couple of weeks ago, for the cute palette and brushes, plus there was a $15 off coupon when I purchased it. The setup is quite unique, the plastic is in good quality, and I love the brushes. But the paints, they are not very good. Most of them looked ok when wet, but dried quite dull. Yellows and reds are not too bad. But I dislike the earth tones. Burnt sienna is too orangy, and the umbers felt like dirt, muddy and opaque. And sap green, very disappointing, one of the worst sap greens I have ever tried. The paint blocks are larger than usual and won’t fit in half pans. But, a half pan will fit perfectly into the paint slot! So I will probably swap out these paints with my own in half pans. As Linsey said, $25 is worth the palette itself, and I bought it for the palette anyway. So I’m not complaining. Overall, I second Linsey that the price with the coupon is worth the palette itself. Paints? Nah, they are no good.
Love the design of this - the brush stand is great - and a wide range of brushes too! It would make such a nice gift for someone. Thanks for showing us this. :)
GUYS THERE IS A $10 OFF COUPON ON AMAZON RN! Oh WOW this is soooo cool! I love it! I've had a Windsor and Newton plein air watercolor travel kit, I think it came with cotman pans but I've refilled with tubes of White Knights, Mission Mijello, regular Windsor and Newton and it was very easy to do so. It's my tried and true but it's simple. Which is good and bad. I've been trying to branch out of the comfort rut I get myself into which helps to expand my art as well. So I would love to try this! Thank you Lindsay! You always find the gold deep within Amazon's dark pages!
Oh that’s so cute! And it comes with brushes…what a cool set! (Telling myself I don’t need this set but those short handle brushes are calling my name, lol).
I had just gotten this! Love it- its a great little kit but I still use the Silver Brush travel Black Velvet brushes. One of them fits in the pencil slot. I think they smell like old fashioned school paste/glue that used to come in jar with a paddle attached to the lid.
The one that smells like almond? I can get an Italian equivalent here in Italy....called Coccoina. They also produce notepad with the same evocative smell.
Love your gerbera daisies! I’ve painted the one you did quite some time ago a few times and it always turns out great. This palette looks really nice, thanks for the in depth review!
Thanks for the review. I've considered this one a long time ago for my "it's not that bad if something happened to it while I travel" watercolor palette. I like the design but I can't deal with the smell and I'm really not convinced now that I've seen the paint in action. I'm glad I settled for Meiliang instead but this one would probably be great if you switch the pans.
Lindsay Weirich happy vacation. The pans look bigger than half pans, maybe I missed you talking about the size of the pans??? I love that you tell us about each color within the palette and giving us your experience and opinions on the products, thank you for your time and talents. And Happy Grad for your two young women. Congratulations!
I've heard of these but didn't know it was a self contained setup! 6 paints as single pigments isn't super good but the colors are very decent and blend well. As for that acetate piece, it's for putting on your paint swatches after they dry so that people can protect them from future water damage. Great set of paints, and loved your review! 🥰
Great review! The shape of the pans and shape + layout remind me a little of the swivel palette you recently set up for gouache. I ordered one of those and really like it -it’s such a great deal.
The acetate looks like you need it to keep the brushes clean when they fold over the paint. Maybe the double-ended brushes you cut in half years ago would fit in this kit.
Thanks for all the great info...looks like a nice travel palette to have. It wouldn't matter what paints you use, your paintings always turned out beautifully! Makes me want to break open my paints...it's been awhile. Hope you're having fun on your vacation!
So funny about your smell nostalgia! I get that a lot I think I have a good smeller. It was a shock to lose my sense of smell post Covid, but it’s mostly back now. Oftentimes I’ll get nostalgia deja vu smells of things like new baby doll, (from the 50s and 60s), summertime tan lotion of the old days (Coppertone and Sea & Ski), Jean Nate, cut grass, bbq smoke, pitch on pilings by a River levy or ocean pier, ocean breeze and tropical flowers. I’m sensing a theme there! Lol
I agree, I was looking at that set, so cleverly designed! I will resist this one tho, but am really enjoying my new Sennelier palette that was half-price, for 18 half pans! they are delicious paint, I don't understand why they don't include a nice basic Yellow Ochre, but hey . and too many reds, red goes a long way!
If you have the information for a free mini sketchbook, do it. It is a cute book. It is about 7"x5" with smooth paper. Good for sketches, but probably not watercolor.
They really don’t look like normal watercolors in the pans. They remind me of the kids crayola sets. The smell I thought of when you mentioned a kids art classroom was also tempura paint. Thank you for always mentioning odors. Its so helpful for those of us who are sensitive to them.
Each column has a colour family, this is a clever layout (and not something I have seen before like this). I only noticed this as I am rewatching this video. Sadly, this palette is not available in 🇩🇪 yet and it is sold out in 🇬🇧. Colours seem really nice. As always, thanks Lindsay for your sleuthing attitude about the origin of the paints. It was fun to hear you trying to locate the smell!
I think it's the smell of watercolor starch. We, in India, use paints that generally always smell like nostalgia. Like a room filled with watercolor paints!!!!
Love the review, thank you, Lindsay! I had already purchased the palette but didn't notice any odor when I swatched the paints. I just went back to take a sniff. Oddly, mine smell like Band-Aids! LOL I think that officially counts as a childhood scent!
I think they’re cotman watercolours. Their watercolours are those shape of ‘chunks’, not poured into the pan. They’re very consistent, pigmented enough, but a touch boring. They’re a bit annoying because if you drop the palette all the little chunks fall out of their pans.
@@karenneill9109 firm and have a syrup like consistsncy and these don't and these have a smell unlike cotman so I think think they are similar. The are more like koi or kohinoor in my opinion

@@karenneill9109 😆 the shape of these are very different from other brands. They are bigger than half pans. They are very inky. I actually was pleasantly surprised as mainly wanted this for the palette. The bug puzzle is that they are Korean. I only know of 3 Korean paint makers and they are not similar to shinhan, mjello or mungyo.
Love the palette tho I might want to cut some of my own brushes down (since I usually dont work with a brush smaller than a 10 or 12) and I def would replace the paint- def love the palette for sure! I love your new review format!!! Yes!! Great video and thanks so much for sharing...💜💚💙
I think that this set of watercolors for travel is much better than the ones I have bought, made in China... because they have complete brushes, I have two sets of watercolors, and they only have one or two water brushes, included... It seems that the palette is also very rich in colors, but, I think is better for sketchbook, and practicing, if the infirmation, is not credible...Thank you Lindsay for this review ❤️
I actually saw this palette a week ago and considered it due to the brushes but this would make for a compact around the house palette...I'll have to think about it if the price is right
The way they look when wet is like the Doodlehog paints. The palette is darned cute, though, so if it fits a person's style, I'd say get it just for the palette.
Lindsey , I have the expresso set I believe and I absolutely love their paints! Colors transparent and vibrant! I think the sapphire color is the first time that I was able to get it on student grade, I hope I can graduate and to the real paints!
@@thefrugalcrafter I know you do! My kids keep laughing about me watching your reviews! And then they said: mom just watched Linsey and she is about to get another water color set.... 😂! Girl! You’re dangerous! 💕
I too love a great travel palette. The only one I want that I can't get is the fome travel metal palette that looks like a water bottle. The lid removes to reveal the top portion is a water bottle, the lid a water pot. That is the one I want but they don't sell in the USA and the Amazon fome store thingie doesn't sell that fome palette. I've always said, the "fantasy me" one day will travel to London just to buy that palette.
Schmincke uses that FOME palette for their 8 pan travel set. Watch Jackson’s for a sale, it’ll be cheaper than a flight to London! Although a vacation sounds nice…. I’ve thought about that palette for a couple of years, but I dont think my arthritic hands would like holding it.
@@starr-starr yes, look out for the Schminke Fome palette in the U.K. sales, Jackson’s regularly does one, I have the same without the water stuff. The box itself with hold an extra 4 half pans and is TINY. There are other options for getting this palette in London, you can get it already filled from AP Fitzpatrick, and unfilled from Cornellisens, which is worth a trip to London just to visit! Both will mail direct, but it will cost. I actually have two of the non water ones in a little handmade soft leather case that folds closed. Being able to carry 24 half pans in such a tiny case is really nice, and the heft in my pocket feels great. My Schminke one was incredibly good value, but inflation is now hitting art supplies badly! Compared with five or six years ago of course we really did not know how good we had things back then! I bought both of mine in 2020…. If you love the Fome boxes there are also good Chinese replicas, not quite so heavy, but exact form factor, of their larger palettes but a fraction of the cost. There is also the very cute CassArt, also London based, professional 1/4 pan set of 18 which with a small brush, it is a dead ringer for the far more expensive Daler Rowney set. CassArt version currently on sale for £29.99, in a little leather case just large enough to take pencil slipped down the side.
@Phillip stroll Check out Blick! I just ordered that little Schminke travel palette in the FOME (or FOME-like) tin, on sale for 83$. That’s including 8 half pans and is enough for free shipping.
That ‘childhood school art class’ smell is usually tempera paints, which has me curious if these are actually even watercolors and not tempera paints here. I have several tempera cakes given to me that were are not opaque, so not all of them are necessarily so. Also, be careful when ordering art supplies that are not made in the US because sometimes their standards are different and will use toxic chemicals as fillers. Make sure it had the safety certified standard label stamp on it. You may have gotten the two ‘extra’ pans because those two colors are used to ‘sketch’ in especially when using oils, which also makes me wonder if this was designed by someone who doesn’t known much about how to use the right mediums, as you wouldn’t necessarily need those colors to ‘sketch’ in when using watercolors because watercolors aren’t necessarily used in that manner when making a color painting.
These are ASTM certified and the additional colours are Burnt Umber and Indian Yellow. The professional fine artists designed and tested it and the cover painting is done using this set.
A perfectly lovely review and I learned a bit too! However this might be the first time I didn't feel I had to run out and get my own. I might finally have enough watercolor. *sigh*
It’s not the real reason, this movement is based on the US and EU regulations which are getting stricter with the use of the ‘toxic’ pigments. Check the news about use of Titanium White, which is used not only in the art supplies, but a lot in the creams and food.
What a coincidence! I just bought 3 out of the 4 palettes. I got the Vista, Moderno, and the Sorriso. I thought the paints weren’t too bad! Curious what you think of the paints.
Thanks for sharing this with us. I think the while thing with cadmium etc. Is kind of messed up for the people who don't know about pigments. So they think ohh I have to have them just like with all of the granulating paints/ natural minerals paints all just a marketing tool. But I do love me some granulation it's one of the things that originally made me begin watercolors. Thanks and have a great day
I agree with you as far as companies charging the same for less expensive pigments. Also, I just prefer my cadmium and cobalt colors to actually have cadmium or cobalt in them. Personal preference
Thanks for the review Lindsay. I like this palette. The colors appear to be great for landscape and floral at the same time. I'm definitely going to look into buying this one. I was wondering, do all Korean watercolors use dye for their watercolors? I'm using QOR and Senillier at the moment, kind of spoiled lol. But looking for something not so expensive to take on vacay.
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks, I'll remember that for my next purchase. I've gotten several cheap dollar tree and dollar general (Crayola) pallets today to try out and I've swatched already. It's funnn! I may have started another addiction lol, collecting wc paint. I'm already terrible with my brush habit. LOL Have a great weekend Lindsay
Did you figure out what paint it was? My guess is cotman. When they’re new they fall out of their trays just like that. Fits the ‘memory’, too, as they’re pretty ubiquitous!
@@thefrugalcrafter Did you see the other message? We’re having a conversation across posts! I think I found it- Seamiart. The other little Zen palettes on Amazon are just like the Seamiart ones. It’s hard to do direct comparisons online, but the colours look very close. As well, Seamiart also makes palettes that look a LOT like the Sakura Koi box, but slightly different format and pan size, so that fits with you thinking they reminded you of the Japanese paint sets. Can’t find the palette itself anywhere else. (But in looking I found at least two others I MUST have 🤣🤣🤣).
Hey Lindsay, Do they smell like Kor i Nor? ...or like hard circular pans as a child? It seems like only one or two colours like the pinks flowed a lot? They look dye based from here! I think all of the pigment info is all wrong. That would make sense with the non granulating ultramarine! I think when you mixed the warm and cool triads, I think it behaved like dye, and was hard to mix, as one colour was really strong, sat there, and then to correct and make the grey or brown, it was very hard for you to get it easily! You had to add more to get them to mix, and kind of force them together. I would call these craft grade too. Did you like the flat brush for swatching? If one uses a glue stick on any palette, with a wetted tissue, whether it is new or not, it stops the staining and beading. Alcohol removes the staining. It feels more like a kit for home than for travel, as it is so long when open.... I would rather get some handmades off Etsy in a small tin. :) In kindred spirit, Eliza Australia Tues 14th of June 2022 10:40am

Ooohh 👀 this looks lovely.
Remember what Prang watercolor used to smell like. When I was in middle school it had a unique smell but now it doesn't smell like anything?
I actually saw this palette a week ago and considered it due to the brushes but this would make for a compact around the house palette...I'll have to think about it if the price is right
The way they look when wet is like the Doodlehog paints. The palette is darned cute, though, so if it fits a person's style, I'd say get it just for the palette.
Oh Lindsay! Your nostalgic smell is hilarious!! 😂😃👍🏾🤩 Cool travel palette and review!! Enjoy your vacay!! 👍🏾🥰
BTW: What paper are you using??
Hahnemulhe Cezanne
Lindsay has taken to sniffing paint...smh sad day. I literally spewed coffee when you opened up that first pan lol~!
I liked all the three paintings....please do post the other two also )
Lindsey , I have the expresso set I believe and I absolutely love their paints! Colors transparent and vibrant! I think the sapphire color is the first time that I was able to get it on student grade, I hope I can graduate and to the real paints!
I'll be reviewing the allergro and moderns sets too!
And right now Amazon is offering a $10 off coupon, so it brings the cost down to only $30! I am running to go get mine right now!!
The paints look like starbursts
I love you Lindsay! You totally entertain me! Lol your the best! 😂
i have just ordered a set from Amazon uk after watching your demo of the set. And the palette is just what im looking for. Jan
Enjoy!
*sigh*
I really loved your flowy petals in this demo!
I find it "funny" too that companies are cashing in on people wanting to be more health-conscious. 😤
No, shinham and mission gold use customary pigments
@@thefrugalcrafter thanks, I'll remember that for my next purchase. I've gotten several cheap dollar tree and dollar general (Crayola) pallets today to try out and I've swatched already. It's funnn! I may have started another addiction lol, collecting wc paint. I'm already terrible with my brush habit. LOL Have a great weekend Lindsay
In the early 2000s, I used an office supply that was exactly like this palette! But it was sold as a copy stand
Neat!
Sniffing art supplies. Well, you aren’t the only one. Most of us don’t tell thousands of people though, lol.
😆
Did you figure out what paint it was? My guess is cotman. When they’re new they fall out of their trays just like that. Fits the ‘memory’, too, as they’re pretty ubiquitous!
It's not cotman. Im stumped.
Yer killin' me! I have 11 travel palettes! I love this but didn't see a $15.00 coupon?
They reduced the coupon to $10 off but im not sure if it still has a coupon.
Hey Lindsay,
Do they smell like Kor i Nor? ...or like hard circular pans as a child?
In kindred spirit,
Eliza

I *love* that your nose is as trained as an oenophile's, Lindsay. Terroir! You even have a paint cellar where paint can age in ideal conditions. And you decant. 😁 Edit: Watching you just dash off glorious flowers is such a delight.
Thank you Lindsay for the information. Amazon is still offering $10 coupon from $40. I like to watch your product reviews. The pallete looks great to carry around 😀.
i cannot find it on amazon
@@vickimerritt2832 Hello just click on Lindsey's Amazon link on the top of her supplies list that starts with "this palette..."
Dear future Lindsay.
I hope that your enjoying your break. I hope that the dog behaved and the kids didn't get up to mischief. However, my wallet has just packed its bag and has run away. The last words I heard was " She NEEDS new paint" as my front door slammed.
Lots of live
Mews.
I said I was banning myself from watercolor palettes ...here i am watching your reviews to live vicariously through you thinking should i or shouldn't i buy this just to smell them lol🤦🏽♀️
I'll be the voice of reason and say don't buy them just to smell them! 😆
Awesome video today watching from Eufaula Alabama today
So I have given no thought to studio safety. Could you say more about that in the future? Thank you.
In the UK we don't get coupons EVER I bought these last week to put away for christmas for myself
This kit is no longer available. Amazon states they don't know if it will be back in stock ever again.
Got excited about these but not available as of 12/30/22
Thank you for the review.
I was going to ask you if you thought they may be part ink. But you said it in the end.😊
Lindsay what would be your top 3 watercolour brands that really travel in water, no price limit of lightfast requirements?
Qor is definitely the travelingest paints
...i don't need it but I need it...
There flow is impressive, unfortunately they don’t sell these on Amazon Australia
@thefrugalcrafter Lindsay and any other seasoned (and by seasoned i mean more experience than my 6mo 😀) plein air painter.
If you were to swap out the colours for 26 of a different brand pans or tubes, what brand and colours would you choose?
I'd do a split primart and my favorite earth colors
Ooohh 👀 this looks lovely.
I'd imagine it might be super helpful for someone moving or maybe on road trip - perhaps too chonkeh for backpacking buuut everything in one place AND your brushes stay protected? Chefs kiss
On a whim - do you suspect an actual half pan can be dropped into the paint slots? Or that's probably too good to be true huh 😂
Yes
@@thefrugalcrafter cheers! Thank you
Enjoyed the review! How would you compare these to Koi? Are they better, same, or not as good. Thanks!
They have a lot of flow like mungyo or QoR but they are only like inktense or kohinoor micador wayercolors
Thank you for your feedback!
it jump up 39$ but the 10$ off is still active! so it would be 32$
In a world where a few companies make all the watercolor paints, selling under different brands the exact same thing, here comes Zen Nomad! It’s strange!
ROFL.
thanks for sharing this! I also came across this searching the same thing the same way. mine arrives tomorrow 😊 have you tried the Kuretake Phys travel box? I have one but have only seen one review on it so far.
Never heard of it. Is it to hold the big pans?
@@thefrugalcrafter it uses regular sized pans :)

Honey or rosemary? Popular to add
What a cute palette! Very tempting. Thank you for your review on the paints as well. I like that they are wrapped and can be popped out easily. I love my art whale paints for urban sketching and would prefer to use them. I'm curious, were you able to get a standard half pan to fit in the wells?
They will fit
Very good work, you are an excellent artist ,i follow each of your videos, congratulations,i am really proud of you, Always full support my friend...
I ordered the Sorisso watercolors and mine came with an extra too! Maybe they keep accidentally adding extra paints to the sets. I honestly think the paints I have ARE Mungyo.
intersting!
Right now the Sennelier 24 half pan sent is 56% off at $28. No brushes included but what a bargain.
It is their student grade but still’ excellent paint in a nice pallete.
